AB - The surface defects on alumina-based refractory arising from thermal shock were studied using image analysis and statistical tools. Alumina-based refractory specimens were prepared by adding a different amount of fibers into their original composition and compacted on different pressures. Obtained specimens were subjected to thermal shock, and induced surface defects were characterized by their morphological parameters determined using the image analysis procedure. The influence of preparation conditions on the surface defects morphology was studied using principle component analysis. It was shown that morphological parameters of defects vary corresponding to the composition and preparation conditions of ceramic material.

AB - The provision of mechanical stimulation is believed to be necessary for the functional assembly of skeletal tissues, which are normally exposed to a variety of biomechanical signals in vivo. In this paper, we present a development and validation of a novel bioreactor aimed for skeletal tissue engineering that provides dynamic compression and perfusion of cultivated tissues. Dynamic compression can be applied at frequencies up to 67.5 Hz and displacements down to 5 µm thus suitable for the simulation of physiological conditions in a native cartilage tissue (0.1-1 Hz, 5-10 % strain). The bioreactor also includes a load sensor that was calibrated so to measure average loads imposed on tissue samples. Regimes of the mechanical stimulation and acquisition of load sensor outputs are directed by an automatic control system using applications developed within the LabView platform. In addition, perfusion of tissue samples at physiological velocities (10-100 µm/s) provides efficient mass transfer, as well as the possibilities to expose the cells to hydrodynamic shear and simulate the conditions in a native bone tissue. Thus, the novel bioreactor is suited for studies of the effects of different biomechanical signals on in vitro regeneration of skeletal tissues, as well as for the studies of newly formulated biomaterials and cell biomaterial interactions under in vivo-like settings.

AB - The influence of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the physico-chemical properties of hemp fibres was studied in this paper. Plasma-modification of hemp fibres was performed at atmospheric pressure. The source of the DBD was developed in the Quantum Optics Laboratory of the Faculty of Physics in Belgrade as a device prototype with plane-parallel geometry, for the continuous plasma-modification or treatment of textile materials. The capillary rise method was applied to evaluate the improvement in water uptake of the DBD treated hemp fibres. The plasma-modified hemp fibres have highly improved wetting properties without changing physico-mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation).

Standard method of testing is based on monitoring the surface shanging during thermal stability testing. Samples are photographed before and during thermal stability testing. Image analysis program was used to determine the amount of surface deterioriation. Obtained results for surface deterioriation were compared to the results of water quench test, as well as with strength degradation. The obtained results will be used for prediction of thermal stability behavior of refractory specimen.

AB - This paper investigates the possibility of applying optical fibers as sensors for investigating low energy impact damage in laminar thermoplastic composite materials, in real time. Impact toughness testing by a Charpy impact pendulum with different loads was conducted in order to determine the method for comparative measurement of the resulting damage in the material. For that purpose intensity-based optical fibers were built in to specimens of composite materials with Kevlar 129 (the DuPont registered trade-mark for poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)) woven fabric as reinforcement and thermoplastic PVB (poly(vinyl butyral)) as the matrix. In some specimens part of the layers of Kevlar was replaced with metal mesh (50% or 33% of the layers). Experimental testing was conducted in order to observe and analyze the response of the material under multiple low-energy impacts. Light from the light-emitting diode (LED) was launched to the embedded optical fiber and was propagated to the phototransistor-based photo detector. During each impact, the signal level, which is proportional to the light intensity in the optical fiber, drops and then slowly recovers. The obtained signals were analyzed to determine the appropriate method for real time damage monitoring. The major part of the damage occurs during impact. The damage reflects as a local, temporary release of strain in the optical fiber and an increase of the signal level. The obtained results show that intensity-based optical fibers could be used for measuring the damage in laminar thermoplastic composite materials. The acquired optical fiber signals depend on the type of material, but the same set of rules (relatively different, depending on the type of material) could be specified. Using real time measurement of the signal during impact and appropriate analysis enables quantitative evaluation of the impact damage in the material. Existing methods in most cases use just the intensity of the signal before and after the impact, as the measure of damage. This method could be used to monitor the damage in real time, giving warnings before fatal damage occurs.

This method could be used to monitor the damage in real time, giving warnings before fatal damage occurs., Ovaj rad istražuje mogućnost primene optičkih vlakana kao senzora za ispitivanje oštećenja laminarnih termoplastičnih kompozitnih materijala nastalih usled udara niske energije, u realnom vremenu.

AB - Most important properties which are usually measured for refractories are work temperature and thermal stability. Thermal stability of the alumina based samples was measured using a standard laboratory procedure, the water quench test (JUS.B.D.8.319.). ImagePro Plus Program was used for image analysis of microphotographs of the samples before, during and after water quench test. Changes at the surface before, and after cycling were given. Mechanical characteristics were considered such as compressive strength, and dynamic modulus of elasticity. It was measured by resonance frequency measurements, as well as ultrasonic velocity. In this work the correlation between microstructure, ulatrasonic velosity and strength on thermal stability of the sample were investigated. The obtained results were used for validation of the model to predict the thermal stability of the refractory specimen.

AB - The paper deals with the research in applying optical fibres (OF) as intensity-based sensors in real-time damage detection of laminar composite materials. For experimental purposes, thermoplastic laminar composite materials with embedded optical fibres were made. Manufactured specimens of aramid fiber/poly(vinyl butyral) with embedded optical fibres were subjected to various loads: static loading by indentation on the adapted tensile testing machine, low blow on Charpy pendulum, and ballistic impact by standard weaponry and ammunition. Initiation of damage and fracture during laminate testing was observed from the intensity drop of the light signal transmitted through the optical fibre. Experimental results confirmed that optical fibres could be applied as intensity sensors in real-time monitoring of structural changes in thermoplastic laminar composite materials.

AB - The possibility of applying optical fibers as sensors for investigation of real time low energy impact damage in laminar thermoplastic composite materials has been studied. For that purpose intensity based optical fibers were embedded in composite material specimens. Kevlar 129 (DuPont's registered trade-mark for poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide)) woven fabric was used as reinforcement. Impact toughness testing by the Charpy impact pendulum was conducted in order to investigate low energy impacts. Transient intensity of optical signal during the impact, were compared with material crack initiation energy and crack propagation energy. Following this approach, development of damage in material was monitored. Obtained results show that intensity based optical fibers could be used as detectors for material damage appearance, and also, for level evaluation of its degradation caused by low energy impacts.

AB - The paper discusses methods for determining the specificity of reproductions (forgeries) of protected documents obtained through various printing techniques. The methods are based on the analysis of printed proofs and measuring of dimensions of characteristic, enlarged details, obtained with a microscope and a digital camera. The software for the analysis is Image Pro Plus. The paper defines methods for measuring the two dimensional parameters: line width and screen dot’s radius. Proofs of reproductions were examined of the vehicle registration card and the FRY passport, obtained with digital printers and offset printing machines, and it was proved that the discussed geometric characteristics may be used as the criteria for detection of forgeries.

AB - Precursor fibers are made from the aluminium-hydroxide chloride based sols. The process stability can be influenced both by the fiber formation conditions and the rheology of the sol. The distance from the disk canter is the same, and the rotation speed is changed in one set of experiments. Four different sols are used under the fixed fiber formation conditions in the second set of experiments. Obtained fibers were dried at room temperature. The image analysis program, Lira 98 developed at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy in Belgrade, is used to measure fibers diameters. Obtained results are statistically handled. The fibers diameters coefficients of variation are used to evaluate the process stability dependence on fiber formation conditions and sol rheological properties.

AB - The prediction of refractories thermal shock behavior can be estimated on two basis: heat transfer conditions and/or fracture mechanics concept. Materials considered in our analysis were alumina based refractories with different (Al2O3 + TiO2) content from 28% to 78%. Model for temperature and stress distribution calculation was presented in this paper. The thermal and mechanical properties of the materials were measured using standard laboratory procedure. Thermal stability of the refractories was measured by water quench test (JUS. B. Ds. 319.). The samples were dried at 110 degrees C and then transferred into electric furnace at 950 degrees C and held there for 15 min. The pieces were then moved into water and left for 3 min before returning to the furnace at 950 degrees C. This procedure is repeated until failure. The number of quenches to failure was taken as a measure of a thermal shock resistance. From the average values of the thermal and mechanical properties fracture resistance parameters were calculated. Heat transfer coefficient and Blot number were calculated using the equations given by Holman assuming the free convection. Results from the linear regression analysis showed that fracture resistance parameters can be correlated with the measured number of cycles of water quench test.
