AB - Antibacterial and antifungal ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by functionalized magnetite (Fe3O4) with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and yeast Candida albicans. Characterization of materials including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectroscopy technique followed each step during the course of nanocomposite preparation. The synthesized powder consists of 30-50nm in size silver particles surrounded by clusters of smaller (approximate to 10nm) Fe3O4 particles. The content of silver in the nanocomposite powder was found to be slightly above 40 wt.-%. Concentration-dependent and time-dependent bacterial reduction measurements in dark indicated that use of Ag NPs leads to the complete reduction of E. coli and S. aureus even at the concentration level of silver as low as 40 g/mL. However, the negligible antifungal ability of synthesized nanocomposite was found against yeast C. albicans in the entire investigated concentration range (0.1-2.0mg/mL of the nanocomposite, i.e., 40-800 g/mL of silver). Complete inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus was achieved in five repeated cycles indicated that synthesized nanocomposite can perform under long-run working conditions. From the technological point of view, magnetic separation is the additional advantage of synthesized nanocomposite for potential use as an antibacterial agent.

AB - Copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) have proven to own excellent antimicrobial efficacy, but the problems of easy oxidation and aggregation limit their practical application. Here, nanocomposite based on polyaniline (PANI) and Cu NPs solved this problem and brought additional physicochemical properties that are markedly advantageous for antimicrobial applications. Current work exploits this potential, to examine its time- and concentration-dependent antimicrobial activity, employing E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans as a model microbial species. Regarding the presence of polaronic charge carriers in the fibrous polyaniline network, effects of Cu NPs size and their partially oxidized surfaces (the data were confirmed by HRTEM, FESEM, XRD, Raman and XPS analysis), as well as rapid copper ions release, Cu-PANI nanocomposite showed efficient bactericidal and fungicidal activities at the concentrations lt = 1 ppm, within the incubation time of 2 h. Beside the quantitative analysis, the high levels of cellular disruption for all tested microbes were evidenced by atomic force microscopy. Moreover, the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of the Cu-PANI nanocomposite were lower than those reported for other nanocomposites. Using such low concentrations is recognized as a good way to avoid its toxicity toward the environment. For this purpose, Cu-PANI nanocomposite is tested for its genotoxicity and influence on the oxidative status of the human cells in vitro.

AB - Co2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals were synthetized by a hydrothermal treatment procedure applied to precursor dispersion of titania nanotubes and Co2+ ions. Mixture of polygonal and prolate spheroid-like nanocrystals was obtained. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that resulted nanocrystals retain anatase crystal phase for both dopant concentrations (1.69 and 2.5 at%), but the crystal lattice parameters were affected. Reflection spectra revealed altered optical properties compared to bare TiO2. Room temperature ferromagnetic ordering with saturation magnetic moment in the range of 0.001-0.002 mu (B)/Co was observed for both measured films made of Co2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals.

AB - Carbon cryogel/ceria composite, with 10 wt.% of ceria, was synthesized by mixing of ceria and carbon cryogel (CC). The sample was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption of arsenic(III) ions from aqueous solutions on carbon cryogel/ceria nanocomposite was studied as a function of time, solution pH and As(III) ion concentration. The results are correlated with previous investigations of adsorption mechanism of arsenic(III) on carbon cryogel. Adsorption dose experiments showed that the mass of the adsorbent was reduced for 20 times, in comparison with pure CC, for the same amount of adsorbed arsenic(III) ions. BET isotherm was used to interpret the experimental data for modelling liquid phase adsorption.

AB - Cu2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals were synthesized using dispersions of titania nanotubes in the presence of Cu2+ ions as a precursors. The morphologies of nanotubular titania precursors and resulted Cu2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals were characterized by TEM. Structural and optical properties were studied by XRPD analysis and UV-vis spectroscopy in reflectance mode, respectively. Their magnetic properties were investigated using SQUID magnetometer. Tetragonal anatase crystalline structure was confirmed in all synthesized samples. Polygonal (d similar to 15 nm) and spheroid like (length, up to 90 nm) Cu2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals in samples synthesized at different pHs were observed by TEM. Ferromagnetic ordering with almost closed loop (H-c similar to 200 Oe) was detected in all Cu2+ doped TiO2 nanoparticle films. The saturation magnetization values varied depending on the Cu2+ concentration, nanoparticles shape, size and consequently different number of oxygen vacancies. This study revealed possibility to control magnetic ordering by changing the shape/aspect ratio of Cu2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals.

AB - Resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) cryogels were synthesized by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde and freeze-drying was carried out with t-butanol. Carbon cryogel (CC) was obtained by pyrolyzing RF cryogels in an inert atmosphere. Material was characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), determination of isoelectric point (IEP) and point of zero charge (PZC). The As(III) removal from aqueous solutions using CC as adsorbent was studied. The adsorption of As(III) on CC was investigated as a function of As(III) concentration and solution pH. Kinetic and equilibrium behavior were defined. The amount of adsorbed As(III) remained similar within the investigated pH of the solution at equilibrium (pH range 2-11). The adsorption mechanism of As(III) ions was discussed in view of arsenic speciation and cryogel PZC. It mainly involved physical adsorption of neutral arsenic acid molecule and H2AsO3- anion on the CC surface with some electrostatic contribution. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - The possibility of in situ photoreduction of Ag+ using colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles deposited on the surface of polyamide fabric in the presence of the amino acid alanine and methanol is discussed. The presence of TiO2/Ag nanoparticles on the polyamide fabric was confirmed by FESEM and ICP analyses. The antibacterial activity of the fabric was tested against the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli and the Gram- positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The TiO2/Ag nanoparticles fabricated on the surface of the polyamide fabric provided maximum bacterial reduction and thus, excellent antibacterial activity. In spite of silver leaching from the fabric during washing, the impregnated polyamide fabric preserved the maximum reduction of E. coli colonies. The antibacterial activity against S. aureus was slightly decreased after ten washing cycles, but still the antibacterial activity could be considered as satisfactory. In addition, the presence of TiO2/Ag nanoparticles ensured better UV protection efficiency, which belonged to the UV protection category very good.

AB - This study explores different mechanisms of antimicrobial action by designing hybrid nanomaterials that provide a new approach in the fight against resistant microbes. Here, we present a cheap copper-polyaniline (Cu-PANI) nanocomposite material with enhanced antimicrobial properties, prepared by simple in situ polymerization method, when polymer and metal nanoparticles are produced simultaneously. The copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are uniformly dispersed in the polymer and have a narrow size distribution (dav = 6 nm). We found that CuNPs and PANI act synergistically against three strains, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, and resulting nanocomposite exhibits higher antimicrobial activity than any component acting alone. Before using the colony counting method to quantify its time and concentration antimicrobial activity, different techniques (UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry) were used to identify the optical, structural, and chemical aspects of the formed Cu-PANI nanocomposite. The antimicrobial activity of this nanocomposite shows that the microbial growth has been fully inhibited; moreover, some of the tested microbes were killed. Atomic force microscopy revealed dramatic changes in morphology of tested cells due to disruption of their cell wall integrity after incubation with Cu-PANI nanocomposite.

AB - A procedure for the preparation of ZnO nanocubes in an alginate biopolymer was introduced. The obtained nanocubes were used for the preparation of ZnO/Ag heterostructures. High resolution scanning electron microscopy showed that reduction of silver salts in the presence of nanocubes results in the formation of spherical silver nanoparticles at their edges and vertices. UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that alginate-ZnO/Ag nanostructures exhibit different optical properties compared to the starting alginate-ZnO system. The surface plasmon resonance peak of the silver nanoparticles dominates the absorption spectra of the ZnO/Ag hybrid particles, while at the same time the Ag nanoparticles quench the ZnO emission. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/Ag heterostructure was faster than that of the pure ZnO and further improved with increasing the concentration of silver. Both the alginate-ZnO and alginate-ZnO/Ag nanocomposites showed strong antimicrobial activities against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria.

AB - We report on a new approach to the synthesis of Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids. They were synthesized by shape transformation of hydrothermally treated titania nanotubes at different pH and in the presence of Eu3+ ions. The use of nanotubes as a precursor to the synthesis of Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids opens the possibility of overcoming the problems related to molecular precursors. The shapes and sizes of the nanotubes, Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. Crystal structures of the resultant powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The percentage ratio of Eu3+ to Ti4+ ions in doped nanocrystals was determined using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The optical characterization was done by using fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible reflection spectroscopies. An average size of faceted Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals was 13 nm. The lateral dimensions of Eu3+ doped TiO2 prolate nanospheroids varied from 14 to 20 nm, while the length varied from 40 to 80 nm, depending on precursor concentrations. The XRD patterns revealed the homogeneous anatase crystal phase of Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids independently of the amount of dopant. A postsynthetic treatment (filtration or dialysis) was applied on the dispersions of the doped nanoparticles in order to study the influence of the dopant position on photoluminescence (PL) spectra. In the red spectral region, room temperature PL signals associated with D-5(0) - gt F-7(J) (J = 1-4) transitions of Eu3+ were observed in all samples. The increased contribution of dopants from the interior region of dialyzed nanocrystals to photoluminescence was confirmed by the increase of R value.

AB - In this study, we analysed pellets from long-eared owls (Asio otus) collected from four localities in Belgrade (Serbia). The pellets contained the remains of prey, namely voles (Arvicola terrestris) and field mice (Apodemus agrarius). The concentrations of 14 elements (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Zn, Sr, Ba, Mn, Ti, Cu, Si, B) were evaluated in whole pellets and in samples containing only bone tissue, which were dissected from the whole pellet. The increased levels of certain elements, including Mn, Zn, Ba, Cu and radioactive K-40, indicate contamination of the soil by various sources, such as industrial plants and agricultural practices. From the results presented in this article, we suggest that the analysis of owl pellets may indicate the quality of the local environment.
