AB - Poly(o-toluidine) (POT) is electrochemically synthesized on graphite electrode at constant current density of 1.5 mA cm−2 from aqueous electrolyte of 1.0 mol dm−3 H2SO4 and 0.25 mol dm−3 o-toluidine. Electrochemical characterization of POT electrode is performed using cyclic voltammetry, Mot Schottky analysis and galvanostatic measurements at different currents. POT electrode exhibited high energy storage features, with specific energy up to 17.5 Wh kg−1 and specific power up to 3300 W kg−1. Cyclic stability exceeding 90% is obtained over 2000 charge/discharge cycles at 13.1 A g−1 indicating the perspective application of POT electrode as energy storage material.

AB - In this work we investigated the influence of different deposition angles on the structural and magnetic properties of nickel thin films obtained by Glancing Angle Deposition. The films were deposited onto glass substrates at the angles of 65° and 85°. The structure of the films was studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic properties were analyzed using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy (MOKE). It was found that the variation in the deposition angle has a great influence on the porosity, crystallinity and surface roughness of the Ni films. The obtained changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in the magnetic properties. MOKE measurements revealed that the thinner films, deposited at the angle of 85°, have a 2.5 times higher coercivity in comparison with the films deposited at the lower angle, which can be ascribed to their higher porosity. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Extensive use of organophosphate pesticides (OPs) invokes development of efficient procedures for their removal from the environment. By introducing low levels ( LT 1 at%) of B, N or P into the structure of mesoporous carbons, we have produced a series of materials with different surface chemical composition, textural properties and level of structural disorder. These adsorbents were applied for removal of dimethoate and its oxo-analogue omethoate from aqueous solutions under batch adsorption conditions and by filtration using modified nylon membrane filters. Adsorption capacities up to 164 mg g(-1) were measured, with OPs uptake typically above 80% for dimethoate concentration as high as 5 x 10(-3) mol dm(-3). After the adsorption, neurotoxic effects of OP-containing water samples were significantly reduced or completely removed. The level of structural disorder was identified as a key parameter for efficient removal of dimethoate and omethoate while in the filtration experiments surface area of adsorbents also played an important role. While the presented research appeals to new fundamental studies of OP-carbon surface interactions, it also indicates a possible strategy in designing new efficient adsorbents for OPs removal from water.

AB - Spider silk poses excellent mechanical properties, tenacity and elasticity and it has been used as a template for calcite mineralization to improve load bearing strength of osteoconductive calcite. The samples were obtained by mimicking biomineralization for five days in order to follow formation and growth of calcite on the surface of spider silk. Crystal phase was detected by XRD and FTIR spectroscopy. Microstructure, crystal size and its morphology were studied by means of FESEM. After two days of processing, pure calcite phase was obtained, and a size of the formed crystals increased with prolongation of biomineralization.

AB - In this work, nickel (Ni) thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation of Ni using Glancing Angle Deposition technique onto the glass substrate with the thickness varied from 25 nm to 150 nm. Characterization of obtained Ni films was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by Magneto-Optical Kerr effect measurements (MOKE). The effect of thickness on structural, chemical and magnetic properties of nickel films has been studied. Observed changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in magnetic parameters obtained by MOKE measurements. It was found that for thinner Ni films, the enhancement of coercivity is due to the surface roughness of Ni films, while for thicker films the observed asymmetry of coercivity is due to the mechanism of column size growth. AB - The impact of the surface charge of alumina supports on the adsorption of Candida rugosa lipase was investigated in terms of the zeta potentials of the adsorption partners. The lipase adhered onto alumina with similar efficiency under both repulsive and attractive electrostatic conditions, shifting the zeta potential of the support towards that of the enzyme. The behavior was explained by a heterogeneous distribution of the surface charge of the lipase molecule. Special emphasis in this study was placed on the effect of immobilization on the enzyme kinetics and principal reasons for enzyme immobilization: improvement in stability and potential for reuse. The enzyme affinity was not altered by its adsorption onto alumina, while the Vmax value of the lipase decreased. The thermostability of the adsorbed lipase was improved. A significant potential for reuse was found.

AB - Lipase from Candida rugosa was immobilized by adsorption onto laboratory prepared supports, silica SBA-15 and zirconia. The adsorption process was studied as a function of pH in terms of percent of adsorbed lipase, enzyme activity and zeta potential of support and enzyme. Several analytical approaches such as laser Doppler electrophoresis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed that the lipase was successfully immobilized onto both supports. The zeta-potential data suggest that the adsorption efficiency does not depends on the sign but on the magnitude of the surface charge of adsorption partners, and therefore underline the importance of their dispersion stability. Adsorption to material surface altered enzyme characteristics. nu(max), for the lipase immobilized onto silica and zirconia were 4.8-fold and 3.6-fold lower than that of the free lipase, respectively. The Km showed no alteration of enzyme-substrate affinity on zirconia support, whereas the enzyme immobilized on silica had 3.6 times lower affinity. Thermostability at 60 degrees C of the lipase was improved 12-fold on zirconia and 4-fold on silica. Finally, in examining reusability, the immobilized lipase retained more than 90% of initial activity after eight reuses on both supports. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

All rights reserved.",

AB - Ordered mesoporous carbon, volume-doped up to 3w.% with Pt, Ru and Pt-Ru nanoparticles was synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly method, under acidic conditions. The content of incorporated metal was determined by EDX analysis. The X-ray diffractometry confirmed the existence of highly dispersed metallic phases in doped samples. Specific surface area was determined by N-2-physisorption measurements to range between 452 and 545m(2) g(-1). Raman spectroscopy of investigated materials indicated highly disordered carbon structure with crystallite sizes around 1.4 nm. In a form of thin-layer electrode on glassy carbon support, in 0.1M KOH solution, the prepared materials displayed high activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, with onset potentials more positive than -0.10 V vs. SCE. The kinetics of O-2 reduction was found to be affected by both the specific surface area and the concentration of metal dopants. The ethanol tolerance of (Pt, Ru)-doped OMCs was found to be higher than that of common Pt/C ORR catalysts. Presented study provides a new route for the synthesis of active and selective ORR catalysts in alkaline media, being competitive with, or superior to, the existing ones in terms of performance and price. AB - Silver nanoparticles were fabricated via in situ reduction of silver nitrate embedded in swollen P(HEMA/IA) hydrogel, using gamma radiolysis method. Copolymeric hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and itaconic acid (IA), previously synthesised by gamma radiation for wound dressing application, were used as a carrier and a stabilising agent, while ethyl alcohol was used as a free radical scavenger. The influence of different P(HEMA/IA) hydrogels and silver salt concentrations on the size and distribution of nanoparticles was investigated. The Ag/P(HEMA/IA) nanocomposites were characterised by high resolution scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy and swelling measurements. Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacterium), Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacterium) and Candida albicans (fungus) were used to prove the antimicrobial properties of Ag/P(HEMA/IA) nanocomposites. The inhibition kinetics of bacteria growth was investigated by measuring the colony-forming unit. The antimicrobial effectiveness of the Ag/P(HEMA/IA) hydrogel nanocomposite was demonstrated even at small silver concentrations. P(HEMA/IA) hydrogels containing nanosilver particles was found suitable to be used as wound dressing.

AB - In this study, nanocrystalline LiFePO4/C composite powder has been synthesized via a cellulose matrix-assisted method. In an experiment conducted under extreme conditions involving rapid heating, short high-temperature delay, and subsequent quenching, well-ordered 35-nm crystallites have been obtained within 5 min. A quantitative filter paper has served both as a template and carbon source. It degrades pyrolytically through fragmentation reactions and formation of volatiles when exposed to rapid heating, which further has an impact on powder morphology, as revealed by electron microscopy studies. The electrochemical measurements in terms of galvanostatic cycling have shown that the approach presented in this study may enable to reach good rate capability and excellent cycling stability. AB - We report on novel, low temperature synthesis of well crystallized hemimorphite zinc silicate Zn4Si2O7(OH)(2)(H2O) (ZSO) with flower-like morphology, via one-pot method that includes the assistance of a non-ionic block copolymer. The morphology of the synthesized ZSO powder was observed by SEM and FESEM. The structure of the ZSO sample was refined down to the R-factor of 8.6%. The refinement revealed the ZSO powder that belongs to the orthorhombic system with space group Imm2, and ZnO nanoparticles as a minor phase in the synthesized powder. The photoluminescence (PL) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements demonstrated optical properties of the minor ZnO phase. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
