AB - Alkyd resin/TiO2 nanocomposites (NC) were prepared from short oil alkyd resin and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with in situ formed imine ligand, based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and oleylamine, or with three gallic acid esters. The short oil alkyd resin was synthesized from sunflower oil, phthalic anhydride, and trimethylolpropane. Unmodified and surface modified TiO2 NPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Rheological investigation revealed that prepared dispersions have higher dynamic viscosity than pure alkyd resin. Using different characterization methods it was obtained that NCs have similar thermooxidative stability as alkyd resin, lower glass transition temperature, better barrier properties, enhanced hardness, better chemical resistance, and lower adhesion to the metal, except in the case of NC prepared using TiO2 NPs surface modified with imine, which exhibited better adhesion to the metal than pure alkyd resin.

AB - The use of penicillin G acylase (PGA) covalently linked to insoluble carrier is expected to produce major advances in pharmaceutical processing industry and the enzyme stability enhancement is still a significant challenge. The objective of this study was to improve catalytic performance of the covalently immobilized PGA on a potential industrial carrier, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)], by optimizing the copolymerization process and the enzyme attachment procedure. This synthetic copolymer could be a very promising alternative for the development of low-cost, easy-to-prepare, and stable biocatalyst compared to expensive commercially available epoxy carriers such as Eupergit or Sepabeads. The PGA immobilized on poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) in the shape of microbeads obtained by suspension copolymerization appeared to have higher activity yield compared to copolymerization in a cast. Optimal conditions for the immobilization of PGA on poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) microbeads were 1mg/mL of PGA in 0.75mol/L phosphate buffer pH 6.0 at 25 degrees C for 24h, leading to the active biocatalyst with the specific activity of 252.7U/g dry beads. Chemical amination of the immobilized PGA could contribute to the enhanced stability of the biocatalyst by inducing secondary interactions between the enzyme and the carrier, ensuring multipoint attachment. The best balance between the activity yield (51.5%), enzyme loading (25.6mg/g), and stability (stabilization factor 22.2) was achieved for the partially modified PGA.

AB - TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide, were surface modified by three gallic acid esters with different hydrophobic part length: octyl, decyl and lauryl gallate, and then used to prepare TiO2/epoxy nanocomposites. The characterization of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles was performed by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The influence of different gallic acid esters and content of modified TiO2 nanoparticles on the glass transition temperature (Tg), rheological, barrier and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated by DSC, DMA, water vapor permeability test and König pendulum. The presence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused the increase of Tg and decrease of the water vapor permeability. However, the length of the nonpolar gallate part showed no effect on Tg of the synthesized nanocomposites, while the increase of the nanofiller content resulted in the increase of Tg. With increasing the hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand, the water vapor transmission rate decreased, while the hardness of the nanocomposites did not change.
Prisustvo površinski modifikovanih TiO2 nanočestica u epoksidnoj smoli dovodi do povećanja temperature ostakljivanja i smanjenja propustljivosti vodene pare u poređenju sa čistom epoksidnom smolom.

TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide and their structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Three gallic acid esters, having different hydrophobic part, were used for surface modification of the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles: propyl, hexyl and lauryl gallate. The gallate chemisorption onto surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, while the amount of surface-bonded gallates was determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles, as well as the length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, on glass transition temperature, barrier, dielectric and anticorrosive properties of epoxy resin was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, water vapor transmission test, dielectric spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements. Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused increase of glass transition temperature and decrease of the water vapor permeability of epoxy resin. The water vapor transmission rate of epoxy/TiO2 nanocomposites was reduced with increasing hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand. Dielectric constant of examined nanocomposites was influenced by gallate used for the modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites have better anticorrosive properties than pure epoxy resin, because the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles react as oxygen scavengers, which inhibit steel corrosion by cathodic mechanism.

AB - Nanocomposites (NCs) with different content of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embeded in polystyrene (PS) matrix were prepared by in situ bulk radical polymerization. The nearly monodisperse Ag NPs protected with oleylamine were synthesized via organic solvo-thermal method and further used as a filler. The as-prepared spherical Ag NPs with diameter of 7.0 +/- 1.5 nm were well dispersed in the PS matrix. The structural properties of the resulting Ag/PS NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, while optical properties were characterized using optical absorption measurements. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements showed that the presence of Ag NPs stabilized with oleylamine has no influence on the molecular weight and polydispersity of the PS matrix. The influence of silver content on the thermal properties of Ag/PS NCs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that resistance of PS to thermal degradation was improved upon incorporation of Ag NPs. The Ag/PS NCs have lower glass transition temperatures than net PS because loosely packed oleylamine molecules at the interface caused the increase of free volume and chain segments mobility near the surface of Ag NPs.

AB - Spherical TiO2 particles of different size were dispersed in alkyd resin based on soybean oil. Four samples of TiO2 particles were used, three commercial and one obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide. The size of the synthesized nanoparticles was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles was performed with propyl gallate and lauryl gallate. The influence of the size of TiO2 nanoparticles, their concentration and type of the surface modification on the rheological properties of alkyd resin was investigated. The obtained results have shown that the viscosity of the prepared dispersions was higher than the viscosity of the pure resin, increases with decreasing particle diameter and decreases with frequency increase. Surface modified particles showed higher influence on the viscosity of alkyd resin than unmodified, because their hydrodynamic volume is higher due to the presence of the adsorbed gallates, leading to the increase of effective volume fraction of particles in dispersion. For the lowest TiO2 concentration, the viscosity was higher for the sample modified with lauryl gallate, due to the higher thickness of the adsorbed layer. The increase of concentration, because of less dispersion stability of the particles modified with propyl gallate, leads to particle agglomeration. The presence of agglomerates, which was confirmed by a change in the slope of the functional dependence of storage modulus on loss modulus, leads to a rapid increase in viscosity.

AB - Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles into polystyrene (PS) matrix was achieved by in situ bulk radical polymerization of styrene. The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with four amphiphilic esters of the gallic acid (octyl, decyl, lauryl and cetyl gallate), which have different lengths of hydrophobic alkyl chain (C8C16). FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements confirmed the formation of a charge transfer complex between surface Ti atoms and gallic esters. Microstructural characterization of the synthesized nanocomposites revealed that the best dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles in PS was achieved when the TiO2 surface was modified with octyl gallate. The presence of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles by different alkyl gallates does not have an influence on the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PS matrix. On the other hand, thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of PS were significantly improved by incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles. The most pronounced improvement of thermal and thermo-oxidative stability was observed for TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with octyl gallate. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013.

AB - The dilute solution behavior of six carboxymethyl starch (CMS) samples was investigated in aqueous NaCl solutions of different concentration (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 M) by dynamic light scattering (DLS) at 25°C. The values of weight average molar mass, Mw, of the investigated CMS samples were in the range from 9 × 105 to 2.1 × 107 g/mol. Three of the CMS samples were obtained from corn starch and the other three from potato starch. They had different degrees of substitution, DS, ranging from 0.4 to 1.1. The translational diffusion coefficient, Dz, and hydrodynamic radius, Rh, were determined for all CMS samples in aqueous NaCl solutions of different concentrations by the DLS method. The obtained results were treated together with previous results obtained by static light scattering and viscometry, which enabled the calculation of the structure-sensitive parameter, ρ, and the dependence of Rh, radius of gyration, Rg, and viscosity radius, Rη, on molar mass. The calculated values of the ρ parameter were independent of molar mass. The parameter ρ did not change significantly with the variation of the salt concentration in water, its values being in the range from 1.10 to 1.19. The values of exponent ni in the log-log dependence of Rg, Rh, and Rη on Mw were in the range between 0.42 and 0.47; 0.36 and 0.49; 0.42 and 0.44, respectively. These values are characteristic of branched structures of macromolecules.

AB - Nanocomposites based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by in situ radical polymerization of MMA in solution. The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with four gallic acid esters (octyl, decyl, lauryl and cetyl gallate). The content of gallates present on the surface of TiO2, was calculated from the TGA results. The influence of length of hydrophobic tail of amphiphilic alkyl gallates on dispersability of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in PMMA matrix, the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PMMA, as well as the thermal stability of the prepared PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites in nitrogen and air was investigated. The influence of content of TiO2 nanoparticles on the properties of these nanocomposites was also examined. The formation of a charge transfer complex between the surface Ti atoms and the gallates was confirmed by FTIR and LIN/spectroscopy. TEM micrographs of the PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites revealed that degree of TiO2 aggregation can be significantly lowered by increasing the length of aliphatic part of the used gallates. The molecular weight of PMMA slightly decreases with the increase of TiO2 content, indicating that used TiO2 nanoparticles act as radical scavengers during the polymerization of MMA. The presence of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles do not have an influence on the mobility of PMMA chain segments leading to the same values of glass transition temperature for all investigated samples. Thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of the PMMA matrix are improved by introducing TiO2 nanoparticles modified with gallates.

AB - The properties of urethane acrylate resin mixtures based on the linear and hyperbranched aliphatic polyesters were examined. Linear polyester was synthesized from neopentil glycol and adipic acid. Hyperbranched polyester of the third generation was synthesized from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid and di-trimethylol propane. The modification of 60% of hyperbranched aliphatic polyester OH end groups was carried out with isononanoic acid or with soybean fatty acids. Two hyperbranched urethane acrylates, with the same degree of acrylation, and one linear urethane acrylate were obtained by reaction of appropriate polyester and isophorone diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. The influence of added amount of HUA and nature of non-acrylic end groups on the rheological, mechanical and thermal properties of the uncured and UV cured mixtures diluted with 20 wt.% hexanediol diacrylate was examined. The nature of non-acrylic end groups have great effect on the interaction between linear and hyperbranched urethane acrylates, which further has a crucial influence on the examined properties of uncured and UV cured mixture samples.

AB - Incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles can significantly affect the properties of the polymer matrix. The properties of polymer nanocomposites depend on the type of incorporated nanoparticles, their size and shape, their concentration, and interactions with the polymer matrix. Homogeneity of polymer nanocomposites is influenced very much by the preparation method. In this study, TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with 6-palmitate ascorbic acid (6-PAA) were encapsulated in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by in situ radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The surface modification of the TiO2 nanoparticles was achieved by the formation of a charge transfer complex between TiO2 nanoparticles and 6-palmitate ascorbic acid. The radical polymerization of MMA in the presence of TiO2-PAA nanoparticles was conducted in solution (PMMA/TiO2-PAA-R), in bulk (PMMA/TiO2-PAA-M) or in suspension (PMMA/TiO2-PAA-S). The main purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the preparation method on the molar masses and thermal properties of PMMA/TiO2-PAA nanocomposite. It was obtained that molar masses of PMMA extracted from the composites had smaller values compared to molar masses of pure PMMA synthesized in the same manner, which indicated that TiO2-PAA nanoparticles affected the reaction of termination. Thermal properties were investigated by DSC and TGA. The values of glass transition temperature, Tg, were influenced by the way the radical polymerization was conducted, even in the case of the pure PMMA. The Tg of composite samples was always smaller than the value of the corresponding PMMA sample and the smallest value was obtained for PMMA/TiO2-PAA-M since they contained the largest amount of low molar mass residue. The TGA results showed that thermal and thermooxidative stability of polymer composites obtained in solution and in suspension was better than for the pure PMMA obtained in the same way.

AB - Carboxymethyl starch samples were prepared by etherification in heterogeneous media. Three samples were prepared from corn starch and three samples from potato starch. Degree of substitution of prepared samples ranged from 0.40 to 1.10. The samples were investigated by static and dynamic light scattering and viscosity of diluted solution in 0.10 M NaCl as solvent at 25 °C. The values of molar mass, MW, radius of gyration, Rg, hydrodynamic radius, Rh, and limited viscosity number, [η] were determined. It was found that the samples are similar to each other regardless of the type of starch and the degree of substitution. Fractal dimension, d f, was equal to 2.380 (Rg - MW) and 2.406 (Rη - MW), while parameter ρ was 1.195. The values of fractal dimension and parameter ρ are characteristic values for the behavior of branched clusters in thermodynamically good solvents.

AB - The surface of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride, was modified by 6-palmitate ascorbic acid. The surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed in methyl methacrylate and mixed with a appropriate amount of poly(methyl methacrylate) to obtain a syrup. The nano-composite sheets were made by bulk polymerization of the syrup in a glass sandwich cell using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The molar masses and molar mass distributions of synthesized poly(methyl methacrylate) samples were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The content of unreacted double bonds in synthesized samples was determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The influence of TiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal stability of the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The synthesized samples of poly(methyl methacrylate) have different molar mass and polydispersity depending on the content of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles. The values of glass transition temperature of so prepared nanocomposite samples were lower than for pure poly(methyl methacrylate), while the glass transition temperature of samples preheated in inert atmosphere was very similar to the glass transition temperature of pure poly(methyl methacrylate). The thermal stability of nanocomposite samples in nitrogen and air was different from thermal stability of pure poly(methyl methacrylate). POLYM. COMPOS., 30:737-742, 2009.

POLYM. COMPOS., 30:737-742, 2009.",

AB - Surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles dissolved in toluene were encapsulated in PMMA by in situ radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile. The surface modification of the TiO2 nanoparticles (average diameter of 4.5 nm) was achieved by the formation of a charge transfer complex between TiO2 nanoparticles and 6-palmitate ascorbic acid. The surface modified TiO2/nanoparticles were characterized using UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, while the obtained polymer nanocomposites were characterized using reflection and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, as well as gel permeation chromatography. The influence of the TiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal properties of the PMMA matrix was investigated using thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The glass transition temperature of the polymer was not influenced by the presence of the nanoparticles while the thermal stability was significantly improved.

AB - Urethane acrylate resins based on partially modified aliphatic hyperbranched polyesters (HBP) were synthesized. HBP of the second and the third pseudo-generation were synthesized from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid and di-trimethylol propane. The modification of 60% of the OH end-groups was carried out with isononanoic acid. Urethane acrylates with different degrees of acrylation were obtained by reaction of partially modified HBP and different amounts of acrylate-isocyanate adduct (NCO), which had been previously obtained by reaction of equimolar amounts of isophorone diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. The synthesized samples were characterized by FT-IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and GPC. The rheological properties of uncured samples and the mechanical and thermal properties of UV cured urethane acrylates diluted with 20 wt.% hexanediol diacrylate were examined. The modification of the OH end-groups with isononanoic acid caused a rapid decrease in the viscosity of the HBPs. The examined properties of the urethane acrylates mainly depended on the degree of acrylation.

AB - The electrically conductive, micron-sized, core/shell polystyrene (PS)/polyaniline (PANI) composite particles were synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of micron-sized PS particles in 1 M HCl. The conditions of the dispersion polymerization of styrene were optimized. The influence of the initiator type employed for the chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline and the aniline (ANI) concentration on the PS/PANI particle size and size distribution and their conductivity was investigated. The obtained results show that the conductivity of the samples increased with increasing ANI concentration. The conductivity of the PS/PANI composite particles obtained with the highest ANI concentration was of the same order of magnitude as that for PANI powder. The particle size did not depend on the concentration of ANI, while the particle size distribution was narrower at higher concentrations of ANI.

AB - Twelve modified dithiocarbamates and a thiuramdisulfide used for the initiation of methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization were synthesized in this study. The polymerization of MMA was followed by determine the yield and molar mass of the obtained PMMA as a function of polymerization time. Four of the synthesized dithiocarbamates S-benzyl-N,N-dibenzyldithiocarbamate, S-allyl-N,N-dibenzyldithiocarbamate S-benzyl-N,N-diisobutyldithiocarbamate and S-benzoyl-N,N-diisobutyldithiocarbamate, as well as N,N,N',N'-tetrabenzylthiuramdisulfide acted as iniferters. They were active as the initiators of the photo and/or thermally initiated radical polymerization of MMA in bulk and inert solvents (benzene and toluene). S Benzyl - N,N - dibenzyldithiocarbamate can be successfully used for the initiation of MMA polymerization in a polar solvent such as dimethylacetamide.
AB - Starch esterification with benzoyl chloride was performed in two steps, the first being the alkali treatment of the starch and the second, esterification. Samples of hydrophobic starch benzoate were synthesized with degrees of substitution: 0.73.1.18 and 1.16 and their thermal stability was investigated by non-oxidative, non-isothermal thermogravimetry. It was shown that starch benzoate was thermally less stable than native starch, the thermal stability decreasing with increasing degree of substitution. The results indicated that the scission of CO2 and/or benzoyl groups probably occurred in the temperature region 100-260 degreesC, depending on the dear of substitution. The overall activation energies of thermal degradation were calculated by the Flynn-Wall method.

abstract = "Starch esterification with benzoyl chloride was performed in two steps, the first being the alkali treatment of the starch and the second, esterification. The overall activation energies of thermal degradation were calculated by the Flynn-Wall method.",

AB - The goal of these investigations was to define the process parameters that enable the formation of a composite coating with the most uniform thickness on an optical fiber. The composite coating was obtained by drawing the optical fiber through a reservoir with a die at the bottom. The reservoir was supplied with a dispersion of magnetic powder in a polymer solution. The effect of the dispersion viscosity, powder concentration and drawing rate on the uniformity of the composite coating thickness under laboratory conditions was investigated on a defined system to establish the optimal coating conditions. Dispersions were formed by dispersing different concentrations of Ba-ferrite in a poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) solution in toluene. The thickness of the coatings and its uniformity were determined by microscopic analysis and further evaluated by mathematical-statistical analysis. The smallest standard deviation (S.D.) of the mean value of the diameter of the optical fiber with a composite coating was chosen as the criteria for defining the most uniform composite coating. The results show that the most uniform coatings were obtained with a dispersion viscosity whose value was about 1.2 Pa s. All the process parameters should be established in accordance with this viscosity value, enabling the formation of the most uniform composite coating for the investigated system.

AB - Thermoplastic starch (TPS) was blended in a twin screw mixer with 5 and 10 mass % of poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) or cellulose acetate (CA) in order to improve the TPS properties. The influence of such low amounts of thermoplastic polymer (TPP) on the processability, mechanical properties and water resistance of TPS was investigated. The specimens for mechanical properties determinaiton were conditioned at 45, 67 acid 85% relative humidity (RH) before measurements. Processability, characterized by viscosity vs. shear rate dependence, was determined by capillary rheometry. The obtained results showed that the TPS blends behaved as pseudoplastic polymers and that even 10 mass% of EAA or EVA significantly decreased the TPS viscosity, whereas addition of the same amount of CA had no influence on the TPS viscosity. Tensile measurements showed that the RH had a much larger influence on the tensile properties than the addition of the investigated TPP. Tensile strength and tensile modulus values for TPS and its blends, after conditioning at 45% RH were an order of magnitude larger than the values for the corresponding samples kept at 85% RH, whereas elongation at break values were nearly ten times smaller. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the TPS and its blends was performed using a mechanical spectrometer. The specimens were subjected to dynamic torsion at a constant frequency in the temperature range from 30 to 170 degrees C. The glass transition temperature, determined from the temperature dependence of tan delta, was influenced much more by relative humidity than by the type of TPP used. The swelling of the TPS and the investigated blends was determined gravimetrically. It was found that the TPS/EAA blends had the largest water resistance.

AB - Native starch and WX-starch, i.e., native starch enriched with amylopectin, were mixed with plasticizers and thermomechanically treated in a twin screw mixer in order to obtain thermoplastic starch. Ethylene glycol, propane tricl (glycerine) or poly(ethylene glycol) with a molar mass less than 1000 g/mol were used as plasticizers. Transformation to thermoplastic starch was only successful when glycerine or ethylene glycol were used as the plasticizers, the temperature of the thermomechanical treatment being dependent on the plasticizer and starch used. Rheological properties of the obtained thermoplastic starch were determined using a mechanical spectrometer. As a result of these measurements, the complex viscosity (η*), shear moćulus of stored (G') and of lost energy (G'') were obtained as a function of frequency at constant temperature. The measurements were performed at three temperatures: 140, 170 and 210°C. The results obtained showed that the thermoplastic starch behaved like a typical thermoplastic polymer.

AB - The effect of molar mass and, in the case of dextran, of the degree of branching on the thermal degradation kinetics of dextran and pullulan was studied in the presence and absence of oxygen. Although the initial mass loss of the dextran samples occurred at higher temperatures than that of the pullulan samples, the overall thermal degradation activation energies were lower for dextran than for pullulan. In the case of dextran the thermal stability was found to decrease with molar mass and degree of branching. The molar mass of pullulan, in the range of 104 to 105 g/mol, appeared to have no significant influence on the thermal characteristics of the samples.
