AB - the antimicrobial textile material. The material is in the form of plaster wound dressing which is consisting of a nonwoven textile base containing polypropylene (PP)/viscose, a polymer carrier, and an antimicrobial active substance. The polymer carrier is the polysaccharide D-glucosamine (chitosan), and the active antimicrobial substance is antibiotic gentamicin sulfate. The amount of gentamicin sulfate immobilized into the polymer matrix of the polymer carrier was 0.15-0.20 mg/cm(2) or 2.0-2.5% of the mass of the nonwoven textile material. The antimicrobial textile material has been studied in vitro and in vivo conditions through the efficiency of the antimicrobial effects on different kinds of pathogenic microorganisms, as well as the biocompatibility in preclinical research. The results of these experiments indicate that all bioactive textile materials were biocidal in vitro for all pathogenic test organisms. Good biocompatibility, the existence of the correlation between the in vitro and in vivo results, concerning efficiency, qualifies these antimicrobial biornaterials for clinical use.

AB - The paper discusses the antimicrobial bioactive band-aids, a modem means of wound management and healing, which are effective against a wide spectrum of microorganisms. Ion-exchange fibres and nonwoven textile materials composed of PP/viscose blend were used as a textile basis. Antimicrobial bioactive band-aids were manufactured in two routs:. -by chemisorption of gentamicin sulfate by ion-exchange fibres; and-by adhesion of gentamicin sulfate on nonwoven material with the aid of a polymer carrier (chitosan). For assessment of antimicrobial activity, the diffusion method on an agar medium has been used. Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans have been utilised. The kinetics of active substance desorption has been examined through dissolving rate of medical substance from transdermal band-aid in vitro.Physical-chemical foundations and kinetics of desorption of gentamicin sulfate in vitro are described by a mathematical model which can be used for prognosis of prolonged release of medical substance from band-aid as a transdermal system.

AB - A mathematical model was developed to estimate the release of gentamicin sulfate from a bioactive textile material as a transdermal system for wound dressing. The gentamicin sulfate released from the antibiotic/chitosan hydrogel complexes was measured in vitro by the Franz diffusion cell technique. The diffusive transport of gentamicin sulfate through three connected compartments, that is, chitosan hydrogel, membrane, and solution, was considered by the formulation of a model based on Fick's second law. Initially, the total amount of gentamicin sulfate was placed within an already swollen chitosan hydrogel. The value of the diffusivity coefficient of the drug through the chitosan hydrogel was calculated for every initial amount of the active substance. For the initial concentration of gentamicin sulfate, which was lower than 2.81 x 10(4) mu g/mL, the diffusion coefficient was approximately constant. A higher amount of gentamicin sulfate in the hydrogel reduced its own transport as a consequence of an increase in the intensity of the interaction field between the molecules of gentamicin sulfate. The model provides the possibility of optimizing the process of drug release by ensuring a compromise between a higher value of the diffusivity coefficient and a desirable amount of gentamicin sulfate and a constant concentration within the solution over 48 h.

AB - In this paper an account of biocompatibility of a hormonactive fiber in the form of biologically active complex chitosan-insulin is presented. The behavior of artificial depots of insulin containing 180-330mg of insulin per gram of fiber has been studied. The artificial depot of insulin has been characterized from the standpoint of its behavior in physiological solution (in the culture of L929 cells and in organism of an experimental animal). In vitro conditions, the intensity of desorption depends on the nature of solution and on pH of medium. It has been shown that insulin is controllably delivered in physiological solutions in quantities of 1.3-1.6mg of insulin during 24 hours, at pH about 7. The quantity of insulin delivered has been assessed by UV Sprectrophotometry. Biocompatibility of hormone-active fibers in the form of artificial depot of insulin has been determined in pre-clinical conditions through determination of the degree of harmfulness (toxicity) to the organism of the experimental animal. Tests have been performed according to the matrix for testing of biocompatibility and according to recommendations and guides published in Guidelines ISO 10993. Noxiousness has been assessed by testing: citotoxicity, sensitivization and irritation. Qualitative and quantitative citotoxicity tests in direct contact on L929 cells culture have shown that a hormone-active fiber does not provoke the citotoxic effect. The results obtained have shown that quantities of controllably released insulin could satisfy basal needs of an organism and that the artificial depot does not show effects of toxicity. On the bases of the obtained results from tests and calculated index of sensitivitization it follows that the artificial depot of insulin does not cause sensitivization. Also, the results obtained by subcutaneous irritation testing showed that the fibrous artificial depot of insulin could be eveluated as a non-irritating bioactive material.
Toksičnost je ispitana kroz testiranje: senzibilizacije i primarne kutane iritacije in vivo i testiranje citotoksičnosti (kvalitativno i kvantitativno) u kulturi L929 ćelija.

AB - The influence of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the physico-chemical properties of hemp fibres was studied in this paper. Plasma-modification of hemp fibres was performed at atmospheric pressure. The source of the DBD was developed in the Quantum Optics Laboratory of the Faculty of Physics in Belgrade as a device prototype with plane-parallel geometry, for the continuous plasma-modification or treatment of textile materials. The capillary rise method was applied to evaluate the improvement in water uptake of the DBD treated hemp fibres. The plasma-modified hemp fibres have highly improved wetting properties without changing physico-mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation).

AB - This paper gives an overview of the current state in the field of cellulosic fibers functionalization by chemical modification. The emphasis is placed on the selective (periodate and TEMPO oxidation) and non-selective (permanganate and peroxide) cellulose oxidation, non-conventional methods for obtaining man-made cellulosic fibers, methods for obtaining antimicrobial cellulosic fibers, as well as method for obtaining two-component polysaccharide fibers. To provide evidence on the achieved functionalities we mainly used capillary rise method, moisture and iodine sorption method, water retention power, NaOH uptake, different ions sorption, Cu-number, carbonyl-and carboxyl-selective labeling and antimicrobial tests.
AB - U ovom radu dat je prikaz sadašnjeg stanja u oblasti funkcionalizacije celuloznih vlakana nemijskim modifikovanjem, sa posebnim osvrtom na selektivnu oksidaciju perjodatima i TEMPO-m, neselektivnu oksidaciju celuloznih vlakana permanganatom i peroksidima, nekonvencionalne postupke dobijanja hemijskih celuloznih vlakana, postupcima dobijanja antimikrobnih celuloznih vlakana, kao i mogućnostima za dobijanje dvokomponentih celuloznih vlakana na bazi polisaharida. Kapilarnost, sorpcija vlage i joda sposobnost zadržavanja vode, sorpcija različitih jona, bakrov broj selektivno obeležavanje karbonilnih i karboksilnih grupa, kao i antimikrobni testovi su neke od metoda korišćenje za karakterisanje postignutih efekata modifikovanja.

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the phenomenon and kinetics of insulin chemisorption by cation-exchange acrylic fibers, as well as the development of theoretical modeling of the chemisorption process. Change of the insulin concentration in solution was determined by UV spectrophotometric method. The profile of insulin concentration in the fiber was determined by application of mathematical model. The developed mathematical model describes the chemisorption process using fractional kinetics equations of diffusion. Taking all the relevant conditions, regarding this experiment, into consideration, the coefficient of insulin diffusion into the fiber, overdamped effect parameter, as well as the concentration ratio parameter were determined by the mathematical model. Proposed modeling approach is useful for the description of transport dynamics in complex systems as polymer transport through the porous matrices, which are governed by anomalous diffusion.

AB - The use of textile materials in medicine has a long tradition. An important field of application of textiles in medicine is in wound care and prevention of chronic wounds, for which bandages and wound dressings are used. Modern medicine demands textile materials with special properties. The most important are biologically active fibers, and among them antimicrobial fibers which are able to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi and/or other pathogenic microorganisms. Due to their high efficacy, antimicrobial fibers have become necessary in prevention and therapy, especially in festering wound healing and prevention of chronic wounds. Among all biologically active fibers and biomedical textile materials antimicrobial fibers are mostly used, mainly because of their ability for controlled and long-term releasing of antimicrobial agents and their stability against inactive factors, as well as their simple and easy application. The scope of this review focuses on properties of antimicrobial fibers and mechanisms of their antimicrobial activity, as well as physicochemical bases of antimicrobial fibers obtaining and test methods used to confirm their antimicrobial activity. Also, representative pathogenic microorganisms are listed. Antimicrobial fibers of natural and synthetic origin are reviewed, as well as advances and future trends in their development.
Zbog svoje visoke efektivnosti antimikrobna vlakna zauzimaju značajno mesto u profilaksi i terapiji, posebno gnojnih procesa i rana.

AB - The aim of this study was to study insulin desorption from fibrous insulin artificial store in vitro as well as in vivo, with the intention to define a mathematical model that would describe this process. Release profile of cylindrical fibrous matrixes for various insulin concentrations, desorption temperatures, time periods, and pH were presented. Change of insulin concentration in the fibers and the effect of insulin release were discussed. This model was also used to predict the optimal conditions of the release process. Possibility of predicting the effect of the fibrous store design parameters (fibre radius, amount of bonded insulin, fiber type) on the resulting insulin release rate was the major advantage of this mathematical model. Also, taking all the relevant conditions regarding these experiments into consideration, by the application of mathematical model, the diffusion coefficient during insulin release was determined.

AB - In the past, insulin was frequently administered by hypodermic injection, as liquids forms. To avoid problems incurred through the utilization of the injectable route of insulin administration, new dosage forms containing the insulin were introduced. Therefore, insulin delivery systems were developed to optimize the therapeutic properties of drug products and render them safer, more effective, and more reliable. The aim of this article is to present the modeling of the controlled releasing process of insulin from a fibrous artificial store. The release of insulin has been evaluated in both a physiological solution and blood serum in vitro and on experimental animals (mice) in vivo. On the basis of experimental results a mathematical model of diffusion-mediated release of insulin from cation-exchange fiber has been developed and presented in this paper.

AB - An effective two-stage method for obtaining both biologically activated fibres with antibacterial and anaesthetic activity and biologically activated complex fibres -insulin as an artificial store of insulin has been developed. The first stage involves the formation of reactive functional groups by chemical modification, followed by the second stage where the fibres are modified with chemotherapeutic agent solutions. This paper presents the results of obtaining biologically activated fibres with antibacterial and anaesthetic activity as well as an artificial store of insulin in the form of complex ion-exchanged fibre-insulin. The level of immobilisation of the drug in the antibacterial fibre amounts to 140 mg of gentamicin sulphate per 1 g of fibres, in the anaesthetic fibre 180 mg of procaine hydrochloride per 1 g of fibres, and in the fibrous store of insulin 800 mg of insulin per 1 g of fibres. 2002

AB - The paper fives an overview of the current state in the field of various cellulosic fibres, such as cotton, flax, hemp, juta, viscosa and lyocell, as well as future prospects of these fibres. World production and consumption of atural and chemical cellulosic fibres were stabilized at certain level with small oscillation in the last few years. Cotton production reaches average level at 19 mil.ton, fax production at 0.4 mil.ton and hemp production at 0.07 mil.ton. While there is a strong expansion of the synthetic fibres industry, chemical cellulosic fibres have the same level of production at 2.4 mil.ton during the long period. Cellulosic fibres will again play a major role in the future due to growing market of hydrophylic fibres and tendency to develop production of natural, light, renewable and biodegradable fibres. It is expected that cellulosic fibres only for clothing, will be in demand up to 38 mil.ton/year in the year 2050.

Formirani PMMA monofilamenti, različitih prečnika (0,3-1mm) i koeficijenata varijacije prečnika oko 1% poseduju dobre mehaničke karakteristike (prekidna jačina 2,9-17,1cN/tex).

In order to determine the optimal parameters of the spinning process of PMMA fibers, extrusion temperature and velocity, take-up velocity and quenching conditions have been varied. The coefficients of variation of fiber diameter were used as optimization parameter. PMMA monofilaments with various diameters (0,3-1mm) and the coefficients of variation of fiber diameter (around 1%) were obtained, which possessed good mechanical properties (relative breaking load 2,9-17,1cN/tex).

AB - Polyester-urethane (BASF, Elastolan SP 876-10) matrix was modified by blending with biologically originated polyester (ICI Biological Products, Biopol), in the hope to make the in situ composite during fiber spinning. Biopol (statistic copolyester poly-3-hidroxo butyrate-co-hydroxo valerate, PHB/8.4% HV) was blended in amounts 5, 10 and 15 wt% with polyurethane. Thermal, rheological and structural properties of blends polyurethane-Biopol were examined. Given results indicated good compatibility of two polymers and possibility for forming fibers from their blends.

AB - After the strong expansion in 1994, the world production of chemical fibres (synthetics, cellulosics) in 1996 increased only to the degree which had been normal in the previous years. The world production of chemical fibres increased by one million tons, or 4 % up to 24.1 million tons. The synthestics production increased by 1.1 million tons, or 5 % up to 21.3 million tons, while the cellulosics dropped by 5% or 125.000 tons down to 28 million tons (including acetate cigarette filter tow). On the other hand cotton and wool production in 1996 stagnated on the previous years level. Major changes in fibre technology will take place in the next ten years and will substantially influence quality and production costs. Textile industry of Federal Rebuplic of Yugoslavia follows the trend already established in the textile industry of former Yugoslavia and surrounding countries. Production of natural fibres is low and the structure of possible production of chemical fibres is not balanced regarding the fibre types. Therefore, the Yugoslav textile industry imports a substantial quantity of raw materials.

AB - In this paper, the short background to the development of polymer optical fibres and their classification are presented. Therefore, physical principles of optical waveguides and their advantages to the metallic conductors are discussed. Manufacturing techniques and properties of polymer optical fibres are described in details. The presently available fibres suffer from two major disadvantages, namely the relatively high loss and the low maximum operating temperature. On this account, further improvement and a more application are expected in the future.

AB - Viskozna vlakna sa inkorporiranim ugljenikom imaju specifična svojstva i namenu. U procesu zagrevanja viskoznih vlakana i korda u prisustvu kiseonika, usled promene kretanja strukturnih elemenata i hemijskih promena, dolazi do značajnih izmena njihovih fiziko-mehaničkih svojstava.
AB - Viscose fibres with incorporate carbon have specific properties and application. In the heating process of viscose fibres and cord in the presence of oxigen, their physico-mechanical properties have been changed as a result of chemical changes and movement change of structural elements. This paper deals with influence of incorporate carbon on the thermo-mechanical properties of viscose fibres and cord in temperature intervale 30-310°C. The dependance of the storage modulus (E') and tangens of the loss angle on the temperature are studied by thermo-mechanical analyses.
