AB - Coumarin derivates possess several biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticoagulant, antitumor, insecticidal, anthelminthic, hypnotic, antifungal, and HIV protease inhibition properties [1,2]. Due to their solubility in organic solvents and insolubility in water and body fluids, their bioavailability is significantlylow. Thus, they can be encapsulated intoliposomal particles with the aim of overcoming the mentioned disadvan-tage[3]. Hence, in the present study, coumarin derivate was encapsulated in phospholipid liposomes and their stability was monitored for 60 days in terms of vesicle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, and mobility.

AB - In the study, the optimization of the extraction from Aloe vera leaf waste was performed via varying solid-to-solvent ratio, solvent type, extraction time, and technique (maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions—HAE, UAE, and MAE, respectively). The optimal extraction conditions for achieving the highest polyphenol content are a 1:30 ratio, 70% ethanol, and 30 min of HAE. Total flavonoid and protein contents were significantly higher in the extract from MAE, while total condensed tannin content was the highest in HAE. LC-MS analysis quantified 13 anthraquinone and chromone compounds. The variations in the FT-IR spectra of the extracts obtained by different extraction procedures are minor. The influence of extraction conditions on the antioxidant ability of the extracts depended on applied antioxidant assays. The extracts possessed medium inhibition properties against Staphylococcus aureus and weak inhibitory activity against Enterococcus feacalis. The extracts had stimulative effect on HaCaT cell viability. Regarding the extraction yield, there was a significant difference between the used extraction techniques (MAE > HAE > maceration and UAE). The presented study is an initial step in the production of polyphenol-rich extracts from A. vera leaf waste aimed to be used for the potential preparation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations for the skin.

AB - The presented study aimed to optimize polyphenol extraction from Satureja montana L. obtained from the experimental field of the Institute for Medicinal Plants Research ”Dr Josif Pančić”, Serbia, by varying the most important parameters for maceration, solid-to-solvent ratio, and extraction time. The obtained extracts were characterized regarding the total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant potential, extraction yield, conductivity, density, surface tension, and viscosity. The TPC and TFC were ~7 to 92 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g and 3.7 to 10.9 mg CE (catechin equivalent)/g, respectively. The highest extraction yield (86 %) as well as the highest antioxidant activities were obtained for the extracts prepared using a solid-to-solvent ratio of 1 g:50 cm3. On the other hand, the extraction time did not have a significant influence. The highest conductivity was measured in the extract prepared at a 1 g:10 cm3 ratio, while the highest density and surface tension were in the extract prepared at a 1 g:40 cm3 ratio (941 kg m-3 and 29.0 mN m-1, respectively). The highest viscosity was measured in the extract prepared at a 1 g: 20 cm3 ratio (2.89 mPa∙s). Our study shows the possibilities for the production of polyphenol-rich extract of S. montana which might be used in pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic products.

AB - Paeonia tenuifolia L. (steppe peony) petal extract was proficiently encapsulated into liposomes and biopolymer films in the current work, both times utilizing a single-step procedure. The encapsulation efficiency, size of the particles, and index of polydispersity (PDI), as well as the ζ potential of the obtained liposomes were determined, whereas in the case of films, the test included moisture content and mechanical property assessment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to evaluate the chemical composition and existence of numerous interactions in the systems. All the obtained encapsulates were subjected to antibacterial, antifungal and antibiofilm activity testing of the pathogens associated with human skin. The results indicated that the liposomes prepared using Phospholipon had the highest encapsulation efficiency (72.04%), making them the most favorable ones in the release study as well. The biological assays also revealed that Phospholipon was the most beneficial phospholipid mixture for the preparation of liposomes, whereas the film containing these liposomes did not have the ability to inhibit pathogen growth, making the double encapsulation of P. tenuifolia L. petal extract needless. These findings may be a first step toward the potential use of steppe peony extract-loaded films and liposomes in pharmaceutical and cosmetical industries.

AB - Management of waste polymers (polyethylene - PE and polypropylene - PP) represents one of the major obstacles in the field of environmental protection, which demands a most efficient and eco-friendly technological solution. Due to the high use of various plastic materials, the amount of landfilled or dissipated plastic waste is continuously growing. Therefore, this paper examines the possibilities of recycling these polymers, alongside obtaining granules of similar or advanced physico-mechanical characteristics to the commercially available ones. The applied technology consists of several consecutive processes (collecting, grinding, washing and extruding) where the obtained materials can later be incorporated into widely applicable products, such as foils, bin liners, bags, among others. In this way, high-quality products with great market potential are obtained, which will consequently contribute to lower extraction and less depletion of natural resources. Thus major problems may be solved optimally, consolidating the efficiency of improved eco-friendly technologies which is in line with environmental protection and sustainable waste management.
