AB - The shell of Lagenaria vulgaris (LV) plant was used as biosorbent for strontium removal from aqueous solutions. Chemical structure of the biosorbent's surface was characterized by the means of FTIR and Boehm's titrations. SEM-EDX technique was used to study the morphology and elemental composition of the material. The analyses pointed out to abundance of acidic functional groups which are charged in solution and hence responsible for ionic exchange of Sr(II) ions. Sorption was examined by varying initial concentrations of Sr(II) in solutions, sorbent's loadings, pH, and contacting times. Equilibrium of the process was attained in the first 10 min of contacting and followed pseudo-second order and Chrastil's kinetic models. It was established that sorption onto aLVB was heterogenous by nature and fitted well to Freundlich and Sips isotherm models with maximum sorption capacity of 29.55 mg g(-1). Sorption potentail was kept high after six cycles when acidic desorbents were used.

AB - Pollution control and water purification are the main concerns associated with hazardous component eliminations from wastewaters which have inspired the research, among the others, on various clay minerals as useful adsorbents. The aim of this study was to examine morphological, structural, adsorption, and electrochemical characteristics of serpentinite in order to check its potential for removal of cadmium and textile dyes from synthetic waters. SEM technique has provided a detailed insight into the surface morphology of serpentinite indicating irregularly shaped particles and lamellar aggregates which are characteristic of lizardite mineral. Crystal phases detected in composition of serpentinite by using XRD technique are lizardite and tiny amount of periclase. Serpentinite adsorption characteristics were investigated towards Cd2+ and anionic textile dyes (Procion red MX-5B, Procion orange and Ramazol black) in aqueous solutions. The main goal of the study was the reliable removal of hazardous Cd2+ at low initial concentrations (up to 200 mu g/dm(3)). Textile dyes were taken as the models of anionic organic pollutants in water. All the adsorption experiments were carried out in batch conditions by varying initial parameters such as concentration of pollutant, contact time, mass of adsorbent and pH. Based on the obtained results, serpentinite has proven to be efficient adsorbent with removal efficiency over 98% for the selected pollutants. Native serpentinite was further modified in order to obtain forsterite. Electrochemical characteristics of serpentinite and forsterite were examined by using cyclic voltammetry of solution of 0.1 M H2SO4 as acidic supporting electrolyte and K-4[Fe(CN)(6)] which was chosen as a redox model compound. Due to its specific structure, surface groups, morphology, and non-stoichiometric composition, serpentinite and forsterite exhibited prominent electrocatalytic activity.

AB - Ordered mesoporous carbon, volume-doped up to 3w.% with Pt, Ru and Pt-Ru nanoparticles was synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly method, under acidic conditions. The content of incorporated metal was determined by EDX analysis. The X-ray diffractometry confirmed the existence of highly dispersed metallic phases in doped samples. Specific surface area was determined by N-2-physisorption measurements to range between 452 and 545m(2) g(-1). Raman spectroscopy of investigated materials indicated highly disordered carbon structure with crystallite sizes around 1.4 nm. In a form of thin-layer electrode on glassy carbon support, in 0.1M KOH solution, the prepared materials displayed high activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, with onset potentials more positive than -0.10 V vs. SCE. The kinetics of O-2 reduction was found to be affected by both the specific surface area and the concentration of metal dopants. The ethanol tolerance of (Pt, Ru)-doped OMCs was found to be higher than that of common Pt/C ORR catalysts. Presented study provides a new route for the synthesis of active and selective ORR catalysts in alkaline media, being competitive with, or superior to, the existing ones in terms of performance and price. AB - Carbon cryogel (CC) has been prepared through sol gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde in basic aqueous solution followed by freeze-drying and carbonization. Porous properties of CC analyzed by gravimetric McBain method confirmed the expected surface area and degree of mesoporosity. Obtained powdered material was used for the removal of pesticide imidacloprid from aqueous solutions under regular batch adsorption procedure. A set of several isotherm models including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Brouers-Sotolongo, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, Jovanovic, Hurkins-Jura, Halsey and Radke-Prausnitz model was used for nonlinear fitting of equilibrium data. Several models fitted with quite high correlation coefficients. Bangham and Elovich model fitted suitably for kinetic study indicating that pesticide diffusion into carbons pores is important step which dictates the process rate. Suitability of kinetic models decreased with the increase in adsorbent dosage. Imidacloprid uptake was not influenced by the solution pH.

AB - A resorcinol-formaldehyde carbon cryogel was prepared, characterized and used for the removal of the commonly used herbicide clopyralid from aqueous solutions under varying experimental conditions. The carbon exhibited a relatively high specific surface area, significant mesoporosity and an amorphous structure. The following isotherm models were used to interpret the equilibrium data: the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Jovanovic, Hurkins-Jura and the Helsey Model. Several models fitted the data well although the calculated values for q(max) poorly correlated with the experimentally obtained data. The pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, the models of Elovich, Bangham and the intraparticle diffusion model were employed for fitting the kinetic data. The rate of the process was fast at the beginning, although the adsorption equilibrium was not attained before 24 h. The adsorption was found to be pH dependent and favored in acidic solutions.

AB - The ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 was synthesized and used as a template for obtaining mesoporous carbon replicas. Adsorptive removal of pesticide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from aqueous solutions onto two carbon replicas was investigated. Batch adsorption experiments varied in initial adsorptive concentration, contacting times, solution pH, and adsorbent dosage. Pseudo-first order model, pseudo-second order model, and intraparticle diffusion model were selected to interpret the kinetics of adsorption. Kinetic parameters such as rate constants, equilibrium adsorption capacities and correlation coefficients were calculated and discussed for each model. Equilibrium data were linearly fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Tamkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Jovanovic, Hurkins-Jura and Halsey isotherm models. It was shown that adsorption of 2,4-D onto two carbon replicas well followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Langmuir isotherm represented experimental data in the best way since this model gave the best fit. Adsorption capacity strongly depends on the solution pH and increases at lower pH values.

Langmuir isotherm represented experimental data in the best way since this model gave the best fit. Adsorption capacity strongly depends on the solution pH and increases at lower pH values.",

AB - Pine cones of European Black pine are utilized as a precursor for obtaining powdered activated carbon. The concentrated phosphoric acid was used as an activating agent. A detailed study of the imidacloprid adsorption onto the obtained material was conducted. In this paper, the adsorption kinetics, the conditions of establishing equilibrium, the impact of the adsorbent mass, and pH of solutions was analyzed. It was concluded that in a short period 90 % of pesticide is removed from model solutions under the applied conditions, while the removal degree is even higher for lower initial concentrations and higher adsorbent masses. It was also elucidated that this pesticide is equally well adsorbed in both acid and basic solutions.

AB - Adsorption of a cationic phenothyazine dye, Methylene Blue onto activated carbon prepared from pinecones was investigated. The parameters contact time, dye concentration and pH were varied. The kinetic data were found to follow closely the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity of 233.1 mg g(-1). The adsorption was favored by using a higher solution pH. Textural analysis by nitrogen adsorption was used to determine the specific surface area and pore structure of the obtained carbon. Boehm titrations revealed that carboxylic groups were present in a high degree on the carbon surface. The results indicate that the presented method for activation of pinecones could yield activated carbon with significant porosity, a developed surface reactivity and a considerable adsorption affinity toward the cationic dye Methylene Blue.
