AB - The simulated shapes of the polarization curves were correlated with the type of metal electrodeposition process control as a function of the ratio of the exchange current density to the limiting diffusion current density (j(0)/j(L)). Diagnostic criteria based on the j(0)/j(L) ratios were established. For j(0)/j(L) > 100, the system is under the ohmic control. In the range 1 LT j(0)/j(L) LT = 100, there is mixed ohmic-diffusion control. Pure diffusion control appears in the range 0.1 LT j(0)/j(L) LT = 1. For j(0)/j(L) LT = 0.1, the system is activation controlled at low overpotentials. The proposed diagnostic criteria were verified by comparison of the simulated curves with experimentally recorded ones and by morphological analysis of deposits obtained under the different types of control of the metal electrodeposition process.

AB - Electrodeposition of lead from the concentrated nitrate electrolyte in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis has been investigated by the analysis of the potentiostatic current transients and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the process of Pb nucleation from the concentrated electrolyte follows Scharifker model based on the 3D (three-dimensional) instantaneous nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth. The deviations of the obtained dependencies from the theoretical prediction for this model have been also discussed. Needle-like and fern-like dendrites, as well as crystals of irregular shape (precursors of dendrites) were formed in the diffusion controlled electrodeposition. The SEM analysis of these dendritic forms revealed their 2D (two-dimensional) growth. The size of needle-like dendrites was considerably larger than the size of both the fern-like dendrites and the irregular crystals. Although the electrodeposition process occurred inside the linear diffusion layer of the macroelectrode, the shape and size of dendrites were determined by the effect of local diffusion fields formed around tips (spherical diffusion) and top edges (cylindrical diffusion) of protrusions formed in the initial stage of the electrodeposition. The growth rates under the conditions of spherical and cylindrical diffusion control were mutually compared and a faster growth under the conditions of the spherical, in relation to the cylindrical diffusion, was proved. The effect of the current density distribution on formation of the final forms of Pb dendrites was also discussed.

AB - The processes of Pb electrodeposition under diffusion control were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the formed crystals. The orientation of grains of hexagonal shape formed in the initial stage of electrodeposition strongly affected the final morphology of the Pb crystals. The formation of Pb crystals of the different shape from the same initial shape was discussed in terms of the effect of orientation of initially formed grains on the type of diffusion control. A spherical diffusion layer was formed around the tip of the hexagonal-shaped grain oriented with its tip towards the bulk solution that led to the formation of elongated crystals in the growth process. On the other hand, a cylindrical type of diffusion was responsible for the growth of hexagonal-shaped grains oriented with the lateral side towards the bulk solution. Pb crystals with well-defined sides parallel to the surface area of the macroelectrode were formed under this type of diffusion.

AB - A new insight into the mechanism of lead electrodeposition from nitrate solutions is presented by analysis of the polarization characteristics and by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the surface morphology of the lead deposits obtained in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis. In dependence on the concentration of Pb(II) ions, the electrodeposition process is either mixed ohmic-diffusion or completely ohmic controlled. The ratio of the ohmic control to the total control of the electrodeposition process increased with increasing concentration of Pb(II) ions and at the higher concentrations of Pb(II) ions, the electrodeposition process became completely ohmic controlled. The polarization characteristics were well correlated with the morphologies of the obtained lead deposits. The formation of regular crystals was a characteristic of ohmic control of the electrodeposition process, while needle-like and fern-like dendrites were the predominant morphological forms obtained under diffusion control. The critical overpotentials for both dendritic growth initiation and instantaneous dendritic growth were analyzed and a mechanism of lead electrodeposition based on this analysis is presented. It was shown that the values of these critical overpotentials decreased and approached one another with increasing concentration of Pb(II) ions and finally became the same when full ohmic control was attained. The presented results were in good agreement with the predications of the general theory for the formation of disperse metal electrodeposits.

AB - Optimization of process of formation of open and porous copper electrodes, denoted as the honeycomb-like ones, by the regime of pulsating current (PC) is considered. The square-waves PC were consisted of the same amplitude current density and pause duration of 10 ms, while the analyzed deposition pulses were: 1, 4, 7, 10 and 20 ms. Morphologies of electrodeposited copper and the quantities of evolved hydrogen during electrodeposition processes were compared with the surface morphology and the quantity of evolved hydrogen obtained by copper electrodeposition in the galvanostatic mode. In galvanostatic mode, electrodeposition of copper was performed at a current density which corresponded to the amplitude current density in the PC regimes. Honeycomb-like deposits were formed at the constant current density and by the PC regimes with deposition pulses of 7, 10 and 20 ms. The mixture of holes constructing the honeycomb-like structure and dish-like holes was obtained with a deposition pulse of 4 ms. Finally, dish-like holes were only formed with a deposition pulse of 1 ms. The change of the shape of holes was discussed by the change of hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer caused by evolved hydrogen. The specific energy consumption in the PC regimes of electrolysis was also discussed. Analysis of the specific energy consumption showed that energy saving of about 15% can be attained in the production of honeycomb-like electrodes by the choice of the appropriate PC regime.

It was shown that the increase of the value of the j(0)/J(L) ratio produces a decrease of overpotential at fixed value of current density. At selected set of conditions, the j(0)/j(L) ratio cats be increased by the increase of roughness of electrode surface by electrodeposition of disperse deposits at low level of coarseness The increase of the value of the J(0)/J(L) ratio produces large saving of energy required for the evaluation of electrochemical reaction The conditions in which the electrochemical process cats become Ohmic controlled were also specified.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper by pulsating overpotential (PO) regime in the hydrogen co-deposition range was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by microscopic analysis of the morphology of the formed deposits. The techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy were used for the structural analysis of the copper deposits. Honeycomb-like electrodes were formed with an amplitude overpotential of 1000 mV, a pause of 10 ms, and deposition pulses of 3, 5, 10 and 20 ms. Holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles were surrounded by dendrites (for deposition pulses of 3 and 5 ms) or agglomerates of copper grains (for 10 and 20 ms). In an interval of deposition pulses between 3 and 10 ms, the length of deposition pulse did not affect the size, number and depth of holes. The change of morphology of copper formed around holes was discussed by the effect of quantity of evolved hydrogen on effectiveness of stirring of solution in the near-electrode layer. The application of square-wave PO with the shorter deposition pulses enabled energy savings in the production of such copper electrodes. For example, the applied deposition pulse of 3 ms enabled energy saving of about 15% in relation to the copper electrode obtained with a deposition pulse of 10 ms (for the unchanged number, size and depth of holes). AB - The formation of honeycomb-like structures in the pulsating overpotential (PO) regime was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The honeycomb-like structures obtained with a square-wave PO of different pause to pulse ratios were compared to the one obtained in the constant potentiostatic regime. Increasing the pause to pulse ratio led to a decrease of the diameter of the holes formed by attached hydrogen bubbles, as well as to an increase in the number of holes formed at the surface area of copper electrodes. The size of the agglomerates of copper grains, of which the walls of the holes were constructed, was reduced with increasing duration of the pause. Also, the uniformity of the honeycomb-like structures was increased by application of the PO regime. It was shown that the effects attained by application of this regime were comparable with those obtained by electrodeposition in a constant potential regime with the addition of specific additives.

AB - Formation of irregular deposits by electrodeposition from acid sulfate solutions of various H2SO4 concentrations was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the copper deposits morphology. Copper dendrites were the dominant morphological form obtained at overpotentials corresponding to the plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density. The number of the formed dendrites was increasing with the decreasing H2SO4 concentration. Holes formed due to the attached hydrogen bubbles were the basic morphological form of electrodeposited copper from all analyzed copper sulfate solutions at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density. The honeycomb-like structures (holes of the detached hydrogen bubbles with cauliflower-like agglomerates of copper grains between them) were formed if electrodepositions were performed from 0.15 M CuSO4 in both 0.250 M and 1.0 M H2SO4. On the other hand, aside from the holes and cauliflower-like forms, electrodeposition from 0.15 M CuSO4 in 0.125 M H2SO4 led to the formation of degenerated dendrites and dendritic particles inside channels formed of evolved hydrogen. Holes with shoulders of degenerated dendrites were also formed. The formation of different morphological forms under hydrogen co-deposition was discussed in the terms of hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer using the values for the break-off diameter of hydrogen bubbles.

Physical and mathematical models of an inert macroelectrode modified with active hemispherical microelectrodes

AB - The physical model of an inert electrode partially activated with hemispherical microelectrodes was formed by the deposition of silver grains on a graphite substrate. It is shown that the process on the microelectrodes can be under activation control despite the fact that the overall rate is determined by the diffusion layer of the macroelectrode. On the basis of this conclusion a mathematical model of mass transfer on an inert electrode partially covered with active hemispherical particles (microclectrodes) is given and verified qualitatively by appropriate experiments. It was found that the degree of activation does not depend on the size of the particles, but on the ratio of the radius of the particles to the interparticle distance. This means that the quantity of catalyst required for the transformation of an inert electrode into an active one decreases strongly with decreasing active particle size. It was also shown that the maximum current density to the activated inert electrode was equal to the limiting diffusion one to the massive active electrode, as well as that the activity of the modified inert electrode at the same coverage of catalyst strongly depends on the exchange current density of the electrochemical process taking place on it. The larger is the exchange current density, the lower is the quantity of catalyst required for the same effect on the activity of the modified electrode.

AB - In this paper, the phenomenology of a formation of a honeycomb-like structure was considered. Copper deposits obtained at overpotential of 1000 mV were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. It was shown that two groups of craters or holes were formed by the electrodeposition at this overpotential. The origin of one group is associated with hydrogen evolution and the attachment of hydrogen bubbles at the surface area of an electrode. For the origin of the other group, a current distribution at the growing surface was very important. The effect of preparing a working electrode onto the formation of a honeycomb-like structure is also considered.

AB - Copper electrodeposition from acid sulfate solutions at an overpotential of 1000 mV, which is about 250 mV outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density, was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the morphology of the formed copper deposits. Craters or holes formed due to the attachment hydrogen bubbles were the dominant morphological forms of copper deposits obtained at this overpotential. In dependence of the concentration of Cu (II) ions in the plating solution, the two types of holes or craters were formed. One type of holes is obtained by electrodeposition from a solution with a concentration of Cu (II) ions of 0.075 M CuSO4 in 0.50 M H2SO4, and a honeycomb-like structure was formed from these holes. The other types of holes are formed from a solution with a higher concentration of Cu (II) ions (0.60 M CuSO4 in 0.50 M H2SO4) and the formed holes were dish-like. A mixture of both types of holes was obtained by electrodeposition from 0.30 M CuSO4 in 0.50 M H2SO4. The obtained morphologies of copper deposits are discussed in terms of the effect of hydrogen evolution on the hydrodynamic conditions in the plating solution.

Increasing the temperature of the solution led to a shift of both the beginning and the end of the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density towards lower electrodeposition overpotentials. Also, higher temperatures led to the formation of morphological forms of copper deposits characteristic for electrodeposition of copper at some higher overpotentials. The unexpected trend in the development of copper structures electrodeposited at an overpotential of 800 mV is discussed in terms of the effect of temperature on the viscosity and surface tension of the electroplating solution.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper from acid sulfate solutions at overpotentials on the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density and at higher overpotentials was examined. The average current efficiencies for hydrogen evolution reaction are determined by a measurement of the quantity of evolved hydrogen and the overall electrodeposition current as a function of electrodeposition time, while morphologies of copper deposits are examined by the use of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. It is found that the open and porous structures of copper deposits (denoted and as honeycomb - like copper structures), suitable for electrodes in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells and chemical sensors, were reached by electrodeposition processes from solutions with the lower concentrations of Cu (II) ions (0.15 M CuSO 4 and less in 0.50 M H2SO4) at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density at which the quantity of evolved hydrogen was enough to change hydrodynamic conditions in the near - electrode layer. The main characteristics of these copper structures were craters or holes formed primarily due to the attachment hydrogen bubbles with agglomerates of copper grains between them.

AB - The effect of hydrogen codeposition on the morphology of copper electrodeposits was studied. The dependences of the overall current and the volume of evolved hydrogen on the quantity of electricity used were plotted and the average current efficiencies of the evolved hydrogen were derived from them. The morphologies of copper electrodeposits were correlated with the hydrogen evolution rates. It was shown that dendrites are the main characteristic of deposits obtained at overpotentials belonging to the limiting diffusion current density plateau, at which the hydrogen evolution rate is low. At larger overpotentials the dominant form become craters in the honeycomb-like electrodeposits due to the intensive hydrogen codeposition.

AB - In this paper the morphology (SEM analysis), the internal structure (cross-section analysis) and the growth mechanism of Ni and Co powders electrodeposited from ammoniacal electrolyte are investigated. It is shown that morphology and the internal structure of those powders are quite different. For Ni powder, all particles are of the same morphology, cauliflower-like type. In the case of Co powder, generally two types of particles are detected: (1) dendrite particles and (2) different types of agglomerates, compact, spongy-like and ball-like ones. The growth mechanism for all agglomerates is based on the fact that with the time of growth the disperse (dendrite) agglomerate is branching in different directions and at the tip of each branch spherical diffusion takes over the planar one, providing conditions for the growth of compact deposit. After some time, these branches form compact deposit all over the agglomerate surface and the same agglomerate further grows as a compact one, until it falls off from the electrode surface. Characteristic of all agglomerates is the presence of deep cavities on their surface and the fern-like dendrites on the bottom for most of these cavities.

AB - Morphologies of copper deposits obtained at overpotentials belonging to the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density and at higheroverpotentials were examined by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. Copper dendrites are formed at overpotentials belonging tothe plateau of the limiting diffusion current density. The shape of copper dendrites depends on the electrodeposition overpotential. At higheroverpotentials (800 and 1000 mV) and larger values of current densities, porous and very disperse copper deposits were obtained. Thesemorphologies were a consequence of a very vigorous hydrogen evolution at these electrodeposition overpotentials. Also, the obtained copperstructures consisted of agglomerates of copper grains. The size of copper grains is a function of the overpotential of electrodeposition, thusapproaching to nano-sized dimensions is achieved when the electrodeposition overpotential is increased.

AB - Electroplating could be defined as a group of procedures in which metal surfaces (sometime nonmetals) transforms, so the surface properties are changed from base materials to the deposited metal. This goal can be achieved only in the case when deposits are homogeneous and nonporous. Many factors determine the quality of the deposits, but exchange current density is one of the most important due to the influence on the formation of thin surface metal films.

AB - The structure of powder particles was analysed by considering their cross sections. It was shown that the structure of powder particles of nonsieved flowing powders is sufficiently dense to produce a continuous surface, which does not allow the particles to jam and hence permits the free flow of nonsieved powder. It was also shown that the representative powder particle, the elementary cell of which can be presented by a 3D-cross, describes the properties of the powder relative to its flowability well.

AB - The structure of the surface of copper powder particles is discussed and correlated with the lowest apparent density at which copper powder can still flow. It is shown that such structures can be easily obtained in the electrodeposition of powders in reversing current regimes.

AB - Reflection and structural analyses of different copper and zinc coatings were performed. The copper coatings were electrodeposited from a sulfate solution in the presence of thiourea, as well as in the presence of modified polyglycol ether, PEG 6000 and 3-mercaptopropanesulfonate.The zinc coating was electrodeposited from a sulfate solution in the presence of a dextrin/salicylaldehyde mixture. They were examined by STM and X-ray diffraction analysis, and measurements of the reflection of light from their surfaces were taken. The mean sizes of atomically flat parts of these surfaces were estimated by the STM software measurements, using options for the determination of the autocovariance function and the power spectral densityfunction. It was shown that the mean sizes of atomically flat parts of the copper coatings were several times greater than the mean size of atomically flat parts of the zinc coating. This difference probably leads to the difference in the maximum degrees of mirror reflection between copper and zinc coatings.
