Characterization of PM(2.5)sources in a Belgrade suburban area: a multi-scale receptor-oriented approach

AB  - Designated as the most harmful for health, PM(2.5)aerosol fraction was a subject of our study. It was collected for all four seasons during 2014/15 in the suburban area of Belgrade (Serbia) and analysed for Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, As, Ba and Pb elements and for NH4+, NO(3)(-)and SO(4)(2-)ions by particle-induced X-ray emission and ion chromatography techniques, respectively. Obtained concentrations have been treated by a combination of several receptor-oriented models to reveal source contributions to the suburban PM(2.5)at different spatial scales. Applied positive matrix factorization analysis indicated five main groups of emission sources: biomass burning (14.5%), traffic (3.9%), regional combustion/secondary sulphates (28.8%), local combustion/secondary nitrates (29.7%) and soil (5.4%). Local heating units had been pointed out as dominant contributors by long-range transport and ground-wind circulation analyses. Air masses circulating over the Balkan Peninsula denoted regional emissions as responsible for the high concentrations of secondary sulphates. Local and long-range transport analyses combined suggested that the BB and the LC/NO(3)originated from the wider urban area. Several Saharan dust episodes were detected as well. Presented results might be a basis for the development of air pollution mitigation strategies in the continental Balkan area, considered one of the most polluted and under-investigated European regions.

AB  - This paper presents the extraction of major and trace elements from a coal sample, in deionized water, by using three different extraction techniques. Rotary mixing and ultrasonic extraction were examined for different extraction times, while the microwave-assisted extraction was performed at different temperatures. Metal concentrations (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, As, Ni, Se, Sb and Pb) in solution were determined employing inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry; whereas the results obtained for Na, K, Ca and Mg were compared employing ion chromatography. Comparing the rotary-and ultrasonic-assisted extractions, it was shown that the former technique was more efficient for the determination of Fe, Na and Pb, whereas the latter one proved more efficient for the determination of Co and Cr ions. Microwave-assisted extraction was shown to be the most efficient method for all the tested elements in coal. In addition, sequential extraction of the elements was realized using microwave digestion. The results of the sequential extraction experiments indicated associations of investigated elements with a mineral phase and organic matrix. Sequential extraction provided information on possible leaching of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Fe and Mn under environmental conditions.

Experimental Design Optimization of the Determination of Total Halogens in Coal by Combustion-Ion Chromatography

AB  - Determination of total halogens in coal was investigated with oxygen bomb combustion followed by ion chromatography. Experimental parameters were optimized by fractional factorial design and response surface methodology. Fractional factorial design was employed in screening experiments to evaluate the influence of the oxygen pressure, catalyst, absorption solution, reduction reagent, bomb cooling time, and a combustion aid on the combustion of coal in an oxygen bomb. Response surface methodology was conducted to further refine the results obtained by fractional factorial design and to define parameters for the procedure. The accuracy and precision of combustion with ion chromatography were evaluated by the use of two certified reference materials and by fortified in-house coal standards. The limits of detection and quantification for total halogens were 0.84 and 2.80 milligrams per kilogram, respectively, for 500 milligram samples. Ion chromatography provided relative standard deviations less than 4 percent, recoveries exceeding 95 percent, and was convenient. This method is recommended for routine determination of total halogens in coal because of its reliability.

AB  - MOL-D database is a collection of cross-sections and rate coefficients for specific collisional processes and a web service within the Serbian Virtual Observatory (SerVO) and the Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Center (VAMDC). This database contains photo-dissociation cross-sections for the individual ro-vibrational states of the diatomic molecular ions and rate coefficients for the atom-Rydberg atom chemi-ionization and inverse electron-ion-atom chemi-recombination processes. At the moment it contains data for photodissociation cross-sections of hydrogen H and helium He molecular ions and the corresponding averaged thermal photodissociation cross-sections. The ro-vibrational energy states and the corresponding dipole matrix elements are provided as well. Hydrogen and helium molecular ion data are important for calculation of solar and stellar atmosphere models and for radiative transport, as well as for kinetics of other astrophysical and laboratory plasma (i.e. early Universe).

Application of gas chromatography analysis to quality control of residual organic solvents in clopidogrel bisulfate

AB  - A direct-injection, split-mode capillary gas chromatographic procedure with flame ionization detection was developed for the analysis of eight solvents used in the synthesis and purification of the anti-thrombotic drug clopidogrel bisulfate. The solvents analyzed were methanol, acetone, dichloromethane (DCM), 2-butanol, cyclohexane, toluene, acetic acid and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). In addition, because of dehydration of 2-butanol during the drying process, significant amounts of 2-butanol dehydration products (1-butene, cis- and trans-isomers of 2-butene, 2,2-oxybis[butane] and 1-(1- -methylpropoxy)butane) may be detected in clopidogrel bisulfate samples. The content of each of these volatile products can be evaluated using the same gaschromatographic method, with quantification based on the response factor established for the chromatographic peak of 2-butanol. Based on a large number of result sets, retrospectively, from many different batches analyzed, conclusions were made about process variations and reliability and a lack of consistency was identified in the quality of the active substance from a particular producer source. Multivariate analysis was used as the statistical technique to classify the samples. From the analyzed set of 11 solvents, 6 of them were preselected based upon their occurrence in the samples and both Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) were performed.
