AB - The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were determined in 43 soil samples collected from 0 to 10 cm and 10 to 50 cm depths of Niška Banja region, Serbia, using a low background gamma spectroscopy with 3″ × 3″ NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. The mean absorbed dose rate of 0–10 cm and 10–50 cm depth soil were 66.1 and 60.4 nGy/h, respectively which was close to UNSCEAR worldwide value. The radium equivalent and annual effective dose effect were lower than the permissible level. Therefore, there is no significant radiological risk from the soil to residents living in this region.

AB - Aromatic plants and laser beam wavelength in the red range of visible spectra (623.8 nm), most commonly used for treating plant species, were selected. As there is not much information in the references, it is necessary to set a scale with qualitative and partially quantitative evaluations of the results. Specimens of thyme seed (Thymus vulgaris) were selected as aromatic plants for studying the effect of low-power lasers on plant development, and continuous He-Ne laser, with irradiation times in the range of minutes.

AB - Small air ions have the ability to charge airborne particles, thereby increasing their accumulation on surfaces. Indoor air purification by applying ionization uses electrostatic particle deposition. Respiratory pathogens, including viruses and respiratory droplets carrying viruses or other pathogens, represent bioaerosols, whose particle size distributions contain increasingly larger proportion of fine and ultrafine particles, as the evaporation process proceeds. We have generated two model aerosols: the nebulized NaCl solution, resembling human saliva, and the cigarette smoke, having relatively low water content. We have conducted real life experiments of such surrogate aerosol particle deposition without ionization, using bipolar ionization, as well as using unipolar negative air ions. Particle number concentrations have been measured in the 10 nm–10 μm particle size range. The calculated deposition rates and aerosol particle half-life times were correlated with bioaerosol pathogens based on the core pathogen sizes. Bipolar ionizers emitting equal concentrations of positive and negative ions had low impact to the particle concentration decrease. Intense negative air ionization resulted in pronounced deposition rate increases, particularly in the particle size range of viruses including the SARS-CoV-2. The impact of negative air ionization was most pronounced in the same size range where the deposition rates without ionization were the lowest. Therefore, the results are very promising from the standpoint of air purification and bioaerosol pathogen removal, bearing in mind that the effect of ions will be most pronounced if the unipolar ion rich air stream is directed towards the breathing zone.

AB - The paper represents the results of testing the effect of neutron and gamma radiation of radioactive 60 Co on electrical filters. Neutron and gamma radiation was chosen because of its conductivity. The analysis of the standard structure of the electric filter found that neutron and gamma radiation can affect the value of the capacitance as the most important component of the filter. The presented results are a contribution to the wider research of the radiation resistance of elements for the coordination of insulation at the low-voltage level. The experiments were performed on commercial capacitors that are installed in electric filters. Measurements were made with professional equipment under well-controlled laboratory conditions. The combined measurement uncertainty of the experimental procedure was less than 5 %.

AB - A new air cooler design (“specific two-level crystallization incubator”) with a specific arrangement of laboratory vessels by levels and double-branch air conductors at the ends and a series of movable cold thresholds installed in a laboratory tube furnace is presented. The advantage of our design over existing ones is that the setups allow easy regulation of conditions and simultaneous crystallization of several substances at different crystallization rates in crucibles and Tamman test tubes. The apparatus enables the crystal growth from melt of some metals in the operating temperature range from 80 to 500°C.

AB - Multiferroic systems are attractive to the researches worldwide due to diversity of existing applications, as well as possible novel ones. In order to contribute to understanding of the processes that take place within the structure of such a system, we subjected it to mechanochemical activation and thermal treatment. Powdery mixtures of iron and barium titanate in a mass ratio of 30% Fe and 70% BaTiO3 were activated in a planetary ball mill for time duration of 30 to 300 min and subsequently sintered at 1200 degrees C in the atmosphere of air. During the activation the system undergoes structural phase transitions, whereby the content of iron and its oxides changes. The highest Fe content was observed in the sample activated for 270 min, with local maxima in crystallite size and microstrain values and a minimum in dislocation density. The complex dielectric permittivity changes in the applied radio frequency field, rangingfrom 176.9 pF/m in thesample activated for 90 min to 918.1 pF/m in the sample activated for 180 min. As the frequency of the field increases, an exponential decrease in the magnetic with a simultaneous increase in the electrical energy losses is noticeable. The system exhibits ferromagnetic resonance, whereby longer activation in the mill shifts the resonant frequency to higher values. Negative electrical resistance was observed in all analyzed samples. The activation time changes both the demagnetization temperature and the Curie temperature of the samples undergoing heating and cooling cycles in the external permanent magnetic field. Curie temperature is the highest in the sample activated for 240 min. Thermal treatment increases the initial magnetization of all samples, with the most pronounced increase of similar to 95% in the sample activated for 300 min.

AB - The possibility of substituting the usage of a radioactive a-source to improve the characteristics of the gas surge arrester is considered in this paper. The solution to this problem is sought in the engineering of the characteristics by applying different electrode materials and varying electrode surface topography. Materials that differ in the output work value were examined. The electrode surface topographies were either polished, or with engraved regular spikes, or with polished cavities. The paper is mostly experimental in nature. The experiments were performed under well-controlled laboratory conditions. The measurement uncertainty of the experimental procedure was satisfactory. Experimental results were processed by sophisticated statistical methods of low statistical unreliability. The obtained results show that it is possible to avoid the installation of a radioactive source in the gas surge arresters and how it should be done. In this way, a possible contamination of the natural environment with extremely dangerous alpha - radioactive sources would be avoided.

AB - This work aims is to design, fabricate and test a gas surge arrester with optimum characteristics based on testing the influence of all parameters that affect the characteristics of gas surge arresters for the coordination of low voltage isolation. After extensive research on the surge arrester model and reviewing all available literature, a three-electrode prototype surge arrester was made. The prototype gas used was a mixture of 0.8 He + 0.2 SF6 and the working point was set to the right of Pashen's minimum. Examination of thus constructed prototype and three commercial surge arresters of the same nominal voltage has shown that the surge arrester model was better in every respect. It should be noted that using the developed model, gas arresters with radioactive charging can be discarded, which is important for environmental reasons. The obtained results are very important in power engineering since the operation and control of the operation of power circuits, which are the source of overvoltage which are performed by electronic circuits.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate if it is possible to implicitly determine the homogeneity of the obtained electrospun fibers based on jet shape during electrospinning. Experiments were performed with 10 wt% PVA solution, and four variations in process parameters were investigated in order to examine their effect on fiber structure. Data obtained during experiments were used as input for computational simulation. The simulation results, both using commercial ANSYS and in-house software PAK, show good agreement with experiments in terms of outcome-no fiber differences in experiments were present when different voltage pairs were used, and similar jet shapes were obtained during simulations. Shapes of the electric field potential for all the used voltage pairs were very similar, due to the uniformity of the field, which is in agreement with the experiment, as no differences in fiber structure are observed in these cases. This confirms the hypothesis that based on jet shape during electrospinning, it is possible to implicitly determine the homogeneity of the obtained electrospun fibers. Differences that may occur between experiments and simulation can be a result of simplifications in simulations, influence of uniform and non-uniform electric field etc. This kind of two-phase simulation could be useful in reducing the trial-and-error approach and maintenance costs in electrospinning experiments.

AB - The paper deals with the analysis of the annual indoor radon concentrations variations due to different geological parameters of Sjenica community, Western Serbia. The measured Rn-222 concentrations were ranging from 10 to 1130 Bq/m(3). In 14% of the buildings, the radon action level of 300 Bq/m(3) is exceeded, indicating that Sjenica community could be characterized as a radon priority area. Each of 35 measuring location was georeferenced and corresponding lithostratigraphic units and geological period was assigned. Data were analyzed using the multiple linear regression (MLR) method and two predictive models were developed. The MLR model generated by the geological periods explained 17% of the radon variability while, the better one, was the lithostratigraphic MLR model, which explained 52% of the radon variability. Analysis has shown that lithostratigraphic units are important parameters in the prediction of radon levels.

AB - This work considers the manifestation of spontaneous breakdowns of Geiger-Mueller counters. This is an experimental type of work. The reasons leading to the spontaneous breakdowns of Geiger-Mueller counters have been analysed under controlled laboratory conditions. The experiments were carried out under the "constant voltage". The tested Geiger-Mueller chambers were commercial chambers of the radial electric field and homogenous electric field. The experimental-statistical methods were used in order to choose the chambers with identical features (with 0.1 % of statistical reliability). The results of experiments showed that the spontaneous breakdown of the Geiger-Mueller counter happens even in the conditions of shielding. They also showed that those breakdowns have cumulative features. The reason for that is a positive feedback between the spontaneous breakdowns. The explanation is confirmed and quantified by the working gas filtering experiments.

AB - Design of modular, simple to build and handle air cooler ('crystallization support tube') installed in a laboratory tube furnace is presented. The setup allows easy regulation and simultaneous crystallization tests of different temperature gradients, shapes of crystallization fronts and rate intervals in crucibles and Tamman test tubes, enabling fast studies of obtaining crystals. The relationship between the crystallization parameters has been derived and numerically analyzed. This method can also be applied in crucible or tube furnaces.

AB - The two-dimensional advection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients is solved by the explicit finite-difference method for the transport of solutes through a homogenous two-dimensional domain that is finite and porous. Retardation by adsorption, periodic seepage velocity, and a dispersion coefficient proportional to this velocity are permitted. The transport is from a pulse-type point source (that ceases after a period of activity). Included are the first-order decay and zero-order production parameters proportional to the seepage velocity, and periodic boundary conditions at the origin and at the end of the domain. Results agree well with analytical solutions that were reported in the literature for special cases. It is shown that the solute concentration profile is influenced strongly by periodic velocity fluctuations. Solutions for a variety of combinations of unsteadiness of the coefficients in the advection-diffusion equation are obtainable as particular cases of the one demonstrated here. This further attests to the effectiveness of the explicit finite difference method for solving two-dimensional advection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients in finite media, which is especially important when arbitrary initial and boundary conditions are required.

AB - The cooler allows easy regulation of simultaneous crystallization tests of different crystallization parameters and substances, with the purpose of obtaining crystals from a family of newly synthesized compounds with a layered crystal structure. The procedure involves first increasing the voltage until the substances are completely melted. Then, while a constant furnace voltage is maintained, a small amount of airflow is introduced into the cooler. As a result, crystallization starts on the surface of the melts for the lower row and at the bottom of the melts for the upper row. The crystallization rate interval in each Tamman test tube is regulated by the cross-section of the airflow. Different temperature gradients in the crucibles can be tested simultaneously using an inclined cooler. Tamman test tubes and plugs of various shapes and dimensions can be mounted and thus tested at the same time. Several coolers or a planar air cooler with several columns of plugs can be installed in a chamber furnace (crystallization board).

AB - Amorphous polymer-derived Si-C-N ceramics can be doped with different elements (Al, B etc.) through various pre-ceramic polymer routes. Thus, controlling of the high temperature oxidation resistance can be achieved on an atomic level. An important factor for silica layer growth is oxygen diffusion in protective thermally grown layers. In order to get insight of the oxygen diffusion mechanism, analysis should include both, bulk and short-circuit diffusion. XRD measurements of oxidized Si-C-N and SiC revealed the possibility that oxide layers were fully crystallized and are composed of nano-sized cristobalite-like grains. Secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profile analysis after (18)O(2)-(16)O(2) isotope exchange experiments on oxidized SiC indicated that short-circuit diffusion is probably grain boundary diffusion of molecular oxygen.

AB - Design of modular, and simple to build and handle air cooler ('crystallization comb') installed in a laboratory chamber furnace is presented. The setup allows easy regulation and simultaneous crystallization tests of different temperature gradients, shapes of crystallization fronts and rate intervals in crucible columns, enabling fast studies of obtaining crystals. The relationship between the crystallization parameters has been derived and numerically analyzed. This method can also be applied in crucible or tube furnaces. .
