AB - Mica and talc have wide areas of application as a raw material in a number of industrial branches. Mechanically activated mica has specific applications such as: capacitors, insulators, and pearlescent pigments. Talc is widely used as either a basic raw material or as filler. This paper presents a comparative analysis of mechanically activated samples of mica and talc in ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator "Retsch ZM-1". The following mechano-activator parameters were variable: number of rotor revolutions (rpm); sieve mesh size (mu m); current intensity (A). In addition, the following parameters were monitored: duration of mechanical activation, t (min); circumferential rotor speed, v (m/s); capacity of mechano-activator, Q (kg/h); and specific energy consumption, W-e (kW h/t). It was observed that effect of mechanical activation of mica and talc increased with an increase of the load and rotor revolution of ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator. Both mica and talc were successfully treated by mechanical activation procedure. In the processing of mica, mechanical activation is suggested to be applied as a post-treatment, and in the talc processing as a pre-treatment, as the high quality talc is obtained by means of hydrometallurgical concentration method.

AB - The efficiency of talc mechanical activation by means of two different mechano-activators centrifugal and attrition mill is investigated in this study and the comparative analysis of the characteristics of obtained talc powders is presented. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate with low Fe2O3 content is achieved through effect of mechanical activation of talc accompanied by hydrometallurgical process. The applied mechanical activation process conditions of ultra-centrifugal mill were defined by number of rotor revolutions, sieve mesh size, and current intensity. These operating parameters of the ultra-centrifugal mill were variable. Ultra fine grinding of talc in attrition mill (attritor) was carried out in various time intervals - from 5 to 15 min. The following technological parameters of the mechanical activation were monitored: time of mechanical activation, circumferential rotor speed, capacity of ultra-centrifugal mill, and specific energy consumption. The investigation was based on a kinetic model. The structure and behavior of activated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

AB - Research on the lead-free solders has attracted wide attention, mostly as the result of the implementation of the Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The Sn-Zn solder alloys have been considered to be one of the most attractive lead-free solders due to its ability to easily replace Sn-Pb eutectic alloy without increasing the soldering temperature. Furthermore, the mechanical properties are comparable or even superior to those of Sn-Pb solder. However, other problems still persist. The solution to overcoming these drawbacks is to add a small amount of alloying elements (Bi, Ag, Cr, Cu and Sb) to the Sn-Zn alloys. Microstructure, tensile strength, and hardness of the selected Sn-Zn-Bi ternary alloys have been investigated in this study. The SEM-EDS was used for the identification of co-existing phases in the samples. The specimens' microstructures are composed of three phases: Sn-rich solid solution as the matrix, Bi-phase and Zn-rich phase. The Bi precipitates are formed around the Sn-dendrit grains as well as around the Zn-rich phase. The amount of Bi segregation increases with the increase of Bi content. The Sn-Zn-Bi alloys exhibit the high tensile strength and hardness, but the values of these mechanical properties decrease with the increase of Bi content, as well as the reduction of Zn content. The results presented in this paper may offer further knowledge of the effects various parameters have on the properties of lead-free Sn-Zn-Bi solders.

AB - Investigations in this paper has been carried out in order to define the correlation between specific characteristics of coating glazes based on basalt, fired faience and appearance and the quality of the ceramic product surface. The paper presents the initial results of research on possibilities for utilisation of basalt from the locality " Vrelo" - Kopaonik Mountain (Serbia) for producing the opaque glaze. From frits with different basalt content (25%, 30%, 35%, and 60%) with addition of water and 5% of the kaolin " Zetlizer" the liquid glazes-suspensions were made (G-1/25, G-2/30, G-3/35, and G-4/60). The primary fired biscuit-shaped faience was used for applying the glazes by dipping, pouring and brushing methods. The further firing process of glazes took place in a laboratory tunnel furnace, under the following operating parameters: temperature T= 980 °C and retention time t= 3. h (hours). The initial investigation has shown that the basalt from the locality Vrelo is suitable for obtaining applicable glazes, bringing the attractive and decorative colours to the surfaces of the faience ceramics. The best results were achieved by adding the iron pigments.
