AB - In this work, the environmental distribution of steroid compounds and the level of sewage-derived contamination were assessed using sterol ratios in the confluence area of two major rivers in the Serbian capital, where raw sewage is discharged without any treatment. Special attention was paid to steroids partitioning between the dissolved and suspended phases of river and wastewater samples, since steroids tend to easily bind to particulate matter. The efficiency of sterol removal in two wastewater treatment plants in Serbia was also evaluated. Human/animal sterols coprostanol and cholesterol, and phytosterol β-sitosterol were the dominant compounds in all water samples. The sterol abundance pattern in river water was different from that in raw sewage, indicating a more pronounced biogenic input, as well as greater impact of wastewater discharges on the composition of the suspended phase. Severe contamination of the investigated area was determined, with the Danube being more contaminated than the Sava River due to different hydrodynamic conditions leading to significantly higher sterol levels in the suspended particulate matter. It was also shown that the greater part of human/animal sterols and phytosterols present in river water samples (83.0 ± 11.9 % and 87.1 ± 15.2 %) and wastewater samples (92.1 ± 6.8 % and 95.0 ± 5.7 %) was bound to suspended material compared to the dissolved phase, emphasizing the need to consider and analyze both water phases in the tracing of steroid-based environmental pollution in order to obtain a realistic picture of steroid contamination and their fate in the aquatic environment. A high removal rate (>98 %) of coprostanol and cholesterol during wastewater treatment was determined and only the coprostanol/(coprostanol + cholestanol) ratio was found to be sensitive enough to be affected by an improvement in the quality of treated wastewater.

AB - TiO2/carbon composites were synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization, using titanium isopropoxide and glucose precursor solution to obtain composites with Ti/C molar ratios ranging from 0.05 to 0.30. Characterization of obtained composites was performed by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The possibility of using TiO2/carbon composites as photocatalysts for UV assisted degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution and selected pharmaceuticals from multicomponent solution was examined. It was found that increase in the glucose concentration, i.e. increased carbon content, leads to the higher porosity and increase in the share of photocatalytically active anatase phase in obtained TiO2/carbon composites. Sample obtained from the most concentrated glucose solution (TiO2/HTC4), showed the superior photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation toward both methylene blue and selected pharmaceuticals. In addition, TiO2/HTC4 show high recycling ability with degradation ratio of methylene blue higher than 81% after five cycles. Also, TiO2/HTC4 is expected to be a promising candidate for photocatalytic processes using visible light.

AB - The Iron Gate I Reservoir is the largest impoundment on the Danube River. It retains gt 50% of the incoming total suspended solids load and the associated organic contaminants. In the sediment core of the Iron Gate I Reservoir we report the presence and fate of four classes of emerging contaminants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, steroids and perfluorinated compounds), predominantly not covered by the EU monitoring programs, but considered as future candidates. Based on contaminant's partitioning behavior in the water/sediment system and the suspected ecotoxicological potential asserted from the literature data, the risk of recorded concentrations for sediment-dwelling organisms was discussed. The high anticipated risk was associated with antibiotics sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin, and pesticides linuron and carbendazim (banned in the EU, but still approved for use in the investigated area) and malathion. This indicated the need for better control of release of these compounds into the river, and implied their inclusion in future regular monitoring. Higher concentrations of pharmaceuticals and most pesticides and sterols were recorded in the fragment of allochthonous coarser sediment, assumed to have entered the reservoir during a high discharge event. Only one perfluorinated compound was recorded in the upper part of the sediment core. The vertical concentration profiles of pesticides propazine and malathion indicated their uniform source, most likely atmospheric transport and deposition of particles deriving from agricultural land.

AB - In this paper, multivariate analysis of sterol concentrations detected in river sediment samples was performed. In order to remove co-dependence of values, concentrations of sterols were transformed using centered log-ratio (CLR) transformation. The main objective of the work was to point out the damaging effects of working in the wrong geometry on the principal component analysis (PCA) assessment of sterol pollution. In order to determine if the dimension lost have effect on the principal component analysis of sterols in sediments, we have performed the PCA using raw and log-ratio transformed sterol data. Additionally, two rounded zero replacement approaches, i.e. a simple-substitution method (DL/2, 0.55DL and DL/root 2) and multiplicative replacement strategy (0.65 DL), were compared in order to determine if the replacement values have an effect on PCA results and conclusions. Relevant differences were noted by comparing the results of the principal component analysis obtained with raw data and log-ratio transformed sterol data. Only the PC loadings obtained from the CLR PCA allowed the clear distinction between human-sourced pollution and biogenic sources of sterols, whereas in the case of PCA with raw data loadings were all grouped almost in a single quadrant. For the small proportion of rounded zeros (not more than 10%), two different replacement approaches did not have any effect on transformed PCA output. The results presented in this work have shown that the effect of "closure" in the sterol data can be easily observed from the PCA biplot, and that it obstructs the evaluation of human contribution to pollution of river sediments. Therefore, prior to the PCA, sterol concentrations must be CLR transformed in order to perform a reliable assessment of the sewage contamination.

abstract = "In this paper, multivariate analysis of sterol concentrations detected in river sediment samples was performed.

AB - Multifunctional drug anisomycin was subjected to forced degradation in accordance with International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines for the first time. The drug was exposed to the recommended stress conditions of hydrolysis (acidic, alkaline and neutral), oxidation, thennal stress and photolysis, in order to investigate its stability. Optimized LC-MS/MS method was validated as recommended by ICH Q2(R1) guideline with respect to the specificity, accuracy, precision, limits of detection and quantitation, linearity and robustness. Anisomycin exhibited high instability under alkaline and thermal (neutral hydrolysis) conditions. It showed moderate stability under acidic, neutral, oxidative, thermal (acidic hydrolysis) and photolytic conditions, with the lowest degradation level observed in the case of light and oxidation stress. Formation of the same degradation product, identified as deacetylanisomycin, was observed under all applied stress conditions.

AB - The purpose of this study was to analyze and evaluate the levels of essential elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Se) and proximate composition (moisture, protein, fat, and ash) of three pork cuts (loin, hind leg, and shoulder) from free-range Mangulica pigs from Serbia. Essential elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Shoulder contained the highest levels of essential elements (Mn, 0.192 mg kg−1; Fe, 19.550 mg kg−1; Cu, 1.490 mg kg−1; Zn, 44.470 mg kg−1; and Se, 0.130 mg kg−1). The shoulder and hind leg cut differed significantly from the loin in Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn levels. This study showed that Mangulica pork is a rich source of Fe and Zn, and these elements showed significant correlations for a range of tissue combinations. The highest levels of protein (21.15 g/100 g) and fat (10.60 g/100 g) were established in loin, and the highest moisture level occurred in shoulder (72.02 g/100 g). Statistically, significant differences were established only between loin and shoulder in protein and fat contents.

AB - In this paper, pristine and chemically treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were employed as solid-phase extraction sorbents for the isolation and enrichment of multi-class pharmaceuticals from the surface water and groundwater, prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Thirteen pharmaceuticals that belong to different therapeutical classes (erythromycin, azithromycin, sulfamethoxazole, diazepam, lorazepam, carbamazepine, metoprolol, bisoprolol, enalapril, cilazapril, simvastatin, clopidogrel, diclofenac) and two metabolites of metamizole (4-acetylaminoantipyrine and 4-formylaminoantipyrine) were selected for this study. The influence of chemical treatment on MWCNT surface characteristics and extraction efficiency was studied, and it was shown that HCl treatment of MWCNT leads to a decrease in the amount of surface oxygen groups and at the same time favorably affects the efficiency toward extraction of selected pharmaceuticals. After the optimization of the SPE procedure, the following conditions were chosen: 50 mg of HCl-treated MCWNT as a sorbent, 100 mL of water sample at pH 6, and 15 mL of the methanol-dichloromethane mixture (1:1, v/v) as eluent. Under optimal conditions, high recoveries (79-119%), as well as low detection (0.2 to 103 ng L-1) and quantitation (0.5-345 ng L-1) limits, were obtained. The optimized method was applied to the analysis of five surface water and two groundwater samples, and three pharmaceuticals were detected, the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine and two metabolites of antipyretic metamizole.

AB - Waste hemp (Cannabis sativa) fibers were used as sustainable and renewable raw materials for production of low-cost biocarbon sorbent for heavy metals removal. Carbon precursors of different chemical composition were obtained by oxidative and alkaline treatments of hemp fibers. Influence of lignocellulosic precursor chemical composition on hemp fibers-based biocarbon (HFB) characteristics was examined by BET surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy and mass titration. It was found that lignin content and polymorphic transformation of cellulose increase the SBET of microporous HFBs, while hemicelluloses induce more homogeneous distribution of adsorption active sites. Heavy metal ions adsorption onto HFBs is primarily influenced by the amount of surface oxygen groups, while specific surface area plays a secondary role. Equilibrium data obtained for lead ions adsorption were analyzed by different nonlinear adsorption isotherms, and the best fitting model was chosen using standard deviation and Akaike information criterion (AIC

vrste i količine površinskih grupa. U cilju postizanja maksimalnih prinosa ispitivanih ostataka

Takođe, usled velike rasprostranjenosti i postojanosti
uključene u redovne programe monitoringa zagađujućih materija i njihovo ponašanje i sudbina u
životnoj sredini, kao i ekotoksikološki efekti nisu u potpunosti poznati.
registraciji, evaluaciji, autorizaciji i restrikcijama hemikalija.
AB - Emerging contaminants cover a wide range of substances which can be potentially harmful to human health. Also, it was determined that these substances due to widespread occurrence and persistence in the environment cause a series of adverse environmental effects, mostly to aquatic organisms, even at low concentrations. These contaminants reach the environment from various anthropogenic pollution sources. Emerging contaminants are not included in routine monitoring pollutant programs and their behavior and fate in the environment, as well as ecotoxicological effects are not entirely known. Therefore, it is required to include them in existing regulations focused on the environmental quality.
In this paper, a detail analysis of regulations dealing with the aquatic environment pollution, which represent a base for sustainable water resource management, was performed. The EU legislation including Water Framework Directive, “watch list” of pollutants and REACH Directive, were reviewed. Additionally, Guidelines for water quality monitoring and protection of aquatic organisms by USA Environmental Protection Agency were analyzed, as well as ISO 14000, a series of environmental management standards and ISO 24510, 24511 and 24512 standards for activities relating to drinking water supply systems and wastewater sewage systems. Concept of emerging pollutants management in aquatic environment is also presented.

AB - The development and optimization of an analytical method for simultaneous extraction, determination and reliable confirmation of twenty steroids from different classes (human/animal and plant sterols, and natural and synthetic steroid hormones) in environmental water and wastewater at ng L-1 levels are described. Water samples were prepared using solid-phase extraction and extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography-linear ion trap-tandem mass spectrometry. Improved instrumental method was developed for complete chromatographic separation of analytes with identical fragmentation reactions, based on the Use of a single C8 column and acetonitrile as organic solvent in the mobile phase. The optimized method provided high recoveries (70-114%) for both water matrices with the RSDs generally lower than 20%. Low limits of detection were achieved for both surface water (0.7-15.0 ng L-1) and wastewater (1.7-15.0 ng L-1). Method displayed good linearity in the tested concentration ranges. As a result of method application to real water samples, cholesterol was detected in all fifteen analyzed river water samples (in the concentration range 176-5162 ng L-1) and all seven wastewater samples (1092-4808 ng L-1). Also, coprostanol, stigmasterol, campesterol, beta-sitosterol and sitostanol were found in the investigated samples. Steroid hormones were not detected in any of the analyzed water samples.

AB - The objectives of the research are to determine the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in surface water and groundwater in the Republic of Serbia and to identify significant effects of river-water purification through riverbank filtration, concerning oxic conditions and hydrogeological conditions of alluvial aquifers in Serbia. Between 2009 and 2015, a total of 19 studied pharmaceuticals and metabolites were analyzed in 184 samples, 10 were detected in surface water, and 8 in groundwater. Carbamazepine and metamizole metabolites N-acetyl-4-amino-antipyrine (4-AAA) and N-formyl-4-amino-antipyrine (4-FAA) have the highest frequency of occurrence in surface water (57.3–68.8 %) and in groundwater (19.5–43.9 %), respectively. Highest detected concentrations were for 4-AAA (520 ng/L) and 4-FAA (248 ng/L) in surface water as well as in groundwater (4-AAA 128 ng/L and 4-FAA 150 ng/L). Results showed that riverbank filtration sites with different hydrogeological and oxic conditions could significantly remove investigated pharmaceuticals. Percentage of removal during riverbank filtration was determined for carbamazepine (65.4 %), trimethoprim (100 %), 4-AAA (91.2 %), and 4-FAA (70 %) for all investigated locations. Based on the available data for three specific locations (Danube River alluvion, Sava River alluvion, and Velika Morava River alluvion), results showed that besides oxic conditions, residence time of groundwater in alluvial aquifer and ratio of infiltrated water from river to the well play very important role in the quality of groundwater. These results are extremely important for better understanding of self-purification potential of alluvial aquifers and protection from potential impacts of anthropogenic pollution to the groundwater sources in the Republic of Serbia.

AB - TiO2/carbon composite (TiO2/HTC), synthesized by hydrothermal
carbonization, was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen
adsorption–desorption isotherms and X-ray diffraction. The possibility of
using TiO2/HTC as photocatalysts for UV and visible light assisted
degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution was examined. It was
found that carbon presence in TiO2/HTC leads to the higher porosity and
increase in the share of photocatalytically active anatase phase. Compared to
the hydrothermally synthesized TiO2, TiO2/HTC showed the superior
photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation. In addition, TiO2/HTC show
high recycling ability with degradation ratio of methylene blue higher than
81 % after five cycles. Also, TiO2/HTC is expected to be a promising
candidate for photocatalytic processes using visible light.

abstract = "TiO2/carbon composite (TiO2/HTC), synthesized by hydrothermal
carbonization, was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen
adsorption–desorption isotherms and X-ray diffraction.
Also, TiO2/HTC is expected to be a promising
candidate for photocatalytic processes using visible light.",

AB - A selective, sensitive and fast method for extraction, identification and quantification of multifunctional drug anisomycin in various tissues and serum, based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, was developed, optimized and validated. The method was validated according to the FDA guidelines and generally demonstrated good selectivity, accuracy, precision, and stability of the analyte. In the optimized method, high extraction efficiency was achieved for tested tissues (heart, brain, spleen, kidney, liver and femoral muscle) and serum. The obtained values of lower limits of quantification (LLOQ, 1.0-11.0 ng g(-1)) and limits of detection (0.3-3.3 ng g(-1)) indicated that the method was suitable for determination of trace levels of anisomycin in the complex matrices. The method was linear (R-2 gt = 0.990) in the tested concentration range (LLOQ-2500 ng g-1). The developed method was successfully applied in the first study on in vivo pharmacokinetics and distribution of anisomycin in tissues and serum of Wistar albino rats following subcutaneous injection (150 mg kg(-1)). The peak concentration in most tissues was achieved within 3 h after injection. The highest anisomycin concentration was found in the brain and the lowest concentration was found in the serum.

AB - In the present work, the sorption ability of 17 pharmaceutical compounds, two metabolites, and 15 pesticides (34 target compounds in total) onto four different river sediments was investigated separately. Selected compounds present the most frequently prescribed pharmaceuticals in human and animal medicine and the most frequently used pesticides in agriculture. Their presence into the surface, ground, and waste waters was confirmed into the numerous papers in literature, as well as their presence into the river sediments (for some of them). However, investigations of their sorption onto the river sediments, as major natural protection from potential pollution of ground water by them is missing. Sorption in this study was investigated onto river sediments taken from rivers in the Republic of Serbia, where only less than 10 % of total generated waste water passes through mainly basic treatment processes. Experiments were based on batch equilibrium procedures and obtained solutions were analyzed by previously developed and validated sensitive high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analytical methods. All results were modeled by Freundlich isotherms. Obtained results have shown that Kf coefficient values are in correlation with organic carbon content. Kd sorption coefficient values were relatively low and ranged in wide ranges for almost all compounds and sediments. That implicates on the conclusion that capacities of the investigated sorbents are not large for those compounds.

AB - In this work, source pollution tracing of the sediments of the Danube River and its tributaries in Serbia was performed using sterol ratios. Improved liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method, which enabled complete chromatographic separation of four analytes with identical fragmentation reactions (epicoprostanol, coprostanol, epicholestanol and cholestanol), was applied for the determination of steroid compounds (hormones, human/animal and plant sterols). A widespread occurrence of sterols was identified in all analyzed samples, whereas the only detected hormones were mestranol and 17 alpha-estradiol. A human-sourced sewage marker coprostanol was detected at the highest concentration (up to 1939 ng g(-1)). The ratios between the key sterol biomarkers, as well as the percentage of coprostanol relative to the total sterol amount, were applied with the aim of selecting the most reliable for distinction between human-sourced pollution and the sterols originated from the natural sources in river sediments. The coprostanol/(cholesterol + cholestanol) and coprostanol/epicoprostanol ratios do not distinguish between human and natural sources of sterols in the river sediments in Serbia. The most reliable sterol ratios for the sewage pollution assessment of river sediments in the studied area were found to be coprostanol/(coprostanol + cholestanol), coprostanol/cholesterol and epicoprostanol/coprostanol. For the majority of sediments, human-derived pollution was determined. Two sediment samples were identified as influenced by a combination of human and natural biogenic sources.

AB - Concentrations of cadmium (Cd) were measured in leg muscle and liver of pheasants (n=316) from 23 different Serbian regions under the Serbian National Residue Monitoring Program during 2013-2015. Levels of Cd in pheasant tissues were determined by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Most of the pheasants examined had Cd in their tissues. In the third year of the residue monitoring program, the Cd concentrations detected in leg muscles were nearly double the levels detected in the first year. The highest Cd levels in muscles were measured in pheasants from Podunavlje, Macva and Zlatibor districts. All leg muscle samples had Cd concentrations below permitted maximum residue levels (MRL=0.05 m kg-1). However, fifteen liver samples had Cd levels that exceeded the permitted MRL (0.50 mg kg-1). The number of non-compliant pheasant liver samples increased over the years. The lowest mean Cd level in pheasant livers was measured in birds from Morava district (0.035 mg kg-1), while the highest was in birds from Branicevo district (0.574 mg kg-1). This monitoring program shows that the Cd levels measured in pheasants, which are suitable bioindicators of environmental pollution, indicate that environmental pollution with Cd is increasing.

AB - The new and simple approach for deposition of catalytically active TiO2 coating on carbon monolith (CM) carrier was presented. CM photocatalysts were impregnated with TiO2 using titanium solution and thermal treatment, and their photocatalytic activity was investigated in the process of methylene blue (MB) photodegradation. For the purpose of comparison, CM composite photocatalysts were prepared by dip-coating method, which implies binder usage. The presence of TiO2 on CM carrier was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The sorption characteristics of CM and the role of adsorption in the overall process of MB removal were evaluated through amount of surface oxygen groups obtained by temperature-programmed desorption and specific surface area determined by BET method. CM has shown good adsorption properties toward MB due to high amount of surface oxygen groups and relatively high specific surface area. It was concluded that photocatalytic activity increases with CM disc thickness due to increase of MB adsorption and amount of deposited TiO2. Good photocatalytic activity achieved for samples obtained by thermal treatment is the result of better accessibility of MB solution to the TiO2 particles induced by binder absence.

AB - The main objective of this work was to find optimal production parameters for the preparation of activated hemp fibers (ACh) with good adsorption properties toward pesticides. In order to examine the role of manufacturing parameters on ACh surface characteristics, activation process of carbonized hemp fibers was investigated by temperature programmed reaction and evolved gaseous products of activation were monitored by mass spectrometry. ACh samples were characterized by BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy and temperature-programmed desorption. KOH activation induces the reduction of oxygen groups existing on the carbonized hemp fiber surface and the formation of the more stable, predominantly anhydride groups, while porosity development correlates with both H-2 and CO, evolved during the activation, and increases with carbonization and activation temperature. Finally, the highest efficiency in pesticides removal was achieved by carbonization of waste hemp fibers and activation at 900 degrees C with KOH/carbonized material ratio of 2/1. High efficiency in pesticides removal indicates that activated hemp fibers could be successfully used as a sorbent in water purification.

abstract = "The main objective of this work was to find optimal production parameters for the preparation of activated hemp fibers (ACh) with good adsorption properties toward pesticides. High efficiency in pesticides removal indicates that activated hemp fibers could be successfully used as a sorbent in water purification.",

AB - Short and entangled hemp fibers, obtained as a waste from textile industry, were used as efficient biosorbent and low-cost precursor for carbon sorbent production. In order to obtain the biosorbents with better sorption properties, short hemp fibers were chemically modified. Also, chemical modification were used in order to attain the appropriate specific structure of hemp fibers based carbon precursor, that promote the formation of the required porosity and surface chemistry of the biocarbon to facilitate adsorption. Used hemp fibers based sorbents were characterized through the specific surface area, amount of surface functional groups and pH of the point of zero charge. Sorption efficiency of hemp fibers based sorbents were tested through the adsorption of cadmium from water solution. Adsorption data will be used for development of filters based on hemp fibers and carbonized hemp fibers forpurification of water polluted with heavy metals.

AB - By varying the parameters of carbonization and activation, different samples of hemp fibers based activated carbon were obtained. Optimal production conditions were selected based on the adsorption properties of activated hemp fibers toward pesticides. Therefore, the influence of production conditions on the specific surface area, measured by dynamic method, and adsorption characteristics of activated hemp fibers toward different pesticides (acetamiprid, dimethoate, carbofuran and atrazine) was examined. Decrease of pesticide concentration, as a consequence of the adsorption, was determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry technique. Based on obtained results, an efficient pesticides sorbent can be produced using: carbonization temperature of 1000 oC, activated agent/carbon material ratio of 2/1 and activation temperature of 900 oC. Additionally, activated hemp fibers impregnated with silver proved to be suitable for water disinfection due to the strong antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.
