AB - Cotton yarn was oxidized using the various concentrations and pH of potassium permanganate solutions, in order to investigate the influence of oxidation parameters on chemical, mechanical and sorption properties of cotton. The oxidation progress was monitored through weight loss, carbonyl and carboxyl group content, tensile strength, moisture sorption, crystallinity change, surface charge and morphology of modified samples. The carboxyl groups were introduced into the oxidized cotton up to 0.3 mmol center dot g(-1), while the weight loss was up to 5%. The oxidized samples, compared with untreated cotton, exhibited lower tensile strength, higher moisture sorption and surface roughness. Surface charge was evaluated through measurement of zeta potential at different pH of electrolyte, and the correlation was established between carboxyl group content and zeta values measured at neutral pH, which proved that zeta potential can be a valuable tool for characterizing changes in the structure of oxidized cellulose textile materials.

AB - Viscose yarn was submitted to oxidation using different sodium periodate concentrations for various periods of time in order to investigate the influence of oxidation on the chemical and sorption properties of the resulting yarns. The oxidation progress was monitored through periodate consumption, aldehyde group content and weight loss of the modified samples. The aldehyde groups were introduced into the oxidized viscose up to 1.284 mmol/g, while the weight loss was generally of about 5%. Compared to the untreated yarn, the oxidized samples exhibited lower water retention and iodine sorption values - of 32.4% and 53.6%, respectively, while moisture sorption values decreased for an oxidation time up to 180 min and increased when the time of oxidation was longer, up to 360 min. The changes in viscose yarn wettability, because of the oxidation treatment, were evaluated based on the parameters determined by the capillary rise method, which are related to the coefficient of diffusion and radius of pores.

AB - In this work cotton yarn was oxidized with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) under various pH and at different concentration at room temperature. Oxidation was performed for fiber cleaning and in order to introduce functional groups in a fiber, as well as to investigate the possibility to deposit manganese dioxide (MnO2) on the fibers surface during the oxidation. Namely, after the oxidation with potassium permanganate the usual procedure includes washing of samples with sodium metabisulfite in order to remove manganese dioxide from fibers surface which forms as a byproduct of oxidation. In this work, two sets of samples were made, wherein from one set of samples, MnO2 was removed, while in other set of samples deposited MnO2 was left on them. Samples were characterized from aspects of breaking strength, weight loss, functional groups content and the amount of deposited MnO2. Oxidized samples with removed MnO2 exhibited increased amount of functional groups which makes them suitable as a substrate for further modification, i.e. for binding active elements to fibers. On the other hand, samples with deposited MnO2 have shown the efficiency in decolorization of methylene blue solution, which makes these samples suitable for waste water purification.

AB - Oxidation of cellulose fibers is usual procedure for surface cleaning and introducing new functionalities in their structure. Due to the presence of three hydroxyl groups on each
glucopiranose unit, cellulose is very susceptible to oxidation. The most desirable and positive
effect of oxidation is introduction of acidic carboxyl groups in cellulose structure. Acidic
groups contribute to the surface charge of fibers and have influence on streaming potential of
fibers. In this work cellulose fibers (cotton and viscose) with different amounts of COOH
groups were prepared via oxidation with KMnO4, NaIO4 and NaClO2 under various treatment conditions. Carboxyl group content and zeta potential measurements were carried out in order to investigate influence of acidic groups’ quantity on surface charge of fibers.
Results could help to anticipate how processing technique such as oxidation would influence further textile fibers processing, since surface charge is directly related to the reactivity of cellulose to a different agents, e.g. dyes, finishing agents, drug compounds for wound treatment, etc.
