AB  - In this work, an influence of oxidation with potassium
permanganate (KMnO4) of different  concentration, on the structure,
sorption properties and surface charge of cotton yarn was  investigated.
Cotton oxidation was performed at const pH for 1 hour. After the
oxidation,
samples were washed, dried and characterized from the aspect of change in
morphology,  sorption properties, COOH group content and surface charge.
The results have shown that  oxidation with the most concentrated solution
of KMnO4 led to significant increase of COOH group content in the sample
(around 6 times), which thus led to increment of moisture sorption as well
as reduction of zeta potential in basic range. These results confirmed
that KMnO4 could be successfully used for cotton oxidation with aim to
improve
sorption properties.

AB  - Jedna od najaktuelnijih tema u svetu je ekologija i zagađenje
životne sredine. Ispuštanje toksičnih materija iz raznih industrijskih
pogona u neposrednu okolinu dovodi do zagađenja vode, vazduha i zemljišta.
U pogonima gde se proizvodni proces vrši uz mokru obradu veliki problem
predstavljaju otpadne vode. Jedan od primera je proces bojenja u
tekstilnoj industriji (gde postoji problem uklanjanja ostataka boja kao
organskog zagađivača iz vode). Postoje različiti fizičko hemijski i
biološki postupci za prečišćavanje otpadnih voda. U tekstilnoj industriji
se, pored otpadnih voda, generišu još dve vrste otpada a to su gasovi i
čvrsti otpad. Najčešće korišćen postupak za prečišćavanje je adsorpcija.
AB  - The current topic in the world is ecology, that is, preventing
or at least reducing environmental pollution. The release of toxic
substances from various industrial plants into the immediate environment
causes pollution of water, air and soil. In plants where the production
process is carried out with wet treatment, wastewater is a major problem.
One example is the dyeing process in the textile industry (where there is
a problem of removing dye residues as an organic pollutant from water).
There are various physicochemical and biological processes for
wastewater treatment. In the textile industry, in addition to wastewater,
two more types of waste are generated, namely gases and solid waste. The
most commonly used treatment method is adsorption.

AB  - U ovom radu pamučna pređa je oksidisana kalijum-pemanganatom (KMnO4) pri različitim pH vrednostima i različitim koncentracijama na sobnoj temperaturi. Oksidacija je vršena u cilju čišćenja pamučnih vlakana i uvođenja funkcionalnih grupa u vlakno, kao i ispitivanja mogućnosti deponovanja mangan-dioksida (MnO2) na površinu vlakana tokom oksidacije. Naime, nakon oksidacije kalijum-permanganatom uobičajena procedura je da se uzorci ispiraju natrijum-metabislufitom u cilju uklanjanja zaostalog mangan-dioksida sa površine vlakana koji se javlja kao sporedni produkt oksidacije. U radu su napravljena dva seta uzoraka, pri čemu je nakon završetka oksidacije kod jednog seta uzoraka uklonjen MnO2, a kod drugog seta je ostavljen deponovan MnO2 na uzorcima. Uzorci su okarakterisani sa aspekta prekidne jačine, gubitka mase, sadržaja funckionalnih grupa i količine deponovanog MnO2. Oksidisani uzorci sa uklonjenim MnO2 su pokazali povećanje sadržaja karboksilnih grupa što ih čini veoma pogodnim kao supstrat za dalje modifikovanje, odnosno vezivanje aktivnih elemenata za vlakna. Sa druge strane, uzorci sa deponovanim MnO2 su pokazali efikasnost prilikom obezbojavanja boje metilensko plavo iz vodenih rastvora što ove uzorke čini pogodnim za prečišćavanje otpadnih voda.
AB  - In this work cotton yarn was oxidized with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) under various pH and at different concentration at room temperature. Oxidation was performed for fiber cleaning and in order to introduce functional groups in a fiber, as well as to investigate the possibility to deposit manganese dioxide (MnO2) on the fibers surface during the oxidation. Namely, after the oxidation with potassium permanganate the usual procedure includes washing of samples with sodium metabisulfite in order to remove manganese dioxide from fibers surface which forms as a byproduct of oxidation. In this work, two sets of samples were made, wherein from one set of samples, MnO2 was removed, while in other set of samples deposited MnO2 was left on them. Samples were characterized from aspects of breaking strength, weight loss, functional groups content and the amount of deposited MnO2. Oxidized samples with removed MnO2 exhibited increased amount of functional groups which makes them suitable as a substrate for further modification, i.e. for binding active elements to fibers. On the other hand, samples with deposited MnO2 have shown the efficiency in decolorization of methylene blue solution, which makes these samples suitable for waste water purification.

AB  - The impact of nonselective cellulose oxidation (cotton fibre) by potassium permanganate in acidic environment, with or without additional treatment by sodium metabisulfite, on change of sorption (silver ions sorption), and deposition of manganese (IV) oxide were aims of this work. The standard methods and methods developed at Department of Textile Engineering of Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy Belgrade, were used for determination of introduced functional groups, sorption and mechanical properties of selected fibres. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry ICP-OES was used for determination of manganese(IV) oxide deposited on cotton fibres. The changes of studied properties of cotton fibres were followed as a function of concentration and pH of the solution of oxidizing agent. Results obtained in this work showed that oxidized cotton fibre with improved sorption properties is appropriate as an initial raw for a wide range of textile products of special assignment.
AB  - Cilj ovog rada je proučavanje uticaja neselektivne oksidacije celuloze (pamučna pređa) kalijumpermanganatom u kiseloj sredini, na promenu sorpcionih svojstava (joni srebra) i sadržaj deponovanog mangan(IV)-oksida. Tokom eksperimenta korišćene su standardne metode i metode razvijene na Katedri za tekstilno inženjerstvo Tehnološko-metalurškog fakulteta u Beogradu. Za određivanje sadržaja mangan(IV) oksida deponovanog na pamučnoj pređi je korišćena optička emisiona spektrometrija sa induktivno spregnutom plazmom (ICP-OES). Promene ispitivanih svojstava pamučnih pređa su ispraćene u funkciji koncentracije i pH rastvora oksidacionog sredstva. Rezulati dobijeni u ovom radu su pokazali da je oksidovana pamučna pređa pogodna polazna sirovina za dobijanje širokog spektra tekstilnih proizvoda specijalne namene. effect of oxidation is introduction of acidic carboxyl groups in cellulose structure. Acidic 
groups contribute to the surface charge of fibers and have influence on streaming potential of 
fibers. In this work cellulose fibers (cotton and viscose) with different amounts of COOH 
groups were prepared via oxidation with KMnO4, NaIO4 and NaClO2 under various treatment conditions. Carboxyl group content and zeta potential measurements were carried out in order to investigate influence of acidic groups’ quantity on surface charge of fibers. 
Results could help to anticipate how processing technique such as oxidation would influence further textile fibers processing, since surface charge is directly related to the reactivity of cellulose to a different agents, e.g. dyes, finishing agents, drug compounds for wound treatment, etc.
