AB - The influence of hot-dip galvanized steel (HDG) surface pretreatment with phosphate coatings on the corrosion stability and adhesion characteristics of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on HDG steel was investigated. Phosphate coatings were deposited on hot-dip galvanized steel from baths with different concentrations of NaF (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 g dm(-3)) and at different temperatures (50, 65 and 80 degrees C). The influence of fluoride ion concentration in the phosphating bath, as well as the deposition temperature of the bath, on the adhesion characteristics and corrosion stability of epoxy coatings on phosphated HDG steel was investigated. The dry and wet adhesions were measured by a direct pull-off standardized procedure, as well as indirectly by NMP test, while corrosion stability was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was shown that under dry testing conditions all the samples exhibited very good adhesion. However, the different trends of adhesion loss of different protective systems during exposure to corrosive agent (3% NaCl solution) were observed. The lowest adhesion values were obtained for epoxy coating on hot-dip galvanized steel, while the phosphate pretreatments significantly increase the adhesion of epoxy coatings. The highest values of adhesion strength were obtained for epoxy coating on HDG steel modified by phosphate coating deposited at 65 degrees C with 0.5 g dm(-3) NaF in the phosphating bath. EIS measurements in 3% NaCl solution are in accordance with adhesion measurements, i.e. greater values of charge-transfer resistance and smaller values of double-layer capacitance were obtained, as compared to other protective systems.

AB - One of the most important factors in corrosion prevention by protective coatings is the loss of coating adhesion under environmental influence. In this work, the adhesion of epoxy cataphoretic coatings was examined on steel and steel modified by Zn-Fe and Zn-Co alloys. The dry and wet adhesions of epoxy primers were measured by the direct pull-off standardized procedure, as well as indirectly by the NMP test. The corrosion stability of the coated samples was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was shown that under dry testing conditions all the samples exhibited very good adhesion. However, different trends of adhesion loss of different protective systems during exposure to a corrosive agent (3 % NaCl solution) were observed. The lowest adhesion values were obtained for epoxy coating on the steel substrate. The change in adhesion of the epoxy coating on steel modified by Zn-Co alloy during immersion in 3 % NaCl solution for 24 days was the smallest of all the investigated samples. Electrochemical impedance measurements in 3 % NaCl solution confirmed the good protective properties of this protective system, i.e., greater values of pore resistance were obtained.

AB - The adhesion and electrochemical properties of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on hot-dip galvanized steel with and without passive films were investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl. The passive films were formed in hot air, in boiling water and by chromating. Adhesion was measured both by a standardized pull-off method and by swelling in N-methyl pyrrolidone. Pretreatment of hot-dip galvanized steel with passive film formed in hot air increases both dry and wet adhesion strength of the epoxy coating compared to pretreatment with passive film formed in boiling water and chromate coating. The overall increase of wet adhesion for this sample was maintained throughout the whole investigated time period. It was shown that the change in adhesion of epoxy coating on a chromate coating is smallest of all investigated samples, although the initial value of adhesion on this surface had the lowest value. The corrosion stability of coated Zn samples pretreated by different methods, was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and in the initial time of exposure to NaCl the highest values of pore resistance were also obtained for the epoxy coating on Zn pretreated in hot air, whereas the epoxy coating on a HDG steel with a chromate coating showed the smallest change in electrochemical properties (pore resistance, coating capacitance, charge-transfer resistance) during prolonged exposure time.

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (anodized, phosphatized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium) have been investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl solution. From the results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), gravimetric liquid sorption experiment and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) it can be concluded that electrochemical and transport properties of epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium are significantly improved with respect to the same epoxy coatings on aluminium and phosphatized aluminium: higher values of pore resistance and charge-transfer resistance and lower values of coating capacitance and double-layer capacitance, from EIS; smaller values of diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating, from sorption measurements and smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coating, from TGA. On the other hand, the somewhat lower thermal stability of these coatings was obtained.

AB - Epoxy coatings were formed by cathodic electrodeposition of an epoxy resin on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (phosphatized, chromatized-phosphatized and anodized aluminium) using a constant voltage method (resin concentration 10 wt.%, temperature 27 degrees C, applied voltage 250 V). The corrosion behavior of these coatings was investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization measurements. From the dependence of resistance, capacitance and relative permittivity of the coating, obtained from EIS, on the rate of hydrogen evolution reaction in the electrodeposition bath, obtained from polarization curves, it can be observed that the epoxy coating on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces is a good barrier against the transport of corrosive agents. The time corresponding to contact between electrolyte and aluminium surface under the coating is greater in the case of surface modification by chromato-phosphatized and anodized aluminium than in the case of phosphatize one.

abstract = "Epoxy coatings were formed by cathodic electrodeposition of an epoxy resin on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (phosphatized, chromatized-phosphatized and anodized aluminium) using a constant voltage method (resin concentration 10 wt.%, temperature 27 degrees C, applied voltage 250 V). The time corresponding to contact between electrolyte and aluminium surface under the coating is greater in the case of surface modification by chromato-phosphatized and anodized aluminium than in the case of phosphatize one.",

AB - Zn–Fe alloy electrochemically deposited on steel under various deposition conditions were investigated using anodic linear sweep voltammetry (ALSV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for phase structure determination, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis for determination of chemical composition and polarization measurements and open circuit potential measurements for determination of corrosion properties. The influence of deposition current density on the chemical composition, phase structure and corrosion stability of Zn–Fe alloys was studied. It was shown that deposition current density strongly affects the corrosion stability of Zn–Fe alloys, while Zn–Fe alloy electrodeposited at 4Adm-2 exhibited the lowest corrosion rate.

AB - Adsorption and corrosion inhibitive properties of three different organic molecules: 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, 2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid and 2-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid are investigated on Armco-iron electrode cathodically polarized, in 0.5 mol dm -3 H 2 SO 4 solution. The examinations show that the three organic molecules behave as a cathodic corrosion inhibitors. The inhibitive efficiency, changes with the number of functional groups substituted on benzene ring and increases with concentration. The experimentally obtained adsorption isoterms follow the Frumkin equation [0/n(1-0) n ] exp(-2aθ) = Bc and the best fit is obtained for n = 2 (for 2-NSA) and n = 3 (for 2,7-NDSA and 2N-3,6-DSA). The calculated values for the parameter a are 2.1-2.9 and Gibbs energies are 17-21 kJ mol -1 . The adsorption rate constants are very small, proving that iron surface permanently changes due to the corrosion processes.

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (anodized phosphatized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium) have been investigated in 3% NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) gravimetric liquid sorption experiment and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Higher values of pore resistance and charge-transfer resistance and lower values of coating capacitance and double layer capacitance were observed for epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized and phosphatized aluminium. Smaller values of diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating from sorption measurements and smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coatings from TGA were obtained for coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium. On the other hand the somewhat lower thermal stability of these coatings was obtained.

Better protective properties of the epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum with respect to the same epoxy coatings on aluminum and phosphatized aluminum were obtained: higher values of Rp and Rct and smaller values of Cc and Cd, from EIS, and a smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coating, from TGA. On the other hand, a somewhat lower thermal stability of these coatings was obtained (smaller values of the ipdt temperature). This behavior can be explained by the less porous structure of epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum, caused by a lower rate of H2 evolution and better wet ability.

AB - The corrosion behavior and thermal stability of epoxy coating electrodeposited on aluminium have been investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), gravimetric liquid sorption experiments, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and polarization measurements were used. From the results obtained from EIS (pore resistance, coating capacitance, relative permittivity of coating, charge-transfer resistance, double-layer capacitance), gravimetric liquid sorption experiments (diffusion coefficient, energy of activation of water diffusion) and TGA (water content inside the coating and thermal stability), it can be concluded that the electrochemical, transport and thermal properties of an epoxy coating on aluminium are significantly improved with respect to the same epoxy coating on other substrates (steel, phosphatized steel, steel modified by Zn-Ni alloy). The better protective properties can be explained by less porous structure of the coating on aluminium, caused by lower rate of H-2 evolution, while the prolonged corrosion protection is due to the passive, mainly barrier film of Al2O3 on its surface.

AB - O-2 reduction on duplex stainless steel was investigated in neutral and alkaline solutions with and without the presence of chloride ions. All polarization curves showed hysteresis with higher reaction rate in positive going sweep than in the negative one. Tafel slopes of about -90 mV dec(-1) in neutral and alkaline solutions without chloride ions and about -150 mV dec(-1) in NaCl solution were obtained. Reaction rate is almost independent on pH in solutions of pH lt 12 while in more alkaline solutions reaction order with respect to OH- ions of about -1 was obtained. Reaction rate and kinetic parameters for O-2 reduction on duplex stainless steel were compared to data for O-2 reduction on pure Fe and great similarity was found.

AB - Organic protective coatings on steel were formed by cathodic electrodeposition of an epoxy resin modified by an amine and isocyanate using a constant voltage method (resin concentration 10% wt, temperature 26 degrees C, applied voltage 250 V). The corrosion behaviour of these coatings was investigated during exposure to different corrosive agents (H2O, 3% NaCl, 3% Na2SO4, 3% sodium salt of 2-naphthol-3,6 disulphonic acid) using a.c. impedance measurements, gravimetric liquid sorption experiments and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), with the aim of explaining the mechanism of coating degradation. The time required to saturate the coating with pure water, obtained from the sorption data, coincides with the initial increase in coating capacitance and initial decrease in pore resistance, obtained from a.c. impedance measurements, denoting the entry of electrolyte into the coating. The first step of electrolyte penetration through the coating is related to water uptake, when molecules of pure water diffuse in the micropores of polymer net according to Fick's law and it is independent of type and dimensions of ions in the electrolyte. Similar values of enthalpy of vaporization of different volatile electrolytes and the quantity of water inside the coating, obtained from DSC measurements were in agreement with the proposed mechanism. From the calculated diffusion coefficient for coatings where external layers were mechanically removed, it can be concluded that the micropores of the polymer net are homogeneously distributed throughout the coating.

AB - The temperature dependence of the kinetics of O2 reduction was studied on passivated Fe in NaOH solutions having a concentration ranging from 0.010 to 1.0 mol dm-3 and in the temperature range from 2 to 42 °C. The apparent enthalpy of activation was determined and was found to be pH dependent. The Tafel slpe increased with temperature in the range -69 to -92 mV dec-1. The enthalpic and entropic components of the transfer coefficient were calculated and these values were also pH dependent. As a consequence of the pH dependence of the apparent enthalpy of activation and of the transfer coefficient components, the reaction order with respect to OH- could not be determined precisely. Its value depends on the potential and temperature and was estimated to be about -0.8. Such complex temperature and pH behavior of O2 reduction on passive Fe was attributed to the pH, temperature and potential dependence of the passive film properties.

AB - Cataphoretic deposition of an epoxy primer was carried out on four different substrates: bare steel; phosphated steel; bare zinc-plated steel; and phosphated zinc-plated steel. Film growth was followed by observing the deposition current and local temperature throughout the deposition. The protective properties of the cured films at two different thicknesses formed on different substrates were observed by a.c. impedance measurements following exposure to 3% NaCl solution. It appears that the substrate affects the properties of the first-deposited layers of the coating. Models which explain the different properties of films formed on different substrates are given.

AB - A.C. impedance measurements carried out on epoxy-resin elcctrocoated steels were used to determine the pore resistance of the organic film as a function of time of exposure to 3% sodium chloride solution. The thermogravimctric analysis of coatings after various exposure times enabled determination of the quantity of electrolyte inside the pores, while gravimetric liquid sorption experiments were used to evaluate water uptake inside the coating. The results were interpreted in terms of a model in which water rapidly penetrates macrocapillaries (macropores) present as defects in the external portion of the coating and extra fine capillaries formed by the polymer net, followed by water and ions penetration through the macropores. The number, dimensions and shape of the pores through the film, estimated by optical microscopy, additionally confirmed the proposed model of electrolyte penetration. It was shown that conduction through the coating depends only on conduction through the macropores, although the quantity of electrolyte inside the macropores is only one tenth of that inside the polymer net.

AB - The kinetics of oxygen reduction were studied on passivated iron in borate buffered and unbuffered solutions of pH ranging from 7.4 to 13.8. A rotating disk electrode was employed. The O2 reduction on iron under these conditions was found to occur on the oxidized surfaces. The reaction orders with respect to O2 and OH- are 1 and -1, respectively, in solutions of pH > 11 and 1 and 0 in solutions of pH < 11. The OH- reaction order was explained as being due to the acid-base properties of the passive film. The Tafel slope value is about -85mV. In solutions of pH < 11 there are two Tafel regions, whereas at higher pH values Tafelian behavior is observed only in the high current density region. Two reaction mechanisms are proposed having the same rate determining step which is the adsorption of O2 molecules on Fe(II)ox surface sites which act as the active centers.

AB - The influence of the degree of deformation of low-carbon steel (0.48% Mn, 0.47% Si, 0.085% C) caused by mono-axial stretching was investigated with respect to the kinetics of electrochemical hydrogen evolution and the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide on the electrode surface. In 0.5 M H2SO4 deformation of the metal decreased the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction rate by half compared to the annealed sample. In weakly alkaline borate buffer (pH 9.8) neither the oxygen nor hydrogen peroxide reduction rates were influenced by deformation, while in chloride solutions the effect was similar to that for hydrogen evolution. This indicates that the reduction of both oxygen and peroxide take place at the passive film-solution interface which is not influenced by bulk metal deformations, while for reactions occurring at the metal-solution interface changes of structure, induced by deformation, inhibit the cathodic processes to a small degree.

This indicates that the reduction of both oxygen and peroxide take place at the passive film-solution interface which is not influenced by bulk metal deformations, while for reactions occurring at the metal-solution interface changes of structure, induced by deformation, inhibit the cathodic processes to a small degree.",

AB - The kinetics of hydrogen peroxide oxidation were studied on passive iron in alkaline solutions of pH ranging from 9.8 to 13.8, using the rotating disk electrode. Measurements were taken using the linear sweep technique. The kinetic parameters of H2O2 oxidation were determined: the Tafel slope is 110 mV dec-1 and the reaction order with respect to H2O2 is 0.5 and with respect to the OH- ion 0.7. It is assumed that the rate determining step is the transfer of the first electron to the HO-2 ion adsorbed under Temkin conditions. The pH dependence of the reaction rate is attributed to the pH dependent properties of the passive iron surface. There are no indications for the semiconducting behaviour of the passive film. The rate of H2O2 chemical decomposition was estimated. It was found that the passive film on iron was a poor catalyst for H2O2 chemical decomposition.

AB - The kinetics of hydrogen peroxide reduction were studied on iron in borate buffered and unbuffered solutions of pH ranging from 8.6 to 13.8, with and without the presence of chloride ions. A rotating disk electrode was employed. Measurements were taken using the linear sweep technique and the potential step steady-state technique. The H2O2 reduction on iron under these conditions was found to occur on the oxidized surfaces. The E-j polarization curves showed a significant hysteresis which is due to oxide film formation. On less oxidized and/or prereduced surfaces the H2O2 reduction was found to be faster than on more oxidized and/or prepassive surfaces. The reaction order with respect to H2O2 was found to be one. The rate determining step most likely involves the transfer of the first electron to the molecular H2O2. The ionic peroxide form HO-2 was not observed to be an electroactive species. The H2O2 reduction was found to be pH dependent at pH > 11. The observed pH dependence mostly reflects the acid-base equilibrium properties of H2O2 and partially those of the passive iron oxide film. Chloride ions were found not to have any influence on the reaction kinetics.

AB - O2 and H2O2 reduction was studied on Puratronic iron (99.995%) in borate buffer solutions of various pH ranging from 7.4 to 9.8. In solutions of pH < 9.3 the E-j curves are of quite irregular shapes and the limiting current is not established. Yet, in the potential region of the passivation-depassivation peak, a decrease in O2 and H2O2 reduction currents over time was observed. The influence of the passivation parameters (potential, time, speed, atmosphere and presence of H2O2 in the solution) on the degree of the inhibition of O2 and H2O2 reductions was examined. The loss of the electrocatalytic activity of the iron electrode is suggested to be due to the reaction between H2O2 and Fe(II) ions during the iron dissolution process occurring under the passivation-depassivation peak. The product of this reaction is an unconductive film which blocks the active electrode surface.

AB - A.C. impedance measurements carried out on epoxy-resin electrocoated steels have been used to determine the pore resistance, capacitance and relative permittivity of the organic films. The time dependence of these characteristics for the electrodeposited coatings, formed at different resin concentrations in the electrodeposition bath and at different bath temperatures, shows the effect of resin concentration and bath temperature on the protective properties of organic coatings deposited on steel. An increase in the concentration of the resin in the electrodeposition bath increases the pore resistance and decreases the electrical capacitance and relative permittivity of the organic films. Similarly, an increase in the bath temperature above 25 °C increases the pore resistance and decreases the electrical capacitance and relative permittivity. These changes reflect the increases in film thickness obtained at higher resin concentrations or at the higher bath temperatures.

AB - The kinetics of oxygen reduction were studied on iron in borate and bicarbonate buffered solutions, pH 9.8, using the rotating disk-ring method. Under these conditions O2 reduction occurs both on the oxidized surface and on the oxide-free one, depending on potential. On the oxidized surface the series mechanism was found to be operative. On the oxide-free surface the four-electron reduction was observed, but, due to the very small rate of H2O2 formation with respect to the total reduction current, a reliable distinction between the parallel and series mechanism could not be made. All the rate constants of the O2 and H2O2 reactions on the Fe surface were determined. No catalytic decomposition of H2O2 was found. The kinetics of the O2 reduction reaction is slower on more oxidized surfaces.
