AB - In this paper, the main subject concerns comparing different techniques to prepare raw clay samples for energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). Three kinds of sample preparation procedures are examined, such as loose powder, pressed pellet, and fired pressed pellet. The fired pressed pellet approach was observed as a part of universal sample preparation for physic, mechanical, and instrumental analysis, which has not been previously tested as a solution in chemical analysis by the EDXRF method. The observed sample preparation techniques were compared by calculating the parameters of validation (recoveries, limit of detection - LOD, limit of quantification - LOQ, precision, and expanded uncertainties of measurements) of 11 elements (Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Ti, P, Mn, and S) using 15 certified reference materials (CRMs). Calibration curves were created and evaluated using 30 reference materials (RM) for all three approaches. Results proved that the fired pressed pellet is the most practical and precise approach for sample preparation of raw clays.

AB - The chemical compositions of refractory materials, such as high-alumina concrete, bricks, and putty, were analyzed using an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDXRF). An improved methodology for investigating the effect of particle size on the outcomes of EDXRF chemical analysis is presented. Eight independent refractory samples (refractory concrete, brick, and putty) were pulverized utilizing seven milling times (30, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 s) and compared to non-pulverized samples. Thus, sixty-four refractory samples were obtained and analyzed using EDXRF. The method for measuring the fundamental EDXRF characteristics was then tested with ten certified reference materials. The acquired data were compared using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Univariate and multivariate statistics are used to evaluate EDXRF data. The particle size of the tested samples affected the z-scores of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, and P2O5 concentration measurements. Grinding times for refractory concrete, brick, and putty samples were determined in order to validate the robustness of the EDXRF technique and provide reliable chemical analyses. The ideal milling times for the samples studied ranged from 180 to 360 s, depending on the type of refractory material.

AB - The surface sediments sampled from forty sampling sites in the Boka Kotorska Bay, starting from
October 2005 to December 2019, were analysed for the content of ten heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr,
Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe). Five complex indices (pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological
risk index (RI), mean ERM quotient (MERMQ), toxic risk index (TRI), contamination severity
index (CSI)) were determined for each site in the study period (2005, 2007, 2013, 2019), and
statistically examined by principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). In the
semi-enclosed Bay, which consists of four smaller bays (Kotor, Risan, Tivat, Herceg Novi bays), a
spatio-temporal comparison of sediment quality was carried out using PCA and CA analysis of the
considered pollution indices. Statistical results revealed that the increased environmental risk in
2005 was observed in the bay of Kotor; in 2007 was in the bay of Tivat and Risan; in 2013 in the
bay of Kotor and Tivat; and in 2019 was in the bay of Tivat, particularly at the shipyard site Bijela.
The PCA and CA analysis highlighted that the sediment contamination in Kotor bay decreased from
2005 to 2019, while at the same time increased in Tivat bay, which is an indication of pollution due
to urbanization and population growth in this part of the Bay. The results gave a statistical overview
of the similarities between the pollution indices and the differences in the degree of sediment
pollution in the Bay during the last two decades.

AB - The aim of this study was to test montmorillonite and hydromica type of brick clays by using simultaneous thermal analysis and dilatometry in an assessment of the suitability of brick clays to produce building elements. The plasticity coefficient and drying susceptibility were determined to discover the behavior of brick clays. Fired products' characteristics were studied by performing water absorption and compressive strength tests. All the methods were employed in the construction of the firing curves in a tunnel kiln. The results could increase the degree of certainty to lead the production process towards obtaining the desired features of brick elements.

AB - The structure of new cis-dichloro[(E)-ethyl-2-(2-((8-hydroxyquinolin-2-il)methylene)hidrazinyl)acetate-kappa(2) N]-palladium(II) complex was determined using a combination of XRD and IR measurements and DFT calculations. Inherent flexibility of its structure is evident from the complexity of its IR spectrum, which could only be theoretically reproduced as a combination of several closely related structures, involving rotation around C-O bond and changes in hydrogen interactions of its -OH group. Its thermal stability and decomposition were studied non-isothermally, and the thermal decomposition mechanism was proposed using correlation with DFT calculations at the molecular level. It was determined that the initial degradation step consists of the release of Cl free radical, which then reacts with both the initial compound and the degradation products. Besides the endothermic steps, there are exothermic ones, contributing to the complex shape of the DSC curve, consisted of overlapping endothermic and exothermic peaks. Deconvolution of DTG curve allowed identification of primary fragments of the initial degradation process and, in conjunction with DFT calculations, construction of the most likely reaction mechanism.

AB - Thermal degradation of ternary transition metal complex containing tetraanion of pyromellitic acid, pyr, and ethylenediamine, en, [Ni-2(en)(2)(H2O)(6)(pyr)]center dot 4H(2)O, 1, was investigated under non-isothermal conditions. The mechanism of thermal degradation, which occurs in three steps, was clarified by TG/DSC measurements in conjunction with FT-IR spectroscopy and XRPD analysis. The complexity of all degradation steps has been revealed using isoconversional methods. Dehydration comprises the loss of ten water molecules in a relatively narrow temperature interval, resulting in a very complicated reaction mechanism. In addition, density functional theory calculations have been applied for better understanding of dehydration. The second degradation step, related to loss of en, was separated into two single-step processes with Fraser-Suzuki function. The obtained individual steps were described by Johnson-Mehl-Avrami A2 model and estak-Berggren model, respectively. Validation of the proposed kinetic triplets for individual steps was performed using master plot and P,rez-Maqueda criteria. The third degradation step is related to the fragmentation of pyr ion most likely followed with the release of a number of gaseous products.

abstract = "Thermal degradation of ternary transition metal complex containing tetraanion of pyromellitic acid, pyr, and ethylenediamine, en, [Ni-2(en)(2)(H2O)(6)(pyr)]center dot 4H(2)O, 1, was investigated under non-isothermal conditions. The third degradation step is related to the fragmentation of pyr ion most likely followed with the release of a number of gaseous products.",
