AB - This paper presents the extraction of major and trace elements from a coal sample, in deionized water, by using three different extraction techniques. Rotary mixing and ultrasonic extraction were examined for different extraction times, while the microwave-assisted extraction was performed at different temperatures. Metal concentrations (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, As, Ni, Se, Sb and Pb) in solution were determined employing inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry; whereas the results obtained for Na, K, Ca and Mg were compared employing ion chromatography. Comparing the rotary-and ultrasonic-assisted extractions, it was shown that the former technique was more efficient for the determination of Fe, Na and Pb, whereas the latter one proved more efficient for the determination of Co and Cr ions. Microwave-assisted extraction was shown to be the most efficient method for all the tested elements in coal. In addition, sequential extraction of the elements was realized using microwave digestion. The results of the sequential extraction experiments indicated associations of investigated elements with a mineral phase and organic matrix. Sequential extraction provided information on possible leaching of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Fe and Mn under environmental conditions.

AB - In this study, removal of arsenic ions using two industrial by-products as adsorbents is represented. Removal of As(III) and As(V) from water was carried out with industrial by-products: residual from the groundwater treatment process, iron-manganese oxide coated sand (IMOCS), and blast furnace slag from steel production (BFS), both inexpensive and locally available. In addition, the BFS was modified in order to minimise its deteriorating impact on the initial water quality. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were carried out using batch and fixed-bed column adsorption techniques under the conditions that are likely to occur in real water treatment systems. To evaluate the application for real groundwater treatment, the capacities of the selected materials were further compared to those exhibited by commercial sorbents, which were examined under the same experimental conditions. IMOCS was found to be a good and inexpensive sorbent for arsenic, while BFS and modified slag showed the highest affinity towards arsenic. All examined waste materials exhibited better sorption performances for As(V). The maximum sorption capacity in the batch reactor was obtained for blast furnace slag, 4040 mu gAs(V)/g.

AB - In this study, the performance and the efficiency of physico-chemical effluent treatment in a paper mill was investigated, with the aim of evaluating the treatment rationality and running stability. The effluent treatment plant (ETP) uses alum as a coagulant and polyacrylamide as a flocculant in multi-stage water purification. Inadequate efficiency and some operational problems were observed and their occurrences were investigated. Several simple measures inside the mill and some technical measures can prevent or postpone expensive end-of-pipe treatment investments, such as biological treatment. Chemically enhanced primary treatment under optimal operating conditions can be a stand-alone technique for achieving high quality effluent. Furthermore, reductions in wastewater generation in combination with fiber and filler recovery provide environmental benefits as well as significant economic savings in production. The advantages of the cleaner production approach in existing treatment units compared to expensive biological end-of-pipe technologies are obvious. This study demonstrated that the examined mill could easily and cost-effectively change its water system toward strict discharge limits by continuing to use the existing treatment units. AB - High density polyethylene (HDPE) has been modified by Ag+ ion implantation with the energy of 60 keV. The total amount of implanted silver ions was 1, 5 and 12 x 10(15) ions/cm(2). The surface topography was observed by atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM), while the surface composition changes were detected using phase imaging AFM. Surface topography changes were studied in detail using 3D surface parameters analyses. The average roughness decreased for the implanted HDPE indicating the flattening of the surface. Phase AFM images indicated the homogenization of the polyethylene during ion implantation, while histogram analyses confirmed the change in surface composition.

AB - A simple method for the separation and determination of inorganic arsenic (iAs) species in natural and drinking water was developed. Procedures for sample preparation, separation of As(III) and As(V) species and preconcentration of the total iAs on fixed bed columns were defined. Two resins, a strong base anion exchange (SBAE) resin and a hybrid (HY) resin were utilized. The inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry method was applied as the analytical method for the determination of the arsenic concentration in water. The governing factors for the ion exchange/sorption of arsenic on resins in a batch and a fixed bed flow system were analyzed and compared. Acidity of the water, which plays an important role in the control of the ionic or molecular forms of arsenic species, was beneficial for the separation; by adjusting the pH values to less than 8.00, the SBAE resin separated As(V) from As(III) in water by retaining As(V) and allowing As(III) to pass through. The sorption activity of the hydrated iron oxide particles integrated into the HY resin was beneficial for bonding of all iAs species over a wide range of pH values from 5.00 to 11.00. The resin capacities were calculated according to the breakthrough points in a fixed bed flow system. At pH 7.50, the SBAE resin bound more than 370 mu g g(-1) of As(V) while the HY resin bound more than 4150 mu g g(-1) of As(III) and more than 3500 mu g g(-1) of As(V). The high capacities and selectivity of the resins were considered as advantageous for the development and application of two procedures, one for the separation and determination of As(III) (with SBAE) and the other for the preconcentration and determination of the total arsenic (with HY resin). Methods were established through basic analytical procedures (with external standards, certified reference materials and the standard addition method) and by the parallel analysis of some samples using the atomic absorption spectrometry-hydride generation technique. The analytical properties of both procedures were similar: the limit of detection was 0.24 mu g L-1, the limit of quantification was 0.80 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviations for samples with a content of arsenic from 10.00 to 300.0 mu g L-1 ranged from 1.1 to 5.8%. The interference effects of anions commonly found in water and some organic species which can be present in water were found to be negligible. Verification with certified reference materials proved that the experimental concentrations found for model solutions and real samples were in agreement with the certified values.

AB - The sorption of inorganic arsenic species (arsenite and arsenate) from aqueous solutions onto steel-mill waste and waste filter sand, under neutral conditions, was investigated in this study. Additionally, the steel-mill waste material was modified in order to minimize its deteriorating impact on the initial water quality and to meet the drinking water standards. The influence of contact time and initial arsenic concentration was investigated using batch system techniques. To evaluate the application for real groundwater treatment, the capacities of the obtained waste materials were further compared to those exhibited by commercial sorbents, which were examined under the same experimental conditions. Kinetic studies revealed that waste slag materials are the most efficient in arsenic removal, reaching equilibrium arsenic sorption capacities in the range 47.6-55.2 mu g/g, while waste filter sand exhibited capacities of 25.4-29.8 mu g/g (for an initial arsenic concentration C-o=0.5 mg/L). The higher iron content in the slag materials was considered to be responsible for the better removal efficiencies, and the specific arsenic removal efficiency was estimated to be 220 mu gAs/gFe. The specific arsenic removal efficiency of the second active substance found in waste filter sand, manganese, was estimated to be 115 mu gAs/gMn. Equilibrium studies revealed the occurrence of both chemisorption and physical sorption processes. All the waste materials exhibited higher performances for As (V). The highest maximum sorption capacity was obtained by waste iron slag: 4040 mu g/g for As (V). The waste materials reached the arsenic removal capacities of the examined commercial materials, suggesting the feasibility of their application in real groundwater treatment.

AB - A suppressed ion chromatography (IC) method for the determination of inorganic anions in process water from paperboard production was developed and validated. Common inorganic anions (Cl(-), NO(3)(-), PO(4)(3-) and SO(4)(2-)) were detected in fresh and process water samples collected from a paperboard production system at 16 characteristic points. It was shown that the use of an IonPac (R)-AS14 column under isocratic conditions with Na(2)CO(3)/NaHCO(3) as the eluent and a suppression device proved to be a reliable analytical solution for the separation of the inorganic anions present in papermaking waters. This IC method is quite satisfactory concerning selectivity and sensitivity, and enables the determination of several inorganic anions over a wide concentration range. According to the obtained results, the total amount of analyzed inorganic anions was below 0.1 g/L, i.e., below the critical value which may trigger operational problems in paper production.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the sorption properties of recycled wool based non-woven material for heavy metal ions. To improve sorption properties wool material was treated with air low-temperature plasma (LTP) and/or biopolymer chitosan (CHT). The rate and extent of uptake of various metal cations (Pb+2, Cu+2, Zn+2) by wool, kinetics of adsorption, as well as the influence of concentration, pH and temperature on the sorption process were determined. It was found that wool even as a recycled material efficiently binds metal cations in all investigated cases. Recycled non-woven wool material is good sorbent for Pb+2 ions and it seems that it does not need any modification to improve this property. The modification of the material with LTP and/or CHT does not pass over 5 % of metal uptake improvement. Sorption properties for Cu+2 Ions improve about 10 % with LTP+CHT modification of the sorbent material, but metal salt solution still contains considerable amount of residual metal in solution (>30 %) even alter 24 hours of adsorption. The improvement in Zn+2 ions sorption is the most obvious with sorbent material modification as the LTP+CHT modified wool adsorbs 84 % more Zn+2 Ions than unmodified sorbent after 24 hours. The percentage of Zn+2 ions remaining in the solution is still considerable, but it improves from 72 % to 48 %. The further improvement in lead and copper sorption properties could be obtained by increasing pH and temperature of metal salt solution. The results indicate that the investigated non-woven recycled wool based sorbent material is potentially useful low-cost substrate for removing heavy metals from industrial effluents and other water sources.

AB - In this paper the feasibility of applying liquid membrane pertraction to the copper
recovery from aqueous effluents has been examined. A continuos laboratory-scale
hollow fiber-in-fiber type membrane pertractor was constructed to solve a variety
of problems encountered in the conventional solvent extraction equipment.
Copper-ions present in the feed solution were transferred through an organic
liquid containing 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxim in kerosene and
concentrated in an acid solution on the strip side. The operational factors such as
flow rates of the three liquid streams were considered. The overall mass transfer
rate is greatly influenced by the resistances in the aqueous film boundary layer on
the feed side, and by the rate of interfacial reaction taking place at organic-strip
interface.

AB - In the present work, the recovery of indium from sulfate media using a continuos-type membrane
pertractor with hollow fiber geometry was investigated as a study of the feasibility of the industrial
application of this pertraction technique. Separation and enrichment of indium with di-(2-
ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene in hollow fiber-in-fiber membrane pertractor were carried
out simultaneously. A series of experiments on the pertraction of indium was performed to
investigated the effect of various experimental conditions on the permeation rate. The mechanism
of indium pertraction through three-phase membrane system can be explained by diffusion model
accompanied by two interfacial reactions.
