AB - The influence of various intensities of ultrasound applied for the electrolyte stirring on morphological and mechanical characteristics of electrolytically produced copper coatings has been investigated. The copper coatings produced by the galvanostatic regime of the electrodeposition from the basic sulphate electrolyte and the electrolyte with added levelling/brightening additives at the low temperature were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques (surface morphology and topography, respectively) and by Vickers microindentation (hardness). The roughness of coatings increased with the increasing intensity of ultrasound, indicating that morphology of the coatings worsened with the enhanced application of ultrasonic waves. This is attributed to the strong effect of ultrasound on hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer, which is manifested by the increase of share of the activation control in the mixed activation-diffusion control of electrodeposition with increasing the intensity of ultrasound. The concept of "effective overpotential" originally proposed to explain a change of surface morphology in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is also applicable for a change of morphology of Cu coatings under the imposed effect of ultrasonic waves. Hardness analysis of the coatings showed that an intensity of applied ultrasound did not have any significant effect on the hardness, especially for the Cu coatings produced from the basic sulphate electrolyte.

AB - In this study, a novel procedure, based on application of the Chicot––Lesage (C–L) composite hardness model, was proposed for the determination of an absolute hardness of electrolytically produced copper coatings. The Cu coatings were electrodeposited on the Si(111) substrate by the pulsating current (PC) regime with a variation of the following parameters: the pause duration, the current density amplitude and the coating thickness. The topography of produced coatings was characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), while a hardness of the coatings was examined by Vickers microindentation test. Applying the C–L model, the critical relative indentation depth (RID)c of 0.14 was determined, which is independent of all examined parameters of the PC regime. This RID value separated the area in which the composite hardness of the Cu coating corresponded to its absolute hardness (RID < 0.14) from the area in which the application of the C–L model was necessary for a determination of the absolute coating hardness (RID ≥ 0.14). The obtained value was in a good agreement with the value already published in the literature.

AB - The morphologies of copper dendritic forms obtained in both potentiostatic and galvanostatic regimes of electrolysis with various amounts of the electricity were analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. Irrespective of amount of passed electricity, 3D (three dimensional) pine-like dendrites with sharp tips were formed in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis. On the other hand, the amount of passed electricity had a strong effect on the shape of the 3D pine-like dendrites formed in the galvanostatic regime of electrolysis. Dendrites with sharp tips were formed with smaller amount of passed electricity, while dendrites with globular tips were formed with larger amounts. The change in the shape of the galvanostatically synthesized 3D pine-like dendrites was explained by comparison with copper deposits obtained potentiostatically at overpotentials that corresponded to the final overpotentials during galvanostatic regime of electrolysis for the analyzed amounts of electricity. Based on the similarity of the obtained morphologies at the macro level, it was concluded that the overpotential plays a crucial role in the formation of the electrolytically synthesized dendrites and that the controlled conditions of electrolysis could represent a suitable way for a synthesis of spherical Cu particles by electrolysis.

AB - Electrodeposition and electroless deposition of metallic powders were comparatively investigated. Electrodeposition of copper is accompanied with the simultaneous hydrogen evolution, which significantly influences the morphology of Cu powder. At lower overpotentials, branched dendrites were produced. At higher overpotentials honeycomb-like deposits of copper were obtained. Formation of silver powders was characterized by the comparison of the exchange and limiting current densities. Instantaneous growth of dendrites starts at low overpotential due to large exchange current density in silver nitrate solution. Formation of powders such as Ni, Co, Ag, Pd and Au from homogenous solutions using an appropriate reducing agent or via galvanic displacement reaction was demonstrated. The hydrolysis of metallic ions is crucial in the deposition metallic powders via electroless deposition from homogenous solutions. Oxides, such as Ag 2O, Cu 2O and CuO, suspended in water can successfully be reduced with an appropriate reducing agent, leading to the precipitation of metallic powders.

AB - The conditions under which ohmic controlled metal electrodeposition occurs are discussed using a simple mathematical model. it is shown that ohmic controlled electrodeposition can be operative if the value of the exchange current density for the electrodeposition process is more than 10 times larger than the corresponding value of the limiting diffusion current density. In this case, a linear dependence of the current density on overpotential up to the value of the limiting diffusion current density can be observed. On the other hand, the initiation of dendrite growth under these circumstances is possible, even at very low values of overpotential, at the moment when the limiting diffusion current density is attained in potentiostatic electrodeposition. In this way, instead of a limiting diffusion current density plateau. an inflection point on the polarization curve can be observed, since dendritic growth is followed by an increase in the deposition current density. At the same time. it is shown that the ensemble of tips of dendrites can behave as an ensemble of microelectrodes working independently under mixed or activation control due to the absence of a common diffusion layer. This was confirmed by deposition of copper on a copper dendritic electrode and by silver electrodeposition from a silver nitrate solution onto a graphite substrate.

AB - The relative concentration of hydrogen ion (H(+)) as a function of sulfuric acid (H(2)SO(4)) concentration (calculated using Pitzer's model) and the electrochemical processes by which irregular copper deposits are formed were correlated. Irregular deposits are formed by potentiostatic electrodeposition at a high overpotential where the hydrogen evolution reaction occurs parallel to copper electrodeposition. Two sets of acid sulfate solutions were analyzed. In one set of experiments, the concentration of CuSO(4) was constant while the concentration of H(2)SO(4) was varied. The other set of experiments was performed with a constant concentration of H(2)SO(4) and different concentrations of CuSO(4). Then, the volumes of the evolved hydrogen (calculated as the average current efficiencies of hydrogen evolution) and the morphologies of copper deposits, characterized by the SEM technique, obtained for the same ratio of CuSO(4)/H(2)SO(4) were mutually compared and discussed in terms of the relative concentrations of hydrogen ions (H(+)) as a function of the H(2)SO(4) concentration. Good agreement between the ionic equilibrium in the CuSO(4)-H(2)SO(4)-H(2)O system and the results of the electrochemical processes was obtained. In this way, it was shown how this ionic equilibrium can be applied to predict and analyze the solution composition in electrolytic copper deposition processes.

AB - The effect of temperature on the electrodeposition of copper at overpotentials belonging to the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density and higher was examined by the determination of the average current efficiency of hydrogen evolution and by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the morphology of the formed copper deposits. Increasing the temperature of the solution led to a shift of both the beginning and the end of the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density towards lower electrodeposition overpotentials. Also, higher temperatures led to the formation of morphological forms of copper deposits characteristic for electrodeposition of copper at some higher overpotentials. The unexpected trend in the development of copper structures electrodeposited at an overpotential of 800 mV is discussed in terms of the effect of temperature on the viscosity and surface tension of the electroplating solution.

AB - Electrodeposition of copper from acid sulfate solutions at overpotentials on the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density and at higher overpotentials was examined. The average current efficiencies for hydrogen evolution reaction are determined by a measurement of the quantity of evolved hydrogen and the overall electrodeposition current as a function of electrodeposition time, while morphologies of copper deposits are examined by the use of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. It is found that the open and porous structures of copper deposits (denoted and as honeycomb - like copper structures), suitable for electrodes in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells and chemical sensors, were reached by electrodeposition processes from solutions with the lower concentrations of Cu (II) ions (0.15 M CuSO 4 and less in 0.50 M H2SO4) at overpotentials outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density at which the quantity of evolved hydrogen was enough to change hydrodynamic conditions in the near - electrode layer. The main characteristics of these copper structures were craters or holes formed primarily due to the attachment hydrogen bubbles with agglomerates of copper grains between them.

AB - Electrochemical treatment (EchT) of tumours, which is also known as electrochemical therapy, implies that tumour tissue is treated with a direct current through the use of electrodes. This was shown earlier when the major electrochemical reactions at the anode were chlorine and oxygen evolution and the impact of chlorine in EchT was investigated by mathematical modelling. In this work the electrochemical illustration of a mathematical model of electrochemical treatment of tumours is presented using a Pt electrode placed in agar-agar gel containing 1% phenolphthalein and NaCl. The appearance of the bright red color around the Pt wire due to the pH change caused by hydrogen evolution is used for the simulation of the shape and the boundaries of the tumour tissue. After the polarity was changed, oxygen evolution takes place on the Pt wire electrode and the red color disappears simulating the destructive influence of the electrochemical process on tumour tissue. A better understanding of the mathematical model presented earlier is achieved and it can be used for educational purposes in oncological praxis because agar-agar is the closest approximation to the ground substance of connective human tissue and successfully simulates the processes which occur in vivo. There is also some quantitative agreement between the results calculated earlier and those obtained in this work. The previous model was based on tissue, which was treated as an aqueous solution of sodium chloride containing bicarbonate and proteins and the results presented a detailed and useful quantitative analysis of the system. In this work, the quantitative analysis presented is based on an agar-agar system and the experimental conditions give the possibility of more detailed qualitative analysis. The combination of these two models offers a better simulation of the processes in vivo.

AB - The current efficiency during the cathodic period of reversing current in copper powder deposition was determined by measuring the quantity of hydrogen evolved. The diagrams from which the instantaneous and average current efficiencies for copper deposition can be extracted for any deposition time up to 30 min are given. A procedure for the calculation of the overall current efficiency is proposed.

AB - Electrochemically deposited copper powders, which are formed of particles of different size and morphology, are characterized by some properties like specific surface and apparent density. Aprocedure of the determination of a representative powder particle, exhibiting the same values of specific surface and apparent density as the powder is proposed. The proposed procedure also permints an explanation of the branching of copper dendrites.
