AB - Polyaniline (PANI), due to its highly reversible electrochemistry with superior energy storage and delivery characteristics, is considered as an electrode material in batteries, capacitors, and hybrid systems. We used a facile electrochemical synthesis for the formation of the PANI electrode using galvanostatic polymerization of aniline on the graphite electrode at the current density of 2.0 mA cm−2 from the aqueous electrolyte containing 0.25 mol dm−3 aniline and 1.0 mol dm−3 H2SO4. Electrochemical and electrical characterization suggested excellent energy storage features of the PANI electrode in a three-electrode system with specific energy up to 53 Wh kg−1 and specific power up to 7600 W kg−1. After 2000 successive charge/discharge cycles at 9.5 Ag−1, the PANI electrode retained 95% of the initial capacity, with practically unaltered Coulombic efficiency of nearly 98%, providing a good base for future studies and practical applications.

AB - A novel impregnation process for the fabrication of cotton nanocomposite with strong antimicrobial activity against antibiotics-resistant bacteria and yeast was developed. The impregnation process includes the sol-gel treatment of fabric with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane in the first step, and synthesis of the CuO/Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) on the fabric surface in the second step. The in situ synthesis of the CuO/Cu2O NPs was based on the adsorption of Cu2+-ions by the introduced amino groups of the sol-gel coating. The adsorbed Cu2+-ions are subsequently reduced in the alkaline solution of NaBH4. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed the formation of CuO/Cu2O NPs. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectrometry analyses indicate that the particle size, agglomeration, and amounts of synthesized NPs were highly affected by the initial concentration of CuSO(4)solution. The toxicity of nanocomposites to human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and antimicrobial activity against Gram-negativeEscherichia coliATCC 25922,E. coliATCC BAA 2469, andKlebsiella pneumoniaeATCC BAA 2146, and Gram-positive bacteriaStaphylococcus aureusATCC 25923,S. aureusATCC 43300 and yeastCandida albicansATCC 24433 strongly depended on the copper content. In addition to excellent antimicrobial activity, controlled release of Cu2+-ions from the fabrics into physiological saline solution was obtained.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of in situ synthesis of Cu-based nanoparticles (NPs) on cotton and viscose rayon fabrics previously modified with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) of different concentrations, with the aim to obtain antibacterial protection. The changes in the chemical structure of the fibers caused by the modification with BTCA were assessed by FTIR spectroscopy. The higher the concentration of the applied BTCA, the larger the amounts of free carboxyl groups in both fabrics. AAS analysis showed that the samples modified with higher concentration of BTCA provided larger Cu2+-ions uptake and consequently, higher content of Cu after Cu2+-ions reduction. The presence of Cu-based NPs on the fabrics was confirmed by FESEM and EDS analyses. XRD analysis revealed that NPs appeared as a mixture of CuO and Cu2O. Synthesized NPs imparted excellent antibacterial activity to both fabrics against E. coli and S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus.

AB - The magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs), used as adsorbents for Cd2+ ions, were prepared by a co-precipitation method using both the untreated natural (SEP) and the partially acid-activated (ASEP) sepiolites as supports for magnetite. The synthesis conditions differed as follows: NaOH or NH3 was added in the SEP or the ASEP suspension before or after the addition of Fe3 and Fe2+. The SEP-based MNCs prepared using NaOH had a lower magnetization, but higher adsorption capacities than the MNCs synthesized using NH3. The order of the mixing of the reagents had a small influence on the properties of SEP-based MNCs, especially when NaOH was used for the synthesis. Due to acidity of the surface functional groups of the ASEP, the magnetic composite could be synthesized only when NH3 was added in the suspension of ASEP having Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Despite of the worse dispersibility of the magnetic particles, the adsorption capacityof the ASEP-based composite was higher than of the MNC with SEP prepared by the same procedure. All the MNCs showed a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and the adsorption capacities were higher than of pure compounds. The adsorption of Cd2+ on the composites was best fitted with the Sips model, which suggested the chemisorption on the heterogeneous surface at energetically non-uniform sites until a monolayer was formed.

AB - Natural (SEP) and partially acid-activated (AAS) sepiolites were used to prepare composites with nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) at different (SEP or AAS)/nZVI ratios in order to achieve the best nZVI dispersibility and the highest adsorption capacity for Cd2+. Despite the higher surface area and pore volume of AAS, better nZVI dispersibility was achieved by using SEP as the support. On the other hand, a lower oxidation degree was achieved during the synthesis using AAS. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the composite with the best nZVI dispersibility, before and after Cd2+ adsorption, confirmed that the surface of the nZVI was composed of oxidized iron species. Metallic iron was not present on the surface, but it was detected in the subsurface region after sputtering. The content of zerovalent iron decreased after Cd2+ adsorption as a result of iron oxidation during Cd2+ adsorption. The XPS depth profile showed that cadmium was present not only at the surface of the composite but also in the subsurface region. The adsorption isotherms for Cd2+ confirmed that the presence of SEP and AAS decreased the agglomeration of the nZVI particles in comparison to the pure nZVI, which provided a higher adsorption capacity. The results showed that the prevention of both aggregation and oxidation during the synthesis was necessary for obtaining an SEP/AAS-nZVI composite with a high adsorption capacity, but oxidation during adsorption was beneficial for Cd2+ removal. The formation of strong bonds between Cd2+ and the adsorbents sites of different energy until monolayer formation was proposed according to modeling of the adsorption isotherms.

AB - Lipase B from Candida antarctica was immobilized by adsorption onto laboratory prepared metakaolin. This support has great potential for enzyme immobilization since it has good mechanical characteristics and thermal stability and it is easily obtained from naturally abundant raw kaolin, as presented in this paper. Immobilization process was studied as a function of pH, ionic strength and protein concentration in terms of immobilization and activity yield. It was shown that immobilization occurred via the Langmuir model, and that electrostatic forces were major, but not exclusive contributor for the binding process. The optimum conditions were achieved in 10 mM acetic buffer pH 5. Biocatalyst obtained under optimum conditions was further successfully used in the synthesis of lipophilic antioxidants, where conversion yields as high as 100% were achieved.

AB - Low intrinsic electronic conductivity is the main disadvantage of LiFePO4 when used as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries. The paper offers experimental proofs of the theoretical prediction that fluorine doping of LiFePO4 can enhance its electrical conductivity. The LiFePO4 and fluorine-doped LiFePO4 olivine type, carbon-free powders are synthesized and examined. The crystal structure refinements in the Pnma space group reveal that doping with fluorine ions preserves the olivine structure, while reducing both the lattice parameters and the antisite defect, and increasing the crystallite size. A small amount of incorporated fluorine enhances the electrical conductivity from 4.6×10−7 S cm−1 to 2.3×10−6 S cm−1 and has a positive impact on the electrochemical performance. Several spectroscopy techniques (Mössbauer, FTIR, and Raman) reveal differences between the two powders and additionally support the findings of both the Rietveld refinement and the conductivity measurements.

AB - Poly(aniline-co-(m-aminobenzoic acid)) was synthesized electrochemically at graphite electrode under galvanostatic conditions. Aqueous electrolyte for synthesis was consisted of HCl and different amount of aniline and m-aminobenzoic acid. The presence of the meta positioned carboxylic group in m-aminobenzoic acid influenced higher co-polymerization potential, different morphology and electrochemical behavior of copolymers compared to polyaniline. Electrochemical activity is achieved by proton exchange in neutral environment that can result in a faster charge/discharge process, which is in the case of PANI limited by slow anion exchange, making this material promising for consideration in super-capacitors and in biological system.

AB - In this study carbon nanotubes (CNT) and silica nanoparticles (SiO2) were added to enhance the dynamic mechanical and anti-stabbing properties of the polyurethaneip-aramid multiaxial fabric (Kolon fabric) composites for ballistic protection. The SiO2 were modified (mSiO(2)) and CNT were oxidised (o-CNT) in order to fabricate o-CNT/mSiO(2) hybrid nanoparticles. Various kinds of nanoreinforcement particles were added into poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution. The results revealed that the films PVB/oMWCNT/mSiO(2) and PVB/o-SWCNT/mSiO(2) yielded 101% and 141% improvement in indentation hardness together with 89% and 117% improvement in reduced elastic modulus, respectively, compared to the neat PVB film. The experiments demonstrated that the Kolon/PVB/o-SWCNT/mSiO(2) fabric sample yielded 35% improvement in absorbed energy and 50% improvement in the storage modulus compared to the Kolon/PVB sample.

AB - Carbon cryogel/ceria composite, with 10 wt.% of ceria, was synthesized by mixing of ceria and carbon cryogel (CC). The sample was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption of arsenic(III) ions from aqueous solutions on carbon cryogel/ceria nanocomposite was studied as a function of time, solution pH and As(III) ion concentration. The results are correlated with previous investigations of adsorption mechanism of arsenic(III) on carbon cryogel. Adsorption dose experiments showed that the mass of the adsorbent was reduced for 20 times, in comparison with pure CC, for the same amount of adsorbed arsenic(III) ions. BET isotherm was used to interpret the experimental data for modelling liquid phase adsorption.

AB - This study demonstrates that PEG-assisted hydrothermal synthesis provides a convenient and eco-friendly route to fabrication of mesoporous magnetite with enhanced capacity for phosphate removal, excellent potential for magnetic separation and good reusability. Adsorption of phosphate onto 4 laboratory prepared magnetite powders was investigated in a systematic manner. Powders were synthesized in poly(ethylene) glycol-free or assisted conditions (PEGs 400 and 20,000 at varied PEG/water ratio), and characterized in terms of crystalline structure, and magnetic, morphological, textural, and acid-base properties. PEG acted as a powerful pore forming agent, the PEG/water ratio being the key factor in developing the surface area and mesoporosity of magnetite. Uptake capacity for phosphates increased with an increase in surface area and pore volume. PEG 20,000 at a ratio of 3:1 gave the best result. This mesoporous (D-max = 11 nm), nano-scale ( lt 10 nm) magnetite was ca. 9 times more efficient than nonporous micrometric powder derived from PEG-free synthesis (Langmuir maximum capacity, q(m) = 26.2 vs. 3.0 mg g(-1)). The adsorption was pH-dependent, in accord with variations in zeta potential of magnetite. Opposite shifts of isoelectric point and point of zero charge confirmed specific adsorption of phosphates at water/magnetite interface which proceeded via replacement of surface hydroxyls and sulfates.

AB - The sorption of Ni2+ on sepiolite functionalized by covalent grafting of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ethylenediamine triacetic acid trisodium salt, MSEAS, was studied in batch experiments as a function of the initial metal concentration, the equilibration time, the pH value and the temperature. The modification of sepiolite resulted in enhanced Ni2+ retention with a capacity of 0.261 mmol g(-1) at 298 K. The retention of Ni2+ occurred dominantly by specific sorption and exchange of Mg2+ from the sepiolite structure. The sorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The sorption equilibrium results were best described by the non-linear form of the Langmuir sorption equation. The values of the thermodynamic parameters (changes of enthalpy, free energy and entropy) were calculated from temperature dependent sorption isotherms and their values showed that the sorption of Ni2+ onto modified sepiolite was endothermic.

AB - The simulated shapes of the polarization curves were correlated with the type of metal electrodeposition process control as a function of the ratio of the exchange current density to the limiting diffusion current density (j(0)/j(L)). Diagnostic criteria based on the j(0)/j(L) ratios were established. For j(0)/j(L) > 100, the system is under the ohmic control. In the range 1 LT j(0)/j(L) LT = 100, there is mixed ohmic-diffusion control. Pure diffusion control appears in the range 0.1 LT j(0)/j(L) LT = 1. For j(0)/j(L) LT = 0.1, the system is activation controlled at low overpotentials. The proposed diagnostic criteria were verified by comparison of the simulated curves with experimentally recorded ones and by morphological analysis of deposits obtained under the different types of control of the metal electrodeposition process.

AB - The objective of this study was characterization of anodic film obtained when Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy was treated electrochemically in 3.5% wt. NaCI under potentiostatic conditions. At the potential of +0.25 V a complex multilayer film is formed. XRD shows that it consists of CuCI and zinc hydroxichlorides with a small amount of Cu2O, probably formed in the film pores. The anodic film is a mixture of Cu2O, CuCI, Zn-5(OH)(8)center dot H2O and beta-Zn(OH)Cl. Phases of the alloy, Ag and Cu rich, show different anodic behavior. It was assumed that all phonon lines in the obtained Raman spectra were of the Lorentzian type, which is one of the common type of lines for this kind of analysis. Phases of Ag, CuCI, fl-Zn(OH)CI, Cu2O and Zn-5(OH)(8)(Cl)(2)center dot H2O were all registered by XRD.

AB - Biorefinery concept in lactic acid (LA) fermentation based on parallel production of LA and biomass enriched feed on a waste substrate was investigated. In this study, nitrogen opulent liquid stillage was used as a media for repeated batch L(+) LA fermentation by probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 7469 immobilized onto non-modified and Mg-modified zeolite. The highest LA concentration of 47.60 g/L, overall productivity of 1.41 g/L/h, a yield of 0.86 g/g and yield coefficient of 0.96 g/g were obtained in fermentation with utilization of immobilized biocatalyst onto Mg-modified zeolite and Mg(OH)(2) as a neutralizing agent. Very high number of 8 x 10(10) CFU/g cells immobilized onto Mg-modified zeolite, proven beneficial effect of zeolite in animal health and probiotic characteristics of L. rhamnosus qualify solid remains after the fermentation as a high quality probiotic feed additive. High productivity of LA in the fermentation and valorization of the remains in animal nutrition could recommend this process which employs a simple modification of zeolite as a promising one for bio-based renewable LA production.

AB - The immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase by adsorption was performed onto commercial titania powder (Degussa P25). The change of titania particles surface was diagnosed by means of FTIR and FESEM analysis, as well as by shift of zeta potential value towards that of lipase. A detailed study of the effect of immobilization on enzyme kinetic, temperature stability, as well as on potential for its reuse in aqueous organic media was undertaken. Immobilization of lipase altered enzyme affinity toward substrates with different length of carbon chain in hydrolytic reaction. The Vmax value decreased 2–8-fold, where major constraint was registered for the ester containing the longest carbon chain. Thermostability of lipase improved more than 7-fold at 60 °C. Significant potential for reuse in water solutions was also found after immobilization. In cyclohexane immobilized lipase catalyzed synthesis of amyl octanoate by ping-pong bi–bi mechanism with inhibition by amyl alcohol. Obtained kinetic constants were Vmax = 26.4 μmol min−1, KAc = 0.52 mol/L, KAl = 0.2 mol/L and Ki,Al = 0.644 mol/L. Esterification activity remained 60% after 5 reuse cycles in cyclohexane indicating moderate reuse stability. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The immobilization of alpha-amylase via adsorption on magnetic particles coated with polyaniline was studied. The support was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The obtained magnetic particles were agglomerates of nanoparticles with sizes below 100 nm. The effects of various factors on immobilization, including time, the initial enzyme concentration, pH, and temperature, were examined. The optimum pH, temperature, and time for immobilization were established to be 7, 45 degrees C and 75 min, respectively. The maximum amount of adsorbed alpha-amylase of 10/100mg support was determined at the 5 mg/mL enzyme concentration. It appeared that alpha-amylase was stabilized in terms of pH and temperature by adsorption on magnetic particles coated with polyaniline. The good agreement of the equilibrium data with the Langmuir isotherm model confirmed the monolayer coverage of enzyme molecules on the surface of magnetic particles, and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 55.6/100mg support at 25 degrees C. The biocatalyst retained 55.5 +/- 1.63% of its initial activity after nine cycles of reuse in starch hydrolysis at 60 degrees C in a batch reactor. The immobilized enzyme also showed very good storage stability.

AB - The aim of this study was to compare the effect of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nano-rods (HAP rods) and HAP nano-sticks (HAP sticks) added to commercial adhesives on the macro-shear bond strength (SBS) to dentine and morphology of the adhesive-dentine interface. HAP was added to Single Bond Universal (SBU, 3M ESPE) and Te-Econom Bond (TeE; Ivoclar Vivadent), in the form of water suspensions to avoid agglomeration of nano-particles and to achieve HAP concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%. Following a 'total-etch' or a 'self-etch' protocol, the adhesives were applied to flat dentine surface of 162 intact human, third molars (N = 6/group). Composite (Z250, 3M ESPE) was built-up using a split stainless steel mould, 3 mm in diameter. SBS was tested using a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min until fracture. Data were statistically analysed using two-way and one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post-test (alpha = 0.05). HAP(rods) had no significant effect on SBS of the tested adhesives while HAP(sticks) improved bond strength to dentine only of adhesives applied following the 'total-etch' total-etch protocol. SBS values of SBU containing 1% HAP(sticks) (15.10 +/- 2.96 MPa) and TeE containing 0.5% HAP(sticks) applied following the total-etch protocol (12.96 +/- 4.48 MPa) were higher than those of their respective control groups (10.36 +/- 2.68 and 7.97 +/- 3.64 MPa). Samples with higher SBS showed more 'mixed' failures. HAP nano-fillers may improve bond strength of total-etch adhesives without an adverse effect on adhesive dispersion on dentine and its ability to infiltrate dentinal tubules.

AB - Ceria coating is formed on Al from the ceria sol prepared exclusively by forced hydrolysis of Ce(NO3)(4), in order to test their ability to protect Al from corrosion. The characterization of sol-gel-processed ceria coating and coating/Al assembly brings new issues on Al corrosion and protection caused by unique properties of the sol-gel coating. The corrosion behaviour of bare Al and Al/CeO2 is investigated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) during the exposure to NaCl aqueous solution. The morphology and composition of the samples are examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. EIS data showed greater corrosion resistance of CeO2-coated aluminium in comparison to bare Al at long exposure times. CeO2 coating does not hinder completely the corrosion processes on Al. The Al beneath CeO2 coating is subjected to intrinsic formation of a uniform protective coating/Al interphase, cross-linked by AlO(OH) fibre-like structures. They appear created by corrosive medium from the coating reversely gelled by NaCl solution. As the fibre network is created during exposure, Al becomes better protected than by spontaneous formation of porous passive layer of Al(OH)(3) on bare aluminium. Sol-gel ceria coatings thus improve corrosion resistance of aluminium during prolonged exposure to corrosive medium.

AB - The adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ from equimolar multicomponent solutions onto natural and Fe(III)-modified zeolites was studied by batch experiments in order to determine the influence of the competitive effect on the efficiency ions removal at different initial concentrations and different temperatures. Kinetic and equilibrium studies showed that affinity of both zeolites was the highest for Pb2+ and much lower for Zn2+ and Cd2+. The competitive effect was negligible at lower concentrations, while Zn2+ and especially Cd2+ ions adsorption was suppressed as the concentrations were increased. Affinity of natural zeolite toward the ions was lower than that of the modified zeolite, as was shown for adsorption from single-component solutions. External film diffusion was the rate-controlling step at lower concentrations and for ions of higher affinity for the adsorbent, while intraparticle diffusion was dominant at higher concentrations and for ions of lower affinity for the adsorbent. The increasing spontaneity of the adsorption process with increasing temperature and the positive values of enthalpy of adsorption indicated the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Structural investigations of the adsorbents loaded with Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ ions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the higher content of the ions in the surface and subsurface regions of the Fe(III)-modified than of the natural zeolite. XPS depth profiles of the loaded Fe(III)-modified zeolite showed that surface mechanisms of adsorption were dominant in the case of lead and cadmium, while zinc loading on the zeolite sample was governed mainly by an ion-exchange process.

AB - Natural sepiolite from Andrici (Serbia) was functionalized by covalent grafting of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine triacetic acid trisodium salt onto the Si-OH sepiolite groups. The functionalized material, MSEAS, was characterized by determination of the phase composition by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, analysis of the morphological characteristics by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential thermal analyses (DTA), determination of the specific surface areas and pore size distribution using the BET method and point of zero charge (pH(pzc)) determination. The crystal structure of sepiolite did not change significantly upon surface modification. The FT-IR and DTA analyses confirmed that the modified sample maintained the basic structure of sepiolite and the presence of organic groups in the functionalized sepiolite sample. The point of zero charge of MSEAS in KNO3 solutions of different concentrations, determined by the batch technique, was at pH 7.0 +/- 0.1.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of impregnation of polypropylene (PP) and corona modified PP non-woven material with thymol in supercritical solvent in order to fabricate eco-friendly antimicrobial textile material. Carbon dioxide was used as a working fluid. The morphological changes on the PP fiber surface induced by corona treatment at atmospheric pressure as well as the presence of thymol on the fiber surface after impregnation were confirmed by FESEM analysis. Chemical changes were assessed by FTIR analysis. Antimicrobial activity of the modified PP non-woven material was tested against Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli and fungus Candida albicans. Although both PP non-woven material impregnated with thymol and corona activated PP impregnated with thymol provided maximum microbial reduction, corona pre-treated material was much faster wetted, which could be an advantage in wound healing.

AB - Olivine-type LiFePO4 composite powders with carbon were synthesized by freeze drying and subsequent thermal annealing. The main purpose of the research is to explore how various dicarboxylic acids as carbon sources influence the electrochemical properties of the resulting composites. Three dicarboxylic acids (oxalic, malonic, and adipic) were used as a carbon source. The synthesis was followed by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, particle-size analysis, and electrochemical experiments. It is shown that the amount of the in situ formed carbon depends on the thermal behaviour of the acids in inert atmosphere rather than on their carbon content. Cyclic voltammetry experiments and galvanostatic cycling illustrate the behaviour of different powders: the powder obtained with oxalic acid yields the highest discharge capacity at small currents, while the one obtained with adipic acid shows better high-current response. Malonic acid has turned out to be a poor carbon source and it consequently yields powder with poor electrochemical performance. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - Electrochemical formation of polyaniline (PANI) modified electrode was performed galvanostatically from aqueous solution of 1.0 mol dm(-3) HCl containing 0.2 mol dm(-3) aniline at current densities ranging from 0.5-3.0 mA cm(-2). The morphology of PANI electrode consisted of highly developed nanofibrous network with electrocatalytic features towards oxidation of ascorbic acid, reflected in increase of the peak current similar to 2.5 times and shift of the oxidation potential by 0.32 V to less positive values. Response of PANI modified electrode was obtained from anodic LSV curves. Current peak potentials decreased with increase of pH with slope of similar to 32 mV pH(-1), indicating two electron charge transfer process with liberation of one proton characteristic of an electrochemical reaction followed by a chemical step.
