AB - The possibility of using waste tailings produced by flotation in the lead and zinc mine of Grot, Serbia as a potential source of secondary mineral raw materials was examined. The aim of the research was primarily to carry out a detailed characterization in order to determine the dominant minerals, and, for the first time, to trace the changes occurring in the unit cells of the minerals present in that deposit. There was also a need to determine the exact proportions of the present mineral phases for their further application and utilization as natural resources in environmental protection. Samples were taken from three different sections of tailings: the crest of dam (JKB), outlet pipe of the flotation facility (JOF) and hydrocyclone overflow (JHC). Granulometric separation was performed to facilitate the extraction of certain minerals from waste. The results showed that all samples mainly contained quartz, clinochlore, calcite, albite, pyrite and biotite, but their ratios in each sample varied significantly. After characterization, samples were separated into different fractions and their mineralogical compositions were determined. Depending on the fraction, the mineralogical compositions also changed. Mineralogy and geochemical analysis indicate that waste tailings can be used as a secondary mineral raw materials source applicable in various industries.

AB - Waste vitreous enamels from the heating device production process were used for partial replacement of cement in the mortar and concrete production industry. This waste, due to the high content of heavy metals, is classified as hazardous waste. At the same time, waste vitreous enamels possess pozzolanic activity and belong to class 15 (WEP—generated during the production process of heating devices, premix technology), that is 5 (WETM—generated during the production process of heating devices, classic technology) of pozzolanic materials. The purpose of this research was to develop new composites from these wastes to reduce the deposition of the toxic compounds and reduce their environmental impact. The chemical and physical-chemical characterization and pozzolanic activity of the raw waste materials were studied by a mixture of complementary methods, as well as physical-mechanical characterization and a leaching test of mortar and concrete composites. The results indicate that the replacement of cement with WEP up to 30%, or with WETM up to 20% does not significantly affect the quality of concrete in comparison to the quality of the reference concrete prepared with 100% cement. The leaching test showed no significant release of toxic elements for both obtained composites.

AB - Fundamental research of inorganic polymers prepared from available aluminosilicate precursors represent an innovative class of materials characterized by low energy consumption for production. This is just one of the reasons why their use is focused in protecting the environment for removing of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The concentration of hydroxide as activator solution plays an important role in the geopolymerization process. The present study examined the use of geopolymer materials, obtained in reaction of geopolymerizations of metakaolin as precursor activated with NaOH concentration 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 mol/dm(3) for removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions. The structure and properties of the obtained geopolymer samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and diffuse reflection infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). To investigate the surface charge of geopolymers the zeta potential measurements were performed. Batch adsorption experiments conducted at room temperature (23 +/- 1 degrees C) showed that the adsorption pattern followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum removal of cadmium obtained from batch studies was 84.1% for GP6M at pH approximate to 6.7. The results generally showed that geopolymer samples could be considered as a potential adsorbent for cadmium removal from aqueous solutions.

AB - This paper outlines the production of an inorganic polymer/geopolymer using a metakaolin by an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean technology to conserve natural environment and resources. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of geopolymerization of metakaolin is investigated. Also, process of aging time of geopolymer is followed by several analytical methods. The structure of metakaolin and metakaolin based geopolymers and their physicochemical properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and after 28 days scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was applied for the surface characterization of the samples. A shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X (X=Al, Si, Na...) bands as the molarity of activator increasing during geopolymerization process was observed by FTIR. Mass spectra of geopolymers were characterized by MALDI TOF mass spectrometer. Structural reorganization of geopolymer samples occurs during the curing/aging in accordance with a geopolymerization mechanism.

AB - Continuous development of new technologies leads to increasing pollution of water, thus creating the need for new materials that could be used in the processes of its purification. Therefore, adsorbents prepared from agricultural waste, resins, silica gels, zeolites, clays, flying ash, aluminosilicates and other materials are being investigated as potential sorbents. Recently, research has focused on improving the adsorption capacity by modifying the material by binding or impregnating inorganic and organic molecules on the surface. In this paper, the kaolinite modification with amino acids, histidine and cysteine, was performed to improve the efficiency of adsorption of cadmium ion. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) of raw and modified kaolinite was determined by titration with methylene blue. The influence of operating parameters, such as adsorption time, pH value of the solution, initial metal concentration and temperature, on the capacity and adsorption efficiency were examined. Better agreement of experimental results with Freundlich's adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second order kinetics model suggest that the adsorption of cadmium ions on the investigated adsorbents takes place by chemisorption mechanism. The change of Gibbs free energy has a negative value for both adsorbents, which shows that the adsorption process is spontaneous. The efficacy of cadmium removal from the aqueous solution onto histidine-modified kaolinite increased from 78.6% to 91.8%.

AB - Alumosilicate polymers (geopolymers) based on metakaolin as precursor and alkaline activators of different concentrations (2M, 4M, 6M and 8M NaOH/Na2SiO3) were used to remove ions of cadmium from wastewater. Experiments were carried out in a batch process at room temperature (23 ± 1 ° C) for different operating parameters: adsorption time, pH value of solution, initial concentration of metal and mass of adsorbents. It was found that the optimum pH value for all adsorbents is above 6.0. The adsorption efficiency increases with increasing pH of the solution. With an increase in the initial concentration of cadmium, the adsorption capacity increases and reaches a value of over 200.0 mg/g. The experimental results have better agreement with Freundlich's adsorption isotherm (surface heterogeneity, hemisorption mechanism) and the pseudo-second order model (the principle of the chemisorption mechanism and adsorption rate depend on the adsorbent concentration). Alumosilicate geopolymer samples were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).

AB - The microstructural characterization and adsorption properties of metakaolin (MK) and alkali-activated metakaolin, known as geopolymer materials (GP) were investigated. The structure and properties of the metakaolin and obtained geopolymer were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, based on the analysis of adsorption efficiency, microstructure and mineral structure, the difference between geopolymer and metakaolin on the performance of immobilizing heavy metals have been discussed. The kinetics of adsorption can be represented by pseudo-second order equation. The results of lead ions adsorption experiments were best fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm for both investigated adsorbents. The highest removal efficiencies of alkali-activated material based on metakaolin was found 97.5% at pH 4 and metakaolin removal efficiencies was found 92% at pH 5.5.

AB - Ceria coating is formed on Al from the ceria sol prepared exclusively by forced hydrolysis of Ce(NO3)(4), in order to test their ability to protect Al from corrosion. The characterization of sol-gel-processed ceria coating and coating/Al assembly brings new issues on Al corrosion and protection caused by unique properties of the sol-gel coating. The corrosion behaviour of bare Al and Al/CeO2 is investigated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) during the exposure to NaCl aqueous solution. The morphology and composition of the samples are examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. EIS data showed greater corrosion resistance of CeO2-coated aluminium in comparison to bare Al at long exposure times. CeO2 coating does not hinder completely the corrosion processes on Al. The Al beneath CeO2 coating is subjected to intrinsic formation of a uniform protective coating/Al interphase, cross-linked by AlO(OH) fibre-like structures. They appear created by corrosive medium from the coating reversely gelled by NaCl solution. As the fibre network is created during exposure, Al becomes better protected than by spontaneous formation of porous passive layer of Al(OH)(3) on bare aluminium. Sol-gel ceria coatings thus improve corrosion resistance of aluminium during prolonged exposure to corrosive medium.

The anticorrosive properties of ceria coatings were investigated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) during the exposure to 0.03% NaCl. AB - The kinetics and mechanism of the hydrogen oxidation reaction were studied in 0.5 mol dm-3 HClO4 solution on an electrode based on titanium oxide with Magneli phase structure-supported platinum electrocatalyst applied on rotation Au disk electrode. Pt catalyst was prepared by impregnation method from 2-propanol solution of Pt(NH3)2(NO2)2 and sub-stoichiometric titanium oxide powder. Sub-stiochiometric titanium oxide support was characterized by X-ray diffraction and BET techniques. The synthesized catalyst was analyzed by TEM technique. Based on Tafel-Heyrovsky-Volmer mechanism the corresponding kinetic equations were derived to describe the hydrogen oxidation current-potential behavior on RDE over the entire potential region. The polarization RDE curves were fitted with derived polarization equations according to proposed model. The fitting shows that the HOR on Pt proceeds most likely via the Tafel-Volmer (TV) pathway in the lower potential region, while the Heyrovsky-Volmer (HV) pathway is operative in the higher potential region. It is pointed out that Tafel equation that has been frequently used for the kinetics analysis in the HOR, can not reproduce the polarization curves measured with high mass-transport rates. Polarization measurements on RDE revealed that the Pt catalyst deposited on titanium suboxide support showed equal specific activity for the HOR compared to conventional carbon-supported Pt fuel cell catalyst. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. abstract = "The kinetics and mechanism of the hydrogen oxidation reaction were studied in 0.5 mol dm-3 HClO4 solution on an electrode based on titanium oxide with Magneli phase structure-supported platinum electrocatalyst applied on rotation Au disk electrode. AB - Itaconic acid, IA (C5H6O4), was investigated as a potential flocculant for the aqueous processing of alumina powders. The adsorption of IA, as a function of its concentration and pH value of the solution, onto the alumina surface was studied by the solution depletion method. The stability of the suspensions in the presence of itaconic acid was evaluated in light of the surface charge of the alumina powder used, the degree of dissociation of IA, as well as the sedimentation behavior and rheology of the suspensions. It was found that the adsorption process is extremely pH dependent; the maximum adsorption of IA onto alumina surface occurring at a pH close to the value of the first IA dissociation constant, pKa1. Also, IA does not influence the value of the point of zero charge of alumina. It was shown that IA represents an efficient flocculant for concentrated acidic alumina suspensions.
Stabilnost suspenzija aluminijum-oksida u prisustvu itakonske kiseline objašnjena je uzimajući u obzir površinsko naelektrisanje aluminijum-oksida, stepen disocijacije itakonske kiseline, sedimentaciono ponašanje i reološka svojstva suspenzija.
