AB - Amorphous powders of iron doped 3:2 mullite (3Al(2)O(3)center dot 2SiO(2)) were prepared by sol-gel combustion process using ethanol-water solutions of Al(III) nitrate, Fe(III) nitrate, TEOS and urea. Compositions up to 15 wt% of Fe2O3 were investigated. After combustion and heat treatment at 800 degrees C for 4 h, XRD analysis confirmed that the powders were amorphous. This is in agreement with the thermodynamic predictions that direct formation of mullite has not occurred during the aluminum nitrate - urea combustion reaction. XRD patterns of uniaxially pressed and sintered pellets at 1550 degrees C for 4 h revealed the crystal structure of orthorhombic mullite. The lattice parameters and unit cell volume increases as the mullite solid solutions were enriched by iron. The TGA/DSC analysis showed the reducing of crystallization temperature of iron doped mullites with increasing of iron content in reaction mixtures. The mullitization reaction is two-step process including formation of transient spinel phase below 1000 degrees C and mullite crystallization at temperatures about 1200 degrees C. The SEM micrographs of the sintered samples reveal elongated mullite grains with grain length up to 40 mu m. Increasing of the iron content in the reaction mixture enhances the grain size and the grains become elongated and better packed increasing the density of sintered samples.

AB - Synthetic biomaterials based on fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite are potentially attractive for orthopedic and dental implant applications. The new synthesis of fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite samples were done by neutralization, which consists of adding the solution of HF and H3PO4 in suspension of Ca(OH)(2). Characterization studies from XRD, SEM and FTIR spectra showed that crystals are obtained with apatite structure and those particles of all samples are nano size, with an average length of 80 nm and about 15-25 nm in diameter. The central composite design was used in order to determine the optimal conditions for the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized samples. In order to evaluate the influence of operating parameters on the percent of viable cell reduction of Streptococcus mutans, three independent variables were chosen: exposure time, pH of saline and floride concentration in apatite samples. The experimental and predicted antimicrobial activities were in close agreement. Antimicrobial activity of the samples increases with the increase of fluoride concentration and the decreased pH of saline. The maximum antimicrobial activity was achieved at the initial pH of 4.

AB - Synthesis of La-9.33(SiO4)(6)O-2 was performed by a new method that represents the combination of sol-gel and combustion procedures using glycine as the fuel. Syntheses were performed from ethanol-water solutions of oxides precursors, lanthanum nitrate and tetraethyl orthosilicate. The optimum synthesis parameters have been established by varying molar ratio of tetraethyl orthosilicate to water as well as glycine to NO3- ions. The phase identification and the structural characterization were performed by X-ray powder diffraction. The pure nanocrystalline La-9.33(SiO4)(6)O-2 with the crystallite sizes of 32 nm was directly synthesized during combustion process of homogeneous gel that was generated in solution with the following molar ratios: glycine: NO3- = 0.56 and tetraethyl orthosilicate: water = 1:20. Well-crystallized La-9.33(SiO4)(6)O-2 structure was obtained after heating at 1200 degrees C. The lattice parameters a = 9.7156(9) and c = 7.1810(8) angstrom confirmed the composition La-9.33(SiO4)(6)O-2.

AB - Light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis, hardness and uniaxial tensile tests have been applied to study the mechanism and kinetics of aging of the Cu-5 wt.% Ni-2.5 wt.% Ti alloy under the influence of static and dynamic conditions. Hardening of alloy during aging is a consequence of precipitation of (Ni, Cu)(3)Ti secondary particles with the hcp crystal structure, i.e., the same as the eta phase (Ni3Ti). During static (SSA) and dynamic strain aging (DSA), the strength of the alloy is increased compared to quench aging (QA). This effect is most pronounced during the dynamic process. The total concentration of vacancies participating in the process of DSA is increased compared to the vacancy concentration during SSA and QA. This may be explained by the fact that vacancies are not annihilated at dislocations, but their concentration is preserved through the vacancy - precipitate reaction.

AB - Zn–Fe alloy electrochemically deposited on steel under various deposition conditions were investigated using anodic linear sweep voltammetry (ALSV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for phase structure determination, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis for determination of chemical composition and polarization measurements and open circuit potential measurements for determination of corrosion properties. The influence of deposition current density on the chemical composition, phase structure and corrosion stability of Zn–Fe alloys was studied. It was shown that deposition current density strongly affects the corrosion stability of Zn–Fe alloys, while Zn–Fe alloy electrodeposited at 4Adm-2 exhibited the lowest corrosion rate.

AB - Alkoxy-derived cordierite gels were synthesized from tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), aluminum isopropoxide (Al(OPri)(3)), and magnesium ethoxide (Mg(OEt)(2)). TEOS was partially hydrolyzed at molar ratios H2O/TEOS=1.2, in the presence of hydrochloric acid as a catalyst, HCl/TEOS=0.1. Aluminum and magnesium alkoxides were added successively or as a double alkoxide. Phase transformations occurring in the gel were studied by differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffractometry, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In all cases, mu-cordierite crystallized at similar temperatures (950-1000degreesC) with small amounts of spinel, which confirms dominant influence of the optimal conditions for partial hydrolysis of TEOS on the gels homogeneity. The transformation of mu- into alpha-cordierite began at about 1100degreesC. Broadening of diffraction peaks and appearance of new bands in the FT IR spectra confirmed the transformation of alpha- into modulated beta-cordierite at temperatures above 1300degreesC. Differential thermal analysis under nonisothermal conditions also proved homogeneous nucleation with constant rate and three-dimensional crystallite growth during mu-cordierite crystallization. The overall activation energy of the crystallization of mu-cordierite is 580+/-81 kJ/mol.

AB - Zn-Co alloys electrochemically deposited on steel under various deposition conditions were investigated. The influence of deposition current density, temperature and composition of deposition solution on the phase structure and corrosion properties of Zn-Co alloys were studied. It was found that Zn-Co alloy obtained from chloride solution at 5 A dm(-2) showed the best corrosion properties, so this alloy was chosen for further examination. Epoxy coating was electrodeposited on steel and steel modified by Zn-Co alloy using constant voltage method. The effect of Zn-Co alloy on the corrosion behavior of the protective system based on epoxy coating is interpreted in terms of electrochemical and transport properties, as well as of thermal stability.

AB - Three cordierite-type gels were prepared from an aqueous solution of Mg(NO3)2, a boehmite sol and silica sols of very small particle sizes. The effect of varying the silica particle size on the crystallization and densification behaviour was studied. Phase development was examined by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction, while the densification behaviour was characterized by measuring the linear shrinkage of pellets. The activation energy of densification by viscous flow was determined using the Franckel model for non-isothermal conditions and a constant heating rate. The results show that spinel crystallizes from the colloidal gels prior to cristobalite, and their reaction gives a-cordierite, which is specific for three-phase gels. Decreasing the silica particles size lowers the cristobalite crystallization temperature and the a-cordierite formation temperature. The activation energy of densification by viscous flow is lower and the densification more efficient, the smaller the silica particles are.

AB - A triphasic cordierite-type gel was prepared from silica sol, boehmite sol, and an aqueous solution of Mg(NO3)(2). 6H(2)O. The silica sol was obtained from water glass by the ion exchange method, while boehmite sol was obtained by peptization of freshly prepared Al(OH)(3), Phase transformations occurring in the get were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffractometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Spinel was observed to crystallize from the gel prior to cristobalite; their reaction subsequently yielded alpha -cordierite, At higher temperatures, alpha -cordierite transformed into modulated beta -cordierite. Kinetic parameters of alpha -cordierite formation and alpha -cordierite to modulated beta -cordierite transformation were determined by differential scanning calorimetry under nonisothermal conditions. Formation of alpha -cordierite was found to be a diffusion-controlled process. with an overall activation energy Of E-a = 1232 +/- 66 kJ/mol. During the alpha -- gt beta -cordierite transformation, a modulated phase was formed by surface transformation of alpha -cordierite, The overall activation energy for the formation of the modulated structure is E-a = 583 +/- 77 kJ/mol.

AB - The chemical composition and phase structure of Zn-Ni alloys obtained by electrodeposition under various conditions were investigated. The influence of the deposition solution and deposition current density on the composition, phase structure, current efficiency and corrosion properties of Zn-Ni alloys were examined. It was shown that the chemical composition and phase structure affect the anticorrosive properties of Zn-Ni alloys. A Zn-Ni alloy electrodeposited from a chloride solution at 20 mA cm(-2) exhibited the best corrosion properties, so this alloy was chosen for further examination. Epoxy coatings were formed by cathodic electrodeposition of an epoxy resin on steel and steel modified with a Zn-Ni alloy. From the time dependence of the pore resistance, coating capacitance and relative permittivity of the epoxy coating, the diffusion coefficient of water through the epoxy coating, D(H2O), and its thermal stability, it was shown that the Zn-Ni sublayer significantly affects the electrochemical and transport properties, as well as the thermal stability of epoxy coatings. On the basis of the experimental results it can be concluded that modification of a steel surface by a Zn-Ni alloy improves the corrosion protection of epoxy coatings.

AB - Cordierite powders containing very pure submicrometre spherical particles have been synthesized by the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Aqueous solutions of silicic acid, Al(NO3)(3) . 9H(2)O and MgCl2 . 6H(2)O were used as precursors. Scanning electron micrographs have shown that particle surfaces were smooth and the mean particle diameter was 0.834 mu m. For the estimation of chemical and phase composition and phase transformation temperatures, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and infrared analysis have been applied. It was found that during spray pyrolysis, the condensation of silicic acid mostly occurred while aluminium and magnesium ion remained incorported between Si-O-Si chains. By subsequent heating to over 800 degrees C, Si-O-M bonds (M = Al, Mg) were formed. The synthesis of cordierite occurred by the crystallization of mu-cordierite from the amorphous phase at 900 degrees C followed by the phase transformation of mu- into alpha-cordierite in the temperature range 1100-1200 degrees C.
