AB - Lindane belongs to the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) group, which can cause carcinogenic,
endocrine, and neurological problems in an organism. The widespread presence of lindane in the
environment demands efficient methods of its removal. In the present work, we investigated the
removal of lindane from an aqueous solution using a synthesized macroporous copolymer surface
modified with different functional groups through two-step post-functionalization. The modified
copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), scanning
electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry. For the kinetics of lindane sorption,
pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami, and fractional power models were used
via linear and non-linear regression analyses. The quality of the fitting of each model to experimental
data was assessed based on seven error functions: coefficient of determination (R2), Marquardt’s
percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chi-square statistic test (χ2), hybrid fractional error function
(HYBRID), the sum of the errors squared (SSE), sum of the absolute errors (EABS), and average
relative error (ARE). The investigation of error estimation methods showed that the pseudo-secondorder
model best fits the experimental kinetics data for both regression analyses. The mechanism of
lindane sorption was investigated by subjecting the data to the liquid film diffusion model,
intraparticle diffusion model, Bangham, and Boyd models. The results showed that intraparticle
diffusion was not the sole rate-controlling step; film-diffusion also affected the sorption process.

AB - This study evaluated the equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics of vanadium sorption from
aqueous solution onto nanocomposite functionalized with diethylene triamine in batch conditions.
The effects of temperature, solution pH, and initial concentration of vanadium were examined. The
maximum sorption capacity of vanadium on the tested sorbent was achieved at pH 6. The sorption
capacity increased with increasing temperature and initial concentration. The equilibrium adsorption
data were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Jovanovic, Toth, Sips, Khan, and RedlichPeterson isotherm models. The kinetics data were studied using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-secondorder, the fractional power, Elovich, and Avrami models. A non-linear fitting method was used to
compare the best fitting of the equilibrium and kinetic data. The sorption equilibrium data were best
represented by the Langmuir, Khan, Toth, and Redlich–Peterson isotherms. The adsorption kinetics
was estimated to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The mechanism of vanadium
sorption was analyzed with intra-particle, Bangham, Boyd, and liquid film diffusion models. It was
observed that the sorption process was controlled by the film-diffusion as well as the pore-diffusion.
Thermodynamic parameters (change of standard enthalpy (ΔH°), standard entropy (ΔS°), and
standard free energy (ΔG°)) suggested that the sorption of vanadium onto functionalized
nanocomposite was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

AB - Silver as one of the most known precious metal is used on a large scale in various industrial
branches and the release of silver ions from such industrial activities potentially can cause
serious environmental problems. Therefore, the removal of this metal from wastewater is a great
challenge, and it is crucial for the quality improvement of the environment. Porous polymer
materials with high specific surface areas and other specific physical and chemical
characteristics have gained much attention as sorbents in the field of environmental protection.
In this paper, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)
copolymer synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with
diethylenetriamine was employed for silver ions sorption from aqueous solution at unadjucted
pH and room temperature. The sorption kinetics and isotherms were studied to establish the
mechanisms of sorption process. The kinetic data were modeled with pseudo-first-order (PFO),
pseudo-second-order (PSO), Elovich and fractional power (FP) models as well as intraparticle
diffusion (IPD) and liquid diffusion model (LFD), while the equilibrium data were analized
using Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. Eight error functions
such as coefficient of determination (R2
), Marquardt’s percent standard deviation (MPSD), Chisquare statistic test (χ2
), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), the root mean square error
(RMSE), the sum of the errors squared (SSE), sum of the absolute errors (SAE), and average
relative error (ARE) were used to estimate the error deviations between theoretically predicted
and experimental values of sorption capacities. The best kinetic and isotherm models were
determined by normalizing eight error functions and finding the sum of normalized error value
(SNE). The sorption kinetic studies revealed that the sorption of silver by macroporous aminofunctionalized sorbent obeys the PSO kinetic model. In addition, the results indicate that
sorption was governed by intraparticle diffusion with the evident influence of liquid film
diffusion. The obtained results showed that the sorption isotherm data were satisfactorily fitted
to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model.

AB - In the present study, synthesized macroporous copolymer was used for the sorption of lindane
from an aqueous solution. This organochlorine pesticide is classified, according to US EPA, as
mutagenic and teratogenic. Residues of lindane can persist in the environment, migrate long
distances, and cause widespread contamination. In this way, lindane residues can reach the
human body through the food chain. The usage of this pesticide is banned in most countries.
However, lindane remains a serious toxicological problem at industrial sites where lindane was
used coupled with improper wastewater disposal and has led to serious contamination. In
addition, some countries still allow the production and use of lindane, and despite localized
restrictions, lindane contamination remains a global problem. Taking into account these
reasons, its removal from the environment is of a great significance. The obtained macroporous
copolymer was syntesized via suspension copolymerization and was characterized by Fourier
transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The
parameters which affect sorption efficiency of the lindane were: pH, sorption time (tsor), ion
strength (ion), rpm, and dose of sorbent. These variables were optimized by the experimental
design which include Plackett-Burman Design (PBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD).
After screening step by the PBD, the optimum conditions were obtained by the CCD where the
values were investigated in two levels. The design of experiment showed that the ion strength
and dose of sorbent were the most significant parameters, while the other variables do not have
such an effect on sorption efficiency. Accordingly, the optimum conditions to reach the maximum
recovery were: pH 8, 180 min sorption time, 300 rpm, 2 w/v % ion strength and 8 g/l dose of
sorbent. The results showed that the studied copolymer could be an efficient sorbent for trace
lindane in water with recoveries above 80 %.

AB - Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is one of the most notorious pollutants with
health and environmental impacts due to carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic
effects on the human organism.1 Therefore, treating wastewater containing Cr(VI)
before discharge into the aquatic system is extremely necessary. In this study, the
nonlinear regression method was used to determine the kinetic and isotherm
parameters for Cr(VI) sorption from aqueous solution on hexamethylene diaminemodified 177btain177177ous copolymer based on glycidyl methacrylate (PGEHMD).2 The Avrami kinetic model provides the best correlation of the experimental
data with R
2 = 0.994 and χ
2 = 0.004, while the Freundlich isotherm model best
described the Cr(VI) sorption onto PGE-HMD copolymer indicating a heterogenous
sorption process.
