AB - A priori estimation of analyte response is crucial for the efficient development of liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry (LC–ESI/MS) methods, but remains a demanding task given the lack of knowledge about the factors affecting the experimental outcome. In this research, we address the challenge of discovering the interactive relationship between signal response and structural properties, method parameters and solvent-related descriptors throughout an approach featuring quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) and design of experiments (DoE). To systematically investigate the experimental domain within which QSPR prediction should be undertaken, we varied LC and instrumental factors according to the Box-Behnken DoE scheme. Seven compounds, including aripiprazole and its impurities, were subjected to 57 different experimental conditions, resulting in 399 LC–ESI/MS data endpoints. To obtain a more standard distribution of the measured response, the peak areas were log-transformed before modeling. QSPR predictions were made using features selected by Genetic Algorithm (GA) and providing Gradient Boosted Trees (GBT) with training data. Proposed model showed satisfactory performance on test data with a RMSEP of 1.57 % and a of 96.48 %. This is the first QSPR study in LC–ESI/MS that provided a holistic overview of the analyte's response behavior across the experimental and chemical space. Since intramolecular electronic effects and molecular size were given great importance, the GA–GBT model improved the understanding of signal response generation of model compounds. It also highlighted the need to fine-tune the parameters affecting desolvation and droplet charging efficiency.

AB - Artificial sweeteners are receiving increasing attention as newly recognized emerging contaminants that mainly reach the aquatic environment through the discharge of municipal wastewater containing large amount of these compounds. In this study, the impact of raw untreated wastewater discharges on the levels and the water/sediment distribution of artificial sweeteners in the Danube River and its largest tributaries in Serbia was evaluated, and a comprehensive assessment of environmental risks for freshwater and benthic organisms was performed. Acesulfame and sucralose were detected in all river water samples (100%), while saccharin (59%) and cyclamate (12%) were less frequently found, indicating long-term continuous sewage-derived pollution. Aspartame (100%) and neotame (60%) were the only artificial sweeteners recorded in the sediment samples due to their preference to sorb to particulate matter in the water/sediment system. In terms of ecotoxicological risk, a low risk for aquatic organisms was determined at the detected levels of saccharin in river water, while a high to medium risk was found for benthic biota at the concentrations of neotame and aspartame detected in sediments. The largest contribution to the pollution of the Danube River Basin with artificial sweeteners, and consequently the highest environmental risk, was determined in the two largest cities, the capital Belgrade and Novi Sad, which raises the issue of transboundary pollution.

AB - Artificial sweeteners are high-priority emerging contaminants that are widespread in surface waters worldwide as a result of municipal wastewater discharges into the aquatic environment. Given that these substances can cause toxic effects on aquatic organisms, they represent a potential risk for the river ecosystem as a whole. Although sediments have not often been the subject of scientific research on pollution with artificial sweeteners, there is a possibility that these substances pose a risk to sediment-dwelling organisms. Aspartame and neotame are sweeteners that have a high sorption affinity for organic-rich particles and partition to sediment in the water-sediment system. In order to determine the possible risk for benthic biota, an ecological risk assessment of detected aspartame and neotame in sediments from five rivers in Serbia was performed. In addition to the risk assessment of individual sweeteners, “the cocktail effect” of their mixture was also estimated. Detected levels were compared with the lowest predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) values for sediment organisms from the Norman Ecotoxicology Database, based on experimental ecotoxicity data and QSAR model predictions for aquatic organisms.

AB - Municipal wastewater in the Belgrade area is discharged into the Danube and the Sava
Rivers without any treatment. This affects the quality of river water since wastewater is one of the
most important sources of environmental pollutants, including pharmaceuticals. To assess the impact
of this effect, the presence of three commonly used antibiotics in wastewater and receiving river water
was determined. A previously developed liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method
for the analysis of antibiotics in natural water matrices was validated for wastewater and applied in
analysis of samples from the Belgrade area. All investigated antibiotics were detected in both
wastewater and river water samples. The highest concentration of antibiotics in wastewater was
found for sulfamethoxazole, while trimethoprim was detected at the highest level in surface water.
The most frequently detected antibiotic in surface water was azithromycin. The environmental risk
assessment was performed for surface water biota. Azithromycin was found to pose a high risk to
aquatic organisms, while the risk level of sulfamethoxazole was medium or low. In conclusion, the
obtained results show the detrimental impact of untreated wastewater discharge on the river water
quality in the Belgrade area, emphasizing the need for urban wastewater treatment.

AB - Dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) using a floating organic drop has been optimized and used for the sample preparation of four commonly used ultraviolet filter (UVF) substances in sunscreens. Plackett–Burman experimental design was used to screen 10 variables in DLLME. The most significant variables were then optimized by using a response surface method with a Box–Behnken design. DLLME followed by an optimized HPLC identified octocrylene, 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate, ethylhexyl salicylate, and homosalate as the frequently found UVFs in commercial sunscreens. The systemic exposure dosage and margin of safety (MoS) for the identified UVFs were estimated using in-use concentrations and application patterns. The average systemic exposure dosage values for octocrylene, 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate, ethylhexyl salicylate, and homosalate were 0.52, 0.61, 0.020, and 0.079 mg/kg body weight per day, respectively. Whereas the average MoS values for individual UVFs ranging from 296 to 3160 were all significantly higher than the limit value of 100, the combined exposure risks were slightly above the limit. The probabilistic health risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulation revealed that the combined MoS values were (mean, 10‰, 90‰) 342, 119, and 441, respectively. Regarding the usage of sunscreen cosmetics containing the UVFs studied, these results indicate a safety concern for those who apply multiple UVF products.

AB - Carbonaceous solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, efficient in isol-ation and enrichment of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water, was synthesized starting from cheap waste beech sawdust and using KOH as the activated agent. The first step in carbon material preparation was hydrother-mal carbonization of the waste beech sawdust. Following hydrothermal treat-ment, the obtained material was activated, using different amounts of KOH. It was found that applied activation leads to changes in material structure, an inc-rease in specific surface area, and a decrease in the number of surface oxygen groups compared to carbonized sample. SPE procedure of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water using activated carbonized beech sawdust (AcSD) was optimized by selecting the appropriate elution solvents, the sample pH, and the sample volume to obtain the highest enrichment efficiency. The optimized SPE procedure was applied for water analysis using different AcSD samples as a sorbent for analyte preconcentration. Activated carbon sorbent, obtained with the highest amount of KOH, showed the highest recoveries reg-arding the most analytes, which were comparable with the recoveries obtained by commercial cartridges.

abstract = "Carbonaceous solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, efficient in isol-ation and enrichment of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water, was synthesized starting from cheap waste beech sawdust and using KOH as the activated agent. Activated carbon sorbent, obtained with the highest amount of KOH, showed the highest recoveries reg-arding the most analytes, which were comparable with the recoveries obtained by commercial cartridges.",

AB - Carbon materials of different structural and textural properties (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon cryogel, and carbonized hydrothermal carbon) were used as adsorbents for the removal of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol from aqueous solutions. Chemical modification and/or activation were applied to alter surface characteristics and to increase the adsorption and desorption efficiency of carbon materials. Surfaces of treated and untreated carbon materials were characterized through the examination of the textural properties, the nature of surface functional groups, and surface acidity. It was found that the adsorption capacity of tested carbon materials is not directly proportional to the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. However, a high ratio of surface mesoporosity affected the adsorption process most prominently, by increasing adsorption capacity and the rate of the adsorption process. Adsorption of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. Calculated mean adsorption energy values, along with the thermodynamic parameters, indicated that removal of selected hormones was dominated by the physisorption mechanism. High values of adsorption efficiency (88-100 %) and Langmuir adsorption capacities (29.45-194.7 mg/g) imply that examined materials, especially mesoporous carbon cryogel and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, can be used as powerful adsorbents for relatively fast removal of estrogen hormones from water.

AB - Isoamyl 4-methoxycinnamate (IAMC) is an organic compound belonging to UV filters, part of
many cosmetic products that aim to protect human skin and hair from harmful solar radiation.
Numerous studies conducted in recent decades have confirmed the presence of IAMC in the
environmental waters and its toxicity to aquatic species. Low concentrations of this compound
in environmental samples require sample preparation that achieves a high enrichment factor.
Solid-phase extraction (SPE) achieves a high efficiency of extraction of organic compounds
and higher enrichment factor compared to liquid-liquid extractions. In this paper, sample
preparation involves the SPE of IAMC using Oasis HLB cartridges. Several experimental
variables, such as pH value and volume of sample, eluent type, eluent volume, and salt content
were considered during the optimization process. The eluted compound was analyzed using
liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Based on the recovery data,
the optimal parameters of the SPE method were obtained: extraction from 50 mL of the aqueous
sample without added salt, initial pH of the sample set to 8, and dichloromethane/methanol
mixture used as an organic solvent for elution. The optimized SPE procedure is suitable for the
analysis of IAMC in water. The recovery was 98%, and the enrichment factor was 150.

AB - This is the first study of a broad range of chemical classes of emerging contaminants conducted by analyzing influent and effluent samples from the wastewater treatment plant of the city Topola, in Serbia. The list of compounds is extensive and this paper provides a better understanding of the environmental burden from different classes of emerging contaminants. The samples were prepared using an optimized solid-phase extraction method and analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Removal patterns of selected compounds are discussed based on their physico-chemical properties and detected concentrations. Significant removal efficiencies, exceeding 70%, were found for the majority of investigated pharmaceuticals, pesticides, steroids, and sweeteners. Ecotoxicological risk assessment was performed by using two complementary methods: (1) an individual substance approach, based on the calculation of risk quotients (RQs) for each substance as the ratio of Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) and Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC), and (2) mixture risk assessment (“the cocktail effect”) based on the summation of individual RQs. The classical approach (ERA method with individual substances) identified amlodipine as the riskiest substance in WWTP effluent. The mixture ERA approach revealed new risks, which were not recog-nized by the classical ERA method, indicating that individually “safe” emerging compounds can contribute to a significant risk of the whole effluents.

environment. Furthermore, wastewater treatment plants are not sufficient to prevent the
transport of drugs. Microplastics (MPs), which are also recognized as important pollutants,
can be divided into primary and secondary. The primary MPs are produced for commercial
purposes, while the secondary MPs are formed by the decomposition of plastic residues.
The hydrophobic nature and large specific surface area of MPs facilitate pollutants
binding. Animals misunderstand MPs for food and consume it, which could have harmful
health impacts because both MPs and adsorbed pollutants are ingested. In this paper, the
adsorption of the selected drugs - azithromycin, carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, and
diclofenac on low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyamide (PA), and poly(ethylene
terephthalate) (PET) microplastics are presented. The experiment showed that drugs bind
best to PA and that azithromycin has the highest binding affinity.

komercijalne svrhe, a sekundarna nastaje razgradnjom plasticnih ostataka. Hidrofobna

AB - Mass use of plastics in the consumer lifestyle has caused a problem that the inventors of these
polymers could not anticipate. Over the last 50 years, world plastic production has doubled.
Plastic particles larger than 2.5 cm in diameter are called macroplastics. The types of
degradation that affect the decay of macroplastics are photodegradation, microbiological and
thermo-oxidative degradation. Macroplastics that are exposed to mentioned external factors
break into smaller pieces that scientists today call microplastics. Microplastics (MPs) are
defined as any piece of plastic with a diameter of 100 nm to 5 mm; particles smaller than 100
nm are called nanoplastics. MPs are all around us, there are in cosmetic products, the fibers of
our clothes, the water we drink, and the food we eat. The recent understanding of MPs as
pollutants present in the environment has become a global concern and has resulted in intensive
research in this area. Knowledge of MPs is limited, but researchers are increasingly examining
their properties and environmental impact. Recent studies have shown that various water
pollutants can be adsorbed on MPs, therefore MPs may also play a role as vectors for harmful
substances.
In this paper, the adsorption of the selected hormones – estrone, 17β-estradiol, 17α-ethinyl
estradiol on low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and
polyamide (PA) microplastics are presented. Selected hormones are among the most frequently
detected endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the aquatic environment. It is shown that among
selected estrogens, 17β-estradiol has the highest affinity for binding to MPs.

AB - Solid-phase extraction (SPE) of eleven ultraviolet filters (UVFs): benzophenone-1 (BP-1); benzophenone-3 (BP-3); benzophenone-4 (BP-4); isoamyl p-methoxycinnamate (IAMC), homosalate (HMS); 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-HB); 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC); octocrylene (OC); octyl dimethyl-p-aminobenzoate (OD-PABA); 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC); and avobenzone (AVO), has been optimized using Plackett-Burman design, Box-Behnken design, and Derrindzer desirability function. Of the six SPE variables studied, the most influencing is the type of eluent followed by pH and the methanol content in the rinsing solvent. A method with good analytical performance was obtained by applying optimal SPE conditions and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), with the method detection limit ranging from 0.1 to 5 ng/L, recovery from 44% to 99%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) within 19%. This method was used to analyze the content of UVFs in an urban lake (Sava Lake, Serbia). UVFs occurrence, geostatistical distribution, and associated environmental risk are highly dependent on recreational activities. The average concentrations of UVFs ranged from 0.3 to 113 ng/L, and the most present substance was EHMC, followed by 4-MBC and BP-3. The spatial distribution of the risk quotient (RQ = 0.04–1.7) inside the lake is highly correlated with the number of people bathing and swimming. Human exposure through the dermal pathway is higher than ingestion for most UVFs. Monte Carlo simulation of probabilistic risk assessment estimated the percentile P10, P50, P90 of 12.7; 17.3; 47.5 and 20.1; 27.6; 77.5 ng/kg∙day for total human exposure of adults and children, respectively. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the health risk estimate depends mostly on the content of EHMC, HMS, and 4-MBC, while the most influential exposure variables were human body weight and skin surface area. There is no serious concern to human health due to UVFs in the short term; however, a high ecological risk in some parts of the lake is estimated.

Beograda, Novog Sada, Velike Morave i Peka.
izolovanje i koncentrisanje.

abstract = "Prisustvo estrogenih hormona u vodenim ekosistemima posledica je ispuštanja
Beograda, Novog Sada, Velike Morave i Peka.
izolovanje i koncentrisanje.

AB - Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were employed as a sorbent for solid-phase extraction of estrogen hormones (estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol) from water solution. The solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized by choosing an appropriate mass of the sorbent, volume, and initial pH of hormone water solution, as well as by choosing an appropriate organic solvent for extraction. Based on the obtained hormone recoveries, the following SPE conditions were chosen as optimal: 100 cm3 of hormone water solution at initial pH adjusted to 10; 20 mg of the sorbent; and methanol-dichloromethane mixture as elution solvent. Recoveries obtained under the optimal conditions ranged from 70.56 % for estrone, to 81.23 % for 17α-ethinylestradiol, with a relative standard deviation from 9.92 to 18.74 %.

AB - Glavni put dospevanja lekova u životnu sredinu su komunalne otpadne vode. U regionu

U poslednjih nekoliko godina, organski UV filteri izazvali su značajnu zabrinutost zbog stalnog korišćenja, upornog unosa i potencijalne pretnje ekološkom okruženju i ljudskom zdravlju.
AB - The main ingredients of skin protection products from UV radiation are UV filters. In the last few years, organic UV filters have caused significant concern due to constant use, persistent intake, and potential threats to the environment and human health. Numerous studies warn of the stability, bioaccumulation, as well as toxic effects of these compounds on aquatic organisms. The environmental risk assessment of UV filters was performed based on data from the literature related to the results of monitoring of these substances in water and sediments, as well as based on data on their toxicity to aquatic organisms. The highest concentrations of selected organic UV filters were detected in wastewater, as well as at the points of wastewater discharge into the recipient. Risk assessment has shown that these compounds pose a potential threat to aquatic organisms. The analysis of data from several locations determined a high environmental risk due to the presence of certain UV filters in the aquatic environment and showed that the locations near the wastewater discharge are particularly endangered.

AB - Artificial sweeteners have been recognized as high-priority emerging contaminants that cause great concern due to unknown environmental behavior and long-term ecotoxicological impact on water resources. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove these pollutants and consequently they are continuously introduced into the aquatic environment. This paper describes investigation of four artificial sweeteners, highly abundant in urban wastewater, and their removal rate in wastewater treatment plants in Serbia, in order to assess the efficiency of the treatment to reduce their environmental inputs. For this purpose, influent and effluent wastewater samples from two treatment plants were extracted and analyzed using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry.

AB - Artificial sweeteners are synthetic substances that are used to achieve the sweet taste of
food products, and their application in the Republic of Serbia is regulated by the national
guidelines on food additives. After ingestion, the largest percentage of these compounds passes
unchanged through the human body and reaches the environment through municipal wastewater. In
the last decade, studies have shown the widespread use of artificial sweeteners in surface and
groundwater. Due to limited data on their toxicity to wildlife in the water, as well as on their
behaviour in aquatic ecosystems, they are classified as emerging contaminants.
This paper describes the analysis of widely used sweetener cyclamate by liquid chromatography
with tandem mass spectrometry in untreated urban wastewater of Belgrade to assess the presence
and input of this compound into the environment. The results obtained by analysing four
wastewater samples from different sewage channels in Belgrade show the presence of cyclamate in
the concentration range of 4.3 µg L
–1
–23.2 µg L–1
. Since Belgrade does not have a wastewater
treatment plant, high levels of cyclamate indicate the continuous contamination of aquatic
ecosystems in Serbia and the potential danger to wildlife in the water.

AB - In the city of Belgrade, raw sewage is discharged directly into the Sava and the Danube rivers affecting the quality of river water. To determine the level of this impact, eight frequently used and detected pharmaceuticals were selected for the study. A previously developed method for analysis of pharmaceuticals in different water matrices was used. Sample extracts were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, using the electrospray ionization technique. The most commonly detected analytes in both municipal wastewater and surface water were carbamazepine, known for its high environmental stability, and diclofenac, known as having high acute ecotoxicity. The dilution effect, noted for most of the detected drugs, was not as pronounced with diclofenac, indicating a higher risk for aquatic organisms.
