AB - Breaking news are usually disturbing. Natural disasters, wars, epidemics, etc., are reported as breaking news. This paper reports a decreased danger of spreading of epidemics caused by the JN.1 variant, since analyses indicate that infectivity of the new variant is decreased compared to most earlier variants, which is confirmed by the number of cases (7500 daily in USA). Moreover, JN.1, despite the great number of mutations, has not been able to achieve the values of Gibbs energy change of biosynthesis (and thus virus multiplication rate) of the Hu-1 wild type. The research shows that infectivity and pathogenicity of the JN.1 variant has not reached worrying size, which means that there is no reason to expect the epidemiologic situation getting worse.

AB - Pertussis (whooping cough) has been nearly eradicated during the 20th century, first of all due to an organized and comprehensive vaccination campaign that lasted for decades. Generations of doctors educated in Serbia (and other countries) rarely had an opportunity to see the clinical picture of pertussis. However, during 2023, the number of registered cases of pertussis in Serbia has increased several times. This is why the health authorities were forced to declare danger of an epidemic. During 2023, in Belgrade, around 1000 cases were registered. During the two months of 2024, 400 cases were registered. Some of them have ended with lethal outcome. This paper reports for the first time the biosynthesis reaction and thermodynamic properties of biosynthesis (enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy) of Bordetella pertussis, the cause of whooping cough. Moreover, a mechanistic model of multiplication of B. pertussis was developed. The mechanistic model was related to the pathogenesis of pertussis.

AB - Every microorganism represents a biothermodynamic system, characterized by an empirical formula and thermodynamic properties of biosynthesis. Gibbs energy of biosynthesis influences the multiplication rate of a microorganism. In case of a mixed culture (microbial consortia) biosynthesis processes of microbial species are competitive. This is why Gibbs energy of biosynthesis determines the growth in a mixed culture. This paper gives a mechanistic model that explains growth of microorganisms in mixed culture and ability to grow in microbial consortia. Detailed biosynthesis reactions were formulated for the first time for five microorganism species, which include metallic elements. Moreover, thermodynamic properties of live matter and biosynthesis were calculated for the first time for five microorganism species and macromolecules.

AB - A series of bimetallic Sn-Pd catalysts were prepared by a template-free two step electrodeposition method. According to this method, Sn was electrodeposited firstly in potentiostatic or galvanostatic regime on Cu electrodes in the form of dendrites, then Pd was galvanostatically electrodeposited in the second step on the electrode with the electrodeposited Sn dendrites. The produced Sn-Pd electrocatalysts were compared with an electrocatalyst obtained by Pd electrodeposition on a bare Cu electrode. The morphological and elemental analysis of Sn-Pd and Pd electrocatalysts was performed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The dendrites of various shapes and degree of branching were obtained by Sn deposition depending on electrodeposition regime, while Pd was electrodeposited in a form of compact Pd islands on both Sn dendrites and the Cu electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was applied for the electrochemical examination of Sn-Pd and Pd catalysts towards the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in the alkaline solution. The electrocatalyst Sn0.6-Pd0.4 with an atomic ratio of 60 at.% Sn-40 at.% Pd showed higher oxidation efficiency and better tolerance towards intermediate species in EOR than the other examined electrocatalysts. It was shown that the lower fraction of Pd, relative to Sn, was crucial to achieving optimal synergy of Sn with Pd thus contributing to enhanced electrochemical behavior regarding EOR.

AB - The synthesis and adsorption potential of Cy-npAg, obtained by modification of raw montmorillonite clay (raw-Cy) with silver nanoparticle (npAg), was studied in this work. Optimization procedure, with respect to time, temperature and amount of deposit npAg, obtained either by reductive precipitation or ultraviolet irradiation, was performed using response surface methodology (RSM). The most efficient adsorbent, obtained by chemical reduction of silver ion with sodium borohydride, named Cy-npAg, was characterized in detail using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques, and point of zero charge determination. The Cy-npAg showed good adsorption capacity with respect to non-systemic organophosphate insecticide (diazinon) as well as of heavy metals ions (Cd2+ and Ni2+ ions), that is, 74.26, 62.33, and 35.49 mg g(-1), respectively, obtained from Langmuir model fitting. Temperature dependent kinetic study allowed determination of pseudo-second rate constant (10(3) g mg(-1) min(-1))/activation energies (kJ mol(-1)): 1.45/14.48 for diazinon, and 1.27/6.59 and 0.7/7.35 kJ mol(-1) for Cd2+ and Ni2+ ions, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters indicated feasible and spontaneous adsorption with main participation of physisorption. Antibacterial potential of npAg deposit for water disinfection was confirmed by the moderate reduction of bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, by 64%, 39%, and 70%, respectively. Thus, two synergistic effects contribute to water purification processes using Cy-npAg: pollutants removal with a simultaneous decrease of the microbial contamination contributing to overall water quality improvement.

AB - Biochemistry coupled with electrochemical approach is employed in a fast, relatively simple, yet highly precise detection of a plant extract antioxidant properties. Antioxidant capacity of dark red corn grains was investigated electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV) on glassy carbon electrode (GC). The linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements were performed for examining the corrosion inhibitive behavior of polyphenolics on mild steel. The consistent positive correlation (r=0.99) was established between total phenolic and flavonoid contents obtained by CV measurements and spectrophotometric antioxidant assay (DPPH test). Both analyses confirm the high antioxidant activity of tested pigments. Determination of the corrosion inhibition efficiency revealed that the red corn pigments have anti-corrosion effect on mild steels.

AB - The paper analyses the corrosion behaviour of both naturally and artificially aged AA2024 aluminium alloy in NaCl solution in the presence of the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA). The differences between these two aging tempers in terms of resistance to general corrosion are explained as well as the differences in terms of pit formation and pit growth. Based on the values of the polarisation resistance and the corrosion current density, the general corrosion resistance of the alloy is determined in the absence and in the presence of BTA. The resistance to pit formation and pit growth is determined on the basis of the polarisation measurements results. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the expected differences in the appearance and size of the pits formed in naturally aged and artificially aged alloy. In the presence of the corrosion inhibitor BTA, for both aging tempers of the alloy, the corrosion resistance is significantly higher compared to the resistance in the solution without the inhibitor. The value of the polarisation resistance for both aging tempers increases over time. However, at the same time, the value of the constant phase element increases as well. An explanation for this phenomenon is provided. The calculated average value of the thickness of the adsorbed inhibitor layer on the surface of the aluminium alloy is in accordance with the inhibitor protective ability for both aging tempers. AB - In this research, catalytic properties of Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst synthesized by aerosol impregnationmethod were examined in the dry methane reforming process. First, reticulated ceramic foamswere impregnated by ultrasonically nebulized solution of corresponding chlorides and dried. Thecatalyst was activated by direct hydrogen reduction, without calcination, at only 533 K. Thereforming test was carried out at temperatures of 873, 973 and 1023 K. Since CO and H2 are themain products of the dry methane reforming, yields of those gasses were measured and obtainedresults were a base for conclusions about selectivity, activity and stability of the catalyst.Acknowledgement: This work was financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Scienceand Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, Project No. TR - 34033.
