AB - Yttrium manganite, YMnO3, was doped with different concentrations of titanium (x = 0, 0.04, 0.08, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) in order to improve the microstructural and multiferroic properties. The powders were prepared using sol-gel polymerization complex method from citrate precursors. Depending on the titanium concentration, the hexagonal structure and/or the rhombohedral superstructure are present in the sintered samples. The YMn1–xTixO3+δ (x = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) ceramic samples showed significantly reduced density of microcracks, and of inter- and intragranular pores, and relative densities greater than 90%. The structural parameters for YMn1–xTixO3+δ (x = 0, 0.10, 0.15) were correlated with the results of magnetic and ferroelectric measurements. The most of titanium-doped samples showed a reduction of the leakage current density in comparison with undoped YMnO3, and their ferroelectric responses were slightly improved. The modifications in structural arrangement resulted in partial suppression of ideal antiferromagnetic ordering visible through decrease of the Néel temperature and Weiss parameter, as well as the appearance of weak ferromagnetism and increase of magnetization (especially, in samples x = 0.08, 0.10, 0.15). These changes in physical quantities most likely originated from incorporation of the uncompensated magnetic moments and possible spin canting induced by enhanced symmetry break of the superexchange bridges.

AB - Antimony doped barium-stannate dense ceramic materials were synthesized using spark plasma sintering technique out of mechanically activated precursor powders. The influence of various Sb concentrations (x = 0.00 - 0.10) on properties of BaSn1-xSbxO3 ceramics was investigated. Relative densities of prepared samples were in the range of (79-96) %. TEM analysis revealed the presence of many dislocations in undoped BaSnO3, and their significant reduction upon doping with Sb. All samples except BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 exhibit non-linear I-U characteristic, typical for semiconductors with potential barrier at grain boundaries. Low angle grain boundaries found only in BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 caused the loss of potential barrier at grain boundaries which was confirmed by AC impedance spectroscopy measurements. Consequently, BaSn0.92Sb0.08O3 showed the lowest electrical resistivity and linear I-U characteristic. UV-vis analysis confirmed the increasing of band gap (Burstein-Moss shift) values in all doped samples.

AB - This work presents the fabrication of humidity sensor based on SnO2 sensing material derived by the nanocasting process using hydrothermally obtained KIT-5 as a hard template.
In a typical wet impregnation process, the infiltration of Sn precursor into mesoporous silica KIT-5, and later evaporation of the solvent were conducted to fill pores to 15 % of the template pore volume. The calcination and removal of the template were performed to obtain the desired mesoporous SnO2. The obtained powder (P) was mixed with a 10 % ethyl-cellulose in α- terpineol solution (S) and acetic acid (A) in the weight ratio P:S:A=7:69.7:23.3 to form a homogeneous paste which was further deposited by doctor blade technique onto alumina substrate with screen printed Pt/Ag electrodes. The film was subjected to a specific drying regime and finally calcined at 550 °C for 5 h.
The obtained SnO2 nanoparticles as well KIT-5 template were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Cross section and surface morphology of SnO2 film were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The humidity sensing properties of the mesoporous SnO2 sensor were investigated in a JEIO TECH TH-KE-025 temperature and humidity climatic chamber in the range 30–90 % RH. Complex impedance spectra of the as-fabricated sensor were analyzed at room temperature and 50 °C with a HIOKI 3532-50 LCR HiTESTER in a frequency range 42 Hz - 1 MHz.
Nitrogen adsorption isotherms of KIT-5 showed high specific surface area of 610 m2g-1 and average pore diameter of 5.2 nm while those values for SnO2 sample were 33 m2g-1 and 19.9 nm respectively. Even though that mesoporous ordering of nanocasted negative replica was observed by TEM, the presence of agglomerates in SnO2, as well as the relatively low specific surface area of 33 m2g-1, confirm its partial degradation. Diffraction patterns from TEM display well-defined rings typical for cassiterite SnO2. The impedance measured at 42 Hz, at room temperature, and in the range 40-90% RH reduced 509 times, while at 50 °C it reduced 48 times. The sensor exhibited quick response (5 s) and recovery time (16 s) when it exposed to humidity change from 37% RH to 90% RH, and relatively low hysteresis of 3.2% observed at 40% RH and at room temperature showing its promising capacity as a humidity sensor.

AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 degrees C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm(2) provided ceramics samples with"the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)-O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger Fe-O-Fe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - Zinc oxide nanopowders were synthesized by the sol-gel method from an ethanol solution of zinc acetate dihydrate. Detailed structural and microstructural investigations were carried out using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses, as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The intermediate compound of the reaction was layered zinc hydroxide acetate that further transforms into hexagonally shaped ZnO crystalline nanoplates (d(m) = 4 nm), which aggregate into larger spherical particles. According to the TEM analysis the ZnO nanoparticles were self-assembled into larger particles with the same orientation, i.e. aligned lattice planes of the particles. A further solvothermal treatment resulted in hexagonal, prismatic ZnO mesocrystals.

abstract = "Zinc oxide nanopowders were synthesized by the sol-gel method from an ethanol solution of zinc acetate dihydrate. A further solvothermal treatment resulted in hexagonal, prismatic ZnO mesocrystals.",

AB - Lanthanum nickel oxide (LaNiO3) is an electrically conductive ceramics, which has a potential use as electrode for ferroelectric thin films, multilayer actuators and many other electronic devices. In this work, LaNiO3 thin films were prepared by a modified Pechini process, based on polymeric citrate precursors. DTA analysis of the precursor solution showed that formation and crystallization of LaNiO3 were completed up to 790 degrees C. Films were deposited using spin-on technique and thermally treated in temperature range 600-800 degrees C, with heating rate of 1 degrees/min. Processing parameters, such as concentration and annealing temperature, as well as number of deposited layers were optimized to achieve desired film quality. The structure of LaNiO3 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, whereas microstructural parameters, such as grain size and roughness, were analyzed by AFM.
