AB - The paper presents the results of a comparative study on accelerated aging of specially designed experimental transformers and their corresponding laboratory models. The experimental transformers are 300 kVA, with insulation in line with medium size and large mineral oil immersed power transformers, having different initial water contents in the standard Kraft paper insulation of ca. 1 and 4 %. These transformers were subjected to the rated current and voltage conditions, operating in the irregular parallel operation, whereby the temperature of windings were measured with fiber optics sensors and kept at 105 C for 460 days. Each transformer was equipped with a removable tank which allowed access to the outer surface of the HV windings. Laboratory experiments were simulating experimental transformers and were performed in Erlenmeyer flasks, containing oil, paper materials, copper and iron in the same proportions as in the active part of the experimental transformers. The parameters that were monitored during aging were the following: degree of polymerization of paper, hot-spot temperature of transformers, water content in paper, and water and furans content in the oil. Estimations of water content in solid insulation of experimental transformers using frequency domain spectroscopy and the Perrier-Lukic moisture equilibrium chart were performed. The experimental results show that shortening of the insulation life, defined by the value of degree of polymerization, increased 2.5 times with increasing moisture content in the cellulose from ca. 1 to 4 %. For both experimental transformers and laboratory models, the relationships between the paper degree of polymerization and the furans content for dry and wet insulation was developed and is presented in the paper.

AB - This paper deals with the heat generation in the Al alloy Al2024-T3 plate under different rotating speeds and plunge speeds during the plunge stage of friction stir welding. A 3-D finite element model is developed in the commercial code ABAQUS/Explicit using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation, the Johnson- Cook material law, and Coulomb’s Law of friction. The heat generation in friction stir welding can be divided into two parts: frictional heat generated by the tool and heat generated by material deformation near the pin and the tool shoulder region. Numerical results obtained in this work indicate a more prominent influence from the friction-generated heat. The slip rate of the tool relative to the workpiece material is related to this portion of heat. The material velocity, on the other hand, is related to the heat generated by plastic deformation. Increasing the plunging speed of the tool decreases the friction-generated heat and increases the amount of deformation-generated heat, while increasing the tool rotating speed has the opposite influence on both heat portions. Numerical results are compared with the experimental ones, in order to validate the numerical model, and a good agreement is obtained.

AB - The paper illustrates the structural assessment of an investigated pressure vessel, made of low-alloyed high strength steel, with an external surface crack located on the shell wall. In order to assess the remaining strength and the resistance to stable crack growth, the J-integral is experimentally measured at operating temperature of -40°C. The compared crack driving force and material resistance to crack growth have determined the size of the zone of stable crack development, as well as the critical crack length. Also given is the pressure vessel calculation code by applying the theory of finite elements to linear-elastic material behaviour. Critical pressure values are calculated by analytical and numerical procedures and show good agreement.
Kritične vrednosti pritisaka izračunate analitičkim i numeričkim postupkom pokazuju dobro slaganje.

AB - From a fracture mechanics point of view on welded joints, it is assumed that the welded joint is pre-cracked such as that the fatigue life of the pre-cracked structure is then determined by the period of crack growth under variable load. Experimental data obtained by testing provide a substantial basis for a better understanding and an explanation of the phenomenon of material fatigue. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) occurs during the process of charging and discharging of reactors, pressure vessels and pipelines; the fatigue can be accelerated by an additional negative effect of temperature variation and the aggressive effect of the media contained inside the vessel, and during the exploitation of the equipment in the processing industry. In the present paper the results are presented of J-integral measurements at LCF of a low-alloyed high strength steel (HSLA) weld metal used in the submerged arc welding process in the manufacture of pressure vessels.

AB - To avoid unexpected and frequent serious failures of objects and equipment in service, and save their structural integrity, proper experimental and theoretical analyses are required, that are supported by modeling and numerical analysis. Structural failures in service have been experienced and can not be neglected. The developed procedures, based on fracture mechanics, enable to predict behaviour of a crack in a fracture process and to evaluate the safety and reliability of a structure under the applied loading in an operating environment. Regarding the significance of structural integrity, objects are classified into three groups. In the first group are objects made of stone, not sensitive to cracking, as are the preserved monuments of the ancient era. The second group includes objects prone to fracture from cracks: in this case structural integrity assessment is a requirement in order to prevent failure. In the third group are modern engineering achievements as are very large buildings (e.g. Burj Khalifa), and nano-sized objects. They both require, involving new aspects, the consideration of functionality and reliability, in addition to safety. Several examples are presented here and discussed for each group.

In the third group are modern engineering achievements as are very large buildings (e.g. Burj Khalifa), and nano-sized objects. They both require, involving new aspects, the consideration of functionality and reliability, in addition to safety. Several examples are presented here and discussed for each group., Da bi se izbegli neočekivani i često ozbiljni otkazi u radu objekata i opreme i sačuvao integritet konstrukcija potrebne su odgovarajuće eksperimentalne i teorijske analize, podržane modeliranjem i numeričkom analizom.

AB - The structural integrity and operational safety of welded pressure vessels primarily depends on the behaviour of weldments. In spite of all efforts in material production and improvements in welding techniques, including strict codes, requirements and directives, the crack occurrence in welded structures cannot be completely excluded. This is why fracture mechanics analysis is inevitable in the structural integrity assessment of all welded structures. Examples of practical application of fracture mechanics parameters in cracked pressure vessel structural integrity are considered. This paper shows the determination of parameters of the fatigue crack for constituents of welded joints produced of high strength low alloyed steel Nionikral-70 (yield strength 700 MPa). Results have shown that the position of notch and crack initiation affect the values of the stress intensity range of fatigue threshold DKth and parameters in the Paris' equation.

AB - The load carrying structure of belt conveyors, a system with excessive elastic properties of its parts, is subjected to complex loads of dynamic character. Assessment of state of the drive and conveyor structure is possible only based on certain investigations in operating conditions. This paper presents results of tensometric measurements of deformations for various load regimes on belt conveyor drive drum shaft. Thereupon, on the basis of the obtained stress-time dependence, the functions of stress distribution and corresponding loading spectra are defined that enable a quantitative estimation of structural component behavior in the range of material fatigue strength. Also, it is shown how results of the measurements may be used for evaluating the lifespan of driving speed reducer elements. .
