AB - Numerous structural components made of high strength low-alloyed steels are often exposed to low-cycle fatigue loading during their exploitation life. In order to study the fatigue behavior of one grade of structural steels produced in Yugoslavia during the eighties of the last century, a push-pull constant amplitude strain-controlled fatigue tests were conducted at room temperatures. This paper analyses behavior of two different materials, parent steel (PM) and its coarse-grained (CG) simulated heat-affected zone (SHAZ) exposed to the action of low-cycle fatigue (LCF) loading performed in the range from 1 to 10(4) cycles. LCF tests were conducted at strain ratio R = -1 at strain amplitude range from 0.3% to 0.8%. The materials' Coffin-Manson parameters appearing in the strain-life and cyclic stress-strain curves were calculated. Fracture surface analysis of both materials was done. The results showed that plasticity under dynamic load conditions is satisfactory for both materials which give them good resistance to crack initiation and propagation.

AB - This paper presents a method for estimating the residual-strength of welded pressure vessel made of HSLA steel which contains a surface axial crack. In order to analyze the behavior of the structure, a set of specimens were extracted from the welded plates using the same welding procedure as used for welding of the vessel. Before the fatigue precracking, the notches were positioned in parent material, heat-affected zone and weld metal of standard bend specimens. The J-integral resistance curve method for residual strength prediction comprises the following steps: 1. Obtaining of root J(R) resistance curves for the pressure vessel material using convenient specimens; 2. Obtaining root J crack driving force curves for the investigated structure for different crack sizes and different levels of applied stresses by applying the appropriate model of plasticity (Dugdale model); 3. Determination of the instability point as the tangency point between the crack driving force curve and the resistance curve. J-resistance curve of welded joint constituents were determined at -40 degrees C using a single specimen compliance procedure.

AB - The paper analyses the impact of the tool geometry on the friction stir welding (FSW) method on fracture toughness values of the base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM) of a butt welded joints of a high strength aluminium alloy. Values of fracture toughness were obtained using single-edge notched bend (SENB) specimens with fatigue pre-crack sampled from the BM and TMAZ (thermo-mechanically affected zone). Single specimen method was used according to ASTM E 1820 and parameters of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics were determined (CTOD crack tip opening displacement and the J integral). Although the welding tools had different values of cone angle (α = 2.5° - 10°) and the variable length of the pin (h = 5.1 mm - 5.4 mm) at a constant ratio of the number of tool revolutions and the speed of welding, the largest value of fracture toughness has the retreating side of the weld, then the advancing side of the WM, while the BM has the lowest value. This is the effect of recrystallization process in the retreating side of the WM due to combined rotating-straight forward motion of the tool during which the softened material is repeatedly transformed from one side to the other side around the centre of the tool.

AB - The subject of this paper is the microstructural and mechanical characterisation of regions of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in steels containing 9-12% Cr that are used for operation at elevated temperatures. Tests were performed on regions in the HAZ, which was created by physical simulation using a thermal welding simulator. Half of the simulated samples (SSs) were tested at room temperature (RT) and at an operating temperature (OT) of 600 degrees C immediately after simulation/welding, while the rest of the simulated samples were tested at RT and at the OT after heat treatment following the welding, i.e., post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). In addition to the results from mechanical testing, the results from microstructural analysis using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are also presented. The manner in which PWHT contributes to the creep resistance of the HAZ in P91 steel is demonstrated.

The most significant cracks can be induced by welding, which is applied for joining of Structural components. Pressure equipment in service is also exposed to high pressure and high stresses. Materials for their manufacturing are designed to resist high stress at elevated temperature, and to meet requirements regarding creep resistance. The objective of this study is to investigate microstructure of different regions of the heat affected zone in T/P91 steels by using thermal simulation instead of welding.

AB - The structural integrity and operational safety of welded pressure vessels primarily depends on the behaviour of weldments. In spite of all efforts in material production and improvements in welding techniques, including strict codes, requirements and directives, the crack occurrence in welded structures cannot be completely excluded. This is why fracture mechanics analysis is inevitable in the structural integrity assessment of all welded structures. Examples of practical application of fracture mechanics parameters in cracked pressure vessel structural integrity are considered. This paper shows the determination of parameters of the fatigue crack for constituents of welded joints produced of high strength low alloyed steel Nionikral-70 (yield strength 700 MPa). Results have shown that the position of notch and crack initiation affect the values of the stress intensity range of fatigue threshold DKth and parameters in the Paris' equation.

AB - In this investigation we look at the influence of the local residual stresses caused by Vickers-pyramid indenting on the initiation and early propagation of small cracks from indentations in coarse-grain martensitic steel. The size of these indentations is comparable to the grain size. Specimens with and without a local residual stress field were tested on a rotary bending machine. A focused ion beam and a scanning electron microscope were used to reveal the influence of those stresses on the location of the cracks' initiation and the mechanism of the small-crack propagation. The existing local residual stresses assist in the initiation of two cracks at a level lower than the fatigue limit. The early small-crack propagation is gradually obstructed by the residual stress-field configuration until the cracks become non-propagating cracks. At levels higher than the fatigue limit, both cracks succeed in breaking through the compressive stressed domain and link together. From that moment the crack begins to behave as a long crack, penetrating outside the indentation into the tensile-stressed domains.

AB - The joints made by fusion of materials are exposed to the influence of residual stresses induced by welding thermal cycles. Residual stresses were measured on butt welded plates made of NIOMOL 490K, before and after reparation. The objective of this paper is to compare three methods of residual stress measurement (hole-drilling method, x-ray diffraction and directional effective permeability) induced by two welding processes (Submerge Arc Welding and Transferred Ionized Molten Energy) of V-butt welded plates. The residual stresses values are higher after reparation than before reparation of welded joints.

AB - Global warming leads to research-development attempts worldwide with a view to reduce CO2 emission. Therefore, in the energy supply sector, a special focus has been directed to further development of steels that can endure the ultra-supercritical steam conditions. Our article presents the basic study on weldability of the advanced 9-12% chromium steel applying the thermomechanical simulation of the heat affected zone (HAZ). The changes of microstructures and material properties of HAZ before and after postweld heat treatment (PWHT) have been analyzed and compared by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hardness measurements, and impact toughness testing. Microstructures at representative points during typical welding cycle and PWHT were studied in details.
