AB - The defects in pipe elbows can, depending on their size and position, affect the integrity and safe service, as well as deformation ability of the piping systems in exploitation. Incompletely filled groove, which is the type of defect examined here, was observed by ultrasonic measurement on the pipeline in the regulation system of the hydro power plant Djerdap. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed using Simulia Abaqus software package. First, the models with dimensions of the defects observed by non-destructive examination are formed. Stress and strain fields for different loading types are shown and commented. The influence of the defect dimensions on the pipe elbow load-carrying capacity is determined through plastic collapse loads, which are obtained from bending moment - rotation angle diagrams. Twice elastic slope (TES) technique is applied. Additionally, some more severe defects are considered, in the form of sharp pre-cracks at the bottom of the defect; plastic collapse loads are also determined for these geometries. Both opening and closing bending moments are taken into consideration and the results are discussed and compared to two closed-form solutions from the literature. The influence of the boundary conditions applied for examination of the pipe elbows is
commented.

AB - Topic of this work is the integrity assessment of the pipeline section from hydropower plant Pirot. Crack-like defect size, maximum depth, is determined based on non-destructive evaluation - the largest crack depth is taken as the initial value for load carrying capacity estimation. Also, the crack dimensions (both length and depth) are varied. Limit pressure values are determined from 3D and 2D models of pipes with axial cracks on external surface. The influence of tensile loading on the load carrying capacity of the pipes with circumferential cracks is also examined. Integrity of pipes with both types of defects (axial and circumferential) is assessed through application of FAD diagrams.

AB - In this work, the structural and mechanical properties of friction stir welded dissimilar butt joints of AA2024-T351 to AA5083-H112 aluminum alloys were evaluated. Plates of 6 mm thick were friction stir welded with optimized tool. In the first case, plate of AA2024 was positioned on the advancing and plate of AA5083 was on the retreating side of the weld. In second case, position of the plate was opposite. Specimens were welded using rotation rate of 750 rpm and welding speed of 73 and 93 mm/min. Specimens were defect free, with good or acceptable weld surface. The effects of rotation and lateral speed of the welding tool were related to structural features and mechanical properties. The structural appearances of concentric rings in the nugget zone were controlled by tool speed and plate position. Structural analysis of the joint cross-section, revealed the distinct lamellar bands. The joints consistently failed on the AA5083 aluminum alloy plate. Failures were observed through the heat-affected zone at distance of approximately 21 mm from weld center.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the combined effect of small difference in pin geometry, together with rotation and welding speed on the weldability, mechanical and structural properties of FSW 2024-T351 Al plates. The only difference in tool pin design was the shape of thread: regular and rounded. Specimens were welded using rotation rate of 750 rev/min and welding speeds of 73 and 93 mm/min. Specimens were defect free, with good or acceptable weld surface, in all four cases. Modification in pin design showed strong influence on macro structure and hardness distribution. Weak places are identified as low hardness zone, close to the nugget zone and are in good agreement with fracture location in tensile testing. Weld efficiency, as a measure of weld quality, is better in case of 310 tool, while UTS values can differ up to 13% for the equal welding parameters. Therefore, it can be assumed that small modification in tool design, particularly in pin geometry, can have great influence on weld formation and mechanical properties.

AB - This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis of the change of temperature and force in the vertical direction during the friction stir welding of high-strength aluminium alloy 2024 T3. This procedure confirmed the correctness of the numerical model, which is subsequently used for analysis of the temperature field in the welding zone, where it is different to determine the temperature experimentally. 3D finite element model is developed using the software package Abaqus; arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation is applied. Johnson-Cook material law and Coulomb's Law of friction are used for modelling the material behaviour. Temperature fields are symmetrical with respect to the welding line. The temperature values below the tool shoulder, i.e. in the welding zone, which are reached during the plunge stage, are approximately constant during the entire welding process and lie within the interval 430-502 degrees C. The temperature of the material in the vicinity of the tool is about 500 degrees C, while the values on the top surface of the welding plates (outside the welding zone, but close to the tool shoulder) are about 400 degrees C. The temperature difference between the top and bottom surface of the plates is small, 10-15 degrees C.

abstract = "This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis of the change of temperature and force in the vertical direction during the friction stir welding of high-strength aluminium alloy 2024 T3. The temperature difference between the top and bottom surface of the plates is small, 10-15 degrees C.",

AB - The influence of R/v ratio on joint quality in 2024-T351 aluminum alloy was studied. Specimens were subjected to friction stir welding with the rotation rates of 750, 950 and 1180 r/min and welding speed between 73 and 190 mm/min, providing R/v ratio between 5.00 and 10.27. The welded joints were tested by means of both non-destructive (visual, penetrant and X-ray inspection) and destructive (metallographic, tension and hardness) testing. In all specimens typical zones are revealed, with corresponding differences in grain size. Tensile efficiency of the joints obtained is in the range of 52.2% to 82.3%. The results show that the best quality is obtained at R/v ratio of 8.06, 10.17 and 10.27. This behavior is attributed to the assumption that the material flows around the pin with an optimal speed, i.e. sufficient amount of material is available to fill the gap and prevent tunnel formation. R/v ratio also showed influence on hardness distribution, onion features and crack initiation/propagation zones.

AB - Since local defects reduce the load-carrying capacity and deformation ability of a piping system, an analysis is undertaken to quantify the influence of weld defects on integrity of the pipe elbows subjected to internal pressure. Incompletely filled groove is examined, because this type of defect was previously detected by ultrasonic measurement on the inner surface of the pipeline from a hydro-power plant. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is conducted using Abaqus software package. The influence of weld defect geometry (its depth, length and location) on the elbow integrity is determined. Additionally, decrease of load carrying capacity is determined for the case when a crack has initiated at the bottom of the defect. The influence of finite element type (hexahedral or tetrahedral) is examined.

AB - The aim of this work was to establish the influence of initial state of base metal on properties of mma welded 14MoV 6 3 steel. Three combinations of specimens were welded: (i) virgin-virgin (N-N); (ii) used-used (S-S); (iii) virgin-used (N-S). Used specimens were 52000 hours in exploitation. It has been established that the fracture is initiated in the zone of used part. It is assumed that the critical conditions were achieved as the consequence of creep induced grain growth and particle coarsening. On the other hand, testing of unused specimens revealed the highest level of strength.

AB - In this paper microstructural and mechanical properties of high-carbon steel surface welded layer obtained with self-shielded flux cored wire are presented in standard rails and crossings. The testing results of tensile characteristics, hardness, toughness via instrumented Charpy pendulum, microstructural analysis and fatigue crack growth resistance of all characteristical zones are analyzed in detail, especially from the point of view of interaction between microstructure and properties. The obtained results indicate superior properties of repaired welded layers, which is due to their similarity to the new generation of bainitic steel, i.e., due to the change of microstructure from original pearlitic structure to final bainitic structure. Finally, fatigue crack growth parameters have shown that deposite layer has higher resistance than the crack growth, improving overall reliability of rails and crossings.

AB - Results of the experimental and numerical comparative analysis of steamline pipes have been presented. New pipes and the pipes used for more than 117,000 hours at 540 degrees C under pressure of 42 bars have been simultaneously tested. This testing has been carried out because frequent failures of the equipment components exposed to elevated temperatures, Such as steam pipelines, make it necessary to pay particular attention to the analysis of the materials used. The most frequent failures were those connected with occurrence of cracks, particularly expressed in case of steel 14MoV6 3. Local approach to fracture has been developed for complete understanding of fracture mechanism. This approach combines theoretical, experimental and numerical solutions.

AB - Formability of welded austenitic stainless steel (321 type) - low carbon steel (1010 type) sandwich sheet material was tested. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and shield metal arc welding (SMAW) procedures were used. After applying the GTAW welding process the weld metal hardness was found considerably higher than after using the SMAW process, due to a higher consumable fraction in case of the GTAW welding procedure. The bendability of the tested weldments appeared to be satisfying, but the biaxial stretch ability of the welded sandwich sheets was considerably lower compared to the base material (33% - 45% degradation). The stretch ability degradation brought by welding was found the lowest in the samples welded by the lowest heat energy input. The strain distribution after equibiaxial stretching of the welded sheets was very inhomogeneous due to different hardening abilities of the base and weld metal.

The strain distribution after equibiaxial stretching of the welded sheets was very inhomogeneous due to different hardening abilities of the base and weld metal., U radu su prikazani rezultati ispitivanja deformacionog ponašanja zavarenih spojeva platiranih (sendvič) limova nerđajućeg čelika (klase 321) niskougljeničnog čelika (klase 1010).

AB - Investigation and analysis of the phenomena during rotational friction welding process of the high speed steel M2 (AISI SAE) with quench and tempered carbon steel 1060 (AISI SAE) are presented. Welding parameters as time and friction pressure are varied in experiments. Also different post weld heat treatment (PWHT) regimes, as annealing and quenching are applied. Distribution of the carbon and carbide phases in period of friction during the process of rotation friction welding process and after PWHT and effects on weld quality are analysed. Investigations are performed by the classical and quantitative optical microscopy. Displacement and distribution of carbides in the high speed steel during friction period in viscous layer, than in friction plane and surrounding zones are studied. Results of the quantitative optical microscopy are showed distinct difference of the carbide phase ratio in investigated zones. Obtained results are verified by the EDS analysis of characteristic zones close to the friction plane. Results of the SEM analysis are shown difference in the carbide phase quantity close to the friction plane as a result of the metal flow in viscous layer and in the viscous - plastic zones, with presence of hard carbide particles, and also of the carbide phase dissolution. Beside optical microscopy investigations, effects of the welding parameters and PWHT on carbon and carbide distribution are analysed by the measuring of the micro hardness and mechanical properties which are tested in friction plane. Obtained results have shown direct dependence between welding parameters and applied PWHT on the properties and quality of the friction welded joints.

AB - In the paper ductile fracture initiation analysis of low-alloyed ferritic steel has been made by application of two micromechanical models: the Rice-Tracey void growth model and the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model. The aim of the study was to analyse transferability of micromechanical parameters determined on specimens without initial crack to pre-cracked specimens. A significant part of the research has been carried out through participation in the round robin project organised by the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS). Tensile tests have been performed on cylindrical smooth specimens and CT specimens. Critical values of micromechanical parameters determined on smooth specimen for both applied models, have been used for prediction of the crack growth initiation in CT specimen. Modelling of the first phase of ductile fracture-void nucleation-has been carried out using quantitative metallographic analysis of non-metallic inclusion content in tested steel. For determination of critical values of model parameters corresponding to ductile fracture initiation a simple procedure has been applied based on a combination of experimental and numerical results. Evaluated J-integral values corresponding to onset of crack growth, J(i), are in good agreement with experimental result and both models have proved to be suitable for determination of the ductile fracture initiation in tested steel. The effect of FE size at a crack tip on J(i)-value has been particularly analysed: it has been established that the calculation with FE size corresponding to the mean free path), between inclusions in steel gives results that are in accordance with the experimental ones.

AB - In the presented paper a micromechanical model based on a particular flow criterion of a porous solid has been applied. In this study crack initiation in the smooth specimen made of steel 22 NiMoCr 3 7 has been analyzed; the micromechanical model was incorporated into the finite element (FE) program. Initial data related to non-metallic inclusions were determined by the quantitative optical microscopy. The study was performed within the scope of ESIS TC8 Numerical Round Robin on Micromechanical Models, Phase II, Task A.... .

Micromechanism of ductile fracture initiation: Void nucleation and growth

AB - Micromechanism of ductile fracture of most metals and alloys includes void nucleation, growth and coalescence. The voids nucleate at the second phase particles and non-metallic inclusions. Application of so-called global criteria of fracture mechanics such as COD and J-integral in characterization of ductile fracture onset does not provide satisfactory results for all cases of external loading. The problems arising in solving the phenomenon of severe plastic strain at crack tips and application of the results obtained to describe behaviour of various structures of different geometry are not insignificant. In present paper micromechanical model based on a particular criterion of flow in a porous solid has been applied. The model was initially established by Gurson, and later on modified by Tvergaard and Needleman. Unlike traditional flow criteria (for instance, with metals widely applied Von Mises criterion), established flow introduces volume fraction (f) variable. Through application of this model, by combining experimental and numerical procedures, an effort is made to predict ductile fracture of metals. In present paper fracture initiation of smooth specimen has been analyzed; described model was incorporated into finite element (FE) program, so that one of the results for each Gauss point may be void volume fraction as well. Probably the most difficult part of such a characterization of ductile fracture is to present physically void nucleation as accurately as possible. An approach to void nucleation, suggested by Chu and Needleman, has been discussed in this paper; the model is based on hypothesis that void nucleation follows a normal distribution of void formation predominantly around coarser non-metallic inclusions in steel. It is particularly problematic to examine secondary voids nucleation around smaller non-metallic inclusions and second phase particles, and to realize their effects on further growth of the existing (primary) voids, and especially on their coalescence resulting in fracture. This has been accompanied by adequate metallographic analysis of non-metallic inclusions and their volume fraction, which represents starting results for elastic-plastic analysis of a porous solid using FE method. The results obtained suggest that applied micromechanical model can be used for characterization of initiation of ductile fracture in steel on geometries -without precracks, and that metallurgical analysis is necessary to describe physically the first phase - void nucleation. Special contribution should represent application of the results obtained with a simple geometry to the precrached structures, which should be confirmed in work to follow. .

Special contribution should represent application of the results obtained with a simple geometry to the precrached structures, which should be confirmed in work to follow. .",
