Influence of inhibitors on the corrosion behavior of the X5CrNi18 10 stainless steel-welded joint

AB  - This study considers the corrosion behavior of the X5CrNi18 10 stainless steel-welded joint in NaCl solution, with and without the presence of several corrosion inhibitors (NaNO3, Ce(NO3)(3), and CeCl3). The degree of sensitization of the welded joint to intergranular corrosion is determined using the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation method with a double-loop method. Pitting corrosion tests are performed by the potentiodynamic method. Resistance to general corrosion and the stability of the passive film is assessed based on the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, as well as on the values of the corrosion and passivation current. The main goal of this study is to determine the relation of the welded joint microstructure to general and pitting corrosion in the presence of the corrosion inhibitors. The value of pitting potential for the base metal and weld metal in the presence of the NaNO3 or Ce(NO3)(3) inhibitor is shifted to potentials in the transpassive area. The pitting potential for the heat-affected zone also possesses a noticeable higher value. However, nitrate ions do not increase the general corrosion resistance of any part of the welded joint. CeCl3 does not increase resistance to general or pitting corrosion.

Resistance to Pit Formation and Pit Growth for Different Tempers of AA2024 Aluminium Alloy in Presence of Benzotriazole

AB  - The paper analyses the corrosion behaviour of both naturally and artificially aged AA2024 aluminium alloy in NaCl solution in the presence of the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA). The differences between these two aging tempers in terms of resistance to general corrosion are explained as well as the differences in terms of pit formation and pit growth. Based on the values of the polarisation resistance and the corrosion current density, the general corrosion resistance of the alloy is determined in the absence and in the presence of BTA. The resistance to pit formation and pit growth is determined on the basis of the polarisation measurements results. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the expected differences in the appearance and size of the pits formed in naturally aged and artificially aged alloy. In the presence of the corrosion inhibitor BTA, for both aging tempers of the alloy, the corrosion resistance is significantly higher compared to the resistance in the solution without the inhibitor. The value of the polarisation resistance for both aging tempers increases over time. However, at the same time, the value of the constant phase element increases as well. An explanation for this phenomenon is provided. The calculated average value of the thickness of the adsorbed inhibitor layer on the surface of the aluminium alloy is in accordance with the inhibitor protective ability for both aging tempers. Failures of Brass Condenser Tubes

AB  - Causes of failure of brass condenser tubes (CuZn28Sn1) in a thermal power plant in Serbia are analysed. Results of testing by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have indicated the presence of ammonia and nitro- gen compounds on fracture surfaces and on the inner surface of the tubes. These compounds are specific agents that cause stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in brass. Analy- sis of fracture surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has shown the brittle transgranular fracture due to the occurrence of SCC. The resistance of brass condenser tubes to other types of corrosion, such as erosion, general and selective corrosion (dezincification) is also considered. Some procedures are proposed to reduce the risk of SCC in the brass condenser tubes.
AB  - Analizirani su uzroci pojave loma kondenzatorskih cevi od mesinga CuZn28Sn1 u jednoj termoelektrani u Srbiji. Rezultati ispitivanja metodom Furijeove transformisane infracrvene spektroskopije (FTIR) ukazuju na prisustvo amonijačnih i azotnih jedinjenja na površini loma i na unutrašnjoj površini cevi. Ta jedinjenja su specifični agensi za pojavu naponske korozije mesinga. Analiza površine loma primenom skening elektronske mikroskopije (SEM) pokazala je prisustvo krtog transkistalnog loma nastalog usled pojave naponske korozije. Razmatrana je otpornost cevi od mesinga CuZn28Sn1 prema drugim vidovima koro- zije, kao što su eroziona, opšta i selektivna korozija (decin- kacija). Predloženi su postupci za smanjenje rizika od pojave naponske korozije u kondenzatorskim cevima.

AB  - The influence of corrosion on the surface appearance and microstructure of particulate ZA27/SiCp composites was examined after 30 d immersion in a sodium chloride solution with the access of atmospheric oxygen. The composites with different contents of SiC micro-particles were synthesized via compo casting. Microstructural studies by means of optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that corrosion occurred in the composite matrices, preferentially in regions of the. phase, rich in zinc. The corrosion processes did not affect the silicon carbide particles incorporated in the matrix alloy. According to the results of electrochemical polarization measurements, an increase in the content of SiC particles in the composite matrice has led to the lower corrosion resistance in the composites.

Stress corrosion cracking resistance of aluminum alloy 7000 series after two-step aging

AB  - The effect of one-step and a new (short) two-step aging process on the resistance to stress corrosion cracking of an aluminum alloy 7000 series was investigated, using slow strain rate test and fracture mechanics method. The aging level in the tested alloy was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy and measurements of electrical resistivity. It was shown that the alloy after the new two-step aging is significantly more resistant to stress corrosion cracking. Values of tensile properties and fracture toughness are similar for both thermal states. Processes that take place at the crack tip have been considered. The effect of the testing solution temperature on the crack growth rate on the plateau was determined. Two values of the apparent activation energy were obtained. These values correspond to different processes that control crack growth rate on the plateau at higher and lower temperatures.
AB  - Ispitivan je uticaj jednostepenog i novog (kratkotrajnog) dvostepenog termičkog taloženja na otpornost prema naponskoj koroziji aluminijumske legure serije 7000, primenom metode male brzine deformacije i metode mehanike loma. Stepen starenja ispitivane legure je procenjen primenom skening elektronske mikroskopije i na osnovu merenja električne otpornosti. Pokazano je da je legura posle novog dvostepenog termičkog starenja znatno otpornija prema naponskoj koroziji. Vrednosti zateznih karakteristika i žilavosti loma su slične za oba termička stanja legure. Razmatrani su procesi koji se odvijaju na vrhu naponsko-korozione prsline. Određen je uticaj temperature rastvora za ispitivanje na brzinu rasta prsline na platou. Određene su dve vrednosti prividne energije aktivacije. Ove vrednosti odgovaraju različitim procesima koji kontrolišu brzinu rasta prsline na platou, na visokim i niskim temperaturama.

AB  - Corrosion properties of an aluminium alloy 7000 series were investigated by different electrochemical methods. The alloy was subjected to the one-step and to a new two-step precipitation hardening. Polarization measurements in the 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution have shown a more positive value of the pitting potential (Epit) and a higher corrosion resistance for the two-step aged alloy. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has also shown that the two-step aged alloy has better corrosion properties (higher value of polarization resistance, Rp, and lower value of double-layer capacitance, Cdl) comparing to the one-step aged alloy.
AB  - Otpornost prema koroziji aluminijumske legure serije 7000 ispitivana je primenom različitih elektrohemijskih metoda. Legura je bila podvrgnuta jednostepenom i novom dvostepenom termičkom taloženju. Polarizaciona merenja u 3,5 mas.% NaCl su pokazala da legura posle dvostepenog termičkog taloženja ima pozitivniju vrednost potencijala pitinga (Epit) i veću otpornost prema koroziji. Spektroskopija elektrohemijske impedancije (SEI) je takođe pokazala da legura posle dvostepenog termičkog taloženja ima bolju otpornost prema koroziji (veću vrednost polarizacione otpornosti, Rp i manju vrednost kapacitivnosti dvojnog sloja, Cdl) u poređenju sa legurom posle jednostepenog termičkog taloženja.

AB  - The influence of corrosion on the microstructure of thixoformed and heat-treated ZA27 alloys was investigated. The microstructure of ZA27 alloy was affected by heat treatment. The process of electrochemical corrosion occurs in both ZA27 alloys through the area of eta phase. According to the results of immersion test and electrochemical measurements, the corrosion rate of the thixoformed ZA27 alloy is at least 50% lower than that of the thixoformed and thermally processed alloy. This indicates the unfavourable influence of applied heat treatment (T4 regime) on the corrosion resistance of the thixoformed ZA27 alloy.

AB  - Abstract: The corrosion tendency in the 7000 series aluminium alloys changes depending on the content of alloying
elements, thermal and thermo-mechanical treatments, etc. An alloy of this type applied in the production of weapons
and military equipment has been investigated by applying different electrochemical methods. A degree of the
precipitation hardening (aging) of the alloy has been evaluated by measuring its electrical resistivity. The corrosion
potential measurements (Ecorr.) gave information about the distribution of the alloying elements between the solid
solution and the precipitation phases. The polarization measurements, performed in the 0.5 M NaCl solution, have
shown a more positive value of the pitting potential (Epit.) and a greater corrosion resistance for the two-step aged
alloy. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has also shown that the two-step aged alloy has better
corrosion properties (a higher value of polarization resistance, Rp, and a lower value of capacitance, Cdl) comparing to
the one-step aged alloy. These results enable a deeper insight into the effects of both heat treatment and alloying
elements, primarily copper, on the corrosion resistance of the tested alloy.

AB  - Opisani su osnovni mehanizmi naponske korozije različitih metala i legura i njihovih zavarenih spojeva. Detaljnije su
razmotreni metalurški i korozioni uslovi nastanka naponske korozije ugljeničnih i niskolegiranih čelika, a posebno
njihovih zavarenih spojeva. Najveća pažnja u ovom radu je posvećena razmatranju naponske korozije nerđajućih
čelika (austenitnih, martenzitnih, feritnih i dupleks nerđajućih čelika) i posebno njihovih zavarenih spojeva. Značajna
pažnja je takođe posvećena naponskoj koroziji aluminijumskih legura serije 2000 (Al-Cu-Mg), 5000 (Al-Mn, Al-Mg-Mn)
i 7000 (Al-Zn-Mg-(Cu)), dok je naponska korozija zavarenih spojeva kod legura bakra, legura titana i legura nikla
samo ukratko razmotrena.

AB  - U radu su razmotrene metode ispitivanja naponske korozije metala i legura i njihovih zavarenih spojeva. Opisani su
principi tih metoda, postupci izvođenja, oblasti primene, kao i prednosti i nedostaci pojedinih metoda. Shematski su
prikazani tipični rezultati koji se dobijaju njihovom primenom. Posebna pažnja je posvećena metodama ispitivanja
naponske korozije zavarenih spojeva. Opisane su klasične metode ispitivanja statički opterećenih glatkih uzoraka (Cprstenovi,
uzorci na savijanje itd.), kao i savremene metode kao što je metoda male brzine deformacije (SSRT) i
metode zasnovane na principima mehanike loma. Navedeni su odgovarajući standardi (ISO i ASTM) za njihovo
izvođenje, kao i preporuke za sprečavanje naponske korozije zavarenih spojeva različitih metala i legura.
