AB  - U ovom radu je ispitana mogućnost dobijanja kompozitnog tekstilnog materijala na bazi PET
tkanine, polipirola i nanočestica TiO2 sa efikasnom fotokatalitičkom aktivnošću. Prisustvo PPy/TiO2
kompozitnog sloja na površini vlakana je potvrđeno FE-SEM i EDS analizom. Fotokatalitička
aktivnost PET tkanine obrađene polipirolom i nanočesticama TiO2 kao i PET tkanine obrađene
samo nanočesticama TiO2 ispitana je u vodenom rastvoru boje C.I. Acid Orange 7. Rezultati
ispitivanja fotokatalitičke aktivnosti su pokazali da uzorak modifikovan polipirolom i nanočesticama

TiO2 potpuno degradira boju za samo 120 minuta osvetljavanja lampom koja simulira sunčevo
zračenje dok je uzorku modifikovanom nanočesticama TiO2 za to potrebno 24 h. Takođe je utvrđeno
da kompozitni uzorak PET+PPy/TiO2 pokazuje odlična fotokatalitička svojstva u drugom i trećem
ciklusu fotodegradacije. Znatno bolja fotokatalitička aktivnost kompozitnog uzorka u odnosu na
PET tkaninu modifikovanu nanočesticama TiO2 je upravo posledica prisustva polipirola.

Biodegradation of cotton and cotton/polyester fabrics impregnated by Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles

AB  - This study was aimed to elucidate the biodegradation behaviour of cotton and cotton/PET fabrics 
impregnated with Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles in soil. Biodegradation behaviour was assessed according to 
standard test method ASTM 5988-03 and soil burial test, where the extent of biodegradation was 
estimated by the calculation of fabric weight loss. The morphology of fibres affected by biodegradation 
was analysed by SEM. 
The results indicated that Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles inhibit the biodegradation of investigated cotton and 
cotton/PET fabrics. As expected, biodegradation of cotton fabric was considerably more pronounced 
compared to cotton/PET fabric. Larger inhibition of biodegradation of cotton fabrics impregnated with 
Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles compared to impregnated cotton/PET fabrics was not only due to the poor 
biodegradability of PET, but also because of significantly larger content of Ag in the cotton fabric. 
Severe damage of cotton fibres during the biodegradation process was also confirmed by SEM.

AB  - This study was aimed to highlight the possibility of in situ generation of Ag nanoparticles on polyester fabric by photoreduction of Ag+ ions with deposited TiO2 nanoparticles in the presence of amino acid alanine and methyl alcohol. The presence of TiO2/Ag nanoparticles on the polyester fibers was proved by XRD, XPS and SEM analyses. Such nanocomposite textile material provides extraordinary antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli, Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus and fungus C. albicans. Maximum microbial reduction was maintained after ten washing cycles. Despite good laundering durability, the leaching of silver occurred during washing. Silver release was also detected during the 24 hours long incubation at 37o C in artificial sweat at pH 5.5 and 8.0. In addition to excellent antimicrobial properties, TiO2/Ag nanoparticles provided maximum UV protection to polyester fabrics.

AB  - The aim of this study was to compare the effects of corona discharge at atmospheric pressure and air RF plasma at low pressure activation of cotton fabrics prior to deposition of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles in order to enhance antibacterial, UV protective and photocatalytic properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis proved the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of cotton fibres. Atomic absorption spectroscopy measurements demonstrated that content of TiO2 in the cotton fabrics pre-treated by corona and RF plasma was 31 % higher than in the fabric that did not undergo any treatment prior to loading of TiO2 nanoparticles. In order to obtain maximum reduction of Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, untreated cotton fabric had to be loaded with colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles twice, but only once following the corona or air RF plasma pre-treatment. Loading of cotton fabrics with TiO2 nanoparticles ensured maximum UV protective rating of 50+. Excellent photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited onto cotton fabrics was confirmed by photodegradation of dye methylene blue in aqueous solution under UV illumination.

In order to obtain maximum reduction of Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, untreated cotton fabric had to be loaded with colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles twice, but only once following the corona or air RF plasma pre-treatment. Loading of cotton fabrics with TiO2 nanoparticles ensured maximum UV protective rating of 50+. Excellent photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited onto cotton fabrics was confirmed by photodegradation of dye methylene blue in aqueous solution under UV illumination.",

Namely, encouraging results on the effects of TiO2 and Ag NPs separately applied to textile materials in our previous studies were the basis for an assumption that combined treatment with Ag and TiO2 NPs may bring multifunctional textile nanocomposite materials with desirable UV protective and antimicrobial effects. The antimicrobial activity of differently modified PES fabrics was tested against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli, Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus and fungus C. albicans. The efficiency of UV blocking was evaluated by determining the UV protection factor (UPF) of PES fabrics. The effect of Ag NPs on the photoactivity of TiO2 NPs deposited onto the PES fabrics was tested by degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution under UV illumination. The total content of Ag and Ti in the PES fabrics was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The morphology of PES fibers was followed by SEM.

The order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading affects the antimicrobial efficiency of PES fabrics. The fabrics provide maximum UV protection independently of the order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading. Ag NPs positively influenced the photodegradation activity of TiO2 NPs and total photodegradation of methylene blue under UV illumination was achieved after 24 h.

AB  - The aim of this study was to highlight the possibility of using the air RF plasma for fiber surface activation that can facilitate the deposition of silver nanoparticles from colloid onto the polyester fabrics and thus, enhance their antibacterial properties. The deposition of silver nanoparticles caused significant morphological changes as well as the color change of polyester fabrics. Untreated polyester fabrics and polyester fabrics activated by air RF plasma, both, subsequently modified by silver nanoparticles exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli and Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus. However, polyester fabrics activated by plasma provided better laundering durability of achieved effects.

AB  - This study was aimed to examine the possibility of using RF plasma at low pressure for the surface activation of polyester fabrics in order to improve the binding efficiency of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles. Colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized without stabilizers by acid hydrolysis method. Air and argon were used as plasma gases. Polyester fabrics modified by RF plasma and TiO2 nanoparticles exhibited excellent antibacterial efficiency against E. coli which was preserved after five washing cycles. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles contributed to a significant increase in UV protection factor (UPF) of fabrics. These values correspond to UPF rating of 50+, which designates the maximum UV protection. Additionally, irradiated polyester fabrics loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles demonstrated satisfactory self-cleaning efficiency.

AB  - This study is aimed to highlight the possibility of using a corona treatment for fiber surface activation, which can facilitate the loading of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles onto the polyester fabrics and thus improve their antibacterial and self-cleaning properties. The results indicate that the antibacterial efficiency against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli is highly affected by the nature of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles. Illuminated polyester fabrics loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles exhibit satisfactory self-cleaning properties efficiency.

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of hemp fabrics loaded with colloidal Ag nanoparticles. The influence of initial concentration of Ag colloids on the antimicrobial efficiency of hemp fabrics against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and fungus Candida albicans was examined. Despite the small amount of Ag in the fabrics after loading from colloids, hemp fabrics exhibited excellent antimicrobial efficiency.
