AB - In this study six samples of polyurethane/p-aramid multiaxial fabric forms (Colon fabrics) were coated with 10 wt.% poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution with the addition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The solution was impregnated on both sides of each of the fabrics. All composite samples consisted of four layers of the impregnated fabrics. The MWCNT/PVB content was 0, 0.1 and 1 wt.%. The three samples of the fabrics with different MWCNT/PVB content were coated with y-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (AMEO silane)/ethanol solution due to the surface modification. The mechanical properties of the prepared composite samples were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The 60% increase in storage modulus was achieved by addition of MWCNT and impregnation of aramid fabrics with AMEO silane. The pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were introduced in order to enhance additionally the mechanical properties of the materials for ballistic protection.

AB - Many of modern technologies require materials with unusual combinations of properties that cannot be met by the conventional metal alloys, ceramics, and polymeric materials. Material property combinations and ranges have been extended by the development of composite materials. Development of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite magnetic materials has significantly increased interest in research and development of bonded magnets, since particles of Nd-Fe-B alloys are proved to be very suitable for their production. This study investigates the mechanical and magnetic properties of compression molded Nd-Fe-B magnets with different content of magnetic powder in epoxy matrix. Mechanical properties were investigated at ambient temperature according to ASTM standard D 3039-00. The obtained results show that tensile strength and elongation decrease with an increase of Nd-Fe-B particles content in epoxy matrix. The modulus of elasticity increases, which means that in exploitation material with higher magnetic powder content, subjected to the same level of stress, undergoes 2 to 3.5 times smaller deformation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of sample surfaces and fracture surfaces caused by the tensile strength tests. The results of SQUID magnetic measurements show an increase of magnetic properties of the investigated composites with increasing content of Nd-Fe-B particles.

AB - The aim of this study was to assess the irritant properties of a new developed calcium phosphate ceramic, α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) after single application to intact skin of the rabbit. The test substance, α-TCP was produced by modified hydrothermal method and prepared in two different forms, as a solid material (disc 5 x 2 mm) and paste. Both, solid material and paste of α-TCP were evaluated for primary skin irritation to the ISO 10993-10:2002/Amd 1:2006 Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices - Part 10. At the end of the study macroscopic examination of the skin was performed. In this model, general and local tolerances were good. Score of primary irritation (SPI) and primary irritation index (PII) of α-TCP for both, solid material and paste, revealed that there was no significant toxicity/irritability (PII = 0.0) as compared to the negative control (PII = 0.0). Positive control did cause significant skin irritation in acute irritation test using Draize technique in rabbit model (PII = 2.11). Based on present results, it can be concluded that the the irritation potential of the tested material is negligible. However, other procedures for preclinical safety assessments of the α-TCP material are needed in order to completely elucidate its toxic potential.

AB - Calcium phosphate ceramics are among the more commonly used and biocompatible ceramics. Recently, we have synthesized a new calcium phosphate ceramic, alpha tricalcium phosphate (aTCP). The aim of this study was to assess the biocompatibility of this original, in our laboratory modified, newly synthesized aTCP ceramic, by carefully evaluating the inflammatory reaction of soft tissue in response to its subcutaneous implantation, and by comparing this result with the results of already widely used virtually non-toxic, non-immunogenic, and almost chemically inert dental (DC) and hydroxy apatite (HAP) ceramics. Implants (diameter 5x2 mm) of aTCP, DC and HAP were implanted into 12 adult male rats subcutaneously. At 2 weeks and 12 weeks post-implantation, the animals were euthanized and the tissueimplant reactions were analyzed histologically. Evaluation of routine stained sections (5 μm, hematoxylin & eosin) of the cutis and subcutis surrounding the aTCP, DC and HAP ceramics revealed the following: 1) all the ceramic devices had fibrous connective tissue capsules; 2) there were significant differences in the tissue - implant reactions based on the estimated time, while there were no differences in the tissue-implant reaction based on the type of ceramic material; 3) two weeks after implantation hyperemia and cellular proliferation were the most expressive results, while twelve weeks after implantation extensive angiogenesis and collagen fibers production were the prominent findings for all types of implanted calcium phosphate ceramics.

AB - Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used as materials for implants, because of their mechanical properties and nontoxic behaviour, but unfortunately, are bioinert. In order to solve this problem, the metal implant could be coated with bioactive materials with good adhesion to metal and could be also bonded interfacially to the bone. The aim of this work is to investigate the synthesis of functionally graded glass-apatite coating on Ti6A14V alloys by the electrophoretic method. In order to enhance bioactivity of the surface, nanostructured hydroxyapatite particles were embedded in the glass coating. The influence of synthesis condition such as deposition voltage and time on the coating properties and deposit weights were examined. It was shown that controlling the deposition voltage and time, the deposition weight and thickness of coating could be controlled. It was shown that electrophoretic deposition can be successfully employed for the preparation graded glass-apatite coating on Ti6A14V substrate.
