Study of structural and optical properties of YAG and Nd:YAG single crystals

AB  - Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) and yttrium aluminum garnet doped with neodymium (Nd:YAG) single crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique. The critical diameter and the critical rate of rotation were calculated. Suitable polishing and etching solutions were determined. As a result of our experiments, the transparent YAG and pale pink Nd:YAG single crystals were produced. The obtained crystals were studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy. The crystal structure was confirmed by XRD. The 15 Raman and 17 IR modes were observed. The Raman and IR spectroscopy results are in accordance with X-ray diffraction analysis. The obtained YAG and Nd:YAG single crystals were without core and of good optical quality. The absence of a core was confirmed by viewing polished crystal slices. Also, it is important to emphasize that the obtained Nd:YAG single crystal has a concentration of 0.8 wt.% Nd3(+) that is characteristic for laser materials.

Primary and secondary dendrite spacing of Ni-based superalloy single crystals

AB  - Ni-based superalloy single crystals were grown by different methods (gradient method and Bridgman technique with spontaneous nucleation and with seed). In all crystal growth experiments using the Bridgman technique, the temperature gradient along the vertical furnace axes was constant (G = 33.5°C/cm). The obtained single crystals were cut, mechanical and chemical polished, and chemically etched. Using a metallographic microscope, the spacing of the primary and secondary dendrites was investigated. The dendrite arm spacing (DAS) was determined using a Quantimet 500 MC. The obtained results are discussed and compared with published data.

The plane-to-cellular-to-dendrite transition of the shape of the crystallization front during the crystallization of Al-Cu alloys

AB  - The evolution of the crystallization front from a planar to a dendritic one as a function of the G L/(Rc 0) parameter was investigated during the crystallization of Al-Cu alloys by the vertical Bridgman method. Six series of alloys with different initial compositions of Cu were solidified at different growth rates. A mathematical model for the heat transfer during vertical Bridgmen crystal growth was developed. The model was solved using the finite element method. The temperature gradient in the melt at the beginning of crystal growth was calculated using the obtained model. Discrete stages of the crystallization front were identified in the experiments, as the ratio G L/(Rc 0) decreased.
AB  - U okviru ovog rada ispitivana je transformacija fronta kristalizacije od ravnog ka dendritnoj strukturi kao funkcija parametra GL/(Rc0) pri kristalizaciji legure Al-Cu metodom vertikalni Bridgman. U tom cilju izvedeni su eksperimenti sa šest serija uzoraka različitih početnih koncentracija i različitim brzinama rasta. Izveden je i matematički model procesa rasta kristala metodom vertikalni Bridgman korišćenjem metode konačnih elemenata. Na osnovu matematičkog modela izračunat je temperaturni gradijent u rastopu u trenutku kada započinje rast kristala. U okviru eksperimentalnog opsega sa sniženjem vrednosti parametra GL/(Rc0) dolazi do postepenog razvoja fronta kristalizacije po etapama.

The growth of ruby single crystals

AB  - Ruby (Cr:Al2O3) single crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique in an argon atmosphere. The critical crystal diameter dc = 1.0 cm and the critical rate of rotation ωc = 20 rpm were calculated by equations of the hydrodynamics of the melt. The rate of crystal growth was experimentally obtained to be 2.7 mm/h. For chemical polishing, conc. H3PO4 at 593 K for an exposure of 3 hours was determined. Conc. H3PO4 at 523 K for an exposure of 3 h was found to be a suitable etching solution. The lattice parameters a = 0.47627(6) nm and c = 1.301(1) nm were determined by X-ray powder diffraction. The obtained results are discussed and compared with published data.

AB  - Results presented in this paper contribute to investigation of the influence of solidification rate (R) and the initial concentration of solute (C-o) on the interface shape and the distribution of the solute. Solidification of Al-Cu alloy was performed using Vertical Bridgman method. Within the range of experimental solidification rates, the change of interface shape from planar to cellular has been observed and investigated. According to distribution of the solute, the k(e) (Cu) was calculated for each solidification rate and k(e) as a function of R was presented.

AB  - In this paper investigation of the influence of the solidification conditions on the interface shape and distribution of solute during the solidification of AI-Cu alloy by vertical Bridgman method were investigated. The microstructure of the samples was metallographically investigated. Optical emission spectrometry was used for chemical analysis of distribution of the solute concentration along the specimen. Within experimental range of growth rates the plane-to-cellular and cellular-to-dendrite transition was observed. According to the distribution of the solute along the sample, the effective distribution coefficient kc was calculated, and by observing its value, the influence of growth rate (R) on the distribution of the solute in solid was investigated.

AB  - Influence of the solidification rate, temperature gradient and initial concentration of the solute on the interface shape was investigated during solidification from the melt. The dependence of the microstructure on the parameter G/(RC0) was observed. As the value of G/(RC0) was lowered the shape of the interface was changed from the plane to the cellular and than to the dendrites. Specific microstructure correspond to the particular range of the G/(RCo) value.
AB  - Ispitivan je uticaj brzine očvršćavanja, temperaturnog gradijenta i početne koncentracije rastvorljive komponente na razvoj oblika granice faza tokom očvršćavanja iz rastopa. Uočena je zavisnost mikrostrukture uzoraka od parametra G/(RC()). Sa opadanjem vrednosti ovog parametra dolazi do postepene promene oblika granice faza od ravne, preko ćelijske do dendritne. Odredjenom opsegu vrednosti parametra G/(RC0) odovara i odredjena mikrostruktura.

The growth of sapphire single crystals

AB  - Sapphire (Al2O3) single crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique both in air and argon atmospheres. The conditions for growing sapphire single crystals were calculated by using a combination of Reynolds and Grashof numbers. A critical crystal diameter dc = 20 mm and the critical rate of rotation ωc = 20 rpm were calculated from the hydrodynamics of the melt. The value of the rate of crystal growth was experimentally found to be 3.5 mm/h. According to our previous experiments, it was confirmed that three hours exposures to cone. H3PO4 at 593 K was suitable for chemical polishing. Also, three hours exposure to cone. H3PO4 at 523 K was found to be a suitable etching solution. The lattice parameters a = 0.47573 nm and c = 1.29893 nm were determined by X-ray powder diffraction. The obtained results are discussed and compared with published data.

AB  - So far, in our work aimed at obtaining single crystals of a Ni based superalloy, we have investigated the possibilities of obtaining single crystals using different methods as well as the influence of growth conditions, seed structure and abrupt changes in the growth rate (from lower to higher and from higher to lower) on the structure of the obtained single crystals. Using our experimental data, we have made an attempt to show whether there is a dependence between the growth rate (R), temperature gradient (G) and the distance between the primary dendrites (lambda(1)) of the following type lambda(1)=A.G(-m).R-n, and to establish the value of n. We have commenced a research on the influence of the growth rate, and its change during the experiment, on the distance between the secondary dendrites (lambda(2)) and their shape and size.
