AB - One of the more important developments in magnetic materials, polymer bonded magnets, have opened a new world of application opportunities. The Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite materials offer an excellent combination of strong magnetic and dynamical-mechanical properties. However, the transition temperatures of filler and matrix should be selected carefully considering the future application. Uniform particle distribution and good adhesion between Nd-Fe-B powder particles and polymer are essential for the quality of the composite, while stiffness of polymer matrix is one of the influencing factors as well. The damping properties of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composites with 15 wt.%, 50 wt.% and 75 wt.% of Nd-Fe-B powder were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis and compared with a pure polymer sample. Thermal stability was analyzed using a simultaneous differential scanning calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis technique.

AB - Many of modern technologies require materials with unusual combinations of properties that cannot be met by the conventional metal alloys, ceramics, and polymeric materials. Material property combinations and ranges have been extended by the development of composite materials. Development of Nd-Fe-B/polymer composite magnetic materials has significantly increased interest in research and development of bonded magnets, since particles of Nd-Fe-B alloys are proved to be very suitable for their production. This study investigates the mechanical and magnetic properties of compression molded Nd-Fe-B magnets with different content of magnetic powder in epoxy matrix. Mechanical properties were investigated at ambient temperature according to ASTM standard D 3039-00. The obtained results show that tensile strength and elongation decrease with an increase of Nd-Fe-B particles content in epoxy matrix. The modulus of elasticity increases, which means that in exploitation material with higher magnetic powder content, subjected to the same level of stress, undergoes 2 to 3.5 times smaller deformation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of sample surfaces and fracture surfaces caused by the tensile strength tests. The results of SQUID magnetic measurements show an increase of magnetic properties of the investigated composites with increasing content of Nd-Fe-B particles.

AB - The goal of these investigations was to define the process parameters that enable the formation of a composite coating with the most uniform thickness on an optical fiber. The composite coating was obtained by drawing the optical fiber through a reservoir with a die at the bottom. The reservoir was supplied with a dispersion of magnetic powder in a polymer solution. The effect of the dispersion viscosity, powder concentration and drawing rate on the uniformity of the composite coating thickness under laboratory conditions was investigated on a defined system to establish the optimal coating conditions. Dispersions were formed by dispersing different concentrations of Ba-ferrite in a poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) solution in toluene. The thickness of the coatings and its uniformity were determined by microscopic analysis and further evaluated by mathematical-statistical analysis. The smallest standard deviation (S.D.) of the mean value of the diameter of the optical fiber with a composite coating was chosen as the criteria for defining the most uniform composite coating. The results show that the most uniform coatings were obtained with a dispersion viscosity whose value was about 1.2 Pa s. All the process parameters should be established in accordance with this viscosity value, enabling the formation of the most uniform composite coating for the investigated system.

AB - A mathematical model of forming a composite coating on optical fiber was established. The model is based on existing mathematical models for coating optical fibers with polymer coating and experimentally defined rheological behavior of the investigated dispersed system. The model was developed for a dispersed system consisting of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) - EVA in a form of toluene solution and powders of magnetic materials (BaFe12O19 and SmCo5). The influence of the die diameter, diameter of the original optical fiber, concentration of EVA and magnetic powders on the thickness of composite coating was investigated. The model shows good agreement with experimental data.

AB - The possibility of using iron powders of different morphological, chemical and physical properties as the bases of the metal matrix of the friction layer in sintered friction materials for dry friction under severe braking conditions was investigated. Sintered friction materials, based on sponge iron powder and on iron powder with a fiber-like structure were examined. The influence of the used iron powders on the characteristic of the sintered friction materials was monitored by microstructural analysis and investigation of the frictional characteristics. The experimental results obtained by measuring the coefficient of friction (μ) and wear (UM), were evaluated by means of a mathematical-statistical method. By comparing the mean values of μ and UM for the friction materials based on the two investigated iron powders, it was confirmed that each of these characteristics lies within the expected interval of required values.
