AB - The protocols for the preparation of dendritic cells (DCs) as cancer vaccines based on stimulation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are very promising. In this study we covalently attached 7-thia-8-oxoguanosine (7-TOG), a selective endosomal TLR7, to previously oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (o-MWCNTs) (mass ratio 1:5.6, respectively), and tested their ability to activate human monocyte-derived (Mo)DCs. Light, confocal and transmission electron microscopy confirmed efficient phagocytosis of 7-TOG-MWCNTs by MoDCs and their efficient delivery to TLR7(+) endosomes. The biocompatibility studies showed that 7-TOG-MWCNTs, at concentrations lower than 100 mu g/ml, were not cytotoxic for MoDCs. 7-TOG-MV/CNTs (50 mu g/ml) up-regulated CD86 expression, allostimulatory activity, T helper (Th)1- and Th17-polarizing capability of MoDCs. The same concentration of soluble 7-TOG, alone or in combination with control o-MWCNTs, did not have such effects. It can be hypothesized that the efficacy of 7-TOG-MWCNTs in stimulating MoDCs was a consequence of increased intracellular concentration of 7-TOG after internalization of the nano-complexes, because similar Th-polarizing capability could be induced with 10-times higher concentrations of soluble 7-TOG. In conclusion, our results suggest that functionalized MWCNTs may be a promising system for the delivery of drugs to intracellular targets, in order to improve the immunogenic potential of DCs for therapeutic purposes.

AB - Composites based on HAP and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (o-MWCNT) and monophase HAP materials were processed by spark plasma sintering. Starting from stoichiometric nano-sized HAP powder, monophase bioceramics were obtained with a density close to the theoretical one and with an average grain size of several hundred nanometers to micron dimensions. It was shown that decreasing the sintering temperature resulted in a decrease of the grain size, which affected an increase in the fracture toughness and hardness. The fracture toughness of an HAP/ o-MWCNT bioceramic processed at 900°C for only 5 min was 30 % higher than that of monophase HAP materials obtained under the same conditions. The addition of MWCNT during SPS processing of HAP materials caused a decrease in the grain size to the nano-dimension, which was one of the reasons for the improved mechanical properties.

AB - Chitosan-based films have found increasing implementation in a variety of fields, among which are as drug delivery carriers, in the packaging industry and as water purification filters. Therefore, in order to achieve mechanical integrity of such films while preserving processability and biocompatibility, chitosan-based films are fabricated in the forms of blends with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). A nano-indentation study was undertaken in order to investigate the nanomechanical properties and surface morphology of chitosan films in blends with various content of PEO. The results of differential scanning calorimetry, water uptake and nano-indentation revealed that films with an 80/20 blend ratio of chitosan/PEO showed the optimal values of reduced modulus and hardness. It appears that the incorporation of the synthetic PEO in chitosan films could lower the manufacturing costs while preserving the mechanical integrity of the films.

AB - New criteria in assessing the quality of drinking water reduced the maximum permissible concentration of arsenic from 50 mu g L-1 to 10 mu g L-1 and set a requirement for the development of new technologies for arsenic removal. In this paper, ethylenediamine functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (e-MWCNT) were loaded with iron(III) oxide in the goethite form, by precipitation of adsorbed Fe3+ and oxidized Fe2+ using base, in that way e-MWCNT/Fe3+ and e-MWCNT/Fe2+ adsorbents, respectively, were obtained. The influence of pH on the As(V) and As(III) removal from drinking water was studied in a batch system, of pH range 3-10 and initial arsenic concentration 0.05-4 mg L-1. Time dependent As(V) adsorption and adsorption data can be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and by Freundlich isotherm, applying linear and non-linear fitting methods. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained from Langmuir model for As(V) on e-MWCNT/Fe2+ and e-MWCNT/Fe3+ were 23.47 and 13.74 mg g(-1) at 25 degrees C. respectively. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of As(V) was spontaneous and endothermic for both e-MWCNT/Fe2+ and e-MWCNT/Fe3+. Influences of the pH, iron(III) oxide loading and interfering ions were modeled by MINTEQ program, and good agreement between experimental and modeling data was obtained.

AB - Pristine, oxidized, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine and triethylenetetramine modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (raw-MWCNT, o-MWCNT, e-MWCNT, d-MWCNT and t-MWCNT, respectively) were employed as adsorbents in order to study individual and competitive adsorption characteristics of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions. In batch tests, the influence of functionalization, pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature, on the ion adsorption on MWCNTs was studied. Adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on MWCNTs strongly depends on pH. Time dependent Pb2+ adsorption and adsorption data can be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and by Langmuir isotherm, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on d-MWCNT were 58.26 and 31.45 mg g(-1) at 45 degrees C. respectively. The competitive adsorption studies showed that the metal order affinity with respect to d-MWCNT and e-MWCNT is Pb2+ gt Cd2+. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of Pb2+ on appropriate nanotubes was spontaneous and endothermic. According to desorption studies, regenerated MWCNT can be reused over five times with minimal loss of adsorption capacity. Comparison of obtained results with capacities and affinities of other adsorbents indicates suitability of amino-functionalized MWCNT application for removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from aqueous solution.

Comparison of obtained results with capacities and affinities of other adsorbents indicates suitability of amino-functionalized MWCNT application for removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from aqueous solution.",

AB - Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as a support for Pt nanoparticles prepared by the microwave-assisted polyol method. The MWCNTs were pretreated by chemical oxidation (o-MWCNTs) followed by modification by ethylenediamine (eda-MWCNTs). Characterization of both oxidized and eda-modified materials by UV-spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the modification by eda leads to (i) agglomeration of the MWCNTs, (ii) a decrease in the capacitance of the material and (iii) reduced rate of electron transfer between the MWCNTs and solution species. However, the Pt loading of Pt/o-MWCNTs was only 2 mass% while the loading of Pt/eda-MWCNTs was 20 mass%. Much higher efficiency of Pt deposition on eda-MWCNTs than on o-MWCNTs was ascribed to the shift in pH(pzc) value of the MWCNT surface from 2.43 to 5.91 upon modification by eda. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the mean diameter of the Pt particles in Pt/eda-MWCNTs is 2.5 +/- 0.5 nm and that their distribution on the support is homogenous with no evidence of pronounced particle agglomeration. Cyclic voltammetry of a Pt/eda-MWCNT thin film indicated a clean Pt surface with well-resolved peaks characteristic of polycrystalline Pt. Its electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction was examined and the results corresponded to the commercial Pt nanocatalyst. This study shows that modification of o-MWCNTs by eda helps to achieve homogenous distribution of small Pt nanoparticles and does not impede its electrocatalytic activity.

AB - Twelve N-(3- and 4-substituted phenyl)-O-isobutyl thionocarbamates, eight of which are novel, were synthesized from O-isobutyl xanthate and 3- and 4-substituted anilines in the presence of a nano-platinum aminophenyl modified multi-walled carbon nanotube catalyst. The nano-Pt catalyst was prepared on a carbon nanotube support modified by diazotization, nitro group reduction, and subsequent microwave-assisted nano-Pt precipitation. The catalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The nano-platinum/modified carbon nanotube catalyst was compared with a commercial Pt/active carbon catalyst in terms of product purity and yield. The results obtained by the use of the catalysts were additionally compared with those obtained by reaction of sodium isobutyl xanthogenacetate and 3- and 4-substituted anilines. Full structure characterization of the synthesized N-(substituted phenyl)-O-isobutyl thionocarbamates was achieved using FT-IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, and mass spectrometric methods, and their purity was proved by elemental analysis and gas chromatography. The new catalytic method offers advantages over the commercial method, such as higher yields and no product purification is required, thus conforming to the principles of ecologically friendly syntheses.

AB - Surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by ethylenediamine, via chemical modification of carboxyl groups, using O-(7-azabenzotriazol-1-yl)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate, was performed. The resulting materials were characterized by different techniques, such as FTIR, TGA and elemental analysis. Biocompatibility studies showed that the functionalized MWCNTs, at concentrations between 1 and 50 mu g mL(-1), were not cytotoxic for the fibroblast L929 cell line. In batch tests, the influences of solution pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature on the sorption of Cd2+ ions onto raw-MWCNTs (raw-MWCNT), oxidized MWCNTs (o-MWCNT) and ethylenediamine-functionalized MWCNTs (e-MWCNT) were studied. The adsorption of Cd2+ ions by o-MWCNT and e-MWCNT was strongly pH dependent. The time dependent Cd2+ sorption onto raw-MWCNT, o-MWCNT and e-MWCNT can be described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Langmuir isotherm model agrees well with the equilibrium experimental data. The maximum capacity was obtained for e-MWCNT, 25.7 mgg(-1), at 45 degrees C. The thermodynamic parameters were also deduced for the adsorption of Cd2+ ions on raw-MWCNT, o-MWCNT and e-MWCNT and the results showed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic.

AB - Dapsone is an anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory drug. Water-dispersible dapsone-modified multi-wall carbon nanotubes (dap-MWCNTs) were prepared by chemical modification of the carboxyl groups introduced on the surface of the nanotubes using O-(7-aza-benzotriazol-1-yl)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate (N-HATU) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIEA). The modification was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission election microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The biological effect of dap-MWCNTs was tested using rat peritoneal macrophages (PMempty set). By confocal laser microscopy and flow cytometry, it was shown that the dap-MWCNTs were rapidly ingested by PMempty set as were the control, oxidized o-MWCNTs. Neither dap-MWCNTs at lower concentrations (up to 50 mu g/ml), nor o-MWCNTs, at equivalent concentrations, respectively affected the viability of PMempty set, while higher concentrations triggered apoptosis. Apoptosis of PMempty set induced by the control, o-MWCNTs, was higher than that induced by dap-MWCNTs and it correlated with the induction of oxidative stress. In contrast, dap-MWCNTs did not trigger oxidative stress but caused apoptosis of PMempty set predominantly after prolonged cultivation (3 days). Although equivalent concentrations of soluble dapsone induced oxidative stress, they were anti-apoptotic. Cumulatively, the obtained results show the complexity of dap-MWCNT/PMempty set interactions and suggest that this complex could be investigated for the treatment of dapsone-sensitive intracellular microorganisms or inflammatory diseases responding to dapsone therapy.

AB - Two samples of commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Sigma-Aldrich and Sun Nanotech) and a sample of carbon black (Vulcan XC-72R) were investigated in raw state and after the activation in nitric and sulfuric acid by ultrasound agitation. Atomic force microscopy revealed that activated Sigma-Aldrich nanotubes are straight with corrugated walls (bamboo-like structure), while Sun Nanotech nanotubes are tortuous with smooth walls. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups was formed on both Sigma-Aldrich and Sun Nanotech carbon nanotubes, as well as on carbon black surfaces. Electrochemical properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the electrochemically active surface area of all carbon samples is expanded, charge storage ability is enhanced and the electron-transfer kinetics, probed by Fe(CN)(6)(3-)/Fe(CN)(6)(4-) redox couple, is promoted upon activation. The characteristics of carbon nanotubes were superior to Carbon black. Morphology of the carbon nanotubes was found to be important; nanotubes with corrugated walls showed faster electron-transfer and pseudocapacitive redox kinetics than nanotubes with smooth walls. This was explained by the higher proportion of edge and defect sites, which are known as more electrochemically active than the walls of uniform graphene structure.

abstract = "Two samples of commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Sigma-Aldrich and Sun Nanotech) and a sample of carbon black (Vulcan XC-72R) were investigated in raw state and after the activation in nitric and sulfuric acid by ultrasound agitation. This was explained by the higher proportion of edge and defect sites, which are known as more electrochemically active than the walls of uniform graphene structure.",

AB - Surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), with amino groups via chemical modification of carboxyl groups introduced on the nanotube surface, using O-(7-azabenzotriazol-1-yl)-N, N,N',N'-tetramethyluronium hexafluorophosphate (N-HATU) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIEA) is reported. The N-HATU coupling agent provides faster reaction rate and the reaction occurs at lower temperature compared to amidation and acylation-amidation chemistry. The amines, 1,6-hexanediamine (HDA), diethylenetriamine (DETA), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and 1,4-phenylenediamine (PDA) were used. The resulting materials were characterized with different techniques such as FTIR, XRD, elemental analysis, TGA, TEM, UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. MWCNTs functionalized with PDA posses the best dispersibility and electron transfer properties in comparison to the others amines. Functionalized MWCNTs, at the concentrations between 1 and 50 mu g ml(-1), were not cytotoxic for the fibroblast L929 cell line. However, the concentrations of MWCNTs higher of 10 mu g ml(-1) reduced cell growth and this effect correlated positively with the degree of their uptake by L929 cells.

AB - The supercritical CO2 method was used in order to perform deagglomeration and improve the dispersion of nano-SiO2 particles. γ-Met-hacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane was used as the surface modification reagent. The conventional method for coating nano-SiO2 particles was used as the comparison method. Considerable improvement of the dispersion and deagglomeration was found using supercritical CO2. Analysis of the TEM micrographs and DLS results showed the reduction of the average size of the agglomerates with the silane coupling reagent. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the particles treated in supercritical CO2 were more thermally stable than particles treated by conventional method. Encapsulation of several particles coated with the silane coupling reagent was observed in certain parts of the primary particles. A chemical reaction takes place between the modification reagent, MEMO silane, and active hydroxyl groups on the surface of the nano-SiO2 particles. A larger quantity of MEMO silane reacted using the conventional method instead of the supercritical method. On the other hand, the reacted silane molecules were better arranged around the particle surface in the supercritical method because of the formation of covalent or self-assembled structures. Polycondensed structures were preferentially obtained in the conventional method. This was achieved by using supercritical CO2, which has a high solvating power such as organic solvents and physical properties (low viscosity, low surface tension and high diffusion coefficient) similar to gases on the other side. These properties enable the sufficient and uniform wettability of nano-SiO2 particle surfaces. These results are important for obtaining nanofillers with improved dispersion and polymer wettability. Such nanofillers can be used to obtain composite materials with considerably improved mechanical characteristics.
