AB - This research considers a possibility of improving the impact and ballistic resistance of composite materials based on aramid fabric impregnated with poly (vinyl butyral), PVB, with the application of multi-layer inorganic nanotubes of tungsten disulfide (INT-WS2) as the reinforcement. Multi-layered nano-structures of tungsten disulfide are known by their excellent mechanical resistance, especially shock absorbing properties, which promote their use as a reinforcement in composite materials. INT-WS2 used in this research were observed using scanning electron microscope and the obtained images were analyzed in program Image Pro Plus. Before the application in the composite they were ultrasonically deagglomerated. Ballistic composites were prepared impregnating the aramid fabric with system PVB/INT-WS2 and by pressing defined number of layers under high pressure and defined temperature. Charpy impact test, ballistic shooting with two different ammunition calibers and stab resistance test with controlled knife penetration were performed on prepared composite samples, and resulted in significant improvements for samples with nano-reinforcement regarding the absorbed energy of impact, toughness and the ballistic resistance.

AB - Impact resistant nanocomposites are recognized as promising in saving lives in the car, skiing and bicycle accidents, preventing the failure of polymer-based prostheses and orthotic devices, as well as for various defense applications. This research reports improved impact and ballistic resistance of composite materials based on p-aramid fabric impregnated with phenolic resin and poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB), reinforced with small amounts of inorganic fullerene-like nanoparticles of tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) and multiwall inorganic nanotubes (INT-WS2). The evaluation of the tensile testing resulted in significant improvements in the tensile strength (24.7%) and toughness (64.1%) for the composites with the addition of only 0.3 wt% INT-WS2 nanotubes. The impact toughness increased by 35.8%; the back-face deformation depths after shots were reduced by 12%; the absorbed energy of the knife stab 8.5% higher and the deformation depth 40.4% smaller than for the sample without the nanoreinforcement. The reaction of the composite material to shot impact was recorded by high-speed and infrared camera, to observe heating and cooling rates of the sample caused by dissipation of the kinetic energy of the shots.

AB - Pipelines are commonly used in process industry for transport of fluids, as well as granular solids, due to their numerous advantages in comparison to other transportation means. Pipe integrity is essential for a reliable work of the entire plant, as well as for safety assurance. Also, serious ecological consequences may follow the pipeline failure in some cases, i.e. due to the leak of toxic, flammable or otherwise dangerous fluids in a chemical or some other plant. Therefore, it is very important to examine the fracture behaviour of pipelines, which is done here by testing the recently proposed ring-shaped specimens exposed to bending. The specimens were fabricated from a seam pipe for pressure applications (allowed for usage on temperatures up to 300 degrees C). Initial defects, very narrow notches, were machined either in the base metal and weld metal (seam) or in the base metal only. Regardless of the defect position, ductile fracture mechanism is observed in all specimens. The results show that the ring-shaped specimen can be successfully used for fracture characterisation of pipeline material, especially for thin-walled pipes which are not suitable for production of standard fracture mechanics specimens due to the insufficient wall thickness.

AB - Experimental research on the behaviour of high-strength low-alloy steel ( HSLA)exposed to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) with controlled and fully reversible strain (Delta epsilon/2 = const, R epsilon =epsilon(min)/epsilon(max) = -1) has been analysed. LCF tests are performed on a series of smooth bar shaped specimens, 11 x 11 x 95 mm, parent metal (PM), welded joint (WJ) and simulated heat affected zone (SHAZ) of steel Nionikral 70 (NN-70) with semi-amplitude of controlled strain, Delta epsilon/2 = 0.40- 0.80. The results of the experimental investigation have given us important information on the understanding of fatigue behaviour of steel NN-70 and its welded joints. In this work the results of static and dynamic-, that is monotonous and fatigue behaviour of the material, are compared, which is a practical contribution to the assessment of the behaviour of PM and WJ of steel NN-70 exposed to effects of low cycle fatigue, i.e. monotonous and fatigue behaviour of the material.

AB - High strength low-alloy steel under low cycle fatigue at a certain level of strain controlled achieve stabilized condition. During the fatigue loading stabilized hysteresis loop is determined, which typical cycle of stabilization is calculated as half number of cycles to failure. Stabilized hysteresis loop is a representative of all hysteresis and it's used to determine all of the parameters for the assessment of low cycle fatigue. This paper Shows comparison of complete strain-life curves of low cycle fatigue for two chosen stabilized hysteresis loop cycles of base metal HSLA steel marked as Nionikral 70.

AB - In this paper microstructural and mechanical properties of high-carbon steel surface welded layer obtained with self-shielded flux cored wire are presented in standard rails and crossings. The testing results of tensile characteristics, hardness, toughness via instrumented Charpy pendulum, microstructural analysis and fatigue crack growth resistance of all characteristical zones are analyzed in detail, especially from the point of view of interaction between microstructure and properties. The obtained results indicate superior properties of repaired welded layers, which is due to their similarity to the new generation of bainitic steel, i.e., due to the change of microstructure from original pearlitic structure to final bainitic structure. Finally, fatigue crack growth parameters have shown that deposite layer has higher resistance than the crack growth, improving overall reliability of rails and crossings.

AB - The behavior of the plates with a surface notch under tensile external loading is experimentally and numerically analyzed. The specimens were made of micro-alloyed steel NIO-MOL 490 K. welded by MAC (CO2) welding method. Surface notches were machined by the spark erosion method in the weld metal and heat affected zone. A finite element analysis of the specimens subjected to the tensile external loading is performed, with a simplified treatment of the heat affected zone mechanical properties. Obtained results are compared with the results of the experimental investigation, and a satisfactory agreement for the specimens containing the weld metal notch is observed. However, results for the specimen containing a notch in the heat affected zone require further investigation, including the analysis of the effects of micro structural heterogeneity.

AB - The subject of this paper is investigation of the damage level of API J55 steel, used for manufacturing casing pipes by high frequency (HF) contact welding. The analysed pipe was withdrawn after about 70 000 hours of service in an oil drilling rig. Experimental analysis included determining the mechanical properties of the base material and welded joint, in particular the tensile and impact toughness testing. Fracture behaviour is examined by testing the modified compact tension (CT) specimens machined with a pre-crack in the base metal, weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ). The critical value of the stress intensity factor K(Ic) is determined using the critical value of the J integral J(Ic). Fatigue crack growth rate and fatigue threshold stress intensity factor range are determined by three point bending tests of the Charpy specimens with a V-notch. The investigation conducted on specimens cut from the exploited pipe and the new pipe of the same grade revealed that material properties were not seriously altered during the analysed period of service.

AB - Results of the experimental and numerical comparative analysis of steamline pipes have been presented. New pipes and the pipes used for more than 117,000 hours at 540 degrees C under pressure of 42 bars have been simultaneously tested. This testing has been carried out because frequent failures of the equipment components exposed to elevated temperatures, Such as steam pipelines, make it necessary to pay particular attention to the analysis of the materials used. The most frequent failures were those connected with occurrence of cracks, particularly expressed in case of steel 14MoV6 3. Local approach to fracture has been developed for complete understanding of fracture mechanism. This approach combines theoretical, experimental and numerical solutions.

AB - Thanks to fact that composite material have usefully characteristic two or more materials, they are becoming more and more substitute standard materials in every field of technique they start to. In this study static mechanical examinations of tensile properties of fiber-resin composites that consist of polyaramid fiber (Kevlar 129) and poly(vinilbutyral) were performed. Beside analysis of experiment results, these studies consist micromechanical analysis of crack initiation and crack propagation during tension. The all failures and damage mechanisms under tension tests are proved and describe on crack surfaces of test specimens.

AB - In order to obtain a composite material with desired improved resistance to penetration of ballistic projectile, a poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) reinforced laminar thermoplastic composite material has been made. This paper describes the procedure of manufacturing such composite material, and its response during the ballistically and micromehanically testing as well. The analysis of impact resistance results obtained from ballistically tested and untested composite panel specimens has shown an improved mechanical energy absorption capability due to effect of strong aramid fibers, ductile thermoplastic matrix and interface between fiber and matrix. This interface enables load transfer between the two constituents using high load-bearing capacity of the reinforcement. Another feature of the interface is deflection of propagating cracks within the material and thus increasing toughness.

AB - In order to obtain a composite material with desired improved resistance to penetration of ballistic projectile, a poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) reinforced laminar thermoplastic composite material has been made. This paper describes the procedure of manufacturing such composite material, and its behavior during the ballistic and micromechanical testing as well. Another feature of the interface is deflection of propagating cracks within the material and thus raising toughness.
