AB - Within this investigation, the effect of conventional and sophisticated extraction method was evaluated on the chemical composition of black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.) essential oils and their bioactive characteristics. Soxhlet extraction at 60 °C by hexane (SEH) and petroleum ether (SEP) was adopted as traditionally used technique, while the supercritical extraction with CO2 (SFE), under the pressure of 10 MPa and temperature of 40 °C, was performed as a modern method, expected to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional solvent extraction. The results showed that SFE enabled up to ten times higher extraction yields, compared to essential oils derived after Soxhlet extraction, however, the bioactive compounds content, such as polyphenols, flavonoids and carotenoids, were extracted in higher quantities in the oil from Soxhlet extraction performance. Thereby, the strongest antioxidant agent was found to be the essential oil obtained from SEP, followed by the oil from SFE and oil obtained from SEH, respectively. The GC-MS analysis revealed that the content of thymoquinone was the highest in the essential oil from SEP (69.58%), and the obtained values are among the highest reported within the available literature data. Also, this oil sample contained about eleven times higher thymoquinone quantities than the essential oil obtained by SFE, which was mostly constituted of a methyl linoleate, a fatty acid methyl ester of linoleic acid. In addition, the essential oil from SEP exerted a value added antimicrobial properties, where it was found to be particularly effective in suppression of the Gram-positive bacteria growth.

AB - Composting of mixed medicinal plant waste was performed with the addition of mixture of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB), including Streptomyces sp., Paenybacillus sp., Bacillus sp., and Hymenobacter sp., and portions of spent coffee grounds (SCG). To assess the maturity and quality parameters of the compost, chemical and biological parameters (C/N ratio, loss of organic matter, CO2 production, dehydrogenase activity (DHA), and phytotoxicity) were evaluated during the three months of the composting process. The results revealed that the control sample (without the addition of SCG and PGPB) had evidently lower values of DHA during the entire monitoring period in comparison to other samples, indicating lower microbial activity in the compost mixture. Also, according to the released CO2, the composting process was accelerated in all samples where the SCG and PGPB were added, enabling a reduction in time needed for mixed plant waste to decompose. The germination index (GI) of the tested seeds indicated that the produced compost was acceptable and safe, with regard to all of the evaluated samples. However, at the end of the process the samples contained SCG and PGPB, which caused an increase of more than 50% of the GI in comparison to the control sample, expressing a high phyto-stimulant effect and improving the biofertilization impact.

AB - This study has explored the effect of three phytohormones application, based on α-naphthyl acetic acid, named INCIT 1, INCIT 8 and INCIT K, on the root system growing potential and rooting stimulation of Thymus pannonicus All. cuttings. This plant is highly reputable not only in a folk medicine, but also recognized in the business sector, due to a multiple uses and beneficial effects on human health.
The research was located in Veliko Središte, Vršac (Serbia) and conducted in May, 2021. The cuttings were dipped in a powdered formulation of phytohormones and placed in plastic containers pre-filled with commercial substrate. The phytohormone-free variant was taken as a control. After 2 months, the cuttings were removed and the morphological and biological properties (polyphenols content and antioxidant activity by DPPH radical and FRAP method) were measured.
Based on the morphological results, all of treated samples showed satisfactory behaviour, whereby the most suitable phytohormone to stimulate the growth of cuttings was INCIT 8, in which the average weight of the aboveground vegetative part of the plant and root mass were higher for more than 60% in relation to the control; the number of roots were about 25% higher, whereby the mass of the whole plant was almost 3 times increased. Considering the biological activities in a 5% aqueous infusions of the samples, it was found that the polyphenols content and the antioxidant activity were lowered in treated samples, with relation to the control, excluding the sample INCIT 8 where the FRAP value was slightly increased, while the inhibition of DPPH radicals was higher by around 15%.
The applied phytohormone treatment may ensure economically viable yields of standard or even improved plant quality. In the following period, it is expected that all of treated adult plants will have a higher content of biologically active substances.

AB - The paper examines the effect of the application of three different preparations on the presence of four economically significant diseases in the crops of pot marigold, valerian and potato. On pot marigold, the intensity was determined of pot marigold powdery mildew infection of the marigold leaf (Podosphaera xanthii (Castagne) U. Braun & Shishkoff), whereas on valerian, it was the intensity of valerian stem canker and black mold (Alternaria alternata (Fr. ex Fr.) Keissel), and in potatoes, the intensity of early blight (Alternaria solani (Ellis & Mart.)) and that of late blight (Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary). Of the preparations, the synthetic preparation "Sekvenca" ("Sequence") (a.m. difenoconazole, 250 g/l) was applied at a dose of 0.5 l/ha, the registered biostimulant "Zlatno inje" ("Golden frost") (manure-based fertiliser) was applied at a dose of 3.0 l/ha, microbiological preparation (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ssp. TMF3) at a dose of 3.0 l/ha. The fourth variant was the control variant, i.e. the variant without treatment. Field experiments were performed during 2019 at two locations in the wider area of the City of Pančevo. The experiments were performed by a randomised block system with three replications. The size of the main plot was 9.0 m2 (4.5 x 2.0 m). The following was used as plant material: the pot marigold variety of "Domaći oranž" ("Domestic orange"), the valerian variety of "Vojvođanski" ("Vojvodinian") and the potato variety of "Desire". The first assessment of disease intensity was performed one month following the treatment with the selected preparations, and the second one was performed two weeks after the first assessment. In the pot marigold crops, the smallest infection percentage had the plants treated with the type Bacillus amyloliquefaciens TMF3, in valerian, the fewest plants infected with the fungus A. alternata were recorded on small plots on which the synthetic preparation "Sekvenca" was applied, which was also the case with early blight and late blight. The weakest efficiency in the control of pot marigold powdery mildew infection and valerian stem canker and black mold was recorded with the use of the biostimulant "Zlatno inje", which showed the highest efficiency in the case of late blight. The highest yield of pot marigold seeds (632.7 kg/ha) had been treated with the type Bacillus amyloliquefaciens TMF3, with valerian, the highest seeds yield was recorded following the application of the preparation "Sekvenca" (186.1 kg/ha), while in potatoes, the highest amount of tubers was recorded with the preparation "Zlatno inje" (30.83 t/ha). However, if the agroecological and the agrotechnical aspects of production are taken into account, by the use of the type Bacillus amyloliquefaciens TMF3, a satisfactory basis was achieved for various kinds of further research of this and similar preparations in order to improve the existing production of medicinal and other types of plants.

abstract = "The paper examines the effect of the application of three different preparations on the presence of four economically significant diseases in the crops of pot marigold, valerian and potato. However, if the agroecological and the agrotechnical aspects of production are taken into account, by the use of the type Bacillus amyloliquefaciens TMF3, a satisfactory basis was achieved for various kinds of further research of this and similar preparations in order to improve the existing production of medicinal and other types of plants., U radu je ispitivan uticaj primene tri različita preparata na prisutnost četiri ekonomski značajne bolesti u usevu nevena, odoljena i krompira. AB - BACKGROUNDIn order to study the influence of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) belonging to Streptomyces sp., Paenibacillus sp., and Hymenobacter sp. on fixed oil content of flaxseed and black cumin, 2-year field experiments were conducted. PGPB was applied during seedtime of plants. The extraction of oil from seeds was performed using supercritical CO2. RESULTSThe addition of PGPB significantly increases the content of C18:1 (from 16.060.03% to 16.97 +/- 0.03%) and C18:3 (from 42.97 +/- 0.2% to 45.42 +/- 0.5%) in flaxseed oil and C18:2 (from 52.68 +/- 0.50% to 57.11 +/- 0.40%) and C20:2 (from 4.34 +/- 0.02% to 4.54 +/- 0.03%) in black cumin seed oil. The contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids, as well as antioxidant activity measured by ferric-reducing ability of plasma assay, were found to be greater in the oil from the seeds of plants treated with the PGPB, compared with the respective non-treated samples. CONCLUSIONThe use of PGPB enhances plant nutritive properties; these represent a great source for obtaining valuable functional food ingredients.

AB - Mixed medicinal plant waste was composted with addition of novel bacterial strains belonging to the genera Streptomyces, Paenybacillus, Bacillus and Hymenobacter. The composting was followed by assessment of chemical and biological parameters including C/N ratio, loss of organic matter, phosphorous and potassium content as well as CO2 generation and dehydrogenase activity during 164 days. The selected mesophilic bacterial starters had a potential to significantly reduce the period of mixed herb waste decomposition, from about 6 months to about 2.5 months. Based on the seed germination index of four plants (Fagopirum esculentum, Thymus vulgaris, Cynara scolimus and Lavandula officinalis) the germination and radial root growth of the investigated plants was improved by the inoculated compost. The germination index of all tested species on the mature inoculated composts was in average 60% higher compared to the control compost. The research indicates that the mesophilic starter addition into the herbs waste can contribute to the speed of waste decomposition and lead to the improvement of biofertilization effect of the obtained compost.

AB - Microwave-assisted extraction was optimised by the response surface methodology in order to enhance the extraction of polyphenols from Equisetum arvense (horsetail). Under the optimal conditions the total polyphenol content in extract reached a concentration of 161.57 mg of gallic acid equivalents per g of extract dry matter. The optimal conditions were reached with 54.5% of ethanol, 45.1 mL/g liquid/solid ratio, the microwave power of 170 Wand 80s extraction time. The antioxidant activity of obtained extract was evaluated by FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity assay. Since, the conditions that favoured maximum polyphenol content in extract were the same as the conditions that favoured maximum antioxidant activity, the polyphenols were identified as the predominant antioxidants in horsetail extracts. When compared to the conventional extraction method (solid liquid extraction for 12 h), our results showed that more polyphenols can be extracted from waste horsetail using microwave extraction and aqueous ethanol, for just 80s. The extracts obtained by optimised extraction procedure exhibit significant antioxidant activity and can be used as a natural source of antioxidants.
