AB - The presented paper investigates the influence of zinc addition on corrosion characteristics of different sterling silver alloy systems. Open circuit potential measurements, linear polarization resistance method, and potentiodynamic polarization tests were employed to determine the corrosion characteristics of the alloys. The materials were tested in an Artificial Sweat, 0.9% NaCl, and 0.01M Na2S solutions. Based on the presented results, it could be concluded that zinc has the most significant direct impact. The benefits of zinc addition are especially noticeable in aluminum-containing alloy systems, but only up to 3.7 % of Zn. The best results are achieved for alloy AgCu1.9Zn3.7Al1.6Si0.3.

AB - Although the same quality of various metals from the recycling process is considered for granted, obtaining aluminum of high purity and aluminum alloys with identical properties as from production from pure raw materials is a very challenging process, especially if the sources for recycling are numerous materials that contain different impurities. In this study, recycled alloys were produced by melting of aluminum scrap with the addition of the required components. This paper aims to compare two commercial Al alloys with their analogs from the recycling process. Both of the alloys belong to the aluminum series 6000, with designations 6060 and 6082. The results of comparing corrosion and physical characteristics are presented in this study. Physical characterization was performed by measuring the alloys' hardness and electrical conductivity. The electrochemical investigation used several corrosion methods, OCP (open circuit potential), measuring polarization curves in apparent Tafel region with extrapolation of results, and LRP (linear polarization resistance). The corrosion environment was acidulated 0.5M Na2SO4 with pH=2.5. The received results have confirmed insignificant differences between the properties of the commercial and alloys produced by the recycling. Recycled alloys have achieved almost identical mechanical properties and even slightly better corrosion characteristics, which was the consequence of the lower concentration of impurities in recycled alloys or higher concentration of microalloying components.

AB - The electric arc furnace has been the subject of extensive research due to its complex and chaotic nature. Machine learning methods provide a powerful forensic examination of industrial processes as they exclude numerous assumptions and involve irregularities present in industrial conditions. In this study, different machine learning and data processing methods were used to evaluate the energy efficiency parameters of the electric arc furnace process. The dataset was collected over five years, in a steelmaking factory, with 42 features. This data was split into training and test sets, which were used for training and evaluation, respectively. With extensive data management, the data quality and machine learning model performance were improved. It was found that selected models display similar performance, yet the artificial neural network shows greater flexibility when changing targets. The results indicate that a data-centric rather than model-centric approach is better for improving model performance. Using the partial dependence plot and SHAP method, insight was gained into each parameter's correlation with the target. It was found that the amount of hot heel (melted steel left in the furnace, to be re-heated) was the main factor disturbing the data quality and model performance. It was also demonstrated that data for total oxygen consumption should be divided from the oxygen used into refining and natural gas. This highly improves model performance. Employing a data-centric machine learning model to control and optimize main process parameters (with a small capital investment) leads to lower energy consumption for industrial processes.

AB - By-products from zinc hydrometallurgy are classified as hazardous waste with strong leaching toxicities. Even though numerous research papers are dedicated to valorizing valuable metals in it, the primary management route is still disposal or partial reuse, such as the Waelz process. Presented experimental research investigates possibilities of sulfidization and further processing as a technologically sustainable route for valuable metals valorization from non-standard jarosite-PbAg sludge. The comprehensive thermodynamic analysis was done by HSC Chemistry(R), through optimizing process parameters, i.e., temperature, sulfur addition, and selection of possible additives. Technological possibility of magnetic separation, flotation, and smelting of sulfidized material was also investigated; the results were below the values that allow practical application, due to the obtained texture of sulfidized jarosite, which does not allow the liberation of minerals. Smelting tests were performed on sulfidized jarosite with sulfur and without and with carbon as additive. By smelting sulfidized jarosite-PbAg sludge with added carbon in sulfidization stage at 1375 degrees C, obtained products were matte, slag, raw lead, and dust in which base, critical, and slag forming components were valorized. Valuable metals were concentrated in smelting products so as to enable further processing, which also could be interesting in the case of treatment of complex, polymetallic, and refractory primary materials, which represent a significant contribution to the circular economy.

AB - This paper presents thermochemical synthesis of copper/alumina nanocomposites in a Cu-Al(2)O(3)system with 1-2.5 wt.% of alumina and their characterization, which included: transmission electron microscopy: focused ion beam (FIB), analytical electron microscopy (AEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Thermodynamic analysis was used to study the formation mechanism of desirable products during drying, thermal decomposition and reduction processes. Upon synthesis of powders, samples were cold pressed (2 GPa) in tools dimension 8 x 32 x 2 mm and sintered at temperatures within the range 800-1000 degrees C for 15 to 120 min in a hydrogen atmosphere. Results of characterization showed that dispersion-strengthened compacts could be produced by sintering of thermo-chemically prepared Cu-Al(2)O(3)powders with properties suitable for material application, such as a contact material exhibiting high strength and high electrical conductivity at the same time. Additional research was carried out in order to analyze the application of the obtained nanocomposite powders for the synthesis of copper/alumina nanocomposites by a new method, which is a combination of a thermochemical procedure and mechanical alloying. The measured values of an electric conductivity and hardness were compared with ones in literature, confirming an advantage of the proposed combined strategy.

AB - High flexibility of hydrometallurgical operations as well as economic and environmental acceptability, offer the opportunity to selectively obtain metals in the early stages of the processing. This enables the application of hydrometallurgical operations in processing of ores which, due to their complex composition or low copper content, are not suitable for pyrometallurgical treatment. In contrast to sulfide minerals, leaching of oxide ores does not requires presence of oxidizing agent. This paper presents the results of influence of temperature on the leaching degree of copper from pyritechalcopyrite concentrate by sulfuric acid solution at atmospheric pressure. According to the obtained results, it was found that an increase in the leaching temperature significantly contributes to the increase in the leaching efficiency, where after 6 hours of leaching at 40°C achieved efficiency was 90.6%.

AB - The results of experimental studies of the effect of the plasma sprayed alumina coating on the improved corrosion resistance of the heat-resistant ferritic
stainless steel (W.Nr. 1.4713, EN X10CrAlSi7) in the sulfuric acid are presented in
this research. In this investigation, the plasma spray process was employed on the
substrate of ferritic stainless steel with deposition of Al2O3 ceramic coatings with Ni5%Al as a bond layer. Two different coating thicknesses of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm
were tested. The investigation was performed by electrochemical characterization
and weight loss method. Electrochemical characterization of corrosion behavior of
steel with and without ceramic coating was performed by: the open circuit potential
measurement (OCP), the linear polarization resistance (LRP) method, and the
Tafel extrapolation method. All electrochemical measurements were performed in
the sulfuric acid with a concentration of 0.25 mol/dm3
(pH  1.00). Weight loss
method was performed with a duration of 240 h in the 38 wt.% sulfuric acid. Corrosion current densities obtained by electrochemical methods with the coatings were
between 3 and 4 % of the values of the samples without coatings. Nearly the same
results were obtained with the weight loss method. In both cases, these values are
similar to the porosity of the coatings.

AB - This study presents the results of the theoretical assessment and a preliminary experimental investigation of technology metals (TM) recovery from magnetic fraction obtained after mechanical treatment of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). Experimental work included physical and chemical characterization, thermodynamic analysis, and pyrometallurgical tests corresponding to secondary lead, copper, and steel metallurgy. Technology metals recyclability and recovery potential were evaluated with respect to their distribution between metal and slag phase (difficult for recovering) versus the dust phase (easy for recovering). According to obtained results, it was determined that high-temperature processing of magnetic fraction in the electric arc furnace promotes volatilization of the TM and their pre-concentration in the filter as a dust product from which they could be valorized using further hydrometallurgical methods.

AB - Secondary alkaline lead slag (SALS), generated during lead-acid batteries recycling, is a hazardous waste due to its high reactivity, solubility, and migration of toxic elements. After pulverization caused by storage under atmospheric condition for 30 days, the SALS was sieved and coarse fraction (+1 mm) was returned to the recycling process. Finer fraction (-1 mm) was treated by water leaching to remove soluble compounds. SALS compositions prior and after the pre-treatment and effects of liquid-to-solid ratio, stirring rate, and temperature on Na, S, Fe, As, and Pb leaching from SALS were analyzed. The results show that maximal leaching degrees were 95.78%, 75.32%, and 79.89% for Na, S, and As, respectively (20 l kg(-1), 600 min(-1), 333 K, 120 min). Leachability of Na and S from SALS was controlled by dissolution of Na2SO4 that could be recovered from leaching solution. Isothermal As leaching is described by diffusion mechanism with activation energy of 15.5 kJ mol(-1). Insoluble Pb and Fe sulfates, sulfides, and oxides remained in the SALS. Pre-treated SALS, with reduced mass up to 32%, was solidified in cement matrix. The results of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and unconfined compressive strength confirmed effectiveness of As removal from SALS by water leaching and Pb immobilization in cement matrix containing 20% of SALS.

AB - Reuse of waste is one of the main principles of sustainable development and circular economy. Secondary alkaline lead slag is a hazardous waste generated in the recycling process of lead-acid batteries that may be suitable in construction materials. The environmental impact of the use of lead slag as a partial replacement of fine aggregates in the cement-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) process for the preparation of concrete was studied in this paper. Solidified products containing 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% slag were laboratory tested by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) analyses and the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). At the same time, the leachability of toxic elements from solidified products with a high percent of slag was evaluated under environmental conditions for during one year. The results of the UCS and TCLP indicated that utilization of this type of slag in cement-based applications may be justified with its controlled addition. However, the described application of the slag was disputed due to the high release of As under high alkaline environmental conditions. Eh-pH analyses and the geochemical modeling using the software PHREEQC were evaluated, as well as the mechanism of pollutant (Pb, As) immobilization (precipitation, adsorption) as a function of pH conditions.

AB - This paper describes the synthesis of tungsten disulfide (WS2) powder by the sulfurization of tungsten trioxide (WO3) particles in the presence of additive potassium carbonate (K2CO3) in nitrogen (N-2) atmosphere, first at lower temperature (200 degrees C) and followed by reduction at higher temperature (900 degrees C). In addition, the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of ammonium meta-tungstate hydrate (AMT) was used for the production of WO3 particles at 650 degrees C in air. The HSC ChemistryA (R) software package 9.0 was used for the analysis of chemistry and thermodynamic parameters of the processes for WS2 powder synthesis. The crystalline structure and phase composition of all synthesized powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The morphology and chemical composition of these samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX).

AB - The aim of this research was to study the effect of graphite addition in the process of synthesis of tribological materials based on tin sulphides. The tin sulphides powders were synthesized from selected precursors by pyrometallurgical method in rotary tilting tube furnace. The thermodynamic parameters of the synthesis were determined using HSC Chemistry software modelling package. In addition, the synthesis process was also characterized by the thermal analysis method: simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (DCS-TGA). The characterization of the synthesized tin sulphides powders included analysis of chemical composition by optical emission spectroscopy, phase composition identification by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and examination of morphology, as well as elemental composition by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The hexagonal SnS2 and orthorhombic Sn2S3 phases were formed after the thermal treatment of starting powders in nitrogen atmosphere. The obtained results indicate the positive effects of the graphite addition which enables the synthesis of tin sulphide powders with appropriate content of sulphide phases with minimal loss of sulphur.

AB - This paper presents an experimentally-proved hydrometallurgical process for selective metals recovery from the waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) using a combination of conventional and time-saving methods: leaching, cementation, precipitation, reduction and electrowinning. According to the results obtained in the laboratory tests, 92.4% Cu, 98.5% Pb, 96.8% Ag and over 99% Au could be selectively leached and recovered using mineral acids: sulfuric, nitric and aqua regia. Problematic tin recovery was addressed with comprehensive theoretical and experimental work, so 55.4% of Sn could be recovered through the novel physical method, which consists of two-step phase separation. Based on the results, an integral hydrometallurgical route for selective base and precious metals recovery though consecutive steps, (i) Cu, (ii) Sn, (iii) Pb and Ag, and (iv) Au, was developed. The route was tested at scaled-up laboratory level, confirming feasibility of the process and efficiencies of metals recovery. According to the obtained results, the proposed hydrometallurgical route represents an innovative and promising method for selective metals recovery from WPCBs, particularly applicable in small scale hydrometallurgical environments, focused on medium and high grade WPCBs recycling.

AB - This paper presents the method for preparation the fine Ag powder with a particles size smaller than 2 μm. Reduction was performed from the nitrate solution directly by the vigorous stirring at the room temperature by the use of ascorbic acid as the reducing agent and polyvinylpyridine as the protecting agent. Silver powder with nearly spherical particles and size of micrometers were prepared by the chemical reduction and characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM analysis has shown that preferred size, less than 2 μm was obtained. Silver with purity of 99.9% or more was obtained.

AB - This paper presents investigations of the influence of silicon addition on the mechanical and corrosion characteristics of the sterling silver Ag-Cu-Zn alloys. The procedure for obtaining Ag-Cu-Zn-Si alloys in small ranges of composition was also presented Vickers hardness tests and three electrochemical tests were performed on the samples in this study. Open circuit potential measurements, linear polarization resistance method, and potentiodynamic polarization tests were employed to determine corrosion characteristics of the alloys. The materials were tested in 0.9% Nacl solution, artificial sweat, 0.1 and 0.01 M sodium sulfide solutions. It was shown that addition of silicone increases hardness and generally improves sulfidation resistance and corrosion characteristics in near-neutral chloride solutions of the Ag-Cu-Zn alloys.

AB - The aesthetic appearance of metals has long been recognised in archaeometric studies as an important factor driving inventions and innovations in the evolution of metal production. Nevertheless, while studies of ancient gold metallurgy are well supported by modern research in colour characteristics of gold alloys, the colour properties of major prehistoric copper alloys, such as arsenical copper and tin bronzes, remain either largely understudied or not easily accessible to the western scholarship. A few published studies have already indicated that alloying and heat treatment change the colours of copper alloys, although they are mainly based on examples of prehistoric tin bronze objects and experimental casts. Here we present a procedure for building the Cu-As-Sn ternary colour diagram, starting with experimental casting of 64 binary and ternary alloys in this system. We used two types of information to produce two different ternary colour diagrams: one based on photographs of the samples, and the other based on the colorimetric measurements. Furthermore, we developed a procedure for creating a graphic representation of colours in the Cu-As-Sn ternary diagram using QGIS. As an initial case study, we plotted the composition of the world's earliest tin bronze artefacts; the graphic representation further supports claims about the importance of a golden hue for their invention and demand, c. 6500 years ago. We argue that the presented colour diagrams will find wide use in future investigations of aesthetics of prehistoric copper alloys.

AB - This paper presents the results of theoretical assessment and a preliminary experimental investigation of the modified pyrometallurgical processing of metallic granulate obtained after mechanical treatment of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). The studied two-step process included oxidation of metallic granulate followed by pyrometallurgical refining in a DC arc-furnace. In the investigated process, the oxygen bounded in metal oxides, obtained during the oxidation annealing of granulate, was used as a "solid" oxidizer for subsequent pyrometallurgical refining in a DC arc-furnace. According to the obtained results, the Cu content in the produced metallic phase (anodic copper) was 98.4% and is suitable for further electro-refining process. In addition, over 94% of Au was concentrated in metallic phase, suggesting that a high Au yield could be attained. However, owing to the distribution between slag phase and filter product, only 60% of Ag was collected in the metal phase. In-between metal and slag is the metal-oxide phase, containing Cu with metals impurities, such as Sn and Pb, which was obtained as well, and could be further treated using conventional processes for additional metal valorization. The investigated concept would allow substitution of the long-lasting oxygen blowing process and application of complicated pyrometallurgical reactors and create a feasible alternative for lower operating capacities.

AB - Wide application of hard metals requires increased consumption of their constituents. Their high cost and scarcity impose the need for finding new, both ecologically and economically justified ways for their production. In presented research, on the basis of previous research, a review of an integrated technological procedure of recycling and valorization of useful components from hard metals secondary raw materials is given. Integrated procedure for processing of hard metal's waste enables the preparation of a wide range of powders with required properties, a high efficiency and reducing the duration of individual stages of procedures for their processing. Therefore, besides conservation of natural resources there are also significant economic and energetic benefits. The developed technological procedure is in service of sustainable development.

AB - Simulating the reactions in a complex system can lead to self-sustaining and energy efficient treatment of wastes in recycling promoting manner. In this contribution, the synergic combination of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD), mill scale, and secondary aluminum, in a form of waste foil, was researched aiming to use exothermal energy of reactions and to obtain environmentally favorable products. The secondary aluminum in the form of foil was prepared in different ways in order to develop aluminum surface and to be suitable for aluminothermic reactions. The commercial aluminum powder was used to determine optimal conditions using full factorial experiment design. After that, research was performed on aluminothermic reactions with the aluminum powder obtained from secondary aluminum foils. Results show that the secondary aluminum can be successfully used for a treatment of oxides bearing hazardous wastes in an energy efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The comparative life-cycle assessment revealed several advantages of using the secondary aluminum foil as a reduction agent compared to the conventional recycling of the secondary aluminum foil.

AB - The aim of this study was comparative analysis of catalysts with 5 and 20 wt.% Ni loading, with and without Pd additive, and it included: determination of reduction degrees, investigation on microstructure by scanning electron microscopy and chemical analysis by energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Ni/Al2O3 and Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts supported on alpha-Al2O3-based foams were synthesized by aerosol assisted impregnation. Impregnation of the foams by ultrasonically aerosolized chlorides was followed by drying at 473 K and hydrogen reduction at 533 and 633 K. Lower Ni loading resulted in higher reduction degrees. Ni loading of 20 wt.% enabled relatively uniform coverage of the foam with a metallic coating. Nearly complete reduction was achieved at both temperatures with activity modifier (Pd). Reduction degrees reached 99.4 and 98.2 wt.% at 533 K for 5 and 20 wt.% of Ni, respectively.

Applying the model (Aloha software package) provides an overview of possible developments of events and zones of propagation of the precipitated particulate matter through the share of cadmium (Cd) in them. In the case of malfunction of filter system, emissions of particulate matter enormously exceed the permitted values. In the conditions of the simulated accident, particle velocity of flue gases was amounted E ≈ 738 mg/s or 2657 g/h of dust. The propagation of the precipitated particulate matter in the lower layer of the atmosphere, downwind, given trough the share of Cd in them, is 100 m from the source of pollution for the characteristic density of 5 mg/m2×day and 140m for the characteristic density of 2 mg/m2×day, in the stable state of the atmosphere, i.e. 870 m and 1100 m, respectively, in the neutral state of the atmosphere.

AB - Presented compilation of scientific, theoretical and experimental results, promotes an innovative synergy of various metals and industrial activities in metallurgy, resulting in profitable transformation of byproducts and waste materials into resources. Focusing on treatment of specific by-products from zinc and copper primary production, as well on specific waste streams like WEEE and waste automotive catalysts, group is actively contribute to the Serbia, region and EU sustainability policies. In terms of sustainable development, metallurgy is a traditional part of the solution rather than part of the problem, so it is necessary to take the chance and centuries-old tradition.
