AB - The aim of this paper is to present the application of
thin-walled beams on cargo raft load-bearing structure from
the aspect of strength and reliability. The beams have an
open cross section. Analytical and numerical determination
of equivalent stresses and deformations of open section thinwalled ‘U’ and ‘Z’ cantilever beams, loaded with torsion, is
presented. Work is divided into three parts. In the first part,
equivalent stress and deformation are obtained analytically
for cantilever beam model in the whole cross section. In the
second part, the finite element method is applied in beam
models, and the results are compared with the analytical
calculation. The third part presents the profiles installed in
load-bearing structures of vessels (rafts) and solutions are
shown to apply results of the presented analyses in order to
increase reliability. Finally, the design calculation of the raft
load-bearing structure is shown.
AB - Cilj ovog rada jeste da prikaže primenu tankozidih nosača
na noseće konstrukcije teretnog splava sa aspekta čvrstoće
i pouzdanosti.

AB - Nowadays, unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) are mainly obtained from non-renewable resources. The ever-increasing regulations and the continuous demand for more sustainability have led to extensive research towards more environmentally suitable alternatives to petroleum-based materials. However, one of the main disadvantages of bio-based UPR is their relatively high viscosity compared to petrochemical ones. In order to overcome this drawback, in this work, we investigated the possibility to lower the resin viscosity utilizing a mixture of dimethyl itaconate (DMI) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a reactive diluent. The effect of the DMI and MMA ratio on resin rheological properties was investigated. The optimal curing parameters were determined and all UPRs had a high gel content, which was shown to be dependent on the DMI and MMA ratio in the formulation. Furthermore, thermomechanical and mechanical properties of the resulting network were also found to be affected by the used reactive diluent mixture. A small substitution of DMI by MMA proved to be advantageous since it offers lower resin viscosity and improved mechanical properties.

AB - The adsorption of Ni2+ ions from water solutions by using hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and itaconic acid (IA) was studied. Hydrogel synthesis was optimized with response surface methodology (RSM). The hydrogel with the best adsorption capacity towards Ni2+ ions was chosen for further experiments. The hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis before and after the adsorption of Ni2+ ions. Batch equilibrium experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of solution pH, hydrogel weight, ionic strength, adsorption time, temperature and initial concentration of nickel ions on the adsorption. Time-dependent adsorption fitted the best to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. A thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption was an exothermic and non-spontaneous process. Five isotherm models were studied, and the best fit was obtained with the Redlich-Peterson model. Consecutive adsorption/desorption studies indicated that the HEA/IA hydrogel can be efficiently used as a sorbent for the removal of Ni2+ ions from the water solution. This study develops a potential adsorbent for the effective removal of trace nickel ions.

AB - In the first part of this work hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and itaconic acid P(HEA/IA) were prepared by free radical cross-linking copolymerization. In order to investigate the influence of the hydrogel composition on heavy metal sorption efficiency, series of the hydrogels with different amount of the itaconic acid were prepared (2.0, 5.0, 7.0 i 10.0 mol %). The swelling kinetics was carried out in buffers of different pHs and in destiled water. Further, the samples were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In the second part of this work, the P(HEA/IA) hydrogels were investigated as potential sorbents for removal of Pb2+, Cd2+ i Ni2+ ions from aqueous solution. In order to evaluate sorption behavior of samples various factors affecting the uptake of heavy metal ions behavior, such as: contact time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, sorbent weight, competitive ions and initial concentration of the metal ions were investigated. Five adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Temkin i Dubinin-Raduskevich) and two kinetic models were studied (Lagergren pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetics). The sorption process in multicomponent heavy metal ion system was also investigated, since the natural and industrial effluents rarely contain a single heavy metal ion, and some of the ions in the effluent may reduce the sorption of others or may be co-adsorbed along with other ions. At the end, desorption and the potential reausability of P(HEA/IA) hydrogels was examined. All results indicate that the P(HEA/IA) hydrogels could be used as promising sorbents for the removal of Pb2+, Cd2+ i Ni2+ ions from aqueous solution due to their high sorption capacity, good mechanical properties and possibility of reuse.

AB - A series of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-co-itaconic acid), P(HEA/IA), hydrogels with different HEA/IA ratio, were synthesized using free radical crosslinking/copolymerization and investigated as sorbents for Pb2+ from aqueous solutions. Hydrogels were characterized using DMA, FTIR, DSC, SEM and AFM. The adsorption was found to be highly dependent on hydrogel composition, solution pH, sorbent weight, ionic strength and contact time. Five isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich, were applied to the sorption data. The best fit was obtained with Redlich-Peterson isotherm. The separation factor, RL, value indicated favorable sorption for Pb2+. The maximum sorption capacities were 392.2 and 409.8 mg/g for P(HEA/2IA) and P(HEA/10IA), respectively. Kinetic data showed best fit with pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the reaction was exothermic and proceeds with a decrease in entropy. Moreover, P(HEA/IA) hydrogel showed the most pronounced sorption toward Pb2+ from environment containing Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Co2+. Sorption/desorption experiments, showed that the P(HEA/IA) hydrogels could be reused without significant loss of the initial properties even after three adsorption-desorption cycles.

Sorption/desorption experiments, showed that the P(HEA/IA) hydrogels could be reused without significant loss of the initial properties even after three adsorption-desorption cycles.",

AB - In order to evaluate biological response and potential toxicity prior to clinical use as wound dressing materials, three series of hydrogels, based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and itaconic acid (IA), unloaded, with incorporated copper(II) ions and reduced copper, were subjected to cytotoxicity testing on L929 cell line (mouse fibroblasts). MTT test revealed proper fibroblast growth in the presence of tested hydrogels, with an absence of any acute toxic effects. Mechanical properties of all three hydrogel series were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and obtained results indicated dominant elastic over viscous behaviour, which supports their application in wound management. The temperature sensitive behaviour of the hydrogels was detected in swelling study conducted in wide range of temperature values 25-50 degrees C, in buffer pH 7.40. The hydrogels exhibited excellent microbial barrier characteristics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, reducing the risk of bacterial infection in wound bed.

AB - Series of novel dual-sensitive poly(2-hydroxypropyl acrylate/itaconic acid) hydrogels were designed as multifunctional drug delivery system which can provide several advantages including drug protection, self-regulated oscillatory release and targeted delivery to a single entity. The hydrogels were synthesized by the free-radical crosslinking copolymerization and evaluated as carriers for hydrophobic drug, Oxaprozin, with specific controlled release properties. Structural, morphological, thermal, surface charge, swelling and antimicrobial properties of the hydrogels were investigated for unloaded and Oxaprozin-loaded samples. Swelling studies demonstrated pH- and temperature-sensitivity of drug-free and drug-loaded P(HPA/IA) hydrogels. The results of swelling and oscillatory swelling, and swelling behavior of drug-free, and drug-loaded hydrogels in simulated gastrointestinal conditions, and in vitro Oxaprozin release studies confirmed these hydrogels as a highly effective colon-specific drug delivery system with excellent performance of long-term controlled release. These unique properties make the P(HPA/IA) hydrogels highly attractive materials for developing multifunctional drug delivery systems.

AB - In this study, a series of novel stimuli-sensitive hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and itaconic acid monomers were designed for the controlled release of hydrophobic drug, Oxaprozin. All samples were synthesized by the free-radical crosslinking copolymerization and characterized for structural, morphological, thermal, surface charge, swelling and antibacterial properties. In order to investigate the influence of the drug on hydrogel properties the same characterization was conducted for all Oxaprozin-loaded samples. The chemical composition of hydrogels was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while their morphology and thermal properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Swelling studies, conducted in the physiological pH range from 2.20 to 8.00 and in the temperature range from 25 to 50 degrees C, showed that the loaded drug does not modify the pH and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogels, but reduces their swelling capacity. The in vitro drug release study conducted at pH 2.20 and 7.40 showed that all hydrogels can be tailored as colon specific drug delivery systems, and the drug release rate can be effectively controlled by IA content. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the hydrogels was determined against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, by the zone of inhibition test. Results of our study indicate that these "smart" hydrogels, with specific morphology, surface charge, swelling capacity, drug loading efficiency and release behavior, could be designed to obtain an enhanced and site-specific controlled drug release system by simply adjusting their composition.

The hydrogels before and after Cd2+ adsorption were characterized using FTIR, temperature sensitive. In order to evaluate adsorption behavior of samples various factors affecting the Cd2+ uptake behavior, such as: contact time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, adsorbent weight, competitive ions and initial concentration of the metal ions were investigated. Five adsorption isotherms and two kinetic models were studied. The adsorption behavior can be very well described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. Multicomponent adsorption studies revealed that adsorption of cadmium depends on the type of metal ions present in the system. Desorption studies showed that hydrogel can be reused three times with only 15% loss of adsorption capacity. All results indicate that the sample with the highest IA content is the most promising adsorbent for Cd2+ removal.

AB - In this study, three series of hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and itaconic acid, unloaded, with incorporated copper(II) ions and reduced copper, were successfully prepared, characterized and evaluated as novel wound healing materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the expected structure of obtained hydrogels. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed porous morphology of unloaded hydrogels, and the morphological modifications in case of loaded hydrogels. Thermal characteristics were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the glass transition temperatures were observed in range of 12-50 degrees C. Swelling study was conducted in wide range of pHs at 37 degrees C, confirming pH sensitive behaviour for all three series of hydrogels. The in vitro copper release was investigated and the experimental data were analysed using several models in order to elucidate the transport mechanism. The antimicrobial assay revealed excellent antimicrobial activity, over 99% against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, as well as good correlation with the copper release experiments. In accordance with potential application, water vapour transmission rate, oxygen penetration, dispersion characteristics, fluid retention were observed and the suitability of the hydrogels for wound healing application was discussed.

AB - Novel hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), itaconic acid (IA) and different poly (alkylene glycol) (meth)acrylates (PAGM) (P(HEMA/IA/PAGM)) were synthesized. We investigated the influence of different PAGM components, with acrylic or methacrylic acid residues in the main chain and ethylene glycol (EG) and/or propylene glycol (PG) units in pendant chains of varying length, on the nature and inherent properties of P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) copolymeric hydrogels. Swelling studies revealed pH sensitive behavior of P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) samples. Hydrogel structure and morphology were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which confirmed their chemical structure and differences in pore size. The shear modulus values for P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) hydrogels were close to that of PHEMA, but slightly lower than the value for P(HEMA/IA). Cephalexin (CEX) drug release profiles from P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) samples showed a marked dependence on the PAGM component. The presence of IA also influenced the release rate of CEX, leading to a faster release when IA was combined with the more hydrophilic PAGM component. An in vitro assay of P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) cytotoxicity showed good cell viability. The results obtained indicate that P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) hydrogel properties were significantly dependent on the PAGM component, meaning that the type of side chains can be used to tune the characteristics of such biomaterials. These properties make P(HEMA/IA/PAGM) copolymeric hydrogels applicable in biomedical and biotechnological fields and controlled drug delivery.
