AB - The corrosion behaviour of three types of alloys (two low-alloy carbon steel and one stainless iron with ~15 wt.% Cr), in a solution which simulates seawater (3% NaCl solution, pH 8.1) was tested. Tested samples are used to make steel (iron) balls applied in mils for grinding copper and other ore. The corrosion tests were performed using three electrochemical methods, at room temperature in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. The linear polarization resistance (LPR) method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method, and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) method were applied. Based on measurements by LPR and EIS methods (as non-destructive methods), the value of polarization resistance (Rp) was determined and the general corrosion rate (vcorr) of the examined samples was calculated. The obtained values of the general corrosion rate can be used to calculate the service life of steel (iron) balls under exploitation conditions (seawater). The appearance of the surface after linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurement showed the presence of localized corrosion (pits were formed) of the tested samples, especially stainless iron, and the LSV method is not suitable for the determination of the general corrosion rate of tested samples in seawater. This form of corrosion occurs at high anodic polarizations, during performing LSV measurements.

AB - The AISI 304 (X5CrNi19-10) stainless steel is widely used for the production of various metal parts in power plants. A procedure for testing the influence of the dust from a power plant on resistance to general and pitting corrosion of the AISI 304 stainless steel is developed and performed. The quantitative (XRD method) and qualitative (Fourier–transform infrared spectroscopy [FTIR] method) composition of the dust present in the power plant is determined. Applying the Mott–Schottky method, the properties of the passive layer are analyzed, while a degree of chromium depletion of the grain boundary is determined by the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation method with double loop method. Values of polarization resistance (linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods) and the corrosion current density (polarization measurements) indicate that the stainless steel has a higher resistance to general corrosion in the dust solutions than in the etalon solution. Also, based on the measured value of the pitting potential (Epit) and the difference between the values of the pitting potential and the corrosion potential (Epit – Ecorr), it can be seen that stainless steel has a higher resistance to localized types of corrosion, such as pitting corrosion, in dust solutions than in the etalon solution.

AB - The inhibitory effect of cysteine in the presence of selected lanthanide chlorides (LaCl3, NdCl3, and CeCl3) in a neutral 0.1 M NaCl solution was analyzed. The cysteine concentration of 0.3 mM was determined as an optimal one. The resistance to general and pitting corrosion of AA7075-T6 alloy in inhibitive solutions was determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The surface appearance of the aluminum alloy was determined before and after corrosion tests using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, while the presence of an inhibitory layer on the alloy surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and atomic force microscopy. The inhibitory effect of cysteine was significantly higher in the presence of all tested lanthanide chlorides, especially to pitting corrosion. The protective ability of cysteine was increased by lanthanides in the following sequence: Ln < Nd < Ce ions. The inhibitory effect of cysteine in the presence of cerium ions was examined in more detail as cerium ions provided the highest inhibitory effect, both to general and pitting corrosion.

AB - Green corrosion inhibitors, Ce(III) chloride, Ce(III) nitrate, and Ce(III) propionate, were tested in NaCl solution with the aim to evaluate their inhibitory effect on 7049 aluminum alloy and to propose a mechanism of their inhibitive action. Corrosion properties of the formed inhibitor layer were analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, while the pit formation resistance was analyzed using potentiodynamic polarization tests. Morphology of the formed pits was evaluated by scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis. It was shown that Ce(III) propionate in NaCl solution has a noticeably higher protective ability than Ce(III) chloride and Ce(III) nitrate. The presence of cerium, propionate anions, and Al–O bonds in the inhibitive layer on the 7049 aluminum alloy surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. This indicates the formation of Ce propionate complexes and bonds via oxygen atoms from carboxylate anions with the metal surface. Density-functional theory methods were used for the geometry optimization of possible Ce propionate complexes as corrosion inhibitors.

AB - The new environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor Ce-citrate was analyzed in 0.05 M NaCl solution on the AISI 4130 steel. For comparison, corrosion inhibitor Ce-chloride is tested in the same concentration as Ce-citrate (0.3 mM). Inhibitor efficiencies were determined by applying electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The results of electrochemical measurements, the contact angle measurements, as well as the surface appearance of the specimens after the immersion in the inhibitive NaCl solution for 96 h confirmed that the new environmentally friendly inhibitor (Ce-citrate) has a significantly higher protective ability than the Ce-chloride. The protective ability of Ce-citrate increases over time, according to the proposed mechanism of its action. In the inhibitive layer formed in NaCl solution containing Ce-citrate, XPS analysis revealed the presence of cerium in oxidation states CeIII and CeIV, citrate anions (carboxyl O–C═O group as well as C–OH and C–C and C–H bonds), oxide, hydroxide, and oxyhydroxide of iron (mainly FeOOH and Fe2O3). The mechanism of inhibitory action of Ce-citrate was proposed and analyzed in detail.

AB - This study considers the corrosion behavior of the X5CrNi18 10 stainless steel-welded joint in NaCl solution, with and without the presence of several corrosion inhibitors (NaNO3, Ce(NO3)(3), and CeCl3). The degree of sensitization of the welded joint to intergranular corrosion is determined using the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation method with a double-loop method. Pitting corrosion tests are performed by the potentiodynamic method. Resistance to general corrosion and the stability of the passive film is assessed based on the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, as well as on the values of the corrosion and passivation current. The main goal of this study is to determine the relation of the welded joint microstructure to general and pitting corrosion in the presence of the corrosion inhibitors. The value of pitting potential for the base metal and weld metal in the presence of the NaNO3 or Ce(NO3)(3) inhibitor is shifted to potentials in the transpassive area. The pitting potential for the heat-affected zone also possesses a noticeable higher value. However, nitrate ions do not increase the general corrosion resistance of any part of the welded joint. CeCl3 does not increase resistance to general or pitting corrosion.

AB - Aluminium AA7075 alloy with its low density and good mechanical properties, widely responds to the requirements of aerospace, navy, and defense industries. However, corrosion is the most common problem that affects the reliability and service life of components and constructions based on this alloy. One of the most practical methods for protecting metals from corrosion is the use of inhibitors. Chromates are known as excellent inhibitors but chromate compounds are highly toxic, carcinogenic, and thus hazardous to humans and the environment. The aim of this study was to synthesize an organic eco-friendly compound (cerium-cysteine) and to investigate its inhibitory property on aluminum alloy AA7075-T6. Rare-earth metals are effective and environmentally friendly substances for aluminium protection as well as cysteine that can be found in many proteins and enzymes such as the keratin in hair. The synthesized inhibitor was confirmed and analyzed by FTIR. The survey of samples corrosion resistance was conducted by three electrochemical methods: linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and polarization measurements (Epit) in a 0.1M NaCl solution at room temperature. Different concentrations of ceriumcysteine were used to find the best efficiency. The best results were then tested for time dependence (up to 72 h). The inhibitory effectiveness of the cerium complex is shown to depend on a variety of factors such as concentration and time dependence.

AB - The paper analyses the corrosion behaviour of both naturally and artificially aged AA2024 aluminium alloy in NaCl solution in the presence of the corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA). The differences between these two aging tempers in terms of resistance to general corrosion are explained as well as the differences in terms of pit formation and pit growth. Based on the values of the polarisation resistance and the corrosion current density, the general corrosion resistance of the alloy is determined in the absence and in the presence of BTA. The resistance to pit formation and pit growth is determined on the basis of the polarisation measurements results. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the expected differences in the appearance and size of the pits formed in naturally aged and artificially aged alloy. In the presence of the corrosion inhibitor BTA, for both aging tempers of the alloy, the corrosion resistance is significantly higher compared to the resistance in the solution without the inhibitor. The value of the polarisation resistance for both aging tempers increases over time. However, at the same time, the value of the constant phase element increases as well. An explanation for this phenomenon is provided. The calculated average value of the thickness of the adsorbed inhibitor layer on the surface of the aluminium alloy is in accordance with the inhibitor protective ability for both aging tempers. AB - The classic methods of cleaning old-fashioned textile museum objects with metallic yarns do not often yield expected results. The use of laser in the conservation of these objects plays an important role as a very efficient and ecologically friendly technique. Conservation and restoration of historical exhibits with metal-textile combinations is becoming ever more complex due to a huge variety of damaging factors. The paper presents the results of the corrosion laser cleaning effects on ethnographic textile with silver coated copper yarns from the holdings of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, using Nd:YAG laser. The testing of the cleaning effects was performed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The chemical analysis of yarns was done by the EDX and XRD analyses. The parameters for successful and safe cleaning of corrosion products on metallic yarns were determined.

AB - The main aim of this paper is to present the results of the morphological and chemical changes on the surface of a ceramic sample irradiated by the Nd:YAG laser. The tested sample is a part of an aqueduct tile, originating from the archaeological site of Yazd, Iran. The laser irradiation effects were studied as a function of the number of laser pulses and laser fluences around and over the damage threshold. The obtained modifications were investigated because these are essential in laser cleaning of aqueduct ceramics. The Nd: YAG laser with a wavelength, lambda, of 1064 nm and full width at half maximum (FWHM) pulse, tau, of 150 ps has been used for the surface treatment. The ceramic surface morphology modifications, induced by laser, were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the composition was examined by energy-dispersive (EDX) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. The results show that there are significant differences depending on the applied laser fluences and whether the surface is glazed or not.

AB - This paper presents the results of the laser cleaning effects on textile samples with corroded metallic threads. In many museum collections, there are textile exhibits like uniforms, national costumes, flags and home textile, embroidered with metallic threads. Corrosion of metal threads is one of the most common problems that damage embroidered items. In the practice, the application of conventional cleaning methods rarely gives the expected results, and the implementation of laser technology was the next step for corrosion products cleaning. The Nd: YAG laser was used to clean the corrosion of embroidered items from a museum study collection. The effects on the laser irradiated zones were investigated by optical and SEM microscopy and the EDX analysis. The laser irradiation process parameters of the metal threads corrosion.
