AB - A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups, the epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of the membranes. Dynamic adsorption of rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate the suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for the membranes functionalized with sodium sulfite and the membranes grafted with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid compared to the non-functionalized membranes.

AB - Asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles comprising crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a traditional liquid phase inversion process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. Scanning electron microscope images of the membrane cross-section revealed a hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the porous polyethersulfone support. Permeation of toluidine blue solutions through non-functionalized membranes showed a dramatic effect of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid concentration in the casting solution on the dynamic adsorption performance. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of dilute Cu2+ solutions through functionalized membranes demonstrated that the plate height for some of these membranes was an order of magnitude smaller than for commercial particle-filled membranes used in solid phase extraction.

AB - Novel polyethersulfone membranes with integrated submicron adsorbent particles were prepared by combining photoirradiation with liquid phase inversion. These particles consist of cross-linked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid), pGMA-AMPS. After membrane preparation, the epoxide groups were reacted with diethylene triamine to incorporate amine functionalities. Membranes were characterized using FTIR-ATR, SEM and dynamic adsorption of copper from a dilute solution. Effects of monomer concentrations on the properties and separation performance of membrane adsorbers are presented.

AB - Membrane adsorption has started to replace fixed bed chromatography for separation and purification of small quantities of valuable species in biotechnology and related areas. Membrane functionalization is usually required to introduce affinity groups for these applications. In this work novel membranes adsorbers were prepared by combining liquid phase inversion with photopolymerization of the solution comprising polyethersulfone, glycidyl methacrylate, sodium salt of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid and a cross-linker. Membranes were characterized using SEM, AFM, FTIR, titration and water permeability measurements. Dynamic adsorption of Toluidine blue as a model dye was used to demonstrate suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption.

AB - Polyethersulfone (PES) is frequently used for high-performance ultrafiltration membranes. Functionalization of PES membranes is required to introduce new groups for specific applications, such as affinity membranes for bioseparations [1]. Functionalization methods include bulk modification of PES material, blending of PES with another material, or surface modification of PES membranes [2]. In this work a novel method for introducing functional groups in asymmetric PES membranes is presented [3]. A cast film comprising PES, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and a common solvent was exposed to UV irradiation to form a gel of crosslinked polyGMA. The gel was then immersed in a water bath to create an asymmetric membrane with crosslinked polyGMA particles, as shown in Fig. 1. A simple treatment of these membranes with diethylene triamine was used to open the epoxide rings in polyGMA particles and introduce amine functional groups. The effects of monomer concentrations on the properties and separation performance of these novel membrane adsorbers will be presented.

abstract = "Polyethersulfone (PES) is frequently used for high-performance ultrafiltration membranes. 1. AB - Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are currently used in industry for the concentration of proteins and other macromolecules. Performance of UF membranes is generally limited by a trade-off between permeability and selectivity [1]. However, electrically-charged ultrafiltration membranes can provide a dramatic improvement in ultrafiltration performance [2]. Novel UF membranes were made by combining traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization of the casting solution comprising polyethersulfone, glycidyl methacrylate and other reactive monomers. Negative charges were introduced either by initially using 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid as a reactive monomer, or were later created by epoxide ring opening of crosslinked glycidyl methacrylate. As shown in Fig. 1, selectivity of these membranes significantly improved as the concentration of negatively-charged groups in the membrane increased. The effects of membrane composition on the properties and separation performance of these novel UF membranes will be presented.
