AB - The current study investigated the concentrations, possible sources, toxicity, and ecological risk of eight heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) and sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments in the port of Prahovo (Danube, Serbia). Among the examined HMs, the most abundant was Cu (38.3 mg/kg), followed by Zn. The Σ16PAHs concentrations ranged from 25 to 112.5 µg/kg, with 4-ring PAHs (17.3 µg/kg) being the most dominant in the study area. The mean and maximum values of HMs and PAHs obtained in this study were below the national regulatory limits and within environmental criteria. Particularly significant correlations between As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, 5-, 6-ring PAHs, as well as between Pb and Hg, indicated their similar anthropogenic sources, pathways, and adsorption mechanisms. These findings were confirmed by cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Diagnostic ratios demonstrated that contamination in inner port stations was characterized by pyrogenic sources, while PAHs of petrogenic origin prevailed in samples near the port entrance. The mean ERM quotient (mERMq), toxic risk index (TRI), and toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ) were also calculated to assess the toxicity of the investigated HMs and PAHs in sediments. Positive matrix factorization suggested four potential sources as the main components of sediment contamination, whereas the risk assessment indicated a low or relatively insignificant risk of adverse biological effects from the combined toxicity of HMs and PAHs for the entire study area.

AB - In this paper, the main subject concerns comparing different techniques to prepare raw clay samples for energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). Three kinds of sample preparation procedures are examined, such as loose powder, pressed pellet, and fired pressed pellet. The fired pressed pellet approach was observed as a part of universal sample preparation for physic, mechanical, and instrumental analysis, which has not been previously tested as a solution in chemical analysis by the EDXRF method. The observed sample preparation techniques were compared by calculating the parameters of validation (recoveries, limit of detection - LOD, limit of quantification - LOQ, precision, and expanded uncertainties of measurements) of 11 elements (Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Ti, P, Mn, and S) using 15 certified reference materials (CRMs). Calibration curves were created and evaluated using 30 reference materials (RM) for all three approaches. Results proved that the fired pressed pellet is the most practical and precise approach for sample preparation of raw clays.

AB - The chemical compositions of refractory materials, such as high-alumina concrete, bricks, and putty, were analyzed using an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDXRF). An improved methodology for investigating the effect of particle size on the outcomes of EDXRF chemical analysis is presented. Eight independent refractory samples (refractory concrete, brick, and putty) were pulverized utilizing seven milling times (30, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 s) and compared to non-pulverized samples. Thus, sixty-four refractory samples were obtained and analyzed using EDXRF. The method for measuring the fundamental EDXRF characteristics was then tested with ten certified reference materials. The acquired data were compared using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Univariate and multivariate statistics are used to evaluate EDXRF data. The particle size of the tested samples affected the z-scores of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, and P2O5 concentration measurements. Grinding times for refractory concrete, brick, and putty samples were determined in order to validate the robustness of the EDXRF technique and provide reliable chemical analyses. The ideal milling times for the samples studied ranged from 180 to 360 s, depending on the type of refractory material.

AB - The surface sediments sampled from forty sampling sites in the Boka Kotorska Bay, starting from
October 2005 to December 2019, were analysed for the content of ten heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr,
Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe). Five complex indices (pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological
risk index (RI), mean ERM quotient (MERMQ), toxic risk index (TRI), contamination severity
index (CSI)) were determined for each site in the study period (2005, 2007, 2013, 2019), and
statistically examined by principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). In the
semi-enclosed Bay, which consists of four smaller bays (Kotor, Risan, Tivat, Herceg Novi bays), a
spatio-temporal comparison of sediment quality was carried out using PCA and CA analysis of the
considered pollution indices. Statistical results revealed that the increased environmental risk in
2005 was observed in the bay of Kotor; in 2007 was in the bay of Tivat and Risan; in 2013 in the
bay of Kotor and Tivat; and in 2019 was in the bay of Tivat, particularly at the shipyard site Bijela.
The PCA and CA analysis highlighted that the sediment contamination in Kotor bay decreased from
2005 to 2019, while at the same time increased in Tivat bay, which is an indication of pollution due
to urbanization and population growth in this part of the Bay. The results gave a statistical overview
of the similarities between the pollution indices and the differences in the degree of sediment
pollution in the Bay during the last two decades.

AB - This study collected agricultural surface soil samples from 200 sites in the district of Braničevo, located in the Carpathian Mountains – Pannonian Basin south of the Danube River (Serbia). The main objective was to determine the soil contamination by ten potentially toxic elements (As, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn) and evaluate the associated ecological risk via different indices. The physicochemical parameters, pH, organic carbon, water content, and soil texture were also analyzed. The mean values of most metal concentrations remained below their corresponding national target values, except for Mo and Ni. The main soil texture types were silt loam (40.5 %) and silty clay loam (34.5 %). According to the mean values, pollution load index (PLI) and potential ecological risk (RI) demonstrated that the soil in the study area was exposed to moderate pollution and moderate ecological risk, while enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and contamination factor (CF) revealed very high enrichment and contamination with Mo, implying the impact of anthropogenic activities. There was a lack of strong correlations among elements and soil properties, except for Cd and Corg, while moderate to strong positive inter-metal relationships suggested their common sources. The chemometric analysis illustrated the classification of sampling sites into two distinct clusters of spatial similarities according to higher and lower metal concentrations. Geospatial mapping identified a few areas of considerable ecological risk. © 2022,Carpathian Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences. All Rights Reserved.

(As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe) of surface sediments in the period 2005-2019.
Environmental risk assessment was performed by comparative analysis of pollution indices, such as
pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), mean ERM quotient (MERMQ),
toxic risk index (TRI), and contamination severity index (CSI). The average contribution of
individual metals in the total environmental risk showed the following order: Cd > Hg > As > Pb >
Ni > Cu > Cr > Zn. Accordingly, Cd represented a concern of the highest priority for the Bay
ecosystem due to its high toxicity. The results indicated that Hg concentrations showed a declining
trend in the period from 2005 to 2019. Referring to the results of all applied pollution indices, it was
established that the highest pollution was identified in 2019, particularly at the shipyard site S4,
while the lowest pollution was recorded in 2005 and 2013. The spatial distribution of pollution
indices for each investigated year revealed the most polluted sediments at sites S4 and S10 in Tivat
bay. These findings provide insight into the comparison of different indices in assessing the
sediment quality in the Boka Kotorska Bay over the last two decades.

AB - Surface sediment from the Boka Kotorska Bay (Adriatic Sea) was analyzed for the content of technogenic cesium (137Cs) and naturally occurring (40K, 226Ra, 232Th, 238U) radionuclides. The activity concentrations of the radionuclides have been correlated with the major elements (Si, Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Ti, P, Mn) content of sediment samples. The spatial interpolation identified primordial radioactivity more pronounced in the inland of the bay. Correlation and hierarchical cluster analyses clearly distinguished 226Ra, 232Th, and 238U from 137Cs. In addition, a strong association between primordial radionuclides and most major elements was found. Positive matrix factorization apportioned technogenic and natural radionuclides sources, while Si and Ca were separated from other elements. Radiological hazard parameters (Raeq, D, AEDE, Hin, Hex, AGDE, AUI) that include the doses and indices, and the excess lifetime cancer risk indicate that the risk in the studied area due to gamma radiation is within the acceptable level.

AB - Concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Fe measured at forty locations in the Boka Kotorska Bay were used to monitor the spatial and temporal quality of sediment and to assess surface sediment contamination over the last 15 years. This ecological geochemistry assessment was made using two classes of pollution indices: single indices concerning the investigated elements (contamination factor (Cf)) and integrated indices concerning the locations (pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), mean effects range median quotient (MERMQ), toxic risk index (TRI), contamination severity index (CSI)). The distribution of all indices was geostatistically mapped and several hotspots were identified. Based on the indices applied in the risk assessment, the mean contribution of individual metal species to the total risk was determined and presented in the following order: Cd > Hg > As > Pb > Ni > Cu > Cr > Zn. This study revealed that Cd and Hg were at the top of the risk list among the examined elements. The temporal distribution of Hg has shown a decreasing trend during the period 2005-2019, while the presence of Cd in the Bay environment is of major concern. The results revealed that the most polluted part of the investigated area was Tivat bay within the Boka Kotorska Bay. Multivariate statistical analysis of pollution indices resulted in multicollinearity, which enabled the use of a reduced number of indices with an acceptable risk estimation.

AB - Surface sediments collected from twelve stations in the Boka Kotorska Bay were analyzed for the level and distribution of twenty-six elements and ten oxides, grain sizes, organic matter, and carbonate content. Potentially toxic elements (Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, As, Co, U) were determined to assess the contamination status and potential environmental risk according to the single-element indices (enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF)), and combined index (pollution load index (PLI)). The single-element indices EF and CF revealed that the surface marine sediment was moderately polluted with Pb, Cu, and Cr, while Igeo indicated moderate pollution with Ni > Cr > Zn > Cu > As and moderate to heavy pollution with Pb, as a result of the anthropogenic factors. The method of the combined effect of toxic elements, PLI, showed the highest pollution rate at the shipyard location in the Bay of Tivat. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r), principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis (CA) were applied to highlight similarities and differences in the distribution of the investigated elements in the Bay, confirming the claim obtained by the pollution indices. The sediment contamination with most heavy metals, such as Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, and As, has been identified in the Tivat Bay area.

AB - Soil samples from the site of the former largest paint and varnish factory in ex-Yugoslavia were analyzed for arsenic and eight heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe, and Hg). Several additional soil properties (pH, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, and water content) were also measured. Multivariate analysis showed strong correlations between Pb and Zn; and a moderate correlation between Cu and Ni. There was no correlation between heavy metals and any of the analyzed soil properties parameters. A factor analysis grouped most heavy metals, except Cd, which showed different behavior, and Fe and As, which associated with soil properties. The soil samples were clustered into two distinctive groups. Positive matrix factorization receptor modeling clearly identified Zn and Pb as belonging to the traffic vehicle factor. The second factor dominating arsenic was industrial chemical emissions, while the third factor containing most of the heavy metals was attributed to natural background variation. The last non-metallic factor, dominated by sulfur, was the result of past activities in the paint facility. The average enrichment factor values were for the metals analyzed were: 0.73; 0.71; 2.4; 0.58; 2.3; 0.87; 1.6; and 0.76; for Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, and Hg, respectively. Only moderate soil enrichment by Pb and Zn was found. The geoaccumulation index values showed a moderately polluted soil with Pb and Zn, but most contributing to the ecological risk were Cd with 63% and Hg with 19%. These two metals are of major concern in this case study due to their high toxicity, even though they are present at very low concentrations. Generally, a moderate ecological risk was estimated for most soil samples, except for a small number of high-risk samples. Spatial distribution mapped three severely polluted sub-areas. In general, the paint and varnish industry moderately contributes to the contamination of soil. The main ecological risk from metal contamination is not related to the paint technological production process itself, but from other activities at the site that deposit of heavy metals into the soil.

AB - Ovo istraživanje sprovedeno je u Bokokotorskom zalivu radi procene kvaliteta površinskog
sedimenata, a time i stanja morske sredine.
AB - This study was carried out in the Bay of Boka Kotor in order to assess the surface sediment
quality and thereby to evaluate the status of the marine environment. The method of
elementary analysis, ED-XRF was used to determine the content of elements and oxides in
surface sediments sampled at 12 stations in 2019. Multivariate statistical methods, such as
principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were used to analyse the data
in order to obtain a comprehensive distribution of the examined elements according to
locations in the bay, and their origin, as well as similarities/differences of samples in chemical
composition.

AB - Rare earth metals are deemed to be the materials of future due to their numerous applications including medical diagnostics, nuclear facilities, petroleum industry, etc. In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which possess unique physicochemical properties, were evaluated as sorbents for lanthanoid gadolinium from aqueous solutions. The pH-dependent sorption behavior of Gd was studied in the pH range from 3 to 11 at room temperature (298 K). Equilibrium data over a range of initial Gd concentrations of 5−50 mg L−1 was analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson models. Sorption kinetics was fitted with the pseudo-first-order, the pseudo-second-order and fractional power kinetic models.
AB - Retke zemlje se smatraju materijalima budućnosti zahvaljujući
svojim brojnim primenama, u koje spadaju medicinska dijagnostika, nuklearna
postrojenja, naftna industrija, itd.
Frojndlihovim i Redlih‒Petersonovim modelima. Kinetika sorpcije analizirana
je modelima pseudoprvog reda, pseudodrugog reda i frakcionog stepena.

AB - The concentrations of Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Zn, and Hg were studied in Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from the coastal area of Montenegro. The impact of seawater temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, total organic carbon (TOC), and metal content in sediment samples on the metal contents in mussels collected from three locations in four different seasons was analyzed by a Pearson correlation coefficient (r), principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis (CA). These analyses were used to discriminate groups of samples, elements, and seawater parameters, according to similarity of samples chemical composition in different seasons, as well as the impact of seawater parameters and surface sediment composition on the mussels' element concentrations. Synergistic interactions occurred between seawater TOC, Fe, and Al concentrations in mussels. Compared with other studies, which are usually performed under constant laboratory conditions where mussels undergo only one stress at a time, this study was performed in nature. The analyses showed the importance of considering simultaneously acting environmental parameters that make determining of separate impacts of each factor selected very difficult and complex.

AB - In order to assess human health risks via consumption of potentially toxic mussels, the concentrations of Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Zn and Hg were studied in Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from the coastal area of Montenegro. By two approaches for the human health risk assessment (HHRA), considering oral reference doses by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and provisional tolerable intakes by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), it has been revealed that despite the fact that trace element levels do not exceed the defined limits for mussels, they can be limiting factors for the mussel consumption. Specifically, it was noticed that the levels of Co, Pb, Cd and Li could be the limiting factors for the consumption of mussels from this coastal area. Al and Li data obtained in this study are especially important since these two elements have not been previously studied in M. galloprovincialis. Furthermore, taking into account the significant differences in concentrations of elements in different seasons, the study confirmed the starting assumption that in the calculations for the HHRA the average concentrations of elements in samples taken in different seasons during a longer period should be used.
