AB - The possibility of using waste tailings produced by flotation in the lead and zinc mine of Grot, Serbia as a potential source of secondary mineral raw materials was examined. The aim of the research was primarily to carry out a detailed characterization in order to determine the dominant minerals, and, for the first time, to trace the changes occurring in the unit cells of the minerals present in that deposit. There was also a need to determine the exact proportions of the present mineral phases for their further application and utilization as natural resources in environmental protection. Samples were taken from three different sections of tailings: the crest of dam (JKB), outlet pipe of the flotation facility (JOF) and hydrocyclone overflow (JHC). Granulometric separation was performed to facilitate the extraction of certain minerals from waste. The results showed that all samples mainly contained quartz, clinochlore, calcite, albite, pyrite and biotite, but their ratios in each sample varied significantly. After characterization, samples were separated into different fractions and their mineralogical compositions were determined. Depending on the fraction, the mineralogical compositions also changed. Mineralogy and geochemical analysis indicate that waste tailings can be used as a secondary mineral raw materials source applicable in various industries.

AB - Waste vitreous enamels from the heating device production process were used for partial replacement of cement in the mortar and concrete production industry. This waste, due to the high content of heavy metals, is classified as hazardous waste. At the same time, waste vitreous enamels possess pozzolanic activity and belong to class 15 (WEP—generated during the production process of heating devices, premix technology), that is 5 (WETM—generated during the production process of heating devices, classic technology) of pozzolanic materials. The purpose of this research was to develop new composites from these wastes to reduce the deposition of the toxic compounds and reduce their environmental impact. The chemical and physical-chemical characterization and pozzolanic activity of the raw waste materials were studied by a mixture of complementary methods, as well as physical-mechanical characterization and a leaching test of mortar and concrete composites. The results indicate that the replacement of cement with WEP up to 30%, or with WETM up to 20% does not significantly affect the quality of concrete in comparison to the quality of the reference concrete prepared with 100% cement. The leaching test showed no significant release of toxic elements for both obtained composites.

AB - Alumina/YAG composites (AYX_t) with high relative density (99.2 %TD) were successfully obtained by mixing commercial alumina powder with different volume fractions of yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3Al5O12-YAG; 7, 14, 21 and 28). YAG was synthetized by nitrate glycine reaction in the form of precursor powder. Polycrystalline YAG powder was obtained by calcination at 950 degrees C for 2 h. Additionally, obtained compositions were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. By XRPD analysis was found that the particle size of YAG powders lies in the nanometric range (being lower than 35 nm). By SEM microphotographs of composites were confirmed the formation of a conductive path consisting from mutually interconnected YAG particles. This was confirmed by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The highest electrical conductivity of grain (K-g) and grain boundary (K-gb) at 700 degrees C amounted to 2.22x10(-2) ohm(-1)cm(-1) and 9.44x10(-3) ohm(-1) cm(-1), respectively, was measured in the composite containing 21 vol% of YAG.

AB - In presented paper, influence of temperature, precursor concentration and different hydroxides on properties of activated carbon obtained from saccharose were investigated. The samples were prepared by hydrothermal treatment and activated using KOH, NaOH and DOH. Two saccharose concentrations (0.5, 1.0 mol/dm(3)) and three temperatures (160, 200, 240 degrees C) were changed in hydrothermal treatment. Activation processes were performed at 750 degrees C under N-2 atmosphere. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry, elemental analysis, N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis. The obtained samples were tested for potential application in dyes removal from water solutions.

AB - In this study, carbonization products of grape pomace (hydrochar and process water) have been thoroughly characterized in order to assess its fuel properties, physico-chemical composition and to optimize its production. The obtained detailed insight into transformations of the biomass during hydrothermal conversion between 180-220 degrees C revealed that the hydrochar obtained at 220 degrees C exhibits a considerable energetic potential, increased porosity and re-adsorption abbility. Hydrothermally induced structural changes in the obtained hydrochars were unveiled by thermal and morphology analysis, FTIR and NIR spectroscopy. Temperature increment caused a decrease in antioxidative capacity, anthocyanin and organic acid content in process water and simultaneous increase in total phenolic and individual organic components content. The overall effect of the reaction temperature on products characteristics was assessed by multivariate data analysis. Obtained results substantiated the suitability of hydrothermal conversion of grape pomace into highly valuable fuels and versatile products.
