AB - The esters of substituted 1,4-dihydropyirdines (1,4-DHP) are formed in the reaction of an appropriate aldehyde and ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of concentrated water solution of ammonia. The esters form the amides by the reaction with primary amines. The series of the amides has been synthesized with the aim to analyze their chemical characteristics, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The amine used in this research is 2-aminothiazole. The antioxidant activity is analysed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) methods and the antimicrobial activity screening was performed by broth microdilution method, using different microbial strains. The characterization of the obtained amides was done by melting points, FTIR, NMR and elemental analysis. The possibilities for further research was suggested, which could lead to the application of selected compounds.

AB - Every microorganism represents a biothermodynamic system, characterized by an empirical formula and thermodynamic properties of biosynthesis. Gibbs energy of biosynthesis influences the multiplication rate of a microorganism. In case of a mixed culture (microbial consortia) biosynthesis processes of microbial species are competitive. This is why Gibbs energy of biosynthesis determines the growth in a mixed culture. This paper gives a mechanistic model that explains growth of microorganisms in mixed culture and ability to grow in microbial consortia. Detailed biosynthesis reactions were formulated for the first time for five microorganism species, which include metallic elements. Moreover, thermodynamic properties of live matter and biosynthesis were calculated for the first time for five microorganism species and macromolecules.

AB - TiO2 powder was synthesized by a forced hydrolysis process and used for the synthesis of Pt/TiO2 composite that is to be foreseen as an advanced electrode material. Pt was incorporated into the synthesized TiO2 from a Pt colloidal dispersion as a precursor prepared by a microwave- assisted polyol process. Physicochemical properties of TiO2 and TiO2- supported Pt were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and X- ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques. The properties of Pt/TiO2 composite are correlated to the basic voltammetric response of its thin-layer form. It was found that subsequent thermal treatment of synthesized TiO2, which caused crystallization into mainly rutile phase, is required for appropriate Pt incorporation. Although being appropriately loaded by Pt, and the voltammetric response is typical for Pt-based material, the voltammetry of Pt/TiO2 corresponded to much lower loadings. The possibility for Pt particles to be trapped inside TiO2 agglomerates is indicated. The catalyst usage from the synthesized Pt/TiO2 was found quite moderate due to this trapping.

AB - A simple one-step microwave-assisted and temperature-controlled hydrothermal synthesis was applied to prepare a nanocrystalline RuO2 dispersion from an aqueous solution of RuCl3 for supercapacitive applications. The obtained RuO2 dispersions were subjected to dynamic light scattering in order to analyze the particle size distribution, whereas morphology and structural properties of the solid phase were investigated by using AFM, SEM, EDX, TEM, and XRD techniques. Ellipsoidally shaped 100-500 nm-sized compact grains, joined into highly ordered prismatic agglomerates, are observed. Two types of grains are observed: more regular ones consisting of spherical, amorphous particles of a few nanometers in size, and irregular ones made of partially crystalline 10-80 nm-sized particles. Consequently, the most dominant structure is 250-nm grains. The particles tend to join tightly across their crystalline domains, which appears responsible for the formation of prismatic shapes of several micrometers. This arraying causes high capacitive activity - specific capacitances of up to 800 Fg(-1) are registered, which negligibly depend on the charging/discharging rate. The synthesized material is of highly accessible internal structure, and is an excellent candidate for both low- and high-power applications.

AB - For the preparation of RuO2 coatings on Ti substrate, the RuO2 was synthesized in acidic aqueous medium by simple one-step low temperature-controlled microwave (MW) irradiation. The physical composition of synthesized solid phase was analysed through particle size distribution (PSD), whereas the coating was investigated for its capacitive response and activity in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The oxide phase was found highly polydisperse, with overlapped fractions within rather narrow particle size range and clear tendency toward agglomeration. The smallest particles and their best resolved fractions were synthesized at the temperature just above the boiling point of the reaction medium, and quite below the chloride-to-oxide conversion temperature. Consequently, the highest OER activity was registered for RuO2/Ti anodes prepared from this sample, with strong indication of different oxide structure, with respect to the electrodes prepared from samples synthesized at higher temperatures. However, the coatings from high temperature samples have considerably higher capacitance than those synthesized at lower temperatures. These findings can be rather correlated to the MW temperature-dependent oxide structure than to different morphology analysed through PSD.

AB - Handkea utriformis (HU), H. excipuliformis (HE) and Vascellum pratense (VP) mature fruiting bodies methanol extracts were tested for biological activities and active compounds. The extracts showed prominent radical scavenging, reducing, antioxidative and chelating abilities. Scavenging ability was correlated with phenolic (ABTS assay) or phenolic and/or sugar/beta-glucan content (DPPH). Antioxidative and Fe3+-reducing ability of VP extract was the highest, and was best correlated with flavonoid content. The same extract exhibited the best angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity. HU and HE showed selectivity toward tumor cell lines in cytotoxicity analysis. The extracts exhibited various antimicrobial activity, the best being against Listeria monocytogenes (HE, MIC-0.625 mg/mL); fatty acid content was particularly high in HU (37.25 mg/g), with linoleic acid making up more than 57% in all samples. Phenolics were present in considerable amount, as well as beta-glucans (HU, 16.67%). Although these mushrooms are inedible after autolysis process, they were still a good source of biologically active products.

AB - One-step simple temperature-controlled microwave synthesis was applied to prepare nanocrystalline RuO2 dispersion from aqueous RuCl3. RuO2 dispersion was subjected to dynamic light scattering in order to analyze the synthesized particles, whereas structural and morphological properties of the solid phase are investigated by AFM, SEM, EDAX and XRD techniques. The ordered unusual shape of ca. 100-nm native particles, as well as highlyordered prismatic agglomerate sheets are observed. Capacitive properties of RuO2 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 1 M H2SO4 and standard three-electrode cell, with ink-type working electrode on glassy carbon substrate A specific capacitances as high as 750 F/g were obtained, which negligibly depend on sweep rate in 5–500 mV/s range. These findings are quite unusual for this kind of material consisted of rather large particles, and makes it excellent candidate for both low and high power applications. The capacitive response appears stable during prolonged charge/discharge cycling.

AB - Ultraviolet absorption spectra of three isomeric pyridinecarboxylic acids (picolinic, nicotinic, and isonicotinic acids) were measured in 18 various solvents, in the wavelength range from 200 to 400 nm. In order to analyze the solvent effect on the obtained absorption maxima, the ultraviolet absorption frequencies of the electronic transitions in the carbonyl group of the examined acids were correlated using a total solvatochromic equation in the forms nu(max) = nu(0) + s pi(*) + a alpha + b beta and nu(max) = nu(0) + s pi(*) + b beta, where nu(max) is the absorption frequency (1/nu(max)), pi(*) is a measure of the solvent polarity, alpha represents a scale of the solvent hydrogen bond donor acidity, and beta represents a scale of the solvent hydrogen bond acceptor basicity. Correlation of the spectroscopic data was carried out by means of multiple linear regression analysis. The effects of two different solvent types on the ultraviolet absorption maxima of the examined acids were compared and discussed.

AB - The ultraviolet absorption spectra of the carboxyl group of three isomeric pyridine carboxylic acids N-oxides (picolinic acid N-oxide, nicotinic acid N-oxide and isonicotinic acid N-oxide) were determined in fourteen solvents in the wavelength range from 200 to 400 nm. The position of the absorption maxima (λmax) of the examined acids showed that the ultraviolet absorption maximum wavelengths of picolinic acid N-oxide are the shortest, and those of isonicotinic acid N-oxide acid are the longest. In order to analyze the solvent effect on the obtained absorption spectra, the ultraviolet absorption frequencies of the electronic transitions in the carboxylic group of the examined acids were correlated using a total solvatochromic equation of the form Vmax = V0 + + Sπ*+ aα+ bβ, where Vmax is the absorption frequency (1/λmax), π*is a measure of the solvent polarity, β represents the scale of solvent hydrogen bond acceptor basicities and α represents the scale of solvent hydrogen bond donor acidities. The correlation of the spectroscopic data was carried out by means of multiple linear regression analysis. The solvent effects on the ultraviolet absorption maximums of the examined acids were discussed.
