AB - Cementation is the baseline technology for conditioning of low to intermediate level radioactive waste. Geopolymers, a class of alkali activated binders, are a promising new material for radioactive waste treatment. Coal fly-ash based geopolymers are a low-cost, low greenhouse gas footprint alternative to metakaolin based materials. Both the grouting of sludge/powders/liquids and encapsulation of solids/compacted waste rely on the grout maintaining optimal flow (theological properties) during the mixing and pouring operations, and achieving a set leading to proper long term solidification (mechanical properties). The initial and final setting time for fly-ash geopolymer paste, based on the SRPS EN 196-3 standard, has been measured upon irradiation by gamma rays in a Co-60 reference field positioned with a kerma air rate of 3.42 mGys(-1). The binder paste was prepared using fly-ash from the TENT B power plant's electrostatic filters without further sieving, activated by water glass with module 1.5 and mixed with distilled water until a satisfactory flow was obtained, and poured into the sample and control molds. The initial and final setting times for the irradiated sample and non-irradiated control were determined by the Vicat apparatus. The irradiated sample demonstrated an 11 % shorter initial setting time, and 16 % shorter final setting time, compared to the control.

AB - This work presents a characterization of radiation absorption properties of silicon carbide (SiC) as semiconductor for the realization of detectors for X-rays. SiC detectors can potentially reach superior performance with respect to all the other semiconductors presently employed in hazardous environments in nuclear and space science and technology. Physics and numerical modeling of photons transport through SiC detector is incorporated in non-destructive Monte Carlo method for determining the energy deposited and dose distribution. The Monte Carlo code has been adopted for numerical simulations for different detector conditions and configurations. The X-ray characterization of new SiC structures originates the improving of design of these detector systems.

AB - The waste red mud, remaining in remarkable quantities after the digestion of bauxite ores following the Bayer process, contains number of voluble minerals with excellent sorption properties towards aqueous heavy metals. Heating at 600 degrees C was found to be a favorable treatment for revalorization of rinsed red mud into an efficient Ni2+ sorbent (RBRM600). As potential practical application of RBRM600 for Ni2+ accumulation greatly depends on the solution composition and pH, the influence of these vital process variables was considered in this study. The initial pH rise from 2 to 3.5 caused the most evident increase in the amounts of Ni2+ removed: furthermore, the effect was more obvious for lower initial sorbate concentrations. Conversely, changes of the solution pH between 3.5 and 8 did not have a significant influence on the sorption. The increase of initial cation concentration caused the increase of the sorbed amount. following Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated maximum sorption capacity of 27.54 mg/g demonstrated capacity increase of approximately 20% in respect to inactivated rinsed red mud. Coexisting cations inhibited Ni2+ removal in the following order: Cu2+ gt Pb2+ gt = Zn2+ gt Cd2+ gt gt Ca2+, whereas the presence of Na+ and K+ did not affect the process. The investigated anions caused decrease of Ni2+ removal efficiency in the order: EDTA gt chromate gt acetate gt sulphate, however, fluoride slightly improved sorption. Low desorption of Ni2+ in various media showed that the heavy metal cations are tightly bound to RBRM600 surface, thus disposal or reuse of spent sorbent should be considered.

AB - This paper presents new results obtained by investigations of silicon carbide (SiC) based vertical Double Implanted Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (DIMOSFET). The results are described and presented by the analytical model of drift region voltage and its impact on SiC DIMOSFET current-voltage characteristics. The drift region is devided into sections. For each of them, voltage analytical model across the corresponding section is developed. Mobility dependence model on temperature and electric field is introduced. Finally, current-voltage characteristics are obtained, by using drain to surce voltage model which incorporate the mentioned partial voltages. Proposed model is based on the physics of the SiC DIMOSFET. Significant effects are taken into account, thus the model is accurate. At the same time exposed model is relatively simple. By using developed model simulations were performed. The obtained results are in very good agreement with already known and published ones..

AB - Red mud, an abundant industrial waste from alumina industry, represents a rich source of various metal oxides, mainly of Fe2O3 Al2O3 and SiO2. In this study, the rinsed Bosnian red mud (RBRM) was evaluated as an economical, composite sorbent for aqueous Ni2+ ions. The process was investigated as a function of pH, contact time and initial metal concentration. The investigated mineral mixture exhibited a high acid neutralising capacity, and its most important role in cation immobilization was observed in the initial pH range 2-8. The initial metal ion concentration strongly influenced the sorption kinetics and equilibrium times. Addition of 5 g/L of RBRM caused 100% removal from the solutions of 10(-4) to 5 x 10(-4) mol/L, whereas with the further increase of Ni2+ concentration to 8 x 10(-3) mol/L, the removal efficiency decreased to 26%. The maximum sorption capacity of 0.372 mmol/g, at initial pH 5, was determined using Langmuir theoretical model. The possibility of sorption efficiency improvement by annealing RBRM powder was investigated in the range 200-900 degrees C and the relationships between temperature, red mud physicochemical and sorption properties were established. The optimum heating temperature was found to be 600 degrees C, due to water exclusion from gibbsite and bayerite phases, leading to improved porosity and surface area, as well as increased pH value and sorption efficiency. The stability of the sorbed cation was assessed by leaching experiments in distilled water and acidic TCLP2 solution.

AB - This paper discusses the mechanisms of gas breakdown at low values of pressure and inter-electrode gap, i.e. in the vicinity of the Paschen minimum. In this area of pressure and inter-electrode gap values, breakdown occurs either through gas or vacuum mechanisms, and also the so called anomalous Paschen effect appears. Electrical breakdown of electropositive, electronegative and noble gases has been investigated theoretically, experimentally and numerically. Based on the results obtained, regions in which particular breakdown mechanisms appear have been demarcated. Special attention has been devoted to the anomalous Paschen effect as well as to the avalanche vacuum breakdown mechanism.

AB - This paper examines the reliability of commercial off the shelf (COTS) erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) and electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) components exposed to gamma radiation. Results obtained for 64 KB EPROM (NM27C512) and 16 KB EEPROM (M24128) components provide evidence that EPROMs have greater radiation hardness than EEPROMs. Moreover, the changes in EPROMs are reversible, and after erasure and reprogramming all EPROM components restore their functionality. On the other hand, changes in EEPROMs are irreversible. The obtained results are analysed and interpreted on the basis of gamma ray interaction with the oxide layer.

AB - The aim of this paper is to find the possibility for improvement of gas-filled surge arresters (GFSA) characteristics in y and X radiation field by appropriate choice of electrode materials. For that purpose electrodes made of different materials were incorporated in the originally developed GFSA model. The obtained results show that both in y and X radiation fields, copper electrodes are an optimal solution, since they have the highest resistance to radiation effects. It is also shown GFSA are highly resistant to y radiation, but that X radiation leads to significant degradation of their characteristics.

AB - This paper investigates the validity of the similarity law in cases of dc and pulse breakdown of gases. Geometrically similar systems insulated with SF6 gas were used during experiments. It is shown that the similarity law is valid for dc breakdown voltage if the electron mean free path is included in geometrical parameters of the system, but not for pulse breakdown voltages. The explanation for this is the mechanism of the pulse discharge. The similarity law was expanded to take into account mechanisms of pulse breakdown initiation. Thus, the general similarity law is obtained, the validity of which in case of a pulse breakdown is established experimentally.

AB - Gas filled surge arresters (GFSA) has working point close to minimum on Paschen curve. Below that point breakdown follows Townsend's mechanism, i.e. the secondary processes on the electrodes dominate the secondary processes in the gas. The most important parameter of GFSA is its pulse shape characteristic. The main problem in GFSA application is its delayed response. The built-in radioactive sources cause the significant improvement of GFSA characteristic. On the other hand, the use of GFSA with radioactive filling would be some-what danger to the environment. Specific problems arise from inade-quate procedure regulating for storage and destruction for GFSA with radioactive filling. The narrower the pulse characteristic is, the smaller response time is, i.e. the better protective characteristic of GFSA is. The aim of this paper is to present the electrode effects as approach for the improvement of GFSA protective characteristics in the most optimal way. In that purpose, we examined the influence of the electrode parameters on the pulse shape characteristics. As variable parameters, we used the electrode material and the manner of electrode surface processing. The electrodes were made either of copper, of aluminum or of electrons. The materials with higher values of output work corresponds larger pulse shape characteristics. In the case of investigation the influence of the manner of processing electrode surface on pulse shape characteristics, the electrodes were made of brass with polished, sand-processed or engraved. By applying the "area law" it is possible to determine the pulse shape characteristic based on single series of measurements (using single shape of the pulse voltage). An original analytical algorithm has been developed to determine and compare characteristics of GFSA for a pulse shape characteristic.
