AB - To produce well-defined metal clusters stabilized in protective matrix, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNi-PAAm) hydrogel with different initial concentration of polymer was used as nanoreactor. The in situ synthesis of well dispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was performed by gamma irradiation. The obtained AgNPs are spherical in shape with the diameter less than 20 nm. Crystalline properties of nanoparticles such as size, texture coefficient, strain, stress, lattice parameter, d-spacing, and dislocation density have been calculated using XRD data. Results confirm that the changes of lattice parameter of crystalline AgNPs sensitively reflect their state of strain and stress depending on the formation conditions (i.e., on the concentration of PNiPAAm) and on the diameter of AgNPs. The negative lattice strain and compression stress were observed for the smaller AgNPs (lattice contraction), while for the larger AgNPs are positively strained and under tensile stress (lattice expansion). XPS spectra revealed the donor-acceptor type of interaction between carbonyl oxygen from PNiPAAm and AgNPs (positive shift of high BE component of O 1s and negative shift of Ag 3d BE). The greater dislocation density of smaller AgNPs incorporated in more concentrated PNiPAAm, resulted in more binding sites and stronger interaction with polymer.

AB - Thermo- and pH-sensitive Ag-P(NiPAAm/IA) hydrogel nanocomposites were prepared by in situ reduction of Ag+ ions with gamma irradiation. P(NiPAAm/IA) copolymer hydrogel matrices have been previously synthesized by radiation induced copolymerization. The copolymer composition was determined by elemental analysis of the dried gels, and was found to be close to that of the feed. The dependence of swelling properties and phase transitions on the IA comonomer content, temperature, pH values and presence of AgNPs were investigated. The hydrogels showed both thermo- and pH responses. By introducing small amounts of IA, swelling capacity increase, and the volume phase transition temperature (VPIT) of P(NiPAAm/IA) copolymers is transferred to higher values. Presence of AgNPs causes decrease of equilibrium swelling degree and VPIT, and allows of fine-tuning of these properties. Both the average values of compressive elastic modulus and Young's modulus of elasticity were decreased by addition of IA as a consequence of looser structure of the network (increase in molar mass between two neighboring crosslinks and decrease in effective crosslinking density). The introduction of AgNPs promoted not only improvement of these mechanical parameters, but an improvement of stress at failure especially in the systems with the highest content of IA. In addition, Ag-P(NiPAAm/IA) hydrogel nanocomposites showed good antibacterial potentials.

AB - Silver nanoparticles were produced inside a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) hydrogel (PVP) by an innovative method based on the electrochemical reduction of Ag+ ions within the swollen PVP hydrogel. UV-visible spectroscopy showed the highest value of the absorbance intensity and the lowest values of the wavelength of the absorbance maximum and the full width at the half-maximum absorbance for the Ag/PVP nanocomposite obtained at 200 V during 4 min. Cyclic voltammetry results suggested an adequate entrapment of the silver nanoparticles. The mechanical properties under bioreactor conditions of the Ag/PVP nanocomposite suggested the possibility of wound dressing application. Silver release from Ag/PVP nanocomposites was confirmed under static conditions as well as by their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. POLYM. COMPOS., 35:217-226, 2014.

AB - A nanosilver (nano-Ag)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel device was synthesized with irradiation because it is a highly suitable tool for enhanced nano-Ag technologies and biocompatible controlled release formulations. The amount of the Ag+ ions released in vitro by the nano-Ag/PVA hydrogel device was in the antimicrobial parts per million concentration range. The modeling of the Ag+ ion release kinetics with the elements of the drug-delivery paradigm revealed the best fit solution (R-2 gt 0.99) for the Kopcha and Makoid-Banakar's pharmacokinetic dissolution models. The term A/B, derived from the Kopcha model, indicated that the nano-Ag/PVA hydrogel was mainly an Ag+-ion diffusion-controlled device. Makoid-Banakar's parameter and the short time approximated Ag+-ion diffusion constant reflected the importance of the size of the Ag nanoparticles. However, it appeared that the cell oxidation potential of the Ag nanoparticles depended on the diffusion characteristics of the fluid penetrating into the Ag/PVA nanosystem.

AB - Silver/poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Ag/PVP) nanocomposites containing Ag nanoparticles at different concentrations were synthesized using gamma-irradiation. Cytotoxicity of the obtained nanocomposites was determined by MU assay in monolayer cultures of normal human immunocompetent peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) that were either non-stimulated or stimulated to proliferate by mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA), as well as in human cervix adenocarcinoma cell (HeLa) cultures. Silver release kinetics and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were investigated under bioreactor conditions in the simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C. The release of silver was monitored under static conditions, and in two types of bioreactors: perfusion bioreactors and a bioreactor with dynamic compression coupled with SBF perfusion simulating in vivo conditions in articular cartilage. Ag/PVP nanocomposites exhibited slight cytotoxic effects against PBMC at the estimated concentration of 0.4 mu mol dm(-3), with negligible variations observed amongst different cell cultures investigated. Studies of the silver release kinetics indicated internal diffusion as the rate limiting step, determined by statistically comparable results obtained at all investigated conditions. However, silver release rate was slightly higher in the bioreactor with dynamic compression coupled with SBF perfusion as compared to the other two systems indicating the influence of dynamic compression. Modelling of silver release kinetics revealed potentials for optimization of Ag/PVP nanocomposites for particular applications as wound dressings or soft tissue implants.

AB - Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in situ by gamma-irradiation using poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a capping agent. The concentration, molecular weight and the structure (crosslinked and interpenetrated network) of PVP were varied, in order to determine the influence of the capping agent in the radiolytic synthesis of the Ag/PVP nanosystems. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that AgNPs obtained from the solutions containing higher PVP concentration and higher molecular weight were spherical in shape, with narrow size distribution and a diameter of similar to 6 nm, while slightly larger rod-shaped silver agglomerates, with bimodal nanoparticle size distribution and diameters of similar to 10 nm and similar to 20 nm were obtained from the solutions containing lower PVP concentration and lower molecular weight. Strong plasmon coupling and extending of plasmon resonance was observed by UV-vis spectroscopy, as a result of formation of nanorod-like agglomerates. Crosslinked and interpenetrated network did not affect the structure of synthesized AgNPs. Ag/PVP nanocomposite, in the form of thin film, was obtained by solvent evaporation from Ag/PVP colloid solution with 10 wt% of PVP, and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The interactions in Ag/PVP nanocomposite are shown to be the result of the coordination bonding between AgNPs and nitrogen from pyrrolidone ring of PVP. The optical properties of investigated Ag/PVP nanosystems, as measured by the values of optical band gap, E-g, are mainly the consequence of the interparticle distance as a result of the concentration and the structure of surrounding PVP macromolecules.

AB - This work describes radiolytic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) within the poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) hydrogel. The hydrogel matrix was obtained by gamma irradiation-induced cross-linking, while the in situ reduction of Ag+ ions was performed using strong reducing species formed under water radiolysis. Absorption spectrum of the Ag/PVP nanocomposite confirmed the formation of Ag NPs, showing the surface plasmon band maxima at 405 nm. Ag/PVP nanocomposites were characterized by XRD and TEM analysis, accompanied with investigations of swelling and diffusion properties in the simulated body fluid at 37 degrees C, and mechanical properties in bioreactor conditions. It was shown that Ag/PVP nanocomposite exhibited higher values of equilibrium swelling degree, Young's modulus, and molar mass between crosslinks, while lower values of the diffusion coefficient and effective crosslink density were obtained, as compared to the pure PVP.

AB - Silver/poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Ag/PVP) nanocomposites were obtained by electrochemical reduction of Ag+ at a constant voltage, by in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles inside a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) matrix, previously cross-linked by g-irradiation. Optimal values of synthesis parameters were investigated: the composition of the solution for swelling of PVP hydrogel, implementation time and applied voltage. Ag/PVP nanocomposites were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, and IR spectroscopy. UV-Visible spectroscopy results showed that the reduction of silver ions was more efficient when the more conductive solution for swelling of PVP hydrogel was used, i.e., the solution containing 3.9 mM AgNO3 with 0.1 M KNO3. It was also shown that the concentration of the reduced silver increases with the increase in implementation time and applied voltage, up to values of 4 min and 200 V, respectively. The Ag nanoparticle size was estimated to be 25 nm, by comparison of the experimental results of UV-Vis spectroscopy with the theoretical predictions obtained by the calculations in 'MiePlot v.3.4' software, having the algorithm based on Mie scattering from a sphere. The results of FTIR spectroscopy have shown that Ag nanoparticles were mainly bonded to PVP by coordination bondages between Ag nanoparticles and N from the pyrrolidone ring of PVP.

AB - Hydrogel nanocomposites of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and crosslinked poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) were synthesized in situ by a novel electrochemical method. PVPhydrogels, crosslinked by gamma-irradiation, were swollen in the solution containing0.1 M KNO3 and 3.9 mM AgNO3. PVP polymer matrix nanocavities were used asnanoreactors for AgNPs synthesis. The reduction of silver cations was performed usingtwo-Pt-electrode electrochemical cell. The polarity of the electrodes was changed on thehalf of the implementation time, enabling the Ag+ ions reduction in the bulk. Cyclicvoltammetry (CV) was performed in a three-electrode electrochemical cell, using thesaturated calomel electrode (SCE) as a reference. Ag/PVP nanocomposites werescanned by CV immediately after the synthesis and after drying followed by reswelling in0.1 M KNO3. Ag/PVP was compared with CVs of the following systems: Pt electrode in0.1 M KNO3; Pt/PVP system in 0.1 M KNO3; Ag/Pt system in 0.1 M KNO3 + 3.9 mMAgNO3 solution.

AB - Electrochemical synthesis of nanosized monetite powder was performed galvanostatically from homogeneous Solution of Na(2)H(2)EDTA center dot 2H(2)O, NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 at a concentration relationship Ca/EDTA/PO43- of 0.25/0.25/0.15 M at current density of 137 mA cm(-2) and pH value of 5.0. The synthesized monetite powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, size distribution measurements, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Monetite powder was electrophoretically deposited on titanium from ethanol Suspension, using constant voltage method. The deposition was performed at constant voltage between 10 and 50 V and for a constant deposition time between 1 and 30 min. The influence of the applied voltage and deposition time on the mass and morphology of monetite deposits was investigated. It was shown that monetite deposits of the highest thickness and the lowest porosity can be formed at lower applied voltage (30 V) and for longer deposition time (20 min) and then converted to hydroxyapatite.

AB - Electrochemical synthesis of hydroxyapatite powders was performed galvanostatically from homogeneous solution of Na(2)H(2)EDTA center dot 2H(2)O, NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 at a concentration relationship Ca/EDTA/PO43- of 0.25/0.25/0.15 M at current densities of 137 and 207 mA cm(-2) and pH values of 9.0 and 12.0. The hydroxyapatite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, size distribution measurements, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The influence of the electrochemical synthesis parameters, e.g. applied current density and pH value, on the phase composition, crystallite size, morphology and thermal characteristics of hydroxyapatite powders were investigated.

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties and adhesion of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on aluminum pretreated by vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) were investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl. The VTES films were deposited on aluminum surface from 2% and 5% vinyltriethoxysilane solution. The electrochemical results showed that the pretreatment based on VTES film deposited from 5% solution provides enhanced barrier properties and excellent corrosion protection. The values of diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating on this substrate and water content inside the epoxy coating were the smallest, indicating the low porosity of the coating. In addition, the good adhesion was maintained throughout the whole investigated time period.

AB - The corrosion behavior, sorption characteristics and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on mild steel (MS) and mild steel with electrochemically deposited polyaniline (PANI) film were investigated in 3% NaCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Electrochemical deposition of PANI film on mild steel was performed from aqueous solution of 0.5 M sodium benzoate and 0.1 M aniline at constant current density of 1.5 mA cm(-2). Epoxy coatings on mild steel and mild steel with PANI film were deposited at constant voltage. It was shown that during initial time of exposure to 3% NaCl, PANI/epoxy coating system on mild steel has lower values of pore resistance (obtained from EIS), greater amount of absorbed water and lower thermal stability (obtained from TGA) which indicate more porous structure comparing to epoxy coating on mild steel. During prolonged exposure to 3% NaCl, PANI/epoxy coating system exhibited increased corrosion protection of mild steel comparing to epoxy coating due to the barrier effect of PANI film and the influence of the dissolved molecular oxygen on cathodic and anodic reaction. Differences between corrosion behavior of epoxy coated and PANI/epoxy coated mild steel in acid and neutral solutions has been discussed.

AB - Boehmite aqueous sol was prepared by the peptization of Al(OH)(3). The solid phase, obtained by drying the prepared aqueous sol, was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (pseudoboehmite was confirmed), thermogaravimetric analysis (the water content in the pseudoboehmite solid phase and the starting formula of pseudoboehmite, Al2O3 center dot 1.82H(2)O, were calculated) and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of the applied voltage and deposition time on the electrophoretic deposition of boehmite coatings on titanium from aqueous sol was investigated. The deposition was performed at constant voltage between 1.0 and 10 V and for a constant deposition time between 10 and 30 min. An increase in the applied voltage and deposition time increased the mass of the boehmite deposit, its welt as the amount of evolved hydrogen, causing a more porous structure. It was shown that boehmite coatings of maximum thickness, low porosity and good adhesion can be formed at lower deposition voltage and longer deposition time.

AB - The corrosion behavior and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on mild steel and on mild steel with electrochemically deposited polyaniline (PANI) film were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The aim of the paper was to present new findings on the corrosion protection of mild steel by a duplex PANI/-epoxy coating in 3% NaCl solution and to determine the effect of thin PANI film on the protective properties of the coating. PANI film was deposited electrochemically on mild steel from an aqueous solution of 0.5 mol dm-3 sodium benzoate and 0.1 mol dm-3 aniline at a constant current density of 1.5 mA cm-2. Non-pigmented epoxy coatings on mild steel and on mild steel with PANI film were obtained by cathodic electrode position at constant voltage and stirring conditions. The resin concentration in the electrode position bath was 10 wt.% solid dispersion in water at pH 5.7. The applied voltage was 250 V, the temperature 26°C and the deposition time 3 min. It was shown that thin PANI film could be used to modify the surface of mild steel prior to epoxy coating deposition, due to the increased corrosion protection of a duplex PANI/epoxy coating comparing to an epoxy coating on mild steel in 3% NaCl solution.

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (anodized, phosphatized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium) have been investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl solution. From the results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), gravimetric liquid sorption experiment and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) it can be concluded that electrochemical and transport properties of epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium are significantly improved with respect to the same epoxy coatings on aluminium and phosphatized aluminium: higher values of pore resistance and charge-transfer resistance and lower values of coating capacitance and double-layer capacitance, from EIS; smaller values of diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating, from sorption measurements and smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coating, from TGA. On the other hand, the somewhat lower thermal stability of these coatings was obtained.

AB - Epoxy coatings were formed by cathodic electrodeposition of an epoxy resin on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (phosphatized, chromatized-phosphatized and anodized aluminium) using a constant voltage method (resin concentration 10 wt.%, temperature 27 degrees C, applied voltage 250 V). The corrosion behavior of these coatings was investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization measurements. From the dependence of resistance, capacitance and relative permittivity of the coating, obtained from EIS, on the rate of hydrogen evolution reaction in the electrodeposition bath, obtained from polarization curves, it can be observed that the epoxy coating on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces is a good barrier against the transport of corrosive agents. The time corresponding to contact between electrolyte and aluminium surface under the coating is greater in the case of surface modification by chromato-phosphatized and anodized aluminium than in the case of phosphatize one.

AB - Epoxy coatings were electrodeposited on steel and steel modified by Zn-Fe alloys using the constant voltage method. Zn-Fe alloys were electrodeposited on steel at different current densities. The effect of the Zn-Fe alloy on the corrosion behavior of the epoxy coating was interpreted in terms of the electrochemical and transport properties. It was shown that the best properties, i.e. the largest values of the pore resistance and the smallest values of the coating capacitance, a longer period of almost constant Rp and Cp values, and the smallest diffusion coefficient of water through the epoxy coating, as well as the smallest amount of water absorbed inside the epoxy coating, were found for epoxy coatings on steel modified by a Zn-Fe alloy deposited at 4 A dm-2. During prolonged exposure to 3% NaCl, this Zn-Fe alloy significantly improves the corrosion stability of the epoxy coating: almost unchanged values of Rp and Rct were observed, due to the formation of a pseudo-passive layer of corrosion products, which is a good barrier to the transport of water, oxygen and electrolyte ions.

The Zn-Fe alloys were deposited on steel surface from alkaline bath galvanostatically using different current densities. From the time dependence of pore resistance of epoxy coating (impedance measurements), diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating (gravimetric liquid sorption measurements) and water content in the epoxy coating (thermogravimetric analysis), it was shown that Zn-Fe sublayer could improve the corrosion stability of the protective system based on epoxy coating. The values of the pore resistance were almost unchanged over the long period of immersion time for epoxy coating on steel modified by Zn-Fe alloy deposited by 4 A dm(-2), indicating the great stability of this protective system. The values of diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating on this alloy and water content inside the epoxy coating were the smallest, indicating the low porosity of the coating.

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on aluminium and modified aluminium surfaces (anodized phosphatized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium) have been investigated in 3% NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) gravimetric liquid sorption experiment and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Higher values of pore resistance and charge-transfer resistance and lower values of coating capacitance and double layer capacitance were observed for epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized and phosphatized aluminium. Smaller values of diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating from sorption measurements and smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coatings from TGA were obtained for coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium. AB - The corrosion behaviour and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on modified aluminum surfaces (anodized, phosphatized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminium) were monitored during exposure to 3% NaCl solution, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Better protective properties of the epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum with respect to the same epoxy coatings on aluminum and phosphatized aluminum were obtained: higher values of Rp and Rct and smaller values of Cc and Cd, from EIS, and a smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coating, from TGA. On the other hand, a somewhat lower thermal stability of these coatings was obtained (smaller values of the ipdt temperature). This behavior can be explained by the less porous structure of epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum, caused by a lower rate of H2 evolution and better wet ability.

AB - The corrosion behavior of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on aluminum, as well as on electrochemically and chemically modified aluminum were investigated during exposure to 3 % NaCl. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used for the determination of the protective properties of epoxy coatings on aluminum, anodized aluminum, phosphatized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum. The protective properties of epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum are significantly improved with respect to the same epoxy coatings on aluminum and phosphatized aluminum: higher values of the pore resistance and charge-transfer resistance, lower values of the coating capacitance, double-layer capacitance and relative permittivity (from EIS) smaller amount of absorbed water inside the coating (From TGA). On the other hand, the lower values of the ipdt temperature indicate a lower thermal stability of the epoxy coatings on anodized and chromatized-phosphatized aluminum.
AB - Proučavano je koroziono ponašanje epoksidnih prevlaka dobijenih kataforetskim taloženjem na aluminijumu i elektrohemijski i hemijski modifikovanom aluminijumu tokom delovanja 3 % rastvora NaCl. Za određivanje zaštitnih osobina epoksidnih prevlaka na aluminijumu, anodiziranom aluminijumu, fosfatiranom i hromatno-fosfatiranom aluminijumu korišćene su metode spektroskopije elektrohemijske impedancije i termogravimetrijske analize. Zaštitne osobine epoksidnih prevlaka na anodiziranom i hromatno-fosfatiranom aluminijumu su značajno poboljšane u odnosu na iste epoksidne prevlake na aluminijumu i fosfatiranom aluminijumu: veće vrednosti otpornosti u porama prevlake i otpornosti prenosa naelektrisanja na graničnoj površini metal-elektrolit i manje vrednosti kapacitivnost prevlake, kapacitivnosti električnog dvojnog sloja i relativne permitivnosti prevlake (impedansna merenja) i manja količina absorbovane vode u prevlaci (termogravimetrijska analiza). S druge strane, manje vrednosti ipdt temperature ukazuju na manju termičku stabilnost epoksidnih prevlaka na anodiziranom i hromatno-fosfatiranom aluminijumu.

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties, as well as the thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on steel and steel modified by Zn-Ni alloys were investigated during exposure to 3 % NaCl. The Zn-Ni alloys were electrodeposited on steel using direct and pulse current. From the time dependence of the pore resistance of the epoxy coating (impedance measurements), the diffusion coefficient of water through the epoxy coating (gravimetric liquid sorption measurements) and the thermal stability of the epoxy coating (thermogravimetric analysis), it was shown that Zn-Ni sublayers significantly improve the corrosion stability of a protective system based on an epoxy coating. The values of the pore resistance were almost unchanged over a long period of immersion time for epoxy coatings on steel modified by Zn-Ni alloys, inidicating the great stability of these protective systems. .

AB - The electrochemical and transport properties and thermal stability of epoxy coatings electrodeposited on hot-dip galvanized steel and steel modified by Zn-Ni alloys were investigated during exposure to 3% NaCl solution. Zn-Ni alloys were electrodeposited on steel by direct and pulse current. From the time dependence of pore resistance, coating capacitance and relative permittivity of epoxy coating, diffusion coefficient of water through epoxy coating, D(H2O) and thermal stability, it was shown that Zn-Ni sublayers significantly improve the corrosion stability of the protective system based on epoxy coating. Almost unchanged values of pore resistance were obtained over the long period of investigated time for epoxy coatings on steel modified by Zn-Ni alloys, indicating the great stability of these protective systems, due to the existence of the inner oxide phase layer and the outer layer consisting of basic salts.
