AB - In this study, development of folic acid-loaded liposomes using a basic amino acid, histidine as a solubilizing agent for folic acid was presented, which tackled the poor solubility of this vitamin. The effect of the liposomal membrane modifiers, cholesterol and SPAN 20 on the characteristics of the final formulations was examined. Liposomes prepared from a commercially available purified soybean lecithin (Phospholipon 90G) by proliposome method were between 503 and 877 nm in average diameter, where cholesterol induced enlargement and SPAN.20 reduction of vesicles. High encapsulation efficiency of 84% and drug loading of 0.123 mg g(-1) were achieved, irrespective to the composition. According to AFM images, folic acid-loaded liposomes of a fraction with a nano size were flattened compared to globular empty liposomes. FTIR analysis revealed possible interactions between phospholipids and histidine, while DSC study suggested interactions between folic acid and lipids during heating. Release study done by a Franz diffusion cell showed prolonged release of folic acid from liposomes and the release rate was determined by folic acid solubility.

AB - Steel production in electric arc furnaces yielding formation of two waste materials, toxic electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) and non-hazardous electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). EAFD presents a potential hazard to the environment as it is characterized by the presence of heavy metals. This study dealt with the synthesis and characterization of alkali activated slag cement (AAS) based on EAFS with addition of 1-7% of Zn-rich EAFD dopant. Effects of slag replacement with dust on the compressive strength, physico-chemical, mineralogical and morphological properties of AAS cement were evaluated. This replacement lead to the development of porosity of AAS matrix, and retardation of slag alkali activation which resulted in the weakening of the AAS structure and hence in compressive strength decrease as pure AAS cement compressive strength was 21.04 MPa while AAS doped with 7% of EAFD reached only 8.4 MPa. On the other hand, AAS doped with 5% of EAFD exhibited compressive strength of 13.82 MPa, making it is still suitable for construction purposes... Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) in high angle annular dark field (HAADF) mode, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) investigations and standard EN 12457-2 leaching test provided information on the ability of AAS based on EAFS to fix Zn in AAS matrix.. The concentration of Zn in leachate of AAS cement doped with 5% of EAFD was 9.20 mg/kg which is below the limit prescribed for the granular waste acceptable at non-hazardous landfills according the European Directive 2003/33/CE.

AB - Eco-friendly and rapid microwave processing of a precipitate was used to produce Fe-doped zinc oxide (Zn1-xFexO,x= 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.20; ZnO:Fe) nanoparticles, which were tested as catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a moderately alkaline solution. The phase composition, crystal structure, morphology, textural properties, surface chemistry, optical properties and band structure were examined to comprehend the influence of Zn(2+)partial substitution with Fe(3+)on the catalytic activity of ZnO:Fe. Linear sweep voltammetry showed an improved catalytic activity of ZnO:5Fe toward the ORR, compared to pure ZnO, while with increased amounts of the Fe-dopant the activity decreased. The improvement was suggested by a more positive onset potential (0.394 Vvs.RHE), current density (0.231 mA cm(-2)at 0.150 Vvs.RHE), and faster kinetics (Tafel slope,b= 248 mV dec(-1)), and it may be due to the synergistic effect of (1) a sufficient amount of surface oxygen vacancies, and (2) a certain amount of plate-like particles composed of crystallites with well developed (0001) and (0001x304;) facets. Quite the contrary, the OER study showed that the introduction of Fe(3+)ions into the ZnO crystal structure resulted in enhanced catalytic activity of all ZnO:Fe samples, compared to pure ZnO, probably due to the modified binding energy and an optimized band structure. With the maximal current density of 1.066 mA cm(-2)at 2.216 Vvs.RHE, an onset potential of 1.856 Vvs.RHE, and the smallest potential difference between the OER and ORR (Delta E= 1.58 V), ZnO:10Fe may be considered a promising bifunctional catalyst toward the OER/ORR in moderately alkaline solution. This study demonstrates that the electrocatalytic activity of ZnO:Fe strongly depends on the defect chemistry and consequently the band structure. Along with providing fundamental insight into the electrocatalytic activity of ZnO:Fe, the study also indicates an optimal stoichiometry for enhanced bifunctional activity toward the OER/ORR, compared to pure ZnO.

AB - The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO center dot SiO2 and 3CaO center dot SiO2 calcined at 700 degrees C, and 3CaO center dot SiO2 calcined at 900 degrees C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2-2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO center dot SiO2 calcined at 700 degrees C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.

AB - Electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) are the waste materials generated during the iron and steel scrap remelting in electric arc furnace. EAFS is non-hazardous material which has found its application in different field of civil engineering. On the other hand, EAFD is classified as hazardous matreials due to the presence of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu Cr and Cd) and their potential leaching into environment. Stabilization/solidification (S/S) of toxic waste is a widely investigated as simply method for production of stable product. Cement binder was mainly used for this purpose but important shift in the use of different waste materials as a cement replacement was observed. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of S/S of heavy metals from EAFD using the alkali activated binders based on EAFS. The alkali activated slag with a different content of EAFS was synthesised and characterized using the SEM/EDS, XRDP, FTIR. The binding of Zn into the reaction product of slag alkali activation was founded. The immobilization efficacy was evaluated using TCLP Method No. 1311 (USEPA) and EN 12457-2 (EULFD) leaching tests.

AB - Pristine electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as well as EAFS modified by alkali activation i.e. alkali activated slag (AAS) have found a novel application as adsorbents used in Cu2+ removal from sulfate solutions. The adsorption tests were carried in batch conditions and results have shown that alkali activation of EAFS enhances the Cu2+ adsorption. The adsorption process was found to follow a pseudo second-order kinetic model and occurs via formation of posnjakite (Cu-4(SO4)(OH)(6)center dot H2O) on the surface of both, EAFS and AAS. Enhanced adsorption properties of AAS, compared to EAFS, are attributed to a more porous structure, larger specific surface area and an increased number of surface groups involved in the binding of Cu2+.

AB - Owing to a wide band gap energy (3.37 eV at RT) and a large exciton binding energy (60 meV), ZnO nanoparticles (ZnONP) have a diverse application, e.g. in electronics, optoelectronics, photocatalysis. Besides, ZnONP have a great potential in medicine for bioimaging, drug/gene delivery or as antimicrobial and anticancer agents. One of suggested governing mechanisms of the mentioned biological activities of ZnONP is based on formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). When ZnONP absorb photon with energy equal or greater than its band gap, electrons are excited from the valence band (VB) to the conduction band (CB) leaving the holes in VB. Furthermore, the photogenerated holes (h+) and electrons (e-) migrate from bulk to surface. The photogenerated holes at the VB react with water molecules adsorbed at the particle surface to produce hydroxyl radical, while electrons in CB react with oxygen molecules generating anionic superoxide radical O2 -•. Superoxide radicals can be transformed in highly reactive OH• and so on [1]. Derivatives of this active oxygen can damage the bacterial/tumor cells [2]. However, in sufficiency ROS can damage normal cells as well. Thus, an understanding of ZnONP crystal structure-activity relationship and mechanism of ZnONP-related products formation and their consequent activity is crucial for the design of safe ZnONP based biomaterial for application in treating diseases like cancer. A series of ZnONP samples were synthesized by microwave processing of precipitate in the presence of a small amount (5 wt.%) of surfactants CTAB and citric acid. The particles crystallinity and purity were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The particles morphology and texture properties were observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE–SEM) and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm, respectively. The optical properties were studied using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. ZnONP samples with different surface-to-bulk defect ratio were examined on ROS formation and antimicrobial activity. Future studies will be conducted with an aim to correlate surface-to-bulk defect ratio in ZnONP with mechanism of ROS formation and their cytotoxicity to normal and cancerous cells.

AB - ZnO nanopowders were produced using microwave processing of a precipitate and applied as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Two different surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the cationic and Pluronic F127 as the non-ionic one, were employed to in situ adjust the surface-to-bulk defect ratio in the ZnO crystal structure and further to modify the photo(electro)catalytic activity of the ZnO photoanode. The crystal structure, morphological, textural, optical and photo(electro)catalytic properties of ZnO particles were studied in detail to explain the profound effects of the surfactants on the photoanode activity. The ZnO/CTAB photoanode displayed the highest photocurrent density of 27 mA g(-1), compared to ZnO (10.4 mA g(-1)) and ZnO/F127 photoanodes (20 mA g(-1)) at 1.5 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M Na2SO4 under visible illumination of 90 mW cm(-2). A significant shift of the overpotential toward lower values was also observed when photoanodes were illuminated. The highest shift of the overpotential, from 1.296 to 0.248 V vs. SCE, was recorded when the ZnO/CTAB photanode was illuminated. The ZnO/CTAB photoanode provides efficient charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface, with a longer lifetime of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and reduced possibility of charge recombination. The photoconversion efficiency was improved from 1.4% for ZnO and 0.9% for ZnO/F127 to 4.2% for ZnO/CTAB at 0.510 mV. A simple procedure for the synthesis of ZnO particles with improved photo(electro)catalytic properties was established and it was found that even a small amount of CTAB used during processing of ZnO increases the surface-to-bulk defect ratio. Optimization of the surface-to-bulk defect ratio in ZnO materials enables increase of the absorption capacity for visible light, rendering of the recombination rate of the photogenerated pair, as well as increase of both the photocurrent density and photoconversion efficiency.

AB - Slaughterhouse blood represents a valuable source of hemoglobin, which can be used in the production of heme-iron based supplements for the prevention/treatment of iron-deficiency anemia. In order to obtain a stable solid-state formulation, the effect of maltose addition (30 %) on the stability and storage of bovine and porcine hemoglobin in powders obtained by spray-and freeze-drying (without maltose: Hb; with maltose: HbM) were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry of spray- and freeze-dried powders indicated satisfying quality of the formulation prepared with maltose on dissolving back into solution. After two-year storage at room temperature (20 +/- 5 degrees C) in solid forms, protected from moisture and light, rehydrated spray- and freeze- dried HbM were red, while Hb were brown. Dynamic light scattering showed the presence of native hemoglobin monomers in rehydrated spray- and freeze- dried HbM, but their agglomerates in Hb samples. UV-Vis spectrophotometry confirmed an absence of significant hemoglobin denaturation and methemoglobin formation in HbM freeze-dried powders. In spray-dried HbM, an increased level of methemoglobin was detected. The results confirmed the stabilizing effect of maltose, and suggested its use in the production of long-term stable solid-state formulations of hemoglobin, along with drying processes optimization.

AB - In this paper, the character of structural changes induced by different mechanical treatments to Prunus persica stones (PSs), and its subsequent effect on biosorption kinetics of Cu(II) were investigated. PSs were processed in vibratory disk mill (PS-V) and ultra-centrifugal mill (PS-C) and characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and FTIR spectroscopy. It was shown that PS-V was smaller and more reactive with less crystallinity index and hydrogen bond intensity compared to PS-C. In opposite, surface area of the PS-C was bigger than that of the PS-V. The total pore volume was about threefold, while the volume of micro pores was 9.29 times higher in PS-Cs than in PS-Vs. The kinetics of Cu(II) biosorption by both PSs was tested through various kinetic models: pseudo-first and pseudo-second order rate equations, Elovich equation, Boyd model, Weber-Morris and Urano-Tachikawa intraparticle diffusion model. For both sample types, Cu(II) biosorption occurred through combination of intraparticle and film diffusion mechanism, while kinetic results were best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. At the same time, the results indicated that together with kinetic rate the biosorption capacity of PS-C (21.20 mg g(-1)) was higher than that of PS-V (16.30 mg g(-1)). Mechanical activation like crushing and grinding will change material particle size, specific surface area and porosity, as well as its crystallinity. However, this paper elucidates that such physical structural changes will impact on heavy metal ions removal efficiency. This investigation suggests that the type of size reduction in lignocellulosic biosorbent preparation plays a very important role in overall biosorption performance, so it should be carefully considered every time when the mechanical treatment of material is necessary to be applied.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is a suiTab. material for usage in various industry fields owing to its chemical stability, electrical and mechanical features. It is known that properties of ceramics could be modified by addition of different oxides, as well as by changing the consolidation parameters. In this respect, alumina was doped with 1 wt.% of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation in a high-energy planetary ball mill. A sensitive dilatometer was used for sintering of powder mixtures up to 1400 degrees C and recording the obtained dilatation. The final density varied between cca. 1.9 and 3.3 g/cm(3). Microstructural changes were detected by SEM measurements. Changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent were associated with the preparation conditions (types of additives, duration of mechanical activation). For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses, exhibiting the optimal values of 8.32 and 0.027, respectively, for the sample activated 60 minutes and sintered, with the addition of MnO2. Mechanical measurements indicate significant differences in strength with the addition of different transition metal oxides. Samples with Mn and Ni, activated and sintered, with strength of 121 and 86 MPa, respectively, have a significantly higher tensile strength than the other tested samples, due to their more compact microstructures.

AB - The removal of heavy metals from wastewaters is presently a global imperative primarily due to their well-known toxic nature and detrimental effects on the environment, and more importantly, on human health. Currently, special attention is paid to the use of novel slag based materials – alkali activated slag (AAS) as potential novel adsorbents. Our previous studies have shown that electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) can be successfully used as a precursor for the production of AAS. Generally, alkaline activation involves a chemical reaction between solid aluminosilicate materials and a highly alkaline activator. The alkali activation mechanism of slag involves the dissolution of slag in a highly alkaline, which is followed by the condensation and hardening processes. Dependent on the pH and type of alkaline activator, calcium (alumina) silicate hydrate or C–(A)–S–H gel has been identified as a reaction product of slag alkali activation. The objective of this research was to investigate the removal of Cu2+ from aquatic solution using alkali activated slag (AAS) obtained by alkaline activation of EAFS.

AB - Electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) is the by-product of steel production in an electric arc furnace. In a pass two decade a special attention is paid to the valorization of metallurgical slags by alkali activation. The process involves a chemical reaction of slag with the alkaline activator followed by the condensation and hardening processes. Aluminium-containing calcium silicate hydrate gel i.e. C–(A)–S–H gel with a low C/S ratio has been identified as a reaction product of slag alkali activation. We have synthesized the AAS using the EAFS as the precursor and Na2SiO3 solution as an activator. The AAS samples are characterized by XRD, SEM/EDS and FTIR analysis. Moreover, investigation of mechanical properties dilatometric and porosity analysis were performed as well so as to build up a detailed illustration of AAS properties and possible application of these materials. The results have shown that AAS may reach the compressive strength (~ 40 MPa) which enables its application in a civil engineering. Moreover, the AAS sample exhibits improved strength (~ 50 MPa) at elevated temperatures thus potential application of these materials in a high temperature conditions should be considered. On the other hand, these materials may be used as an effective adsorbent for the Cu2+ removal from sulfate bearing wastewater. The Cu2 + ions have been found to be attached on the surface of AAS by formation of stable hydrooxocomplexes that are sorbed on the adsorbent surface via hydroxyl groups in the form of posnjakite crystal phase.

AB - Processing of hybrid composites represents a challenge for engineers where the aim is to establish compatibility among several materials. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of different sizes and morphologies of alumina fillers on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite fibres based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibres (UHMWPE). These fibres have an outstanding elastic modulus and they are compatible with nonpolar sequences of the poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) matrix. Compared to the fibres, inferior mechanical properties of the matrix can be improved using alumina particles. Commercial aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles, commercial whiskers and synthesized particles of Al2O3 doped with iron oxide, incorporated in different weight percentages, were used as fillers. The UHMWPE fibres were impregnated using the solution of EVA in toluene with dispersed particles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscope were used for structural examination. Tensile testing revealed increasing of modulus of elasticity and strengths of obtained hybrid composite fibres. Thermal gravimetry showed improved thermal stability up to 350 degrees C of the hybrid composite fibres with alumina particles doped with iron oxide. Results of tested samples showed that the best mechanical properties were for hybrid composite fibres with 1 wt% of iron doped alumina filler.

AB - This study aims to understand the kinetic, thermodynamic and mechanism of Cu2+ adsorption onto unmodified electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and alkali modified EAFS. The adsorption process was investigated via a batch reactor system. The modified EAFS sample has been prepared by reacting an EAFS powder with an aqueous alkali silicate solution. The both samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR and porosimetric measurements. The results have shown that alkali activation of EAFS favour adsorption process. The adsorption reaction on both adsorbents was found to be pseudo second order. Thermodynamic investigations have shown that adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Mechanism of adsorption was investigated using the intraparticle diffusion and Boyd model which suggested that the both, film diffusion and diffusion within the pores of adsorbent controls the intraparticle diffusion of Cu2+ onto and EAFS and modified EAFS and was mainly due to external mass transport. Besides, FTIR spectroscopy determined the surface functional groups of the EAFS and modified EAFS which participate in Cu2+ bonding.

AB - In the present study, the influence of different encapsulation techniques (lyophilization and spray drying) on gelatin, as a carrier system for delivery of polyphenols compounds, on wild thyme extracts and on encapsulated extracts was investigated. FTIR analyses has shown the presence of carbohydrates, polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, monoterpenes and carboxylates in the dried extracts, while FTIR spectrum of the encapsulated extracts has shown almost exclusively gelatin-based stripes, indicating the efficient encapsulation of the active ingredients of the extracts and therefore their protection. Scanning electron microscopy has shown that the lyophilization process produced irregularly shaped particles, while spray drying formed spherical and pseudo-spherical particles with rough surface. Using the method of diffraction of laser light, it has been found that spray dried encapsulate possessed significantly lower particle size and significantly better uniformity in comparison to the lyophilized sample. According to the results obtained in differential scanning calorimetry, endothermic peak of lyophilized gelatin encapsulate appeared at higher temperature, thus it can be concluded that lyophilized sample was more thermostable than spray dried parallel. Additionally, the values of enthalpy of gelatin encapsulates were significantly higher compared to pure extracts, which confirmed the presence of stabilizing interactions between the encapsulated components and a carrier.

AB - The paper reports about the preparation and characterization of hydrogel particles containing liposomes loaded with resveratrol as an active compound. The materials used for preparation of the particles were chosen to be suitable for food industry. Different polymer concentrations affect particles shape, size, size distribution, as well as the release kinetics of resveratrol. The diameter of particles varied from 360 to 754 μm, while the narrow size distribution was observed for all types of particles. Release studies were performed in Franz diffusion cell and the results showed the prolonged release of resveratrol from all samples, but the sample with the highest content of polymer (2.5% w/w) in particular stood out. The research provides useful information about liposomes containing active compound encapsulated in hydrogel matrices and offers the basis for its application in the food industry.
Ovi rezultati daju korisne podatke o kompleksnim sistemima gde je aktivna komponenta inkapsulirana u lipozome dalje obložena polimerom čime doprinose potencijalnoj aplikaciji ovih i sličnih sistema u prehrambene proizvode.

AB - Mechanical milling of commercial ZnO and SnO2 was used to produce a ZnO/SnO2 composite with a high density of surface defects; in particular, zinc interstitials (Zni) and oxygen vacancies (VO). To determine the impact of surface defects on photocatalytic activity, the relative concentration ratio of bulk defects to surface defects was modified by annealing at 400 and 700 degrees C. The possible application of the ZnO/SnO2 composite as a natural sunlight and UV- light driven photocatalyst was revealed via de-colorization of methylene blue. In both cases the ZnO/SnO2 composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to the pristine ZnO. In order to investigate the origin of the enhancement, the pristine metal oxides and composites were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), laser diffraction particle size analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and elemental mapping analyses were used to reveal the presence of SnO2 nanocrystallites on the surface of larger ZnO particles. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the surface defects and the ZnO/SnO2 heterojunction particles, which facilitated charge separation, thereby hindering the recombination of photogenerated carriers. This study draws attention to mechanical activation as an inexpensive and environmentally friendly technique for the large-scale production of the composite with an enhanced photocatalytic activity under illumination of either UV or sunlight.

This study draws attention to mechanical activation as an inexpensive and environmentally friendly technique for the large-scale production of the composite with an enhanced photocatalytic activity under illumination of either UV or sunlight.",

AB - Bismuth germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 (BGO) has very interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to make devices based on this material more flexible, its powder was used for preparing polymer composites. This study reports investigation of the effects of using different solvents and polymers in preparation of BGO composite on the microstructural and optical behaviour of the resulting material. Preparation of such composites by a solution casting method is described. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) were used as matrix materials and acetone and chloroform as solvents. Their microstructure and the quality of BGO dispersion and deaggregation in polymer matrix were analyzed by SEM, Raman, XRD and optical spectroscopy. The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too.

AB - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr(+6)and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g(-1), were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 degrees C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm(2) provided ceramics samples with"the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)-O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger Fe-O-Fe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - We reported the design of liposome-loaded Ca-alginate microspheres as a drug delivery system for controlled release of resveratrol. The effect of admixed sucrose and chitosan coating was assessed in terms of physicochemical, thermal and release properties of liposome-in alginate systems with encapsulated resveratrol. The diameter of liposomes produced by proliposome method increased from 412 to 471 nm with addition of sucrose as a cryoprotectant. DSC analysis revealed that phospolipids interact with each other while forming the lipid bilayer and that resveratrol was incorporated within the lipid bilayer, causing destabilizing effect in the two temperature regions (137-202 degrees C and 240-270 degrees C). Liposomes were entrapped within polymer network and remained intact as determined by SEM cross-sectional observation of the microbeads. Liposomes interfered with the thermal behavior of alginate in the temperature region above 220 degrees C. The presence of liposomes decreased the strength of the beads in comparison to placebo beads, according to mechanical tests on compression. Release studies performed in Franz diffusion cell showed the overall resistance to mass transfer one order of magnitude higher (10(6) s/m) than the resistance ascribed solely to the liposomal membrane. The chitosan coating, visible as a dense surface layer (similar to 7 mu m thick) in dry state, caused decrease in encapsulation efficiency of resveratrol (85% vs. 91%) and in size of the particles (d(50) of 387 vs. 440 mu m); the chitosan also caused weakening of the polymer matrix, but increased resistance to drug diffusion (11.4 x 10(5) s/m) in comparison to the uncoated alginate-liposome formulation (9.1 x 10(5) s/m).

AB - A possibility to apply raw, powdered peach shells ( PS) as a biosorbent for water purification was studied. The PSs are locally available as a solid waste in a fruit juice factory; methylene blue (MB) was chosen as representative of common pollutants in textile industry wastewater. The phase composition of prepared particles was identified by XRD. The particle morphology was characterized by FE-SEM, while the size distribution was measured by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer. The BET specific surface area was determined from N-2 adsorption/desorption experiments. The effect of operating parameters: the biosorbent amount (50-1000 mg/100 mL), contact time (10-180 min), solution pH (2-12) and initial concentration (10-100 ppm) on biosorption efficiency was examined. Optimal conditions for MB removal were found to be: the biosorbent amount of 400 mg/100 mL and pH 5.5. A high efficiency of MB removal was established after 180 min: 99% for [MB](i) = 10 ppm and 76% for [MB](i) = 100 ppm. Biosorption is well described by the Freundlich- and BET-type isotherms, implicating heterogeneous adsorption sites and interconnections between adsorbed molecules. The FTIR spectroscopy results indicate hydrogen bonding between the dye and the biomass. The obtained results shown that raw peach shell particles could be used as an efficient low-cost biosorbent for dye removal from water.
