AB - Petrochemical plastics are generally recalcitrant to microbial degradation and accumulate in the environment. Biodegradable polymers obtained synthetically like poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), obtained biotechnologically, have shown great potential as a replacement for petroleum-based plastics. Nevertheless, their biodegradation and environmental faith have been less examined. In this study, thin films of PCL (200 μm) and medium chain length PHA (mcl-PHA, 70 M fraction of 3-hydroxyoctanoate and 30 M fraction of 3-hydroxydecanoate, 600 μm) were exposed to total protein preparations (extracellular proteins combined with a crude cell extract) of soil isolates Pseudomonas chlororaphis B-561 and Streptomyces sp. BV315 that had been grown on waste cooking oil as a sole carbon source. Biodegradation potential of two polyesters was evaluated in buffer with total protein preparations and in a laboratory compost model system augmented with selected bacteria. Overall, PCL showed better biodegradation properties in comparison to mcl-PHA. Both materials showed surface erosion after 4-weeks of exposure to total protein preparations of both strains, with a moderate weight loss of 1.3% when P. chlororaphis B-561 was utilized. In laboratory compost model system PCL and mcl-PHA showed significant weight loss ranging from 13 to 17% when Streptomyces sp. BV315 culture was used. Similar weight loss of PCL and mcl-PHA was achieved for 4 and 8 weeks, respectively indicating slower degradation of mcl-PHA. Growth on waste cooking oil as a sole carbon source increased the potential of both tested strains to degrade PCL and mcl-PHA, making them good candidates for augmentation of compost cultures in waste management of both waste cooking oils and biodegradable polymers.

AB - This study presents preparation and characterization of ethyl cellulose based nanocomposites. Successful use of simple solvent casting technique provided nanocomposites with high loads of barium ferrite magnetic nanopowder in the polymer matrix, promising significant improvement of mechanical properties. Investigation of morphology revealed formation of agglomerates that are still on nanoscopic level. Nanocomposite thin films with a higher content of the magnetic powder showed substantial enhancement of break strength, elongation and microhardness compared to the pure ethyl cellulose, which was the primary aim of this research.

AB - Hydrolytic, enzymatic degradation and composting under controlled conditions of series of triblock PCL/PEO copolymers, PCEC, with central short PEO block (M (n) 400 g/mol) are presented and compared with homopolymer (PCL). The PCEC copolymers, synthesized via ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone, were characterized by H-1 NMR, quantitative C-13 NMR, GPC, DSC and WAXS. The introduction of the PEO central segment ( lt 2 wt%) in PCL chains significantly affected thermal degradation and crystallization behavior, while the hydrophobicity was slightly reduced as confirmed by water absorption and moisture uptake experiments. Hydrolytic degradation studies in phosphate buffer after 8 weeks indicated a small weight loss, while FTIR analysis detected changes in crystallinity indexes and GPC measurements revealed bulk degradation. Enzymatic degradation tested by cell-free extracts containing Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 confirmed high enzyme activity throughout the surface causing morphological changes detected by optical microscopy and AFM analysis. The changes in roughness of polymer films revealed surface erosion mechanism of enzymatic degradation. Copolymer with the highest content of PEO segment and the lowest molecular weight showed better degradation ability compared to PCL and other copolymers. Furthermore, composting of polymer films in a model compost system at 37 A degrees C resulted in significant degradation of the all synthesized block copolymers.

AB - In this study, electrospinning combined with sol-gel technique is applied in order to produce magnetic nickel ferrite (Ni-ferrite) nanofibers. The prepared Ni-ferrite gel was mixed with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) solution which was used as a spinning aid to enable spinnability of the mixture. Structural and morphological characteristics of the asspun ferrite gel/PVP composite web structure and calcinated Ni-ferrite nanofibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Phase composition analysis was carried out by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS). The obtained results suggest that the pure nanocrystalline NiFe2O4 dense mat to the almost coral-like structure of fibers with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometers to few micrometers was obtained. The results of MS analysis revealed the existence of a crystallite size distribution within the material as well as the existence of a superparamagnetic fraction with very small crystallite sizes ( lt 13nm). Magnetic behavior of the obtained material at elevated temperatures was also scrutinized using thermomagnetic measurements (TM) up to 800 degrees C.

AB - Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) based nanocomposites with unmodified and organomodified sepiolites were prepared by solution casting method. The sepiolites were modified with short (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (SEP-SI) by using covalent grafting or with long hexadecylamine (SEP-HDA) by using ionic exchange. In order to reveal the influence of the organomodification on the nanoclay dispersion and the properties of the nano composites XRD, DSC, TG, SEM, TEM, optical microscopy, melt rheology and dynamic-mechanical analyses were performed. A better dispersion was achieved when organomodified sepiolites instead of native ones were used as fillers. As deduced from the melt rheology data, by analysis of the Cole-Cole plots, the best dispersion was obtained for SEP-SI nanoclay. The thermal stability was not improved, however in the initial stages of the thereto-oxidative degradation a delay in the weight loss was observed for nanocomposites with organomodified sepiolites. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were improved in comparison to PCL, particularly for those with modified sepiolites. In terms of mechanical properties the use of sepiolite modified with HDA gave the best results, as a consequence of better interaction between longer alkyl hydrophobic part of the organic modificator and the hydrophobic PCL matrix.

AB - Nano-crystalline nickel ferrite has a broad range of applications due to its favourable magnetic properties. Those characteristics can be significantly influenced by the synthesis pathway including methods conducted in the presence of supercritical alcohols. Nano-crystalline NiFe2O4 powders were obtained in the reaction under subcritical and supercritical conditions of ethanol. Both high pressure synthesis routes resulted in powders with smaller primary particles and higher mesoporosity than co-precipitation method. Upon the annealing treatment the average crystallite size increased while material structure remained uniform, resulting in significantly enhanced magnetic properties, such as coercivity and remanence. It was found that synthesis under supercritical conditions provides higher conversion but also material with larger average crystallite size upon annealing. The time and temperature of annealing stage significantly influenced the morphology and magnetic properties of the obtained powders.

AB - The commercial multi-mode optical fiber was coated with magnetic composite material prepared using Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet powder dispersed in poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)-EVA. Characterization of microstructure, thermal stability and mechanical properties of the composite coatings with different Nd-Fe-B powder content were performed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and standard tensile tester, respectively. Experimental results show that composites with higher content of Nd-Fe-B powder have improved thermal and mechanical properties. Propagation characteristics of the constructed optical fiber magnetic sensing element (OFMSE) in the external magnetic field were investigated in relation to quality and composition of the applied composite coatings. The attenuation of optical signal with applied external magnetic field intensity was monitored and the results suggest that the sample with 50 wt-% of Nd-Fe-B provides the greatest sensitivity of the sensor element.

AB - In this paper, we have analyzed parts of printed circuit board (PCB) and liquid crystal display (LCD) screens of mobile phones and computers, quantitative and qualitative chemical compositions of individual components, and complete PCBs were determined. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods were used to determine the temperatures of phase transformations, whereas qualitative and quantitative compositions of the samples were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analyses. The microstructure of samples was studied by optical microscopy. Based on results of the analysis, a procedure for recycling PCBs is proposed. The emphasis was on the effects that can be achieved in the recycling process by extraction of some parts before the melting process. In addition, newly developed materials can be an adequate substitute for some of the dangerous and harmful materials, such as lead and arsenic are proposed, which is in accordance with the European Union (EU) Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS) directive as well as some alternative materials for use in the electronics industry instead of gold and gold alloys.

AB - Magnetic thin films based on iron group elements (Fe, Co, Ni) are currently used in computer's hard disk drives and in MEMS, whereas electrodeposition is a suitable method to obtain these materials. The powders of metals and alloys were obtained by electrochemical deposition at constant current density using alkaline ammonium electrolyte which consist one, two or three different elements Co, Ni and Mo. Ni and Co are deposited anomalously. The Mo element cannot be obtained electrochemically from the aqueous solutions. Electrochemical deposition of this metal is induced by codeposited iron-group metals, Ni and Co, for instance. This study investigates the influence of electrochemical parameters on composition and properties of obtained powders. Based on the obtained experimental results, it could be concluded that the particle size of deposited powders and chemical composition are influenced by the chemical composition of the electrolyte, with changing the concentration ratio of ions of metallic salts as well as current density imposed. As a consequence, the changes in magnetic properties are obvious. The structure and morphology of powders were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). For demonstration of mechanism of powder deposition Image ProPlus software for SEM microphotograph analysis was used. The values of individual objects as well as formed clusters of powders were measured by this technique. The chemical composition of the powders was determinate using Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. XRD results suggested that obtained powders were of amorphous structure.

AB - The optical fiber magnetic sensing element (OFMSE) based on the optical fiber coated with composite coating polymer-magnetic powder has been already introduced in magnetic field sensing. In this research, the rapid quenched Nd-Fe-B powder with Nd rich content was used as magneto-active component in composite coating. Magnetic powder was dispersed in poly-(ethylene-co-vinyl-acetate) - EVA solution in toluene. The influence of magnetic powder content (20, 30, 40 and 50 mass %) in composite coating of multimode optical fiber on the thickness, hardness and uniformity was observed and discussed. Sensitivity and reversibility of the constructed OFMSE in the external magnetic field are illustrated.

AB - A multimode optical fiber with a composite polymer-magnetic coating was investigated as an optical fiber magnetic sensing element (OFMSE) for detecting external magnetic fields. The coating was formed by dispersing the magnetic powder Nd-Fe-B in poly-(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)-EVA solution in toluene. The influence of an applied magnetic field on the change in intensity of a light signal propagated through the OFMSE constructed was investigated. In this study, the influence of the magnetic powder concentration in the composite coating on optical propagation characteristics of the modified optical fiber with the composite polymer-magnetic coating was investigated.

AB - As a part of these experimental investigations of melt-spun Nd-Fe-B alloy with Nd rich content in relation to Nd2Fe14B prepared by rapid quenching process for optimally selected cooling rate and heat treatment, the influence of the chosen chemical composition on magnetic properties was observed. The results of X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy phase analysis and magnetic measurement of investigated melt-spun Nd14.5Fe78.5B7 alloy are presented to bring some new information concerning the relation between their structure and magnetic properties.
