AB - In this study, an environmentally sustainable process of crystal violet, congo red, methylene
blue, brilliant green, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ ions adsorption from aqueous solutions onto aminomodified starch derivatives was investigated. The degree of substitution, elemental analysis,
swelling capacity, solubility, and FTIR, XRD, and SEM techniques were used to characterize
the adsorbents. The influence of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration has
been studied to optimize the adsorption conditions. The amino-modified starch was the most
effective in removing crystal violet (CV) (65.31-80.46%) and Pb2+ (67.44-80.33%) within the
optimal adsorption conditions (pH 5, 10 mg dm-3, 25 oC, 180 min). The adsorption of CV could be described by both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, while the
adsorption of Pb2+ ions was better described by the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second
order model can be used to describe the adsorption kinetics of CV and Pb2+ on all tested
samples. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption of CV was exothermic,
while the Pb2+ adsorption was endothermic. The simultaneous removal of CV and Pb2+ from
the binary mixture has shown their competitive behavior. Thus, the amino-modified starch is
a promising eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of dyes and heavy metals from polluted
water.

AB - Elemental sulfur (S8) is a corrosive sulfur compound which was found to be extremely reactive to silver, causing intensive silver sulfide (Ag2S) deposition on on-load tap changer (OLTC) contacts in power transformers. A highly selective adsorbent (HSA), called Tesla’Ssorb, for the removal of S8 from mineral insulating oils was prepared from raw material (RM) using the novel procedure. In this study, the adsorption properties of HSA for the removal of S8 from the oil were determined. RM and HSA were characterized using various techniques, such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The performance of HSA was determined by adsorption equilibrium, thermodynamic, and kinetic study through batch experiments, at various temperatures and initial concentrations of S8. The obtained results were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and it was found that equilibrium data were fitted better with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 4.84 mg of S8/g of HSA at 353 K. Thermodynamic parameters, such as enthalpy (ΔH°), Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), and entropy (ΔS°), were calculated and it was found that the sorption process was spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and endothermic in nature (ΔH° > 0). It was found that the adsorption of S8 follows pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the activation energy indicated the activated chemisorption process.

AB - Although the same quality of various metals from the recycling process is considered for granted, obtaining aluminum of high purity and aluminum alloys with identical properties as from production from pure raw materials is a very challenging process, especially if the sources for recycling are numerous materials that contain different impurities. In this study, recycled alloys were produced by melting of aluminum scrap with the addition of the required components. This paper aims to compare two commercial Al alloys with their analogs from the recycling process. Both of the alloys belong to the aluminum series 6000, with designations 6060 and 6082. The results of comparing corrosion and physical characteristics are presented in this study. Physical characterization was performed by measuring the alloys' hardness and electrical conductivity. The electrochemical investigation used several corrosion methods, OCP (open circuit potential), measuring polarization curves in apparent Tafel region with extrapolation of results, and LRP (linear polarization resistance). The corrosion environment was acidulated 0.5M Na2SO4 with pH=2.5. The received results have confirmed insignificant differences between the properties of the commercial and alloys produced by the recycling. Recycled alloys have achieved almost identical mechanical properties and even slightly better corrosion characteristics, which was the consequence of the lower concentration of impurities in recycled alloys or higher concentration of microalloying components.

AB - Binary palladium alloys with nickel are known to have catalytic activity and are also used as catalyst-trap in the synthesis of nitric acid. High Pd alloys are corrosive resistant in many solutions, including highly alkaline and highly acidic. Although generally not prone to corrosion in low concentrations of mineral acids due to the high content of palladium in it, this alloy is still prone to the dealloying effect under specific conditions. The dealloying process was researched under anodic polarization in 1.0M nitric acid solution. Scanning electronic microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and electrochemical methods were used to study the susceptibility of PdNi5 alloy to dealloying.

AB - Highly porous lignin-based microspheres, modified by magnetite nanoparticles, were used for the first time for the removal of selenate anions, Se(VI), from spiked and real water samples. The influence of experimental conditions: selenate concentration, adsorbent dosage and contact time on the adsorption capacity was investigated in a batch experimental mode. The FTIR, XRD, SEM techniques were used to analyze the structural and morphological properties of the native and exhausted adsorbent. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 69.9 mg/g for Se(VI) anions at pH 6.46 from the simulated water samples. The modified natural polymer was efficient in Se(VI) removal from the real (potable) water samples, originated from six cities in the Republic of Serbia, with an overage efficacy of 20%. The regeneration capacity of 61% in one cycle of desorption (0.5 M NaOH as desorption solution) of bio-based adsorbent was gained in this investigation. The examined material demonstrated a significant affinity for Se(VI) oxyanion, but a low potential for multi-cycle material application; consequently, the loaded sorbent could be proposed to be used as a Se fertilizer.

environmental point of view. Large amounts of waste contain significant amounts of valuable metals
used as the secondary source. The PCBs can be viewed as a complicated mineral raw material on which
mineral processing procedures can be applied. This work presents the mineral processing procedures
used in the certain stages of recycling waste printed circuit boards.

AB - This work is aimed to characterize the gold complexes using the electron spray ionization (ESI), and atmospheric solids analysis probe (ASAP), tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer (TQD). It is demonstrated here that the use of the ASAP is more suitable than the ESI for a rapid analysis of the gold coatings in the solid and liquid state. The mass spectra indicate that mercaptotriazole and glycine can coordinate with the gold ion and to build complexes such as [Au-2MT-Gly] and [Au-2MT-2Gly].

AB - This study addresses the influence of heat treatment and alumina coating on the corrosion of EN 1.4713 steel in 0.1 mol dm(-3) sulfuric acid. The corrosion characteristics of three different samples are examined using the open circuit potential measurements, Tafel extrapolation, linear polarization resistance, weight-loss method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the application of the weight-loss method yielded similar values to the electrochemical method in the first 24 h. A decrease in corrosion rate, in a similar manner, was observed for all three samples. The largest deacceleration was obtained for the alumina/titania-coated sample. It was obtained that the heat treatment significantly increased the corrosion resistance, but only in the first 24 h. The alumina/titania coating decreases the corrosion rate by approximately 30 times at the beginning of the corrosion exposure and by nearly 300 times after 240 h. This coating could have a significant influence on construction design, which uses ferritic stainless steel as the material.

AB - Silver nitrate in the solution was reduced in the presence of the dispersants by ascorbic acid, and silver particles were generated. The main goal was to examine the influence of different dispersants. The purpose was to improve the production process of the micro-sized silver powder for thick film silver pastes for applications in the photovoltaic sector and the printed electronics. Relatively high concentrations of the reagents were used to achieve a high yield of silver particles. It was a strict request for highly economic production. This paper shows the possibilities for future large-scale synthesis and potential industrial production. The particles were analyzed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and laser diffraction particle size analyzer.

AB - Corrosion products formed on the surface of two silver brazing alloys after the potentiostatic polarization in 3.5% sodium chloride solution were characterized by the standard methods such as, the X-ray diffraction, microRaman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. This paper presents the results of a laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) analysis as a new approach to the characterization of corrosion products. The potential of the anodic polarization was 0.5 V versus saturated calomel electrode, and the process duration was 300 s. The corrosion layers on both investigated alloys were similar in composition with cuprous chloride and silver chloride as the main components and had strong indications of cuprous oxide formation. The major difference between these two layers was the existence of zinc hydroxychioride as the corrosion product of Ag-Cu-Zn alloy. Palladium compounds were not found in the case of Ag-Cu-Pd alloy. The results of different methods have shown a good consistency. Complementarity between the used methods was useful in the interpretation of the results for each used method. This study has demonstrated that LDI MS can be used as an efficient additional method together with the traditional ones.

AB - This paper presents the method for preparation the fine Ag powder with a particles size smaller than 2 μm. Reduction was performed from the nitrate solution directly by the vigorous stirring at the room temperature by the use of ascorbic acid as the reducing agent and polyvinylpyridine as the protecting agent. Silver powder with nearly spherical particles and size of micrometers were prepared by the chemical reduction and characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM analysis has shown that preferred size, less than 2 μm was obtained. Silver with purity of 99.9% or more was obtained.

AB - Microstructure and phase transitions of selected brazing alloys from the Ag-Cu-Zn ternary system were investigated. Four ternary alloys with silver content in the compositional range from 25 to 60 wt.% were studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with the energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Phase transitions of the investigated alloys were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Experimentally obtained results were compared with the results of a thermodynamic calculation of the phase equilibria according to the CALPHAD method. The experiments confirmed the optimized thermodynamic parameters for the calculations from the thermodynamic assessment in literature. Phase compositions, liquidus and solidus temperatures were confirmed by the EDS and DTA methods. Additionally, the calculated solidification paths and predicted phase transformations were in agreement with the SEM images.

AB - This paper presents investigations of the influence of silicon addition on the mechanical and corrosion characteristics of the sterling silver Ag-Cu-Zn alloys. The procedure for obtaining Ag-Cu-Zn-Si alloys in small ranges of composition was also presented Vickers hardness tests and three electrochemical tests were performed on the samples in this study. Open circuit potential measurements, linear polarization resistance method, and potentiodynamic polarization tests were employed to determine corrosion characteristics of the alloys. The materials were tested in 0.9% Nacl solution, artificial sweat, 0.1 and 0.01 M sodium sulfide solutions. It was shown that addition of silicone increases hardness and generally improves sulfidation resistance and corrosion characteristics in near-neutral chloride solutions of the Ag-Cu-Zn alloys.

AB - Stability of the gold complex based on mercaptotriazole in two acid electrolytes with different pH values and in a neutral medium was investigated in this work. Investigation was performed by visual monitoring and electrochemical characterization of the electrolytes in a period of one year or until first visible signs of complex decomposition. Electrochemical characterization of the gold complex based on mercaptotriazole was performed by open circuit potential measurement, cycling voltammetry method and by recording the polarization curves. The pH values of the electrolytes were measured before and after each electrochemical experiment. These tests were performed at different starting pH values: 2, 4 and 7 at optimal concentration of gold in the electrolyte of 2.5 g/dm(3). For electrolytes with pH values of four and seven, the first visible signs of the complex decomposition appeared tree months after synthesis. Electrolyte with pH value of two was visually stable for a period of one year.

AB - The subject of this study is the quantitative adhesion of a UV-curing composite film based on Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate) / TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as a matrix and particles doped with ferrous oxide on a metal substrate. Two different metal substrates: silver and gold-spattered brass with nickel intermediate coating were used in adhesion evaluating. Adhesion was measured using micro-identation and it was compared with the measured wetting angle of composites to the substrate. It has been shown that the substrates, although with similar mechanical properties that are reflected in very close hardness values, differ by achieved adhesive bonding with the polymer UV-cured polymer film. The addition of ceramic particles in the polymer matrix increased the adhesion of the composite film to both substrates, but the adhesion trend was dependent on the substrate type.

AB - This work is the first to demonstrate the possibilities of direct analysis of the corrosion film formed on Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy using laser desorption/ionization (LDI) on a commercial matrix-assisted LDI time of flight mass spectrometry (MS) instrument. In the LDI mass spectra measured from the water solution of the corrosion film, the ion species Zn+, Zn(H2O)(+), AgH+, Cu2H+, Cu2O(OH)+, Cu3O(OH)(+) (high intensity), and Cu(OH)(H2O)(+), ZnCl(OH)(H2O)(+), AgCl+, CuCl+ (low intensity) were identified. The LDI mass spectra of the propan-2-ol solution of the corrosion film contains the ions Zn5Cl(OH)(3)(H2O)(11)(+), Zn5Cl2 (OH)(8) (H2O)(6)(+), and Zn5Cl2 (OH)(H2O)(14)(+). Mass spectra were observed at laser energies in the range of 1340-1860 arbitrary units in positive ion mode. Previously, Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the same anodic film have shown similar results as LDI MS -that the anodic film contains the mixture of Ag, Cu2O, CuCl, Zn5Cl2(OH)(8) center dot H2O, and beta-Zn(OH) Cl. LDI MS could be a complementary method for XRD and Raman, as demonstrated in this investigation. The LDI MS method greatly reduces the analysis time and amount of the sample compared to traditional methods. For this reason, the LDI MS method can be a useful tool for the fast qualitative screening of corrosion films.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the stability of the gold complex based on mercaptotriazole at optimum pH value of nine in the electrolyte with gold concentration of 1.5 g/dm3. Investigations were performed by visual monitoring and electrochemical characterization of electrolytes over the period of four months. The first visible signs of the decomposition of the complex were appeared one month after synthesis. Electrochemical characterization of gold complex base on mercaptotriazole performed by the open circuit potential measurement, cycling voltammetry method, and recording the polarization curves, with pH of the electrolyte measurement before and after each electrochemical experiment, showed that all the recorded characteristics remained almost unchanged for a period of four months.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of current density, temperature, pH and concentration of ethyl-hexilsulfonate additive on the microhardness of electrochemically deposited gold decorative coatings obtained from a conventional cyanide electrolyte and gold complex based on mercaptotriazole. Mechanically and chemically prepared brass samples were first nickeled from acidic electrolyte. Nickel was a substrate deposit, and then decorative gold coatings were deposited from two types of electrolytes at different current densities and temperatures. Decorative gold coatings were deposited from auri-mercaptotrizole at different pH values and from electrolyte with and without the ethylhexilsulfonate additive. The microhardness of the gold coating was measured using the Knoop method. The highest values of microhardness were obtained at a current density of 1 A dm(-2) at room temperature for both electrolytes. The microhardness of the gold coatings from cyanide electrolytes was HK = 740 MPa, and the coatings obtained from auri-mercaptotriazole HK = 660 MPa. This difference is not relevant for decorative purposes. The highest values of microhardness, HK = 660 MPa, were obtained at pH = 9 from the gold complex based on mercaptotriazole without the additive.

AB - The objective of this study was characterization of anodic film obtained when Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy was treated electrochemically in 3.5% wt. NaCI under potentiostatic conditions. At the potential of +0.25 V a complex multilayer film is formed. XRD shows that it consists of CuCI and zinc hydroxichlorides with a small amount of Cu2O, probably formed in the film pores. The anodic film is a mixture of Cu2O, CuCI, Zn-5(OH)(8)center dot H2O and beta-Zn(OH)Cl. Phases of the alloy, Ag and Cu rich, show different anodic behavior. It was assumed that all phonon lines in the obtained Raman spectra were of the Lorentzian type, which is one of the common type of lines for this kind of analysis. Phases of Ag, CuCI, fl-Zn(OH)CI, Cu2O and Zn-5(OH)(8)(Cl)(2)center dot H2O were all registered by XRD.

abstract = "The aim of the present work is characterization of electrochemically treated Ag43-Cu37-Zn20 alloy in near neutral chloride solutions by the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. At potential of +0.25 V, a complex multilayer film is formed. XRD shows that it consists of CuCl and zinc hydroxichlorides with small amount of Cu2O, probably formed in the film pores. It can be concluded that the Raman spectroscopy is observed almost all the modes that are registered with the XRD analysis.",

AB - We investigated the effects of natural seawater on the corrosion of an Ag43Cu37Zn20 alloy. The alloy was a commercial brazing filler alloy of composition (BS1845:1984 Ag5) and belongs to the class of Cd-free silver brazing alloys. The Ag-Cu-Zn system is corrosion resistant in chloride solutions has not been widely examined. In this study, the corrosion behavior of the alloy has been investigated using the open circuit potential measurements, Tafel plots and anodic potentiodynamic curves. By comparing different samples of marine water indicates that salinity is the primary influence on corrosion behavior near the open circuit potential. At higher anodic potentials, the impact of mineral composition becomes significant.
