AB - This paper represents a comprehensive review of the effect of elastane and common wet processes (bleaching, dyeing, and softening) on the properties of 100% cotton and half or full plated cotton/elastane single jersey knitted fabrics. The fabrics were characterized in terms of their structural (fabric weight, thickness, and stitch density), comfort (air permeability and water vapor resistance), mechanical (stiffness, bursting elongation, and bursting strength), and antistatic (volume electrical resistivity) properties. Fabrics’ antistatic properties were further improved by in situ synthesis of Cu-based nanoparticles (CuNPs) on their surfaces. Such fabrics can be also considered as bioactive since they possessed excellent antioxidant (determined using the ABTS method) and antimicrobial (against E. Coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans) activities. The last section of this chapter is focused on proposing a novel circular economy solution for the disposal of softened cotton and cotton/elastane knitted fabric waste collected from the textile industry (i.e., after clothing cutting). For that purpose, selected fabrics were revalorized as adsorbents for the widely used textile dye Congo Red and the maximum dye adsorption was tested using isotherm models. Thereafter, the fabrics with adsorbed Congo Red dye were evaluated as antistatic and dissipative fabrics, i.e., as alternative non-metal-based conductive textiles.

AB - In this study, the structural characteristics of plain weft-knitted fabrics both before and after pilling were analyzed, and evaluated their tendency to develop surface fuzz and pilling. Five knitted fabrics made from flax yarn, each with different structural features as the number of wales, courses, mass per unit area, and thickness, were examined. To induce pilling, a Martindale device with two different abrasives: the investigated knitted fabric and a wool woven fabric, was used. The obtained results revealed that the grade of pilling decreased as the number of rubs increased, and that using the investigated knitted fabric as an abrasive resulted in lower grades of pilling. Regardless the pilling was caused by the investigated knitted fabric or the wool woven fabric, a reduction in all examined structural characteristics of the knitted fabrics after pilling, was observed.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the volume electrical resistivity of three plain single jersey weft-knitted fabrics produced from the same flax yarn but with different structural characteristics. The influence of structural characteristics of knitted fabrics (number of courses, mass per unit area, and thickness), atmospheric conditions (relative air humidity and temperature), as well as pilling caused by abrading knitted fabrics with the same knitted fabric, on the volume electrical resistivity of knitted fabrics, were examined in the scope of this investigation. The study showed that the increase in structural characteristics leads to a decrease in the volume resistivity of knitted fabrics. A decrease in air humidity causes an increase in the volume resistivity of investigated knitted fabrics. An increase in temperature causes a decrease in volume resistivity in all examined knitted fabrics. Furthermore, a decrease in the volume resistivity for all knitted fabrics after pilling was registered.

AB - In this paper, comfort parameters of clothing woven fabrics, before and after thermal fixation of interlining, were investigated. Two woven fabrics obtained from cotton and polyester fiber blends made in twill 3/1S weave, as well as cotton fusible woven dot fuse coat interlining, were used as experimental material. Air permeability and dc volume electrical resistivity were investigated as comfort parameters. The obtained results showed that the air permeability is in a function of porosity of the tested samples, their thickness and thermal fixation of interlining, while the dc volume electrical resistivity is in a function of the structural characteristics of woven fabrics, thermal fixation of interlining as well as relative air humidity. It is observed that the thermal fixation of interlining leads to a reduction in air permeability and an increase in the value of dc volume electrical resistivity of the tested woven fabrics.

AB - Comfort properties of knitted fabrics depend on various fabric characteristics such as
chemical composition, knitted structure (fabric thickness and weight), air permeability and water
vapour resistance. The purpose of this investigation is to study the influence of different elastane
content and different processing stages (bleaching and dyeing) on the comfort properties of single
jersey knitted fabrics. Samples made of 100% cotton (20 tex ring spun yarn) and elastane yarn (22
dtex multifilament yarn) in alternating courses (half plating) and elastane yarn in every course (full
plating) were scoured, bleached or dyed. Bleaching was done with 50% H2O2 and dyeing in dark blue
shade with reactive dyes.
In comparison with 100% cotton knitted fabrics, cotton/elastane fabrics have increase fabric
thickness for about 5-16%, fabric weight for about 8-21%, and water vapour resistance for about 11-
30%, but decrease air permeability for about 28-51%. Increased fabric thickness is a result of plating
which means the simultaneous formation of one loop from two threads, so that one thread will lie on
the face of the fabric, while the other thread is fed to the needles in such a way that it forms the back
or reverse of the final fabric. In this case, the largest distance between two points of the cross section
of the knitted fabric will increase because over cotton yarn is elastane yarn. With the increase of the
fabric thickness, fabric weight increases too. 100% cotton knitted fabrics, being smoother and coarser
as compared to cotton/elastane assist easier passage of water vapour and air through it, resulting in
lower water vapour resistance and higher air permeability. The increased water vapour resistance and
reduced fabric air permeability can be attributed to the higher thickness, fabric weight and
compactness accompanied with a higher elastane content, which hard segments offer limited water
vapour and air flow through knitted fabrics.
Insignificant differences in comfort properties (excluded air permeability) were found after
different finishing stages. Bleached knitted fabrics have about 4-10% lower thickness, 4-11% lower
fabric weight, 2-8% lower water vapour resistance, and 8-30% higher air permeability compared to
dyed knitted fabrics. There are many factors that affect comfort properties, such us concentration of
chemical agents, pH, temperature and duration of the treatment. Scouring and bleaching were done in
high alkaline conditions with strong oxidative agent. In such conditions the cotton became stiffer, wax
components were saponified, the fibers in yarns became closer, which resulted in a lower yarn crosssection and reduction of the fabric thickness, fabric weight and water vapour resistance. As the loop is
clearer, the air permeability of bleached knitted fabrics is higher. On the other hand, dyeing in dark
shade was done in milder conditions, which resulted in higher fabric thickness, fabric weight and
water vapour resistance, and lower air permeability in regard to bleached knitted fabrics.

AB - Quality of various clothing woven fabrics with respect to their comfort properties, such as electro-physical properties, air permeability, and compression properties has been studied. Fabrics are produced from cotton and cotton/polyester fibre blends in plain, twill, satin and basket weave. Results show that cotton fabrics have lower values of the volume resistivity, air permeability and compressive resilience but higher values of effective relative dielectric permeability and compressibility as compared to fabrics that have been produced from cotton/PES fibre blends. Regression analysis shows a strong linear correlative relationship between the air permeability and the porosity of the woven fabrics with very high coefficient of linear correlation (0.9807). It is also observed that comfort properties are determined by the structure of woven fabrics (raw material composition, type of weave) as well as by the fabrics surface condition. Findings of the studies have been used for estimating the quality of woven fabrics in terms of their comfort properties by the application of ranking method. It is concluded that the group of cotton fabrics exhibits better quality of comfort as compared to the group of cotton/PES blend fabrics.
