AB  - Basalt as a filler in a polymer-based composite material fulfils the demand of being natural, environment-friendly material for the production of various composite materials. The material could be used as protective layer and the abrasion should be tested in order to evaluate the properties of the material. The cavitation test enables the evaluation of the possible service in conditions that simulate the extensive erosion. The presence of basalt in the matrix improves the resistance to cavitation. The possibility to further improve the material could be obtained using the reinforcement of the matrix itself by incorporation of submicron ceramic particles into the composite. The obtained hybrid composite material with the addition of reinforcement in the matrix further improves the cavitation resistance.

The effect of incompletely condensed polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) on hybrid film adhesion

AB  - The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) structure on the adhesion behaviour of composite films onto a metallic surface. The composite films consisted of UV cured bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as adhesion enhancers. Composites were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt % of POSS. Adhesion was evaluated using the micro Vickers hardness testing method. The contact angle of composite films to a brass substrate was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter obtained from microhardness measurements. Optical microscopy indicated morphological segregation in the hybrid films suggesting the compatibility extent between the matrix and each particle. The shape and size of the indent were analyzed and correlated with adhesion quality. The methods used for the estimation of adhesion strength and quality clearly indicated that the highest adhesion enhancement of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix was POSS reagent containing both polar (hydroxyl) and nonpolar (unsaturated aliphatic - allyl) side groups.

AB  - Composite materials based on UV-curing acrylates and various alumina-based reinforcements represent material that is suitable for the use in dentistry, but also in other areas. Composites were made using four different types of reinforcement of chemically very similar compositions, but different size and morphologies. In order to monitor the mechanical properties of the composite material, samples were made in the form of discs of defined dimensions suitable for polymerization under UV light. The subject of this study is the examination of the mechanical properties of the Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate)/TEGDMA (trimethylene glycol dimethacrylate) photopolymer composite material as a matrix. The reinforcements were in the form of commercial nanoparticles and alumina whiskers and their influence on mechanical properties were compared with the influence of synthesized alumina particles doped with iron oxide synthesized sol-gel technique. In order to test the mechanical properties of composite materials, the Brazilian Tests and the testing of the microhardness of samples were employed.
AB  - Kompozitni materijali na bazi fotopolimerizujućih akrilata i različitih ojačanja na bazi aluminijum-oksida predstavljaju materijal koji je pogodan za upotrebu u stomatologiji, ali i u drugim oblastima. Kompoziti su napravljeni korišćenjem četiri različita tipa ojačanja hemijski veoma sličnih sastava, ali različite veličine i morfologije. Da bi se pratila mehanička svojstva kompozitnog materijala napravljeni su uzorci u formi diskova definisanih dimenzija pogodni za polimerizaciju pod dejstvom UV svetlosti. Predmet ovog istraživanja je ispitivanje mehaničkih svojstava fotopolimerizujućeg kompozitnog materijala na bazi Bis-GMA (Bisfenol A glicidilmetakrilata)/TEGDMA (trietilen glikol dimetakrilata) kao matrice. Ojačanja su bila u formi komercijalnih nanočestica i viskersa aluminijum-oksida i njihov uticaj na mehanička svojstva upoređen je sa uticajem sintetisanih čestica na bazi aluminijum-oksida dopiranih gvožđe oksidom sintetisanih sol gel tehnikom. AB  - Composite films having the UV cured Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate)/TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as a matrix and the ferrous oxide doped alumina (Al2O3 Fe) based particles were prepared and subjected to cavitation. In order to improve the mechanical and adhesion properties of composites, four different surface modifications of filler particles were performed: 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO), vinyltris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane (VTMOEO), (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and biodiesel (BD). Composite films were made with 0.5,1.5, and 3 wt.% of ferrous oxide doped alumina particles with each of the mentioned surface modifications. Composite films were prepared on brass substrates and exposed to cavitation erosion. The erosion was monitored using the mass loss while image analysis was used to observe surface defects. The composite film reinforced with Al2O3 Fe having VTMOEO as a surface modifier was the most resistant one in terms of mass loss, as well as the level of surface destruction. Results were compared to the same polymer matrix film and composite films prepared with fillers without surface modifications revealing that all composites with surface modified fillers exhibited some improvement in resistance to cavitation.

AB  - The subject of this study is the quantitative adhesion of a UV-curing composite film based on Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate) / TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as a matrix and particles doped with ferrous oxide on a metal substrate. Two different metal substrates: silver and gold-spattered brass with nickel intermediate coating were used in adhesion evaluating. Adhesion was measured using micro-identation and it was compared with the measured wetting angle of composites to the substrate. It has been shown that the substrates, although with similar mechanical properties that are reflected in very close hardness values, differ by achieved adhesive bonding with the polymer UV-cured polymer film. The addition of ceramic particles in the polymer matrix increased the adhesion of the composite film to both substrates, but the adhesion trend was dependent on the substrate type.
AB  - Predmet ovog istraživanja je kvantitativna procena adhezije između fotopolimerizujućeg kompozitnog filma na bazi Bis-GMA (Bisfenol A glicidilmetakrilata)/TEGDMA (trietilen glikol dimetakrilata) kao matrice i čestica na bazi aluminijum oksida dopiranih gvožđem na metalnoj podlozi. Korišćene su dve različite metalne podloge, jedna od srebra (u daljem tekstu 'srebro') i jedna pozlaćena mesingana pločica sa međuprevlakom od nikla (u daljem tekstu 'zlato'). Adhezija je merena korišćenjem mikroindentacije i upoređena je sa izmerenim uglom kvašenja kompozita na datim podlogama. Pokazalo se da se podloge, iako sličnih mehaničkih svojstava koje se ogledaju u veoma bliskim vrednostima tvrdoće, razlikuju po ostvarenoj adhezivnoj vezi sa polimernim fotopolimerizujućim filmom. Dodatak keramičkih čestica u polimernu matricu dodatno je povećao adheziju kompozitnog filma na obe podloge, dok je trend adhezije u zavisnosti od tipa podloge održan.

AB  - The objective of this study is to investigate quantitative assessment of the adhesion behavior of composite films onto a metallic surface. The composite films had UV cured Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate)/TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as matrix and ferrous oxide doped alumina (Al2O3 Fe) particles with two surface modifications, (3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (MEMO) and the vinyltris(2-methoxyethoxy) silane (VTMOEO), as reinforcement. Composites were made with 0.5, 1.5 and 3 wt% of alumina particles. Adhesion was evaluated using the micro hardness testing method. The contact angle was measured and compared to the adhesive parameter from micro hardness measurements. The form of the indent on the surface of the composite film was analyzed in order to correlate the indent morphology to the adhesion quality.
